"My poor Ra Im-ssi, where are you going to stay now?" Manager Seong asked, as I slipped on the dreadful frilly pink apron and matching bonnet. "I mean I would let you stay over at my place, but there is just absolutely no room."

"Oh" I mumbled with disappointment. and headed out to the front counter to serve the customers. Manager Seong scurried after me, desperate to make me feel better or, maybe, to not feel guilty about it.

"How about I give you a raise?" I perked up at that. When she called out "9,250 won", I slumped back down again. Wow, how generous of her to add a gracious 250 won (equivalent to 0.21 USD) to my low hourly rate. Big deal.

"Seong Manager, perhaps you know a cheap and small apartment I can rent out." I said to her, testing my last strand of hope.
