87 Steps to Kim Jongdae

Jongdae silently heaved out a sigh as he nervously straightened out his neatly ironed tuxedo while impatiently tapping his shoes at the cold marble floor.

She’s late.

For the third time today, he arranged his hair even though it was perfectly arranged. His heart just couldn’t be at ease. Especially at this day.

Jongdae started puffing up his cheeks just to deal with the nervousness and anxiety he’s been feeling inside. Small beads of sweat were starting to form in his forehead as time goes by. He just couldn’t seem to calm down and relax. It was impossible to do those at this point of time.

What if she decides not to come today?

What if Eunsol realizes that she doesn’t want to marry me?

Jongdae looked around. Tons of people came today. His friends. Tao, Luhan, Yifan and Yixing who’s seating beside her girlfriend, who happens to be Eunsol’s best friend, Jieun. His family and her family as well. They all came today. And it would be a total disaster if Eunsol wouldn’t come. And he wouldn’t know how to deal with it either. He wouldn’t be able to take it.

She’ll come. She’ll definitely come. She promised me that she will. Jongdae recited again and again to clear out the negative thoughts that’s been forming inside his head.

She must be on her way here. Right. That’s it. That should be it.

Minseok suddenly walked towards him with a serious look on his face. “Jongdae, I have to tell you something.” He whispered as he stood beside him. He was the best man after all.

“What is it?” he asked as he turned to his friend worriedly. The expression in his face, his voice, he had this feeling that whatever that will come out from Minseok’s mouth is not something he would like to hear.

“Calm down okay? Don’t panic.” Minseok told him as he placed his hand over Jongdae’s shoulder as if he’s trying to prepare him for something which he wouldn’t be able t take.

“Dammit! You’re making me even more nervous! Just tell me what it is!” Jongdae exclaimed with his high-pitched voice.

Minseok sighed problematically, not knowing on where to start. “Eunsol… she… she’s not coming today. I’m sorry.”

Jongdae turned to him with a look. “Not funny bun. Don’t try to ruin my wedding.” He mumbled, trying to look as if he was not affected with what he just said, but in fact he is. His world was slowly crumbling inside when he heard it. But there’s a chance that he’s just pranking him so he should act as if nothing wrong and that he’s perfectly fine with it when what he’s feeling is the complete opposite of it.

Minseok shrugged. “Well isn’t she over half an hour late? She already ran away.”

Jongdae’s face fell. It was true though. She was already half an hour late. Did she really ran away? He thought as his face contorted in a worried frown and few moments later he was already on the brink of crying. The more he thought of it, the more it seemed true. If she really wanted to marry him, she wouldn’t be late on such a special day right?

Besides, Eunsol was never late.

Never.

So… is it true? Jongdae asked himself as he turned to look at his best friend. He looked as if he was going to cry any moment sooner. “Did she really…” Jongdae started as his eyes started to water.

“Did Eunsol really ran away? She’s not going to marry me anymore?” he asked as tears started b out of his eyes, and without him noticing it, he was already crying, not caring if he looked ugly or whatever.

And suddenly, Minseok bursts out laughing as he hit Jongdae’s shoulder a few times with a bright smile. “Relax. I was just kidding.”

“KIM MINSEOK!” Jongdae exclaimed angrily, getting the attention of everyone inside the church. Minseok’s joke was not funny at all. But he was a tiny bit thankful that it was just a joke.

That means, Eunsol will still be marrying him.

Minseok on the otherhand couldn’t help but to just laugh at his friend. He looked so helpless just a few seconds ago. And it was really really really funny to him.

Jongdae glared at him with gritted teeth. “I hate you for that.” He mumbled as he looked away.

“I was just trying to calm you down since you seemed so nervous.” Minseok explained as he smiled.

“Calm me down? I think you’re trying to kill me with hypertension!” Jongdae exclaimed at him. His high-pitched voice filled the four corners of the church.

“But, are you really sure that you’re not going to ask someone else to replace me?” Minseok asked him, he suddenly turned serious.

“What? Replace? What are you talking about?” Jongdae asked him worriedly. “You’re my best friend. So you should be the best man.”

