Chapter ten

Even when the Sun Rises

I came back to find a limousine waiting in the front of the lobby. I saw people walking through the doors and I had to stop. I saw Rain standing surrounded by a whole heap of men. He looked good in his suit, his hair was neatly groomed. Not slicked with gel which is how hair on guys should be.

What am I doing? I quickly started to go towards them. Planning to turn and enter the nearest door so he wouldn’t see me.

“Sam,” I halted. My body turned to him who was looking at me. His audiences were staring at me. I realized how shabby I must have looked in my cargo shorts and my huge baseball jacket.  I held up a hand in a feeble wave.

“Hi,” I managed to say despite the awkwardness.

“I’m going out to party, see you around?” I saw the faces of the others. Judging me in silence as if I was not worthy of the celebrities attention which in all honesty I am not. I nodded.

“Mm, have a good time,” he nodded too and then kept walking to the limousine. I heard the people muttering and talking but I didn’t catch what they were saying.

***

“Slots, I have to talk to you!” I jumped as Bunny stopped me in the middle of going to the dining room to serve Rain a late brunch from the other night.

“You’ll have to be quick Bunny,” I told her as I was carrying a hot tray of food.

“I hate to have to say this but,” I wanted her to get to the point.

“But what Monique, just tell me.”

“Rain has a guest coming to visit him sometime this week,” I saw her hesitant, I didn’t like where she was going with this.

“Ok, a guest.”

“A woman,” even if she had changed how she had said it; it wouldn’t have changed what she said. I wet my lips and didn’t look at her.

“I’m sorry Slots.”

“Sorry? What for Monique?” I acted surprised.

“Well… I know that you liked him. So for this to happen….”

“Hey it’s fine,” I lied, “it’s his life. I have no business in it. I’m just his waitress.”

“You sure you’re ok?” Bunny asked peering in to check me. I nodded fast.

“Yes, I am.”

“Ok, that’s good. Well I’d better get to it, I’ll see you.” She kept on walking, leaving me with my tray. I breathed out hard, letting my air slowly escape.

It’s not a problem, I said in my mind as I walked to his table to serve his food. I was unable to look at him for long and when I did I didn’t keep eye contact.

Then why does it feel like it is?

***
I served Rain by the pool, not watching him though but rather the kids who were jumping in to the pool. I’d been there for more than an hour and it was boring just holding Rain’s drink while he read a magazine.

“Mr Jung,” we both looked up to one of the lobby attendants who was coming towards us.

“Sorry to interrupt but you have a call waiting. It’s from Seoul.” My mind stopped.

That can only mean one thing…

“Thank you,” Rain told him. The attendant bowed and left. I felt Rain’s turn to me; I quickly glanced away when I realized I was watching him.

“You are free to go. I will call,” he stood up, grabbed his towel which was hanging off his chair and strolled away. I placed the tray on a close table. I sighed, leaning against my forehead in my hand.

“Hey Slots, I hope you’re in here,” I looked up to see Bunny open up the door. She seemed happy.

“Yes, are you alright Bunny?” I asked, wondering if it was a guy that was making her grin.

“I just heard from the lobby attendants talking,” Bunny jumped onto my bed leaning in towards me, “according to them Rain’s female guest rang him about two hours ago saying she had to decline coming to visit him due to personal reasons.” I blinked hard.

“Are you sure?” I asked then biting my lip feeling stupid for making my intentions clear to her.

“Yes, so if you see Rain and he’s in a sour mood you’ll know why,” Bunny got off my bed, “but now you have a chance with him.” I grabbed my pillow and chucked it at her. She jumped when it hit her in the back.

“You’re mad,” I laughed as I received a pillow in return. We both ended up having a pillow fight which lasted until my transmitter buzzed.

“Oh looks like he’s ready for an afternoon snack,” I said placing my pillow back on my bed. I grabbed my apron and headed for the door.

***
I was full of anxiety and wonder as I waited outside his room. I knocked, he opened it shortly after. He had a solemn expression on his face plus his hand which was still holding the door handle; the one with the ring.

“Hey, I’ve brought the menu,” I flipped it open to peer at the choices, “so what will it be?” I tried to be friendly but he still seemed down. I had to cheer him up somehow.

“I know that there are some guests who like our nachos with the guacamole,” I suggested to him, “some prefer the typical bag of chips.” Nope still no different; I had to be creative.

“Or, I could get the chef to make you some yum cha,” I suggested, “It’s a personal favourite of mine. We use to have it at home on my birthday while my mum was still…” I felt a stabbing sensation to my heart. I stopped and closed the menu, the smile fading. I heard a chuckle and I looked up again to see him grinning at me.

“Sounds great,” he said. I was relieved he seemed happy, it helped me to recover from myself delivered blow quicker.
“Good,” I made a note on the paper for the yum cha, “I’ll go and talk to the chef and return with the options.”

“Sam,” hearing him say my name was unusually something which I liked. I spun around to face him.

“Yes?”

“This Friday night… Would you like… To go dancing?” I thought for a moment. I wasn’t scheduled to take any other shifts but just wait on him.

“Umm yeah sure,” he smiled again and closed the door. I let myself have a grin but then a negative thought came to my mind.

What if it’s just because he was going to originally go with his friend?

“I’ll just have to not think about it,” I decided as I went to the lifts, “if this is the only time I can be with him outside of business then I will have to take it.”
