HYUNNIE!

Pinky Promise

During the soccer game Dara realized that Seunghyun’s cellphone was constantly ringing, but he showed no interest in picking it up. On its fourth time ringing, Dara got annoyed and told him to go pick it up.

“Oh my god, you do not know how annoying your phone is. Please pick it up.”

“Huh? Oh, sorry. I’ll go pick it up.” Seunghyun walked into his bedroom and took the call and didn’t come back out until half an hour later. He walked over to the kitchen to get a beer and just stood there drinking it. He seemed to be unhappy and just sad.

“What’s wrong? Did anything bad happen?” Dara now walked over to the counter leaning on the opposite side of him.

Seunghyun was still drinking his beer without replying to Dara.

“Seunghyun? You there?” Dara was kind of worried.

“Huh? Oh what happened?”

“I don’t know I’m asking you… Who called?”

“Oh, Eun Hye called.” Dara didn’t know who that was.

“Who’s Eun Hye?”

“My girlfriend.” Not knowing why, Dara felt disappointed, but mentally slapped herself for thinking that such an attractive man would be single. She was sure women basically threw themselves at him. One thing Dara didn’t understand, was why did Seunghyun look so unhappy after getting a call from his girlfriend?

“Why do you look so sad then? I mean she’s your girlfriend, shouldn’t you be smiling?” Dara put her head down on the counter, but still looked up at him. Seunghyun couldn’t help but think of how cute she looked at the moment, but snapped out of it when he heard Dara call him out. Seunghyun should be ecstatic that his girlfriend of 3 years called him, considering he hasn’t seen her in 3 weeks, but he felt indifferent.

“I’m not sad. What are you talking about?” Seunghyun felt the need to defend himself despite the thoughts going on in his head.

“Well you didn’t pick up her call, and now you’re just standing there drinking your beer with no expression on your face.”

“I would appreciate it, if you didn’t try to understand our relationship without really knowing us.” Seunghyun hated when people tried to point out the factors of him without him knowing himself and snapped at Dara. Dara looked momentarily surprised at his little outbreak, but realized that it was her fault and immediately apologized.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to pry into your relationship.” Dara was now standing up and playing with her fingers.

“, sorry. I didn’t mean to speak to you like that –“ Seunghyn was cut off by Dara when she said, “its ok, I didn’t mind. Um, I’m gonna go to bed. I have an interview in the morning tomorrow.” As Dara was walking away from the kitchen Seunghyun called out “good luck!” hoping it would make her feel better, but all she did was say a small “thanks” and go into her room.

Seunghyun let out a long sigh and continued to drink his beer. He didn’t know why he was so indifferent towards Eunhye’s call. They hadn’t seen each other for three weeks because she was on a business trip with her uncle in Malaysia. Both Seunghyun and Eunhye met three years ago at a business party held by his parents. Eunhye’s parents were killed in a plane crash when she was 4 years old and had lived with her uncle ever since. She grew up to be an amazing business woman, at the top of her game and breaking all stereotypes against business women. The Choi’s were impressed by her work and felt she would be good for their son.  His mother didn’t try to hide the fact that she’d be happy if the two got together. They began to talk and by the end of the month, they were dating. Seunghyun and Eunhye had their share of fights because of their lack of dates or communication but they always worked it out at the end. Despite the fact that she was older, Seunghyun never felt that factor matter to him. Sure, he missed the fact that someone called him “oppa,” but he’d rather have Eunhye call him Hyunnie. The nickname actually came from his noona, but after months of Eunhye teasing him; it became her official nickname too.

Seunghyun stood there reminiscing about the past years with her and was trying to understand what went wrong. It hasn’t been just today where he felt unresponsive to her calls or visits, and he didn’t know why he felt like that. All he knew was that at times he’d rather be alone than with her. These past weeks were lonely but not to the point where he was counting down the days of her return. She’d return next week and he didn’t know if he was looking forward to it. Seunghyun decided to shake off these thoughts and not speak of them. He told himself, it was only because they hadn’t seen each other in a while.

He finished his beer and walked over to his room to sleep early. Helping Dara set up her room took a toll on him, and then chasing her around the room for the remote was just as tired. Seunghyun found himself lying on his bed, remembering his day with Dara and smiling at the events. He had fun. It’s been a while since he spent his Saturday in his own house actually doing something rather than sleeping. Seunghyun would never admit it to others, but he had a lot of fun with Dara and was glad she was his roommate. She was different from the other girls he had met. She was different from Eunhye… but he didn’t know if that was a good thing or not. Once again Seunghyun shook off the thought and decided to go to sleep.

When Seunghyun woke up the next morning, he knocked the bathroom door, thinking it was about time he took up that habit, and found it empty. After getting out of the bathroom he expected to see Dara in the kitchen cooking breakfast for both of them but was disappointed when he found no one. After having Dara around for the past few days, he had already gotten used to her and even kind of depended on her. Seunghyun noticed a hot pink post it on the fridge with neat writing, which apparently belonged to Dara, on it. ‘Good morning! I’m going to be out for most of the day because of my interviews. I thought you’d be hungry so I made some scrambled eggs and bacon and left it in the microwave for you to eat. The leftovers from yesterday are still in the fridge, so if you want to eat them for lunch, just heat them up. Bye!’ Seunghyun smiled reading the note and couldn’t help but think how lucky he was to have such a considerate roommate. He took out the omelet and bacon from the microwave and sat down to have his breakfast. He found it slightly weird to eat breakfast without having Dara talk to him in between bites. After breakfast he sat down to watch hopefully another soccer game, but there weren’t any on. However, as he flipped through the various channels, he passed by a familiar channel playing the drama Dara fought him for yesterday. He didn’t know why but he didn’t change the channel and actually began to watch the show. While watching it, he tried to make sense of the drama; Park Soo Ha had an ability to read people’s thoughts by looking at their eyes and he was in love with an older woman named Jang Hye Sung, who was a lawyer. Seunghyun had to admit, the drama was good. It kept him interested and he almost didn’t notice the doorbell ring. He got up thinking it was Dara and was excited to hear if she got the job or not. However, the woman at the door wasn’t Dara.

“HYUNNIE!’’ The lady exclaimed while hugging the tall man.

“Oh Eunhye-ah…”
