Chapter 24

My Brother's Girlfriend

"Finally, what took you so damned long?" KangIn laugh boomed as he stood by the door of the drivers side. I didn't dare look into his eyes as I threw him the keys. The car locks clicked open and I slipped quietly into the backseat, DongHae sliding in through the right door, leaving the passenger seat for TaeYeon. It took a couple tries before the engine roared back to life and we rolled down the parking lot. As he began driving down the road to TaeYeon's apartment, KangIn fiddled around the radio station for a couple seconds before landing on his favourite song from Girls' Generation: Run Devil Run. I chuckled darkly at how ironic the lyrics were:

'You're really a bad boy, only having curiosity rather than love.

Because of you, I've been fooled the entire time.

You're no fun, you have no manners. You're a devil, devil you are.

So many men that are in your phone are girls with only one letter changed.

The perfume smell that's sickening to my nose, tell me whose it is.

Even when you're by my side, you always look at other girls.

When I'm not there, you're a super playboy.'

I couldn't help but think of KangIn. It wasn't right that I was thinking of my brother in this way, but how could he do that to TaeYeon? Have an affair when he's off on a work thing? Was it even for work or did he just go to have with another girl? DongHae tapped my elbow which caught my attention. I saw him nudge his chin towards KangIn, indicating for me to tell him what happened. I whispered quietly, "Later. When she's with us." He nodded in understanding, "I need to tell you something..." This caught his ear. I turned my attention to KangIn but he was too busy singing along with whoever was singing. "Oh, my favourite part!" He turned the volume up and sang along loudly. We both groaned quietly at how ridiculous he looked. I focused back to DongHae.

"Before I locked the dorm, I heard a girl on the answering machine."
"I swear to God, I didn't tell her the right phone number, oh my G-" DongHae's eyes bugged out as he leaned back. I grabbed his arm and pulled him closer while shushing him.

"No, not for you." He sighed in relief, "It was a girl looking for KangIn." I noticed a sense of interest flicker in his dark eyes. "She's said - and I quote - 'I had a great time couple nights ago. Let's do it again and I'll book a hotel room'." His breath caught and the look of fury blazed in his eyes.

"KangIn!" DongHae blurted loudly. I covered his mouth with one hand as KangIn looked back when we reached a red light. "Mmff-"

"What are you doing, LeeTeuk?" He rose an eyebrow at my action. I spoke through gritted teeth,

"Nothing, sorry. Continue driving." I saw him slightly shrug before turning back around and making a right. TaeYeon's apartment was in view and I removed my hand from DongHae's face. "We'll ask him about it later. We can't let TaeYeon be suspicious about this." I hissed while he leaned back in his chair and groaned again. We pulled up to her front door and waited a few minutes in silence.

"LeeTeuk," KangIn finally began to speak, "Can you go and ring her apartment bell?" I sat in confusion for a few moments before making out a simple 'yes' and got out of the car. I took a couple strides to her front entrance before looking behind my shoulder and seeing KangIn talking to DongHae. He better not slip out the message from the answering machine when I'm gone. I quickly ran towards her apartment and clicked the button that was connected to TaeYeon's room.

"Sorry, I'm coming, wait!" Her voice tripped upon each other as she hung up. I turned back to the car and saw DongHae nodding as KangIn smiled widely. He definitely didn't say anything about the girl, but why was KangIn smiling? The door behind me whipped open which caused my head to look in the same direction. At the same time, my jaw fell open. TaeYeon was in a beautiful silver dress. The front of her dress cut at her knees while the back flowed behind her. Her honey brown hair was curled softly on both sides of her shoulders, but the top half was tied up. She had black strap on heels that shimmered slightly, yet it did her no justice as usual. The wind from opening the door blew a breeze towards me, engulfing me in her light perfume that I loved so much. My mind raced as I blinked twice before speaking.

"You're joking me." I managed as she pulled on the jacket in her hand.

"Not good?" She bit her bottom lip as she threw her hair to her side after sliding the coat on.

