Paying Back

It’s Your Fault For Getting Adopted!

I sat through the rest of my classes, a pit in my stomach. I tried to keep my mind off the deal, but I couldn't help but think. I mean, who wouldn't worry if they were made to be a 'dog' for an entire day, and forced to do everything their 'master' told them to do. Today was only the second day of school, and my brother's already hanging out with the wrong crowd AND bullying me. Bravo Mi-hyun. What a spectacular start of the new school year.

As soon as the bell rang, I rushed out of school as fast as possible, hoping to avoid Luhan and his new, awful, 'friends'. I succeeded in getting on the bus earlier than Luhan usually does. On my way home, I tried to think of a plan for tomorrow. I would have my phone on at all times, if they should try to do something indecent, I would ring the police immediately. I should carry pepper spray with me, just for self defense.

No matter how I looked at the situation, I still couldn't believe that Luhan would be the one doing this. What the hell happened to my sweet, kind, caring brother? I felt as if he just suddenly changed, his behavior, his personality, his everything. But when I thought through everything clearly, I realized something that I hadn't been keeping my mind on. Luhan and I fought and bickered a lot lately...

During the summer break, this boy had several mood swings. I never really thought about it that much since all that's been on my mind was Sehun's proposal and our relationship. Maybe I should have paid more attention to Luhan, maybe then this wouldn’t have happened...

Luhan and I didn't talk for the rest of the day, again, it was a terribly silent and awkward evening in the house. My parents seemed to notice something was going on. After dinner, my mother came to my room to have a little 'chat'. Which, for those of you who don’t know, is parent speak for interrogation time.

Sitting on the bed, she gestured for me to sit as well. "Mi-hyun, I noticed you and Luhan have been ignoring each other recently, did you two fight?"

I avoided my mother's gaze and focused on a poster on the wall. "No, of course not," I lied. I didn't understand why I chose to hide the truth from my parents. All I wanted at the time was for her to stop asking.

She paused for a second, "Is there anything you'd like to tell me?"

What did she mean by that? I was getting anxious as time  passed. Debating whether to tell her the truth or not, I thought about the consequences of either options and came to a conclusion. I just have to endure it for one day, then I would get my wallet back like nothing ever happened. "No mom, everything is fine. Luhan and I are both busy this week, so we didn't really have the time to talk," I said weakly.

My mother looked at me and nodded, "Alright, I was just worried about you two, go back to doing your things now." She left my room and gently shut the door behind her.

I jolted awake as my blankets were ripped from my bed. Sitting up in surprise, I found Luhan standing by the end of my bed with my blankets in his arms. He had a smug smirk on his face as I looked at him in confusion.

"What do you want?" I questioned and rubbed the sleep out of my eyes.

"Get up dog, we are leaving for school early," he replied, smirk still perfectly intact.

I mentally face palmed as I remembered the deal we made. "It's already starting?"

He smiled, "Yep, hurry up and get dressed, I'll wait for you downstairs."

"Why are we leaving early?" I complained and slowly got out from bed.

Luhan smirked at me, "Dogs shouldn't question their master."

I scowled and cursed him under my breath before running to the washroom to wash up. I did as Luhan told me to. I got dressed as fast as I could and packed my things before heading downstairs. As I walked down, my mom was surprised to see me up so early. She didn't start preparing breakfast yet, but Luhan told her we'll be going out for breakfast.

My brother lead me out the the house. As I walked down the road, the air was fresh and cool and smelt of freshly cut grass. The sun shone brightly in the sky and birds chirped on the trees. To my surprise, Luhan did take me to a little restaurant for breakfast, we had pancakes and sausage. Luhan didn't speak much on the way to school. He seemed to be deep in thought.

After the bus trip, the two of us arrived at school. The front gate was clear of students as it was still early in the morning. As I was about to walk through the front gate, Luhan tugged me back by my wrist. "You should always follow your master, Mi-hyun, bad dog," he said, sounding so serious that I couldn't even tell if he was having fun with this or not.

