Haneul was disappointed to find that her memory had made no progress after her visit with the sisters. Feeling more discouraged than ever over the days that followed, she couldn't help but think that she might never remember the home she had been separated from.
That night, however, was going to be a full moon. Haneul had kept the small vial given to her by the sisters safely beneath her pillow, and she was anxious to find out if it would help.
To take her mind off things, Sungjong insisted upon showing her more of the human world, promising her that they would have a lot of fun. Haneul didn't quite understand what exactly they were doing, but Sungjong had called it 'shopping'.
The 'mall', as Sungjong had referred to it, was a huge building filled with countless shops and people. There were people everywhere; it was even more crowded than what Haneul had seen on the streets. They passed clothing stores, small boutiques, cafes, and even some small market vendors.
"Why are there pictures of humans everywhere?" she asked, noticing the multitude of advertisements that lined shop fronts and windows.
"Ah, those are just posters to promote things that are for sale. Companies get beautiful women to pose with their products, and somehow that's supposed to make people want to buy it more," he shrugged, and Haneul thought it was a strange concept.
Sungjong pulled her towards a display of cute accessories. "What do you think?" he asked as he eyed a headband with a flower on it. He stuck it on Haneul's head and smiled approvingly before his eyes shifted to the jewelry. "You would look nice with earrings, I think," he pondered as he held up a pair to her ears, "But maybe piercings are just a human thing."
She noted to herself that earrings must be a good thing if Sungjong thought they would make her look nice. But with a second thought, Haneul touched her earlobes, wondering what he meant by 'piercings'. It didn't sound very pleasant.
Would I fit in better if I wore earrings? Would they make me seem more human? Haneul wanted to ask, but she hardly had the time before she was swept off into the mall once again.
"Come on, let's get you some new clothes," Sungjong led her to another store, "I know the hyungs didn't get very much for you at home."
He walked into a clothing shop with upbeat music playing in the background and bright displays of weird headless statue things that were wearing clothes.
They look like humans, but they're not, Haneul observed the mannequins curiously, Just like me.
Haneul hesitated by the entrance. She looked up at the huge, illuminated boards around the mall with beautiful women modeling everything from clothing to food to beauty products—human women with never-ending legs, impossibly even skin tone