"No," I smiled and held out my arm. She wrapped hers around mine, "The opposite. It's perfect. I feel underdressed." TaeYeon giggled and shook her head. We walked out of her apartment and walked towards the stalled car. I heard a car door open and my eyes made it's way towards KangIn who was walking towards us. I couldn't help but hold on tighter to her arm, not wanting him to even touch her perfection. But I remembered that he still had no idea about TaeYeon and I, so I relentlessly dropped her arm and gave her hand to KangIn. He managed a quick 'thanks'. I simply nodded and walked past the two. DongHae patted my back in support as I got back in the car and shoved my seatbelt on. "What bull is he trying to pull?" I mumbled under my breath.

"It's not like that, LeeTeuk. He didn't want to tell you because he knew how close you are to TaeYeon, and he knew you'd slip the word. But, KangIn is actually goi-" I didn't end up hearing what he was going to say because TaeYeon was already at the passenger side, with KangIn holding the door open for her. I was automatically sent into a grumpy mood as I loosened my tie ever so slightly, forgetting about what DongHae was about to tell me. He couldn't even tell me he was going to have an affair with another woman because he couldn't trust me? Of course I would tell her if he was cheating, but this was a new low. I couldn't help but think of more dark thoughts as we begun our way towards the restaurant.

"Where are we going?" TaeYeon spoke as the man beside her took her hand and held it.
"The restaurant where we first went," He glanced over to look her in the eye, before turning back his focus to the road, "I was going to bring you there on our one year but I totally forgot. Never too late!" She laughed in response which caused me to watch her with hurtful eyes. I couldn't believe her. Had she completely forgotten about me ever since KangIn got back? How could she? After everything I said, everything she said! What was the point in all of that? Was she just lonely? Did I get played?
I was embarrassed. I couldn't believe I fell for whatever she was going for. I scoffed a little too loudly which caused her to turn her head towards me. TaeYeon found my eyes right as I looked out the window. From the corner of my eye, I noticed that she didn't look away until a couple seconds later. I don't even know what she wants from me anymore. I thought we could've been something. I guess it was silly for me to even think of something like that.

I just need to get through with this dinner then I could just go home and let the couple be.

--

"Thanks for dinner, bro!" DongHae grinned as he threw his napkin on his plate. "But, unfortunately, I have to get going."

"Already?" He stared at his watch as I kept my eyes on my food. "It's only 8!"

"Yeah," DongHae stood up, "I made plans though and I just remembered when we were leaving the dorm. I'll call a cab though so don't worry."
"Wait," He stood up too. This made me turn my head, "I need to talk to you for a second. Come with me?" He extended his arm towards DongHae. I saw my younger brother glance at his watch to contemplate if he had time. To my surprise, DongHae walked towards KangIn and they both made their way to the side of the restaurant and they began to have a very intense conversation. I didn't bother to try to interpret what they were saying and continued back to my plate, without making any indication of wanting to talk to TaeYeon.

"LeeTeuk," TaeYeon hissed at me from across the table, "Are we going to tell him tonight?"
"What?" I looked up and saw that she had put her fork down. "We're still going to tell him?"
"Of course! When DongHae leaves, I think we should tell him what happened." I leaned back, fork and knife still in my hand in amazement. What was she even talking about?

"I thought you fell in love with KangIn again," My voice was bitter and filled with poison, "Seems like it, anyway." Her eyes flickered as she leaned closer to me and spoke in a hushed tone.

"No, I thought I told you my feelings already," This time, her voice was shaking. I could tell she was beginning to regret speaking up. "Unless you don't feel the same anymore."

I wish I was stronger. Strong enough to ignore her. Strong enough to resist her. I wasn't though. Not even close. She was everything I imagined my ideal girl to be. How could I ignore this opportunity in being with someone I cared about. It's been forever since I've been with someone. Was I mistaking this admiration for just loneliness?
"No, I do like you. It's just," I thought of the words to say, "It looked like you didn't." She sighed and reached out to hold my hand.

"Don't be silly, of course I do. I just tried to make it seem like nothing was wrong for his sake. He's strong though, I know he can take it." I dropped my fork and held her hand tightly.

"Okay wait, I'm going to see what they're talking about." She let go of my hand as I stood up and carelessly bumped into a couple tables as I found my way towards the two. "What are you guys even talking about?" I asked.

"Uh," DongHae then stopped talking in mid-sentence and stared at me. "LeeTeuk, what are you doing here?" There was a sense of caution in his voice. I couldn't make it out though.

