Memory Cues

Baek to the Basics

With his legs dangling over the edge of the couch, Baekhyun twisted the fleece rabbit ears of his jumper around his fingertips impatiently. At first, he had considered cutting the plush ears; shaping them into two tiny circles – teddy bear ears, just like the jumper that Chanyeol had given him. But after seeing how happy wearing his sisters’ gift made Chanyeol, Baekhyun knew he simply couldn’t.

Casting his gaze downwards, Baekhyun studied the cards that were spread out across the coffee table, his eyes narrowed in concentration; his hold on the fleece rabbit ears tightening. Several minutes passed and Baekhyun refused to lift his head; Chanyeol sat on the chair across from him, watching Baekhyun carefully. He didn’t want to let Chanyeol down.

With a defeated sigh, Baekhyun sunk back into the couch, his hands falling into his lap.

“I don’t know,” he murmured sadly, not daring to meet Chanyeol’s eye. “Mister Giant, I can’t--”

Chanyeol watched Baekhyun draw his knees up to his chest in an attempt to hide his face and almost immediately, Chanyeol felt his heart ache for the other. It must be hard not remembering and Chanyeol couldn’t even begin to imagine how Baekhyun must have felt.

“Baekhyun,” he called gently. Pushing himself up from the arm chair, Chanyeol circled around the coffee table, perching on the side of the couch. “It’s okay. Sometimes, these things aren’t meant to be rushed. You’ll remember, but … It’ll just take some time.”

Lifting his head, Baekhyun rubbed his bloodshot eyes and nodded. “Okay,” he sniffed.

He was going to remember, one day – he was going to remember everything; where he came from, his birthday – even what he was. But for now, remembering even the simplest of things was proving to be exceedingly difficult.

“Look at me,” Chanyeol murmured, hooking a finger under Baekhyun’s jaw and turning the others face slowly. “All you can ever do is your best. I’ll try and help you remember too.”

Reluctantly, Baekhyun nodded. As long as he had Chanyeol with him, it wouldn’t matter if he couldn’t remember – he would, eventually. It just might take a while.

“Thank you, Mister Giant.”

Shuffling the flashcards, Chanyeol kept a close eye on Baekhyun’s expression; it would change whenever he saw a different animal on each flashcard – most of the time, however, it was an expression of confusion. Baekhyun’s knowledge of animals was very limited. Even if Baekhyun did not know the animal, it would help improve his memory.

“Do you know what this one is?” Chanyeol asked kindly and Baekhyun narrowed his eyes, leaning closer to the flash card to inspect it.

Baekhyun took in the circular form of the animal on the cue card; its dark colouring, its legs – all things that would help him remember it in an instant if he was to come across it again.

“Spider,” he said proudly with a nod. He knew this one – he had crawled under the couch after a spider when he was still big enough to fit in the palm of Chanyeol’s hand, of course he remembered. “That’s a spider!”

Shooting a quick glance up at Chanyeol, Baekhyun noticed a satisfied smile on his face; a simple smile from his Mister Giant was all the motivation Baekhyun needed.

“Great!” Chanyeol grinned, changing the flash card, tucking it into the back of the pile. “And do you know what this one is?”

Baekhyun’s eyes went wide and he scooted backwards, pressing himself hard against the back of the couch. Waving his arms, he tried to shoo the flashcard away.

“No, puppy! No! Stay away!”

Chanyeol’s smile faltered as he glanced over the flashcard; there, a bright, happy cartoon Corgi sat, its tongue lolling to one side in a cheeky grin. Quickly, he slipped it out of the pile, placing it face down on the couch beside him.

“Sorry,” he said quickly. “The puppy is gone.”

It took a few moments before Baekhyun would stop whimpering, and when he did, he slowly crept closer to Chanyeol once more, ready to try the next flash card. He certainly remembered dogs; any dog, even a cartoon of one, was immediately associated with the dog that had attacked him two weeks earlier.

“Mister Giant?” Baekhyun asked quietly. “Why are puppies bad?”

“They’re not all bad,” Chanyeol said gently, double checking the neck flashcard before showing it to Baekhyun. “I promise.”

Baekhyun wanted to believe Chanyeol but he couldn’t. The puppy next door had attacked him, another had barked at him whilst they were out on Halloween. All puppies were bad. Sensing Baekhyun’s hesitation, Chanyeol decided to prompt him.

“And do you know what this is?” he asked. Baekhyun shook his head. “This,” Chanyeol explained, “is a dragon.”

“Dragon?”

“Yes. Do you know what sound a dragon makes?” When Baekhyun remained silent, Chanyeol smiled. “Dragons roar.”

Hopefully, Baekhyun would be able to associate that with the image when he saw it next. Chanyeol held out the next flash card.

“Mister Ducky!” Baekhyun beamed happily. “Oh, but he’s missing his cape.”

“Good,” Chanyeol praised before replacing the duck with the dragon once more. “And this?”

Baekhyun drew in a deep breath. “Rawrgh!” he bellowed as loudly as he could. “It’s a dragon!”

Chanyeol nodded. He had just worked out a way to help Baekhyun remember.

Trailing behind Chanyeol, Baekhyun wandered through the city, pointing out any and all places he could remember in the hope of unlocking his past. On the rare occasion, something would catch Baekhyun’s eye and he would scramble to Chanyeol’s side to point it out.

“That’s where we went for our ice cream date when I was small!” he said proudly, jabbing his finger in the direction of the ice cream parlour. “And that’s the park I played at when we had our picnic on the hill!”

“The supermarket is just over there!”

“There is a blue car parked on the corner of the street!”

Chanyeol couldn’t help but grin at Baekhyun’s enthusiasm. He could identify things perfectly fine and seemed more than eager to point out anything – everything – that he possibly could. Halting at the pet shop, Chanyeol quickly checked the display windows for any signs of a puppy before calling Baekhyun to his side.

“Do you know what these animals are?”

When Baekhyun’s eyes fell onto a lizard’s statuesque form, frozen atop a small stump, he beamed happily.

“Dragon!” he exclaimed, pressing his face against the cold display glass. “Rawrgh!”

It took a good deal of coaxing to convince Baekhyun to leave the pet shop window and when Chanyeol had finally managed, something else caught Baekhyun’s attention. Scampering ahead, Baekhyun disappeared around the corner.

When Chanyeol had finally managed to catch up to him, Baekhyun was standing very still, his eyes fixed on the ground.

“Baek?” Chanyeol asked softly, placing a hand on his shoulder. “Is everything okay?

“This is the spot that the puppy barked at me after our date,” he said. “This is the spot where you promised that you would be my cape. This is the spot where you told me that you wouldn’t let anything happen to me. Do you remember, Mister Giant?”

Chanyeol blinked, taken aback my Baekhyun’s ability to recall such minor details before a small smile crept onto his face.

“Of course I remember,” he said. “And I still mean it.”