Instead of going into the school building, Luhan led me to the back of the school. I had never been out there, but I had heard plenty of rumor about it being some shady student’s hangout place, and the drug dealing area. It might sounds pretty bad, but it couldn't be true, we were in a high school for god's sake.

To my amazement, there were actually plenty of people there. Some standing, some sitting, some had cigarettes in their mouth. I gulped in fear as I realized all the people here were abnormal. They seemed like dropouts, and some were way too old to be high schoolers. Amongst all the people, I spotted Xiumin, Chen, and Lay who happened to have a lollipop in his mouth. What the heck were they doing there?

Luhan began to walk toward them, I pulled at his sleeve to stop him, "Luhan, what the hell are you doing? Don't go, please."

"Just follow me, you want your wallet back, right?" He said with no expression and didn't slow down one bit.

The three boys noticed us as we approached. They waved at Luhan who waved back. What kind of mess has my brother gotten into?

"You brought her early like we asked, thanks bro." Xiumin said, clearly pleased with Luhan, who smiled. He then turned to me and tugged me closer by my shirt collar, "Hey little puppy, we'll treat you nicely, so don't be afraid okay?" He said with a smirk and patted my head. I glared at him and backed away as soon as he let me go, but he immediately pull me back again, "Being such a good dog, you should give your masters a kiss, don't you think?"

I almost choked on air, I should have known they are going to pull something like this...

"Come on little puppy," Xiumin whispered and leaned in. I scoffed in protest and quickly pecked his cheek. They all laughed. I looked away in humiliation, but when I looked at Chen's laughing face, I couldn't help but want to make his life miserable.

Shuffling closer to Chen, I poked his arm and grabbed him before landing a big wet kiss on his cheek. The boy gasped in surprise and quickly jumped away from me. He gazed at me in a horrified expression, "Oh my god, why did you do that, are you still trying to take advantage of me?"

It was finally my turn to laugh at his crying face. "You deserve to be treated like this," I said and tried to scare him by holding my arms out. Before I could bully Chen any further, someone grabbed my arm and tugged me away.

I turned around to find Lay holding onto my wrist. He had a lollipop in his mouth. He held the candy and it while gazing at me intensely. Taking the candy out of his mouth, he swallowed and pulled me closer. I looked at the purple colored candy to avoid looking at him in the eye. Lay released my arm and forcefully tilted my chin up, making me look at him. "Stop looking at my candy, look at me."

"What? Why?" I managed to choke out.

His lips curved into a small smile, showing off his cute dimples on either side of his cheek, "If you wanted my lollipop that bad, why don't you taste it?"

I shook my head and opened my mouth to protest, "It's ok, I don't wa-" Before I could finish my sentence, he jabbed the candy into my mouth and twirled it around. The sweet grape flavoring invaded my taste buds. I swallowed the taste and backed off when he retracted the candy from my mouth. I didn't know how to respond. From the side of my eyes, I caught discomfort on Luhan's face, but he didn't say anything.

"Did you like it?" Lay said teasingly and touched my lips with a finger. My heart pounded in my chest. I shook my head. "No? Well I guess I'll have to make you try more until you find the one that you enjoy," he said with a smirk.

"Guys, the bell might ring soon, let's head inside," Luhan spoke up, the other boys nodded along. When his eyes met mine, a twinge of guilt swept over his face and he quickly avoid my gaze. What is up with that boy?

I never thought I'd say this, but I loved the two classes where I was free from my brother and those other idiots. When the lunch bell rang, I sluggishly exited the classroom and headed to my locker, trying to avoid the boys along the way. But disaster struck when I found a note on the bottom of my locker. I picked it up in apprehension. The piece of paper smelled strongly of cologne. I wrinkled my nose in disgust, and opened it.

Meet us in front of the boy's washroom in hall B, if you don't get there within 5 minutes after the bell rings, your wallet is going down the toilet.

I cursed under my breath and headed for the washroom. I arrived to find Luhan, Chen and Lay waiting in front of the washroom. Just like this morning, Lay had another lollipop in his mouth. I groaned and walked toward the boys.

"What do you want?"

A smiled curled on Lay's lips, "Is this the way you talk to your masters?"