“Like I’ve said before, Eunsol might just take me instead of you—“

“Can someone please take this ing bun away?! I need him to be 250 kilometers away from this church now! Luhan! Go and throw this bun out!” Jongdae exclaimed as he glared at Minseok. Luhan just grinned at them. He was busy taking pictures of the guests and everything else.

“But seriously, congratulations on your wedding.” This time, Minseok seemed serious and sincere, for the very first time. “Take care of her and I hope that you guys would build a happy family. I wish you all the best.” Minseok smiled as he tapped Jongdae’s shoulder comfortingly.

Jongdae happily smiled back as he nodded. “Thank you.”

The choir suddenly started singing as the main door slowly opened. And from afar, Jongdae could see her.

Eunsol was there. She was standing at the other side of the church, wearing the prettiest gown which was suited for someone as beautiful as her.

And even though he was far from her, Jongdae could tell that she was smiling. A bouquet of her favorite flowers was in her hands. When she took a step forward, that’s when he realized that this is it.

He’s really getting married with Park Eunsol today.

And just the mere thought of it makes him so emotional and he couldn’t help but cry. He promised himself that he wouldn’t cry on their wedding day. But he couldn’t help it.

After all the fights, be it big or small or sometimes the pointless fights. After all the cheesy moments he spent with her. After all those memorable anniversaries. After all the things that happened to him, to them, it has all come down to this.

They’re getting married.

Today.

He’s finally marrying her.

Finally.

“Stop crying will you? She’s not even halfway here.” Minseok told him as he handed him a tissuebox. “So gay.” He mumbled as he shook his head. He was embarrassed to even call Jongdae as his friend.

“You’ll understand me the moment you get married you fool.” Jongdae mumbled as he messily wiped his tears away. He still needs to look good today. Or else Eunsol might really take Minseok instead of him.

When Eunsol was just right infront of him, Jongdae couldn’t help but to just cry again.

His friends, even Eunsol was laughing at him but he couldn’t help it. The tears were flowing as if it was an open faucet. He couldn’t even stop them. He wanted to, but he couldn’t.

“Why are you crying?” Eunsol asked him with a gentle smile.

Looking at her face like this, makes Jongdae realize that she never changed one bit. She still looks the same as she did when they first met. When asked him to go out with her. Well maybe one things changed. She looked a lot prettier than ever.

“Because it’s our wedding day.” Jongdae answered her as he messily wiped away the tears.

Eunsol gently wiped his tears away with her hand. “Stupid. Shouldn’t you be happy?”

“These tears… are not normal tears. These are tears of…. joy.”

She smiled as she lightly shook her head. Kim Jongdae will always be Kim Jongdae even at their wedding. He’s as childish as ever.

The ceremony smoothly took place and now they’re already on the last part. The exchange of vows.

“Do you, Mr. Kim Jongdae take—“

“I do. I really really do.” Jongdae answered tentatively.

The priest smiled at him. “Please let me finish first before you answer.” The crowd laughed at his childish behavior including Eunsol.

But Jongdae was serious about it. He just really wanted to end the ceremony as fast as he could so that he’d officially be able to call her his wife, Mrs. Kim Eunsol.

The priest asked him once again. “Do you, Mr. Kim Jongdae take Ms. Park Eunsol to be a part of your life?”

Jongdae turned to her with a smile.

Today, he’s marrying her. The girl who changed his life.  And now, the girl who will be a part of his life. And he couldn’t be any happier than this day.

After this, he’s going to start a new chapter of his life with her. Like he has always wanted to. Like he has always prayed for.

A life with Eunsol. Waking up with her by his side every single day. Raising up their own kids. Building a family with her.

How great would that be?

“I repeat, Mr. Kim Jongdae—”

“Mr. Kim Jongdae…”

“Mr. Kim Jongdae!” their English professor exclaimed as he threw a piece of chalk at him which fell exactly on his head. It immediately caused him to be wide awake.

Jongdae immediately stood up and shouted a loud and clear. “I do.” Which made his classmates laugh.

He looked around.

The grandiose church.

The singing choir.

The priest.

Minseok standing behind him.