"What do you mean? We're waiting for KangIn to come back. What's going on?" I tried meeting eyes with KangIn but he only had his attention to DongHae. I followed his stare to DongHae who looked really nervous. "DongHae?"

"You might as well tell him." He spoke out loud, "He's going to find out in a couple minutes anyway."

"Find out what?"

"KangIn, he's not going to ruin it." DongHae held his breath, as if he was holding a secret that wouldn't have been in my favor. I noticed that KangIn wasn't as happy as he was before. "Just be honest."

"I'm..." KangIn sighed and stared at me straight in my eye, "I was going to propose to TaeYeon tonight."

The words suddenly felt like a weight upon my shoulder. Propose? How am I going to tell him about what happened now? What will TaeYeon say? Or will we mention it before he pops the question? He definitely will not want to have anything to do with me anymore. "You want to marry her?" I choked on my words.

"Yes," He held unto my shoulder and smiled. "That's why I asked you earlier today. And I was thinking about it until now. I think I'm ready. She's the one." Suddenly he dropped his hand and stood up straighter. I ignored his sudden shift. Everything was causing my head to spin. I could barely manage a breath out of my chest as his eyes filled with concern, "LeeTeuk, what's wrong?" I saw DongHae grip my shoulder to help me from falling incase I were to faint. He knew what I felt for TaeYeon, but he didn't let it slip to KangIn.

"You can't marry her," slipped out of my mouth before I could think. I saw his eyes widen as his lips pulled into a straight line, "Not after what happened." DongHae dug his hand into my shoulder to tell me to stop talking. I pushed his arm away. Then out of nowhere, I exploded. "After you left the apartment, someone called. Someone called YoonJi." The name sparked something in him and I noticed. A snide comment slithered off my tongue, "Recognize the name?"

"LeeTeuk, stop now. It's not what you think." I could see that he was very much more cautious than before. But I continued to interrogate him.

"It's exactly what I think. You had an affair when you left. 'I'll book a hotel room'? What the hell is that, KangIn? I thought you were better than that, and to do it to someone like TaeYeon! You couldn't have waited to break up with her before you had with a random stranger you meet in a work conference?" I looked at DongHae to back me up but all I could see was him mouth 'stop talking'. I looked at him in bewilderment. To think he had my back. Then abruptly, I hear a small gasp behind me. And I knew I had just done something wrong. I slowly spin around and of course, there she is.

"Is that true, KangIn?" The tears were welling up in her eyes. KangIn roughly shoved me to the side as he walked towards TaeYeon. His hands reached out towards her but she backed up as he came closer to her. "Don't." I noticed his body was shaking slightly, like he did every time he was angry. To my side, DongHae's hands were at the sides of his head, with arms held above. He looked like he knew something I didn't know.

"TaeYeon, hear me out first." I knew TaeYeon was too stubborn and prideful to stay around. She instinctively dropped the napkin she was holding in her hand and began to walk back to the table, with KangIn following close behind her. She grabbed her coat and clutch then made her way out the restaurant.

"Why is she being like this?" I spoke quietly to myself, "She knew they were going to break up anyway. It's easier this way too..."
"Are you really that insensitive, LeeTeuk?" DongHae voice was filled with ridicule. "You couldn't have waited until after to say something about YoonJi. You couldn't have even let him explain. And you made a huge mistake - even before you opened your goddamned mouth." Where was this coming from?
"I didn't know she was behind me! What are you talking about 'letting him explain'? What's there to explain when he cheats?" There were stares all around the restaurant but I didn't pay attention to them.

"That girl wasn't someone he was hooking up with," He glared right into my eyes, "YoonJi was helping KangIn plan his proposal. When she said she had lots of fun it was because they were thinking of ways he could pop the question." Everything was falling to place, "And by hotel room, she meant for their honeymoon. She's in charge of a 5 star hotel in Hawaii." I couldn't believe what he was saying. It was all too coincidental.

"Youre joking. How can you believe everything he says?" I notice a sense of betrayal withering within my body. Who have I become? To not even trust someone I've known for all my life.

"How can I believe everything he says?" DongHae brushes past me, knocking my shoulder on the way.

"He's my brother, which I wish I could say the same about you now, LeeTeuk."
