The bully and the question
Decisions“Omma, why do I have two grandfathers?”
Hana looked at her son who had his head tilted as he waited for her response. She smiled at him, before telling the same words that her parents used to tell her.
“Because you’re special.”
Hana was in her first grade in elementary school when she first started understanding what the repercussions of her parents’ actions had in store for her.
“Who’s that guy?”
Hana turned to the boy sitting next to her in class before asking back, “Who?”
“The one who took you to school,” he replied as he put his head on his palm.
“That’s my father,” Hana answered him proudly with a big bright smile.
But then, he did not return her beam but stared at the girl with a creased forehead.
“Then who’s the one who’s fetching you every day?” he asked.
“That’s my father too,” Hana answered again with the same smile.
“You have two fathers?” he retorted.
“Yes,” Hana replied nonchalantly with a nod.
“Is your mother a flirt?” he asked with a disgusted expression.
“What’s a ‘flirt’?” she asked back with her head tilted in curiosity.
“A flirt- a woman who sleeps with a different man every day.”
“That doesn’t sound good,” her face scrunched. “I assure you that my mom only sleeps with Sehun appa because Jongin appa sleeps with me.”
“Then why do you have two fathers? Your mom should have slept with both of them.”
Hana opened but found no words to defend Suzy at that time, so instead she said, “I don’t like you. Your words do not sound nice. They do these little pricks in my heart.”
He practically rolled his eyes at her after sticking out his tongue. She didn’t talk to him anymore for the rest of the day but Hana couldn’t deny how his words made her anxious.
Suzy was sewing a patch of Sehun’s pajama as she sat on the sofa while Hana had her notebooks and books scattered on the coffee table. She was trying to do her home works but the words of her seat mate kept playing in her head. She snatched glances from her mother every now and then, and Suzy would catch her every time she would do so.
“What is it, Hana?” Suzy asked as she put down her work and looked at her daughter.
There was a clear hesitation in the girl’s eyes as she bit her lower lip but Suzy’s long stare was urging her to say the words she was keeping to herself.
“Omma, why do I have two fathers?”
There was a glimpse of shock in Suzy’s eyes. It has already been more than a year since she remarried Sehun and introduced Jongin as a father to Hana but the girl never asked a question about it. She learned to accept both men in her life as both of them showered her with love. However, Suzy knew that there would come a time where external pressure would force Hana to question her situation.
“Because you’re special,” she answered her with a smile.
“I already know that,” Hana mumbled as her gaze fell to her notebook and her lips formed a pout.
The small smile remained in Suzy’s lips as she realized that Hana was indeed growing old and curiosity about the world and the society would bother the girl’s mind more. She sat beside the girl and released a sigh.
“It would be so hard to make you understand everything at such a young age, Hana,” Suzy sincerely said. “It would be a question of morality and situational conflicts.”
“What’s ‘morality’?” Hana asked with wide eyes.
“It’s like a set of rules and guidelines that society has,” Suzy replied as she faced the girl. “Almost all of the time, morality would make sure things are going well in the world since it’s the one that dictates what’s right.”
“But sometimes, people tend to forget that there are exceptions to the rule,” she added after a short while. “They wrongfully judge based on the outcome alone and not on its background.”
“How could there be exceptions? Isn’t that unfair?” Hana asked.
“Hmmm,” Suzy hummed before answering, “Because there are also times where people didn’t choose to be bad. Situations have cornered them to make some choices that are against morality even if what they’re actually thinking is for the best of the ones they love.”
Hana nodded and listened intently to the next words that slipped out of Suzy’s lips.
“Your fathers and I, we were in that kind of situation before.”
“So you belong to the exceptions?” Hana asked as she titled her head once more.
“Kind of,” Suzy answered with a chuckle. “We were trapped in limited choices where we could do no