Eunsol in a wedding dress.

Everything was gone.

It was just a dream.

Everything was just a good dream.

“Since you’re sleeping in my class, 3 hours of detention for you Mr. Kim.” The teacher exclaimed at him angrily. Jongdae silently nodded as he sat down still couldn’t believe that everything was just a dream. It seemed so surreal.

“I do huh?” Eunsol snickered beside him. “Were you dreaming of marrying me?” she asked him.

“I am!” Jongdae nodded. “It seemed so real! You were wearing a beautiful gown and I was crying. And Minseok was there. Everyone was there. It really seemed so real.” Jongdae started narrating out his dream.

Suddenly, the bell rang, indicating that their classes already ended. And one by one the students including the professor left the room.

“I really seemed so real.” Jongdae mumbled for the nth time. He still couldn’t accept the fact that it was only a dream.

“Really?” Eunsol asked him with a big smile, amused of his cute reaction while she started packing her things inside her bag.

“Yes. You were wearing a beautiful gown. And you were smiling at me. And the choir. The church. Everything was perfect. I thought it was real. I thought I was really getting married to you.”

Eunsol’s smile grew bigger. “Well you have to finish your detention first before we proceed to our wedding. I’ll be waiting for you at the library okay?” She told him as she gave him a quick peck on the lips before running off, leaving Jongdae there, still thinking about his dream.

“Have you seen Jongdae?” Minseok asked Jieun as he saw her pass by down the hallway.

Three months has passed since their fight. And things are all okay now. He’s not completely moved on yet since it wouldn’t happen with just a blink of an eye but he’s trying to. It’s not like he’d be moping forever about it anyways.

“He got detention earlier for sleeping in class.” Jieun told him with a smile.

Minseok smiled as he shook his head. He could totally imagine Jongdae being scolded by their teacher. “Oh. That troll.”

“YAAAAAAAAAAH!”

They both looked at where the sound was coming from. And Jieun had this idea that she knew who it was.

And she was right.

It was none other than him.

Yixing.

Who else right?

Yixing walked right in between of them and shielded Jieun from Minseok as he glared at him. “Why’re you talking to her?” he asks Minseok with a frown.

Minseok smiled in interest as he stared at the two. Looks like Yixing really likes her.

“What do you think you’re doing?! We’re just talking what’s wrong with that?” Jieun hissed at Yixing as she slightly hit his arm.

“But I told you to stay away from him didn’t I?” Yixing mumbled as he eyed her, trying his best to stay calm. Well, he could never get mad at Lee Jieun anyways.

“Why would I?”

Yixing sighed. She would never understand even if he told her why so he didn’t bother telling her the reason. Besides, there’s this high chance of her not believing him. “Just do as I say!” Yixing mumbled as he scratched the back of his neck in irritation.

Jieun crossed her arms over her chest as she walked away. “I won’t.”

“Where are you going?” Yixing asked her as he followed her. “Why won’t you do as I say? We even made a promise with our pinkies before remember?” Yixing asked as he grabbed her hand and tried to demonstrate their ‘pinky promise’ “It was like this—”

“Goodbye Minseok! See you!” Jieun suddenly exclaimed as she waved goodbye to Minseok who did the same to her and to Yixing as well.

“WHY DID YOU SAY GOODBYE TO HIM?”

“WHAT’S WITH ‘GOODBYE MINSEOK SEE YOU’?”

“ARE YOU GUYS DATING OR SOMETHING?!”

“WHY WON’T YOU ANSWER ME?”

“HUH?”

“ANSWER ME LEE JIEUN!”

“YAH. I’M TALKING TO YOU!”

“LEE JIEUN!”

“Just where in the world is Kris?!” Luhan shouted angrily as he turned to Tao. He’s been looking for that beanpole for almost half an hour now. But still, he couldn’t find him.

Tao eyed him innocently. He has just woken up from his deep slumber. “I don’t know. Why? What happened hyung?”

“I can’t find him anywhere!” Luhan answered his dongsaeng with a big frown.

“Why are you looking for him?” Tao asked him as he rubbed his eyes, still not getting why Luhan’s so furious over Kris’s absence.