I honestly wanted to punch him in the face that moment, but I kept my cool.

"I have more lollipops for you to try since you didn't like the flavor this morning," he said as he the candy one last time before holding it out to me. I turned my head away.

"Your wallet is getting flushed down the toilet," Lay said with a smile that showed off his dimples before the noise of flushing toilet came out from the boy's washroom.

I gasped, "You guys didn't do that-" Just like last time, the candy of shoved into my mouth before I was finished speaking. I glared and Lay who smirked and took the lollipop back. Chen laughed out loud and Luhan just looked away. "What the hell?"

"Did you like this one? It was blueberry flavored."

If I said I didn't, he would definitely make me try another one. "Yes, I like it," I responded.

"That's great, I have more for you," the boy said, I groaned and turned away. They are disgusting... Before I could leave, Xiumin came out of the washroom. He called for me to stop walking and go back to them, I followed his instructions.

"Mi-hyun, I actually have a big favor I need from you. You'll be a good puppy and do it, right?" Xiumin asked, like I totally had a choice. I didn't respond, and he continued. "You see, Lay, Chen, Tao and I all live together in one house. I'd like you to come over and help me clean the house, tonight." Luhan jumped a little and was about to protest before Xiumin shushed him, "Don't worry Luhan, you'll be coming along with us." My brother nodded, still not saying anything.

"What if I'm busy tonight?" I reasoned.

"Okay, it's fine if you don't come, the things in your wallet will sell for a wonderful price," Xiumin threatened and I sighed in defeat. I couldn't believe I received the order to go to their house after school and do labor. I wasn't the best at cleaning stuff, so if I do a bad job, they couldn’t complain.

The boys sent me away for lunch after the little 'chat' we had. But no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't eat my lunch at peace. Mina was worried for me when I told her what I had to do. She agreed to tell my parents that I'll be at her house if they look for me. I thanked her over and over, so grateful for such a good friend.

We took a different bus today, along with Xiumin, Chen, Lay. The bus wasn't as crowded since it headed to the edge of town. I felt like I walked straight into a trap. Even though Luhan wasn't on my side anymore, I still felt a lot safer with him there.

The destination was quite a surprise for me, we were literally in the middle of nowhere. A few houses stood around, and the streets were mostly empty. Fields of crops surrounded us and the location was rural.

Walking past multiple enormous front yards of mansion like houses, we stopped in front of an even larger house. Black metal gates surrounded the property. The weed was overgrown and the grass was in a shade of yellow green, clearing showing the acts of the owner's neglect. I was confused when we stopped in front of the gates, but almost gasped out loud when I realized that this was Xiumin's house.

"What are you waiting for Mi-hyun, hurry up and come inside" Chen said and opened the black gates. I nodded.

Walking up the dirt road that led up to the front entrance, I looked around and questions filled my head. Who the heck is Xiumin? Does he really own this place?

They didn't talk much before putting me to work. I almost fainted in devastation when I took my first step into the big house. The house had two floors, hence a staircase was present. The first floor was rather barren, not much furniture. The floor was covered in marble tile. There were dirty shoe prints, stains, and unknown substances everywhere. Other than the route that led to the kitchen, the rest of the floor was covered in a layer of dust, and spider webs filled the corners of the wall.

I looked back at the the boys who just smiled, "How is this place so dirty?"

Xiumin laughed a little, "Dirty? Mi-hyun, the first floor is the cleanest place in the entire building, you haven't seen the kitchen yet."

Suddenly, footsteps echoed around the empty hall as a tall lean figure ran down. I turned to find Tao looking at us in surprise. "What are you guys doing here?"

"Being a loyal dog, Mi-hyun is going to clean our house," Chen explained, excitement clear in his voice.

"I'm hungry, did you guys bring food back?" Tao whined like a little child and ignored me as if I wasn’t there.

Xiumin chuckled, "Alright, let's go out for dinner then, it''s about the time. Mi-hyun, you can go explore on your own, but be sure to get this place sparkling clean when we get back."

