Chapter 28: A Wolf in Sheep’s clothing.
Kingmaker: A Hidden Promise
“Seulgi–ah, do you have any idea what you’re saying right now?”
Seulgi did. She knew every single word that was said would be considered treason and that she could be executed on the spot. But she was also familiar with what kind of person Prince Seungri was.
“Miss Sunyoung, start from the beginning.” Seulgi moved to the side table where Yuju had placed the drinks and snacks. She poured out a cup of tea and brought it over to Joohyun. “What does the crown prince have to do with these crimes?”
Sunyoung made her way over to a seat and let out a shaky sigh.
The Song family in Dongqian and corrupt officials in the Crimson Lion Army were part of Crown Prince Seungri’s faction. The Song family’s wealth basically acts as Prince Seungri’s treasure vault. They kidnap innocent civilians through Okeydokey Brothel and trick them into slave contracts. Once those people become a slave, they’re sent to Fu’nan.
In Fu’nan, abled slaves are registered into the Crimson Lion army while those inept with the sword are sent as servants and maids to the higher corrupted officials.
“It doesn’t stop there.” Sowon made her appearance known from a quiet corner.
“Couldn’t be bothered with formalities?” Joohyun shook her head.
Seulgi interfered. “What do you mean?”
“There’s another army that resides in the south.”
“Ano–” Seulgi narrowed her brows.
“Preposterous!” Joohyun slammed her hands on the table. “There are only four official armies in the Li Kingdom. All are stationed at our borders in each cardinal points of the capital city. It is treason to amass an army without the court’s consent!”
“That doesn’t seem to stop the crown prince.” Sowon spoke the title with disgust.
“Miss Joohyun please calm down.” Sunyoung mediated. “Sowon, go make sure Yuju doesn’t destroy the kitchen.”
“Miss Sunyoung, surely Miss Sowon didn’t speak in the spur of the moment.” Seulgi brought over a snack to keep Joohyun calm.
Sunyoung kneeled before them and lowered her head. “Please understand her position. Sowon… lost her partner during an undercover investigation.”
A tiny gasp escaped from Joohyun’s lips. She had experienced the loss of many comrades during the five–year war. A feeling of anguish she was no stranger to.
“When we received word of slaves being smuggled into the army, Sowon and her partner, Eunha, led a few of our spies undercover.” Sunyoung was supported by Seulgi as she stood up. “That decision… she deemed it as the bane of her existence.”
