Chapter Thirteen

Even when the Sun Rises

The next day was awkward. Rain wouldn’t talk to me and when he did he was rather formal.

I realized that morning that I still hadn’t apologized to him. I waited when he had his breakfast before him. It was a rather large plate of pancakes. I watched him slowly chew.

“Rain… Can I talk to you?” I asked anxiously as people were looking at me.

“What is it?” He asked sipping some of his water.

“About last night….”

“What do you mean?”

“Well….” Oh boy this was harder than I had thought, “I said something that was kind of.”

“Was I with you last night?” What was he talking about?

“D-don’t you remember walking off and leaving me at the park?”

“Park? What Park? Did I really go out with you last night?” This was just weird.

“Um… Maybe you forgot,” I decided.

“Forgot? I don’t forget,” he said cutting up more of his pancake, “you are mistaken. You are a waitress, not a friend.” This stung I admit and I decided to look away.

“You are right,” I said agreeing, though I felt it was unfair, “I am staff, you are a guest.” I made a note of anything he had told me before and I walked back to the kitchen, trying not to show my disappointment.

***

“Did something happen last night?” Bunny asked as she unloaded her tray of plates while I scanned my note pad for anything I missed.

“Umm no,” I lied tucking my pad and paper away.

“Come on, what is it?” I sighed.

“I said something that was kind of personal,” I told her, “and I did it on purpose.”

“Aww I’m sure you didn’t mean it.”

“No I did, that’s why I feel so terrible,” I said pressing my palms on the table and leaning.

“Well,” she turned to me, “did you apologise?”

“I tried but… he keeps shrugging it off,” I told her, “which makes me feel even worse.”

“Give it time,” she told me, “he’ll come around.”

“I hope so,” I told her, “I really hope so.”

***

I waited patiently at the entrance to the dinner hall for Rain. When he buzzed I thought he would be here but I guess I was wrong.

“Is she your waitress?” I heard an indignant voice ask. I turned and saw Rain walking with his manager and a woman I’d never seen was attached onto his arm. I felt intimidated by her lovely fair skin, large green eyes and her full head of wavy blonde hair. Even her body was impressive, hourglass that was nicely shaped by her tight strapless gown.

It was hard not to let the jealousy eat me then and there. “Good evening I will be serving you tonight, let me show you to your table.” I heard her give a rude laugh and I did my best to not look back.

Rain seemed to send me uncomfortable vibes as I sat them down, the woman sitting close to him. Rain seemed to be more focused on her than me.

So he’s just going to pretend nothing happened?

“What would you like to drink?” I asked staring at my pad and pen.

“A better waitress thanks,” the lady laughed. His manager gave me an apologetic look while Rain did not move.

“Umm sorry but I can offer you any of our beverages or our soft drinks.” The woman turned to Rain, running a finger along his shoulder.

“How about you decide darling?” I felt myself cringe.

Darling?

“Just a bottle of your red wine thanks,” Rain said. I nodded and jotted this down.

“Coming right up,” I said walking off, faster than normal

That jerk, I guess the stupid one was me!  I thought as I gave the order to the bar tender and waited for the bottle and the glasses.

***

The next hour and a half was torture for me. The woman laughed while Rain and his manager conversed in Korean. I felt like a sore thumb.

I was relieved when I could go for the night. Rain didn’t even say thanks or anything, he just walked off with the woman still beside him. Bunny came up beside me as we watched the pair. The woman lowered her hand and pinched Rain on the cheek. He jumped but still kept his composure.

“Oh that…”

“Don’t Bunny,” I told her sadly, “It’s not our place.”

“But you are the one that is meant to be with Rain not some plastic bimbo who can barely talk!” Bunny exclaimed. I walked off leaving her.

“Slots! Hey where are you going?!”

“It’s late; I need to get ready for practice.” I told her.

“Oh of course, see you back at the room!” I didn’t want to think about tonight. I just wanted to dance the anger and hurt away.

***

I wasn’t surprised when I didn’t find Rain there. He probably wouldn’t forgive me. He had the CD we danced to last time so I started to hum the tune as I danced alone. I stopped mid way, all motivation gone.

“What’s the point?” I asked out loud feeling tears sting my eyes, “without him it’s just another empty solo.” I packed up my belongings and left. I hadn’t even been there for half an hour.
