Just a Couple

Baek to the Basics

A tangled mess of clothes lay, flung over the back of the bed and an array of shoes and mismatched socks littered the floor. Sprawled out atop the bed, still in his pajamas was Baekhyun, his legs kicking to and fro, his head propped up on his elbows. Sunny pranced around the room holding her prize, one of Baekhyun’s polka dot socks in , her head held high.

With his body half concealed be the wardrobe, Chanyeol flung shirts, jumpers and trousers over his shoulder, muttering to himself as he did so.

“No, no, this will not do.”

Tilting his head to the side, Baekhyun furrowed his brow. He was certain that the box of paints he had borrowed the previous week had been put back – and he certainly didn’t put them in the wardrobe. Unless – Baekhyun shot a sideways glance towards Sunny, who had flicked the polka dot sock onto her back and was puzzled by its disappearance – the puppy had something to do with it.

“Mister Giant?” Baekhyun asked, stretching his arms out so that they hung over the side of the bed. “What are you doing? Have you found Narnia? Can I come with you?”

With his arms full of clothes, Chanyeol turned, dropping them onto the bed by Baekhyun’s side. “No,” he said with a shake of his head. “Although if I had, you would be the first person I would ask.”

Rolling up the sleeves of his white cotton shirt, Chanyeol puffed his cheeks out and exhaled. “It’s starting to warm up,” he explained, gesturing at the small mountains of Baekhyun’s clothes that covered almost every surface of the room. “Spring is on its way, but you only have winter clothes. I don’t want you to overheat.”

“Overheat?” Baekhyun asked, his eyes widening. “Like, when you were cooking the other day and the saucepan boiled over?”

With a small smile, Chanyeol nodded. “Sure,” he said. “Sort of like that, except it is dangerous if you overheat and I do not want to see you get sick.”

“Sick?” Baekhyun scoffed. “I won’t get sick. Cape Crew leaders don’t get sick, Mister Giant.”

Reaching out to ruffle Baekhyun’s hair, Chanyeol took a seat on the bed next to him, moving a particularly towering pile of Baekhyun’s fleece onesies and duck jumpers out of the way as he did so.

“Well, even Cape Crew leaders have to listen to their Mister Giant,” he said lightly. “And you haven’t got any clothes for the warmer months.” Dragging his fingers through his hair, Chanyeol leaned back on the bed, his gaze fixed on the ceiling. “Jisoo is still in town,” he mused. “It’ll give you one last chance to see Jongdae before he heads back home for a few weeks. Would you like her to take you shopping?”

Baekhyun beamed happily, clasping his hands together. “Shopping!” he nodded. “Are you coming, too?”

“No,” said Chanyeol. “It’ll just be you and your friends.”

Jongdae buried himself into Baekhyun’s scarf, talking nonstop about his favourite places to shop. Keeping a watchful eye on the two, Jisoo walked a few steps behind. She knew that Jongdae missed his friend so wanted to make sure that they got to spend time together.

“- And,” he announced, tugging on the fabric of Baekhyun’s scarf. “When I get bigger, I want to become a fashion designer!”

“Jongdae the diva,” Jisoo smiled, guiding Baekhyun through the crowds and into a retail store. “Chanyeol has given me a list of things that we need to find for you, Baekhyun. But, you can pick out what you would like to buy.”

“Ice cream?” Baekhyun asked, hopefully. “I need ice cream.”

Jongdae snorted, pulling a face at his friend. “You need clothes first,” he said. “Jisoo and I will help put together the best outfits for you. Even Chanyeol would be jealous of you!”

Baekhyun chewed his bottom lip, stuffing his hands into the pockets of his trousers. “But,” he said quietly. “I don’t want Mister Giant to be jealous of me.”

“Oh yes you do,” Jisoo grinned, offering Jongdae a wink. “He’d be jealous that we got to spend time with you today and he didn’t. It never hurts to want to dress yourself up for the one you love. And just imagine what his reaction would be when he sees the one he loves not dressed in duck print sweaters?”