“The three of us should always stick together!” Luhan told him. “We should stick beside each other as if were glued to one another.”

Tao frowned in confusion. “And why is that?”

Luhan sighed as he finally calmed down. “Jongdae already have Eunsol. And Yixing likes Jieun. Minseok… he’s still moving on. So that means we’re the only ones left! They’re all busy with their lovelifes! Shouldn’t friendship be our priority?” Luhan asked him. “That’s why the three of us should be friends forever. Don’t date yet okay? It’s dangerous. Just look at Minseok.”

“Hyung…”

“It’s a cycle you know. The first stage is a Yixing Stage.  Meaning he’s still crushing on her. No relationship or whatsoever and he’s struggling about thinking of super cool ways to confess. Isn’t that pathetic?”

Tao shook his head. “I don’t think so.”

Luhan gave him a look. “Whatever.  Moving on, the second stage is the Jongdae Stage. That means, they’re already together. They’re happily in a relationship and ignores everyone else in the world. They don’t care about others. Selfish right?”

“Hyung actually….”

“And the last and scariest stage is the Minseok Stage. It’s the heartbroken stage. Isn’t that just sad? I don’t want us to experience those. So let’s not date girls yet okay?”

“Hyung I think I forgot to tell you that I’m seeing someone.”

Luhan’s eyes widened as he gaped at Tao. “You ...are?”

“And Kris hyung’s dating too. We … thought you knew.”

“So I’m the only one left? You bunch of traitors! And I thought we were friends!” He exclaimed furiously feeling betrayed by his precious friends.

Maybe he should start dating too.

Maybe.

“How was your detention huh dreamy boy?” Eunsol snickered at him as she plopped on the empty bus seat. Jongdae’s detention already ended and now, they’re already on their way home.

Jongdae made a face at her for making his remember how his bloody detention went. “It was the worst.” He answered back as he sat beside her.

“Mr. Kang was terrible. He  asked me to clean the hallway in the third floor. The ing third floor where all sorts of spiders insects and bugs reside.” Jongdae started telling her what actually happened during his detention even though he doesn’t want to.

Eunsol smiled at him, watching silently as his face contorts into different expression while he spoke. “And then he asked me to sort out all of his papers dammit. That’s why I’m so tired.” Jongdae mumbled as he leaned on her shoulder. “Good thing were going to graduate soon. I won’t be able to see him anymore.” He mumbled as he finally smiled.

Speaking of graduation and the future, now that he mentioned it, Eunsol couldn’t help but wonder about him and what he wanted to do. “When you grow up, what do you want to be?” she suddenly aked out of the blue

“What grow up? We’re already tall.” Jongdae said as he looked up at her. “Sorry. I mean, I’m already tall.” he corrected with a smug smirk.

Eunsol snorted at him. “Well, sorry that I’m so short.”

“It’s actually a lot better that you’re short.”

“Why?” Eunsol asked as she looked at him. She never considered being short as a good thing. So what’s this guy talking about saying that her, being short is better?

Jongdae straightened up and looked at her. “Well, come to think of it, if you’re taller than me, wouldn’t it be awkward if we kiss? I’d have to stand on my toes or you’d have to bend down a bit. That’s just… I wouldn’t like that.” He said as he shook his head in disapproval.

Eunsol nodded as she smiled at his extreme cuteness. “So, what do you want to do after college?” she asked, totally changing the topic. She just wanted to know if he sees her as a part of his future. It may be a bit selfish for her to think of it, but …she just wants to know.

“What about you?” he asked, bringing back the question to her.

Eunsol sighed as she thought about it. When she finally made up her mind she turned to him with a smile. “I want to be involved in making films, movies, things like that.”

Jongdae nodded. “Hmmm.. so you want to be a director someday?”

“Maybe.” Eunsol smiled. “What about you?”

“Me?” Jongdae asked as he turned to her. “I want to be your husband.”

Eunsol blushed as she lightly hit him. “I’m asking about what kind of work!” she exclaimed trying to hide the fact that she was so happy that he wants to be her husband in the future.

