Song 2: Super Junior M - Break Down [3/4]
Learn Mandarin With Me! (Music Version) -- Extra Study Materials
(Chorus)
(1st Part)
武装的心脏为你 Break Down [wu zhuang de xin zang wei ni Break Down]
= Armoured heart break down for you
*武装 [wu-zhuang] = Armored, Protected, Shielded
*心脏 [xin-zang] (mentioned in Song1) = Heart
*为你 [wei-ni] = For You
Depiction:
“(An) Armoured heart, break down for you”
The analogy used is ‘Heart’ and ‘Armour’.
After listening to the song, my interpretation is that the guy in this song is a really cool guy who doesn’t show his feelings and he doesn’t fall in love so easily as well, probably due to bad experience in his previous relationship as this would explain why his heart is ‘Armoured’.
So, finally this guy met a girl whom he fell in love with and so he decided to love her and he is not afraid of getting hurt in the relationship anymore.
剩下赤的告白 [sheng xia chi luo de gao bai] = Leaving behind solely confessions
*剩下 [sheng-xia] = Leaving Behind
-剩 = Remaining, left-over
-下 = down
So, when used together, it has the meaning of ‘(placing) down (what’s) remaining = Leaving behind.
*赤 [chi-luo] = , not-covered
*告白 [gao-bai] = Confession
- Only for ‘love’, when a boy/girl confesses his/her love for another boy/girl.
Depiction:
“Leaving behind solely confessions”
‘ confession’ here, in Mandarin would mean, ‘ONLY’, ‘SOLELY’.
So, the guy took off his ‘Armour’, not being afraid that he might be hut once again and is proving his TRUE love to the girl.
没防备的爱 [mei fang bei de ai] = Love with no defence
*没[mei] is a negative particle like 不 [bu].
- Eg. When saying ‘don’t have’, 没有 [mei-you]
*防备 [fang-bei] = Defense, Be cautious of
Depiction:
“Love with no defence”
Nothing hidden, everything is shown to win the girl’s heart.
奋不顾身要勇敢 [fen bu gu shen yao yong gan] = Selfless, must be brave
*奋不顾身 [fen-bu-gu-shen] (fixed phrase) = To be Selfless (despite that you might be in a danger)
- Used when you might be in a dangerous situation and you are being selfless as you want to help someone who is in the midst of danger.
Eg. When someone is drowning in the swimming pool, and you know how to swim and so you saved the person selflessly.
*勇敢 [yong-gan] = Brave
Depiction:
So here, the ‘danger’ would be ‘getting hurt’ or even ‘rejected’ by the girl.
Being brave is a must as the guy wants to make a confession.
挡开流言的子弹 [dang kai liu yan de zi dan] = Blocking away the bullet of rumours
*流言 [liu-yan] = Rumours
- This is different from 留言 [liu-yan] = Text Message , which sounds the same but with different characters.
*子弹 [zi-dan] = Bullets
Depiction:
“Blocking away the bullets of rumors”
The analogy here is using ‘Bullets’ to compare with ‘Rumors’.
I guess, there might be some negative comments once the guy starts dating with the girl and so that is why this sentence is so.
The guy promised the girl to be ‘blocking’, maybe by ignoring, and also, to make sure that the rumors wouldn’t affect their relationship.
(2nd part)
冷酷的面具为你 Break Down [leng ku de mian ju wei ni Break Down]
= Cool mask Break Down for you
*冷酷 [leng-ku] = Cool, Cold-looking, does not smile often
*面具 [mian-ju] = Mask
- Not the ‘facial mask’
Depiction:
This supports my interpretation that the guy is someone cold.
Also, this adds on to his ‘bravery’ when trying to express/show his love for the girl he like.
所有表情都透露 [suo you biao qin dou tou lou] = All expressions reveal
*所有 [suo-you] = Everything
- For those learning via the Formal Lessons, I would talk about this as well in future lessons.
*表情 [biao-qing] = Expressions
*透露 [tou-lou] = Reveal
-透 = Transparency
-露 = Reveal
So, when put together, both means, ‘Revealed till transparency level’, nothing is left hidden.
对你的崇拜 [dui ni de chong bai] = The admiration I have towards you
*对你 [dui-ni] = Towards You
*崇拜 [chong-bai] = Admiration
伤了也不后悔感慨 [shang le ye bu hou hui gan kai] = Even after hurting, I still won’t regret
*后悔 [hou-hui] = Regret
*感慨 [gan-kai] = A state of sadness
Depiction:
So here the lyrics states that, even if the girl rejected his love/confession, he wouldn’t regret or even be feeling sad.
只渴望你的依赖 [zhi ke wang ni de yi lai] = Only thirsting for your reliance (on me)
*只 [zhi] = (mentioned in Song 1) Only
*渴望 = Hope, Desired
*依赖 = Reliance
Depiction:
The guy doesn’t mind the girl rejecting him (‘hurting’), all he wants is for the girl to trust and believe his love for her is true.
I really love this song, the way the analogies are used, the way the lyrics are written,
it is descriptive of the guy’s point of view and also, I could sense how much he really loves the girl.