Glancing down, Baekhyun tugged at his knitted jumped nervously. He was quite fond of the jumper, the large duck stitched into the middle reminded him of Mister Ducky, perhaps the most reliable of the Cape Crew members. But if it meant that Chanyeol would be happy, Baekhyun would have discarded the jumper in a heartbeat, even if Chanyeol was the one who stitched the duck into the jumper for him.)

Making their way through the store to the mens section, Baekhyun frowned. Everything was so dull. There was no polka dots, no teddy bears and certainly no ducks. Creasing his nose, Baekhyun poked through the racks of clothing disinterested before his fingers wrapped around something soft. Pulling it from the rack, he held it up to Jisoo proudly.

“I would like this, please!”

“Great,” Jisoo said, taking the shirt from him and placing it into her shopping basket. “What else?”

Baekhyun’s face fell. “I need,” he began, crestfallen. “I need to find more…?”

“In, in,” Jongdae urged. “To go with your new look, you need a haircut!”

Almost instinctively, Baekhyun’s hands cupped over his head and he closed his eyes. “No!” he replied, his feet firmly planted on the ground. “I don’t want to have my hair cut! Mister Giant says it’s fluffy – like a bunny.”

He knew that bunnies probably were not the most manly of animals, and a fresh look with manly clothes (just like what Chanyeol had) was something that he yearned for. But Baekhyun had become quite fond of the nickname. “I don’t want to change. Why can’t Mister Giant just like me for me?”

“Oh, he does,” Jongdae muttered with a shake of his head. “Fine, we won’t have your hair cut, but they can style it for you. Then you can get all dressed up and surprise Chanyeol, how does that sound?”

Baekhyun’s face lit up. “Surprise?” he beamed, rocking on the balls of his feet eagerly. “Mister Giant likes surprised and I like being the one to give them to him.”

Chanyeol paced around the living room impatiently. He didn’t know how long it would take for Baekhyun to get changed, but he was sure that normally, it would not take this long. Perhaps, he thought, Baekhyun had tried to put his head through the arm hole. Or maybe, he had gotten himself tangled in his trousers.

All he knew was that the moment Baekhyun got home, there was no ‘hello’. There was no ‘I missed you,’ nor was there Baekhyun’s usual greeting hug. Instead, he had shooed Chanyeol into the living room, instructing him to wait whilst he put on his new clothes.

The suspense. It was killing Chanyeol.

What could Baekhyun possibly have purchased? More jumpers that he would have to stitch bear faces and duckies into? Not that he would mind…

With an inward sigh, Chanyeol shook his head. Baekhyun had enough time to get ready, but now, he was worried. Making his way down the hallway, Chanyeol reached the bedroom.

“Baek?” he asked, peering in. “Are you okay?”

Baekhyun stood in the middle of the room, his head bowed in concentration. “Buttons,” he muttered, attempting to fasten them as neatly as possible. “I don’t like them.”

Chanyeol’s lips tugged upwards into a small smile. “Here,” he offered, crossing the distance between them. Reaching out, he took hold of the hem of Baekhyun’s shirt. “Let me help.” Making quick work of the buttons, he took a step backwards.

“Strange,” he mused. “I have a shirt just like that one.”

With a happy giggle, Baekhyun beamed. “Yes,” he said knowingly. “I got the same one and now, we match! Couple shirts! We have couple shirts!”

“Well, then,” Chanyeol grinned. “I guess we do.” Looking Baekhyun up and down, Chanyeol felt the blood rush to his cheeks. Baekhyun looked so grown up, it was almost hard to believe it was the same person.

“Baekhyun, you styled your hair.”

“Jongdae said that I needed a change,” Baekhyun murmured quietly. “So I changed it for you, Mister Giant. Do you like it?”

“Oh, Bunny,” Chanyeol breathed, wrapping his arms around Baekhyun, pulling him into his chest. “Don’t ever think that you need to change, because you’re perfect just the way you are.”

Baekhyun’s ears went pink. “P-perfect?” he stammered.

“Yes,” Chanyeol replied softly, tightening his grip around Baekhyun. “To me, you are perfect.”