“I haven’t thought about it yet. But I’d love to sing.” Jongdae mumbled in a serious tone.

She smiled as she looked at him. “Sing? So you’ll be a hallyu star?”

“Maybe.”

Eunsol suddenly laughed.

Jongdae turned to her with narrowed eyes. “What are you laughing at? Huh?”

“You  can’t even dance. How will you be a hallyu star?” She told him while trying to stop herself from laughing.

“There are trainings you know! After 3 to four years, I’ll be good at dancing too! And you’ll see me on music shows, on billboards, concert halls, everywhere you look, you’ll see me.” Jongdae proudly told her. “I’ll be famous.”

“Really?”

“Really! And I’ll be greeting you on TV so you better watch every show I go on.”

Eunsol immediately opened her bag and took out her notebook and pen and handed it to him. “I should get your autograph then. I don’t want to be forgotten by the great hallyu star Kim Jongdae-ssi.”

Jongdae took her notebook and pen and acted as if he was really some kind of a big star. “What’s your name?” Jongdae asked her, copying those Kpop stars whenever a fan asks for their autograph.

Eunsol couldn’t help but smile at his silly behavior. “Oppa, it’s Park Eunsol.” She said acting as if she’s a diehard fan.

Jongdae wrote her name, drew a heart beside it then signed at the bottom of the paper. Then, he handed it to her. “Here, to my first ever fan.”

Eunsol took it with a small chuckle as she stared at his signature. “If you’re really going to be a hallyu star, maybe I should start collecting your things and sell them online when you’re already famous so that I could have money.” She told him with a smirk.

Jongdae shook his head disapprovingly. “No need. I’m going to make a lot of money for us.” He said as he wrapped his long pair of arms around her. “And then, we’ll get married and have awesome babies in the future.” He mumbled as he placed his head on her shoulders and slowly closed his eyes. “But for now, let’s sleep first. Maybe my dream will continue if we sleep now.”

Eunsol just smiled as she lightly ruffled his silky hair. “Goodnight.”

“Goodnight.”

Eunsol silently watched him sleep on her shoulder.

And she couldn’t help but wonder, what if she scored 79 or 90 or 100 or even 88 on their exam wherein she based the number of her steps? They wouldn’t have met.

But thankfully they did.

By looking at him like this, it made Eunsol feel sleepy as well. “Jongdae?” she asked as she tried to stay awake.

“Hmm?”

“I’m sleepy.”

Jongdae then opened his eyes and straightened out his arms. “You are? Here. Just sleep on me then.” He said as he gently pressed her face on his chest

“We shouldn’t sleep you know. What if we miss our stop?” Eunsol mumbled in a half awake voice.

He smiled as he patted her head. “It’s okay. As long as you’re with me.” Jongdae said as he tucked a few strands of her hair behind her ears.

“Silly. We’re going to miss our stop if we would sleep.”

“I don’t care if we miss our stop or even if we reach North Korea. We’re together anyways right?”

Eunsol smiled as she comfortably rested her head on his sturdy shoulder. Everthing’s fine as long as she’s with him. It doesn’t matter where or when or how. Just him by her side is enough.

“Right.”

So guys. What’s the moral lesson of the story?

The moral lesson is… don’t study too hard to perfect your exams. Okay?

Hehehehe. Just kidding. Let’s all study hard and go to Korea someday. TT.TT

Okay???

So yeah.

There are some who wanted to prolong this story but don’t want it to be too long and dragging. Besides I have other stories to publish too. Hehe.

I’ll be posting a sequel for this. A oneshot sequel. And I hope you’ll like how it will turn out. Hehe. It’ll be out in February or March I think.

THANK YOU SO MUCH AND ADVANCE MERRY CHRISTMAS GUYS! <3

And about Yixing and Jieun’s story… Do you really want a YixingxJieun story? Like really really want? Well I’ve thought of something but... I don't know yet. Hehe.

I’ll be announcing this here since this is the Author’s Note section. I might have a Bobby fic. I’m actually already writing the first chapter. lol. Belated Happy Birthday to our Kimbap!

Can I ask somethinggg? What’s the name of EXO’s manager? Hehe.
