Friends in High Places

Baek to the Basics

Baekhyun didn’t understand the point of Halloween. He didn’t know why people would decorate their houses in spiderwebs or other ghoulish, nor did he understand just why at a certain time on the night of Halloween, the streets were teeming with people, all walking from one door to the next …

What person in their right mind would want to give sweets out to complete strangers? Baekhyun knew that the only person he would even consider sharing sweets with was Chanyeol.

But perhaps what confused Baekhyun the most about Halloween was not the spiderwebs and carved pumpkins that adorned the doorways and front gardens of houses, nor was it the fact that sweets were being handed out to whoever asked – it was the people that roamed the streets that Baekhyun couldn’t quite comprehend.

Some of them were covered in blood and even more missing limbs – shouldn’t they be in hospital? They needed medical attention. Others were dressed from head to toe in outfits so horrifying that Baekhyun shuddered at the mere thought of them.

Sure, Chanyeol had taken him back home and attempted to calm him with cake (it had taken three slices of the dessert before Baekhyun had stopped crying), but he was still afraid.

Twisting the hoof of his Pinkie Pie plushie nervously, Baekhyun cast a quick glance out of the window – the sounds of contented laughter still drifted up into the bedroom. Whenever they would grow closer, Baekhyun would shrink back into the blankets, his cape wrapped securely around his shoulders once more.

Halloween was scary, it wasn’t fun like Chanyeol had promised.

A timid squeak escaped Baekhyun’s lips as a trick or treater halted just outside the apartment building, hollering at the top of their voice. Quickly, he rolled to his side, tugging on the sleeve of Chanyeol’s pajamas.

Slowly, Chanyeol’s eyes fluttered open and he stared at Baekhyun groggily; it took several moments for his vision to clear and for the other to come into focus.

“Mm,” he groaned sleepily. “Baekhyun, are you still awake?”

Baekhyun nodded, his bottom lip quivering; his eyes were locked onto Chanyeol’s. The shouts from outside grew louder once more and instinctively, Baekhyun snuggled closer to Chanyeol’s side.

“Mister Giant,” he whispered. “I’m scared.”

With a tired sigh, Chanyeol wrapped his arms tightly around Baekhyun’s waist, closing his eyes once more. “Don’t be,” Chanyeol said softly, pulling him against his chest. “I’ve got you.”

Baekhyun felt his body relax almost immediately. Breathing in the sweet scent of Chanyeol, he too closed his eyes.

“Mister Giant?”

“Mm?” Chanyeol murmured, too tired to listen.”

“I lo-“ Baekhyun hesitated, biting his lip. “Goodnight, Mister Giant.”

Trailing a few steps behind Chanyeol, Baekhyun looked at his feet. He wasn’t used to the stairs he was receiving, nor was he accustomed to the remarks; wearing a cape was perfectly normal, thank you very much. And liking Pinkie Pie certainly wasn’t a ‘phase.’

He would pretend as though he didn’t care about the remarks, or as though he didn’t hear them. Baekhyun knew he couldn’t stay inside all the time – he was willing to follow Chanyeol anywhere he went, however Baekhyun refused to leave the apartment without his cape. It made him feel safe.

And, even if he would have liked for Chanyeol to, he couldn’t expect the other to always be his cape.

“Mister Giant?” Baekhyun called out softly, almost tripping over his shoelaces as he tried to hurry to Chanyeol’s side. “Ah!~”

“Be careful,” Chanyeol sighed, stabling the other. Stopping down, he re-tied Baekhyun’s shoelaces.

“Sorry,” Baekhyun breathed, looking away – his ears red with embarrassment. “Erm, where are we going?”

“To see an old friend,” Chanyeol smiled, making sure that Baekhyun’s shoelaces didn’t drag along the ground.

“Yoora?”

“Not quite. But you’ll see.”

Baekhyun’s heart gave a lurch when the front door opened. He was enveloped with so many emotions that the only thing he was able to do was cry. Flinging his arms around the waist of the other, Baekhyun buried his face into their chest, sobbing; the other looking on awkwardly.

“Who’s at the door?” a familiar voice called from down the hallway. “Kris? Show our guests in.”

But Baekhyun wasn’t quite release Kris from his tight embrace just yet.

“You grew,” he sniffed. “You grew!”

“Yeah,” Kris grinned, trying his best to pry Baekhyun away as gently as possible. “You’re still short, though.”

Giving his friend a watery smile, Baekhyun followed him inside Joonmyeon’s house, Chanyeol a few steps behind him.

“Is everyone else big now too?” he asked hopefully. Kris shook his head.

“Not yet,” he replied. “Just the three of us so far.”

“Three?” Baekhyun asked curiously, tilting his head to the side. “Who is the third?”

Out into the kitchen of the unfamiliar house they walked until both Baekhyun and Chanyeol were met by the friendly embrace of Joonmyeon; Baekhyun’s tiny friends fighting to be the first to hurry over to him.

Baekhyun couldn’t hold back his tears as he crouched down to his friends, the smile on his face reaching his eyes. It was the happiest Chanyeol had seen him in a long time.

“I’ve missed you all so much!”

Moving quietly to Joonmyeon’s side, Kris wrapped an arm around his waist, offering the other a small smile. Sensing something was wrong, Joonmyeon furrowed his brow.

“I’m sorry,” Kris murmured, glancing from Chanyeol who stood on the other side of the kitchen counter back to Joonmyeon. “I didn’t realise and …”

“And what?” Joonmyeon asked gently. Kris shook his head.

Three.”

“It’s alright,” Chanyeol replied, placing his mug of coffee on the counter. “I have a feeling that he won’t remember anything before seeing his friends.”

“That’s likely,” Joonmyeon chucked as he watched Baekhyun crawl on all fours down the hallway, neighing loudly; his friends sitting on his back laughed and clapped happily. “Now isn’t really the time for that, anyway.”

Kris nodded slowly. “I know, but … I’m sorry. I’ll be more careful with what I say, promise.”

Joonmyeon smiled as Kris’ grip around his waist tightened. “It’s okay. Baekhyun will know eventually, but for now, just let him be.”

High places. Because Kris is tall.

If you don't understand the ending, that's good.
If you do, hukk. Speculate quietly. ;w;

And don't forget ... Chanyeol has a sister. :P
Happy guessing~~
