Of Chocolate Hearts and Rose Petals

Baek to the Basics

With his nose pressed against the glass window of the shop front, Baekhyun stared inside the sweet store, his eyes as wide as saucers. A string of tiny paper hearts decorated the top of the display window in an array of pastel pink and soft rose.

Atop a blanket of rose petals, various sweet treats and heart print teddy bears lay, meeting Baekhyun’s gaze with glassy button eyes. The rich scent of chocolate drifted through the open door making Baekhyun’s mouth water.

A hand wrapped around Baekhyun’s shoulders, Chanyeol’s sweet voice rang in his ears.

“Bunny, what are you looking at?”

“Chocolates!” Baekhyun explained, prying his face away from the glass, his breath fogging up the display window. “And teddy bears! But – “ he creased his brow, his lips twisting into a frown. “Why are they hearts?”

“Er,” began Chanyeol, uncertainly. “What do you mean?”

Gesturing to the tiny chocolate heart displays, Baekhyun cleared his throat. “Them!” he said. “Right there! Just last week, there were sea shells on the shelf! Did they become – “ Baekhyun paused, searching his mind for the right word. “Did the sea shells become ink-stinked?”

Extinct,” Chanyeol corrected smoothly. “No, the sea shell chocolates will be back soon, don’t worry. All of this – “ he gestured towards the heart display “ –  is for Valentine’s Day.”

Baekhyun nodded slowly in understanding. “Valentine’s Day,” he repeated. “Is that a day for teddy bears and chocolates? I like this day already.”

“Sort of,” Chanyeol replied, guiding Baekhyun away from the window. “It’s a day to share with the one you love most. You send them cards, you give them chocolates and roses. You make them feel special.”

“Special?” Baekhyun asked, his eyes lighting up. This was the perfect opportunity! Baekhyun was going to make Chanyeol feel as special as possible for Valentine’s Day.

Research. It was absolutely necessary for Baekhyun if he was to give Chanyeol the best Valentine’s Day present ever.  An array of the most romantic movies lay scattered across the coffee table (Baekhyun had excused himself from Chanyeol’s side and showed himself into a video rental store, his pocket money at the ready, and demanded the worker point out the most romantic films possible.)

Cringing at the scene, Baekhyun shook his head. Clearly the store worker had a vastly different idea of romantic. Where was the chocolates? The teddy bears? He could learn more about Valentine’s Day watching My Little Pony.

Baekhyun’s eyes widened in realisation. He could watch My Little Pony! Hearts and Hooves Day was practically the same thing as Valentine’s Day – although, with a much catchier sounding name. Quickly ejecting the rental dvd, Baekhyun scrambled for his My Little Pony collection, scanning the back of each case for the episode list.

Chocolates, cuddles, love hearts, picnics under the stars – no rose petals, but Baekhyun could work that into his scheme somehow. He was sure of it.

Leaning backwards, Baekhyun could peer straight through the walkway and into the kitchen where Chanyeol sat, headphones in, working on a canvas. Baekhyun grinned. Yes, this was going to be the best Valentine’s Day Chanyeol has ever had.

Off-cuts of brightly coloured card, crinkle cut craft scissors and crayons littered the surface of the coffee table; Baekhyun’s masterpiece, his Valentine’s Day card for Chanyeol, clutched tightly in his hands.

It seemed that each time he made something for his Giant, he got craftier and craftier. That thought alone made Baekhyun’s heart swell with pride. If Chanyeol had liked the very first card that Baekhyun had ever made him, he was sure to love this just as much – if not more.

Quickly packing away his belongings, Baekhyun tucked the card behind his back and started down the hallway – the bedroom was the perfect place to hide the card and carry out the second half of his plan.

Peering through the entrance into the kitchen, Baekhyun frowned. Chanyeol still sat in front of his canvas, his eyes narrowed in concentration, but he had unplugged his earphones, the soft music reached Baekhyun’s ears.

Turning up his nose, Baekhyun hurried into the bedroom. Why did Chanyeol have to like such awful music? The chorus, Baekhyun hated to admit, was pretty catchy, though.

It was still the eve of Valentine’s Day, so Baekhyun had plenty of time to make Chanyeol some chocolates and, perhaps, a twilight picnic. But there wasn’t anything wrong with a little bit of an early surprise, right?

Phase one of Baekhyun’s Valentine’s Day surprise was almost ready and if Chanyeol liked this, then he was sure to love the chocolates that Baekhyun would make him tomorrow.

With a small smile on his face, Baekhyun set his handmade card down on Chanyeol’s pillow before fishing the handful of (crumpled) rose stems - that he had picked from the neighbouring apartment block’s front yard on the way home - out from under the bed.

The roses looked disheveled and absolutely nothing like the bright, lush roses that he saw in those rented romantic films and My Little Pony. Baekhyun’s lips curled upwards into a small smile. He could make them work.

“Mister Giant!” Baekhyun called, bursting into the kitchen with slightly more enthusiasm than he had planned. Straightening himself up, Baekhyun adjusted his shirt and inhaled sharply. “Mister Giant,” he repeated, calmer this time. “Come look!”

“Look?” Chanyeol asked, setting his paint pallet down onto the kitchen counter. “At what, Bunny? What’s wrong?”

Baekhyun rocked on the balls of his feet eagerly and extended a hand to Chanyeol. The other he kept tucked behind his back, the rose stems rough against his fingers.

“I have a surprise for you,” he said softly. “Please come look, I worked really hard.”

Getting cautiously to his feet, Chanyeol allowed Baekhyun to take hold of his hand and guide him into the bedroom.

“I made you a Valentine’s Day surprise!”

Chanyeol blinked. “Er – “ he began, confused. “Why are there rose petals all over the bed?”

Baekhyun grinned, holding out the rose stems; the petals had been picked off entirely, leaving only the browning bud behind. “For you,” he said, gesturing for Chanyeol to take them. “I saw in a movie that when you really love someone, you put rose petals on their bed!”

Baekhyun’s eyes moved from the petals scattered over the blanket to the browning rose stems that Chanyeol still had not accepted. “I wanted to scatter  petals and give you a bouquet of them but … I didn’t have enough roses. So I guess this way, you can have both, right?”

Scratching the back of his neck nervously, Baekhyun waited for Chanyeol to take the wilted stems before eagerly guiding his giant towards where the card lay on the pillow.

“I made this just for you,” he said proudly, watching with delight as Chanyeol took up the card and read over it, a small smile on his face. “I hope you like it.”

“Baek,” Chanyeol breathed. “Bunny, I –  It’s perfect, thank you.”

Baekhyun’s heart swelled with happiness and he wrapped his arms around Chanyeol’s waist, nuzzling his face into his giant’s chest.

“Happy early Valentine’s Day, Mister Giant. I love you.”