I wanted to argue but was cut off by Tao, "Get to work, we'll bring back food for you." And with that, the boys left. Seriously, they just walked back out and left me alone in this giant, creepy, dirty, ugly, old house. I heard the lock on the door click. I rushed over to find myself locked in the house. Heaving a sigh, I decided to get to work and leave as early as possible.

I walked to the Kitchen first. There were dishes piled high in the sink and left over, stale food shoved in the cupboards and left on the table. The freezer smelled of sour milk and it was a mess with rotten vegetables and food scraps. I wrinkled my nose and started cleaning. To my surprise, they had gloves and detergent of all kind. I cleaned and cleaned until the kitchen looked like a kitchen before moving on.

I did every chore around the house, from wiping tables, to sweeping, to mopping, to vacuuming, to organizing. I had to fill up 2 bags full of garbage from the kitchen alone. I looked around in satisfaction after finishing the work. There, I hope it's good enough to get me out.

Before I could take a breath, I received a text from Luhan.

Hey dog, the boys wanted you to know that they want their bedrooms cleaned as well.

I wanted to commit suicide right there. What the heck was wrong with those people? It was their bedroom for god's sake. I hopped up the stairs and opened the first door I came across. I jumped when I peeked in. It was like a trash dump. I pushed the door open with difficulty since dirty clothes were piled up against the door. The bed was messy and unmade with books, games, bottles with scratched off labels, and underwear hiding in the creases of the blanket. The floor was covered in all kinds of stuff, DVDs, plates, books, crumpled paper, shoes, more unlabeled bottles and as I looked closely on a plastic pack on the ground, condoms.

What the actual ? Condoms?

I somehow managed to enter the room and the first thing I did was throw all clothes in a laundry basket. I had to touch more than one pair of boxers with my bare hands. Dust bunnies flooded the floor. Dust particles tickled my nose and I started to sneeze, an allergic reaction.

I had a stuffy nose for the entire time I was in that room. I found a lot of weird stuff that I had no idea what to do with.

When I finished cleaning that room, I nervously glanced at the remaining door and a shiver ran down my spine. It scared me just thinking about the contents. To my surprise, the rest of the rooms weren't messy at all. There was one that was rather empty with nothing but a bed in there. I didn't understand anything.

The boys didn't come home after 8 o'clock. When they did, they brought the smell of delicious food back with them.

They all froze by the doorway when they glance inside. "What the heck, this place is so clean..." Tao murmured under his breath.

Xiumin looked up at me in surprise, "Did you actually clean the entire house?"

I sneezed before answering him, "Of course, I swear to god there was so much filth and dust in here, I have a stuffy nose right now from dust allergies..."

Chen walked in and looked around, "You actually cleaned everything?"

I nodded again, "Yeah I did, of course I did, and it was torture."

The boys all walked in one by one. Luhan took off his shoes and came up to me. There was a mixture of expressions on his face, I caught another flash of guilt in his eyes. "Mi-hyun, we were joking about making you clean the house. It was all supposed to be a joke..." The boys started laughing, except for Luhan.

"We didn't think you'd actually clean this filthy hell hole. If we wanted it cleaned, we could have hired a maid to do it. I can't believe you," Xiumin laughed and looked at me in a sort of sympathetic and slightly teasing gaze.

I felt heat burning on my face. I was almost shaking from anger. I couldn't believe them. Without any words, I picked up my bag and ran, blinded with anger, for the exit. To my surprise, Xiumin gestured to Tao who forced me on the ground. It all happened in a flash. I protested and fought with all my strength with tears rushing down my face. I screamed and yelled until my throat went dry.

After I managed to calm down, Tao released me and I lay there, unmoving. The boys didn't know what to do. I could see the feelings of regret and confusion on their face. They deserved it. They deserved to get hurt.

"Can I go home now?" I asked hoarsely, still stationary on the ground, as my throat was dry from all the shouting and yelling before.

The boys exchanged a glance before Xiumin spoke up, "No, our contract doesn't end until tomorrow, I command you to stay here for the night."

My eyes widened and I bolted upright, "What?"

"You heard him right, Mi-hyun," Luhan said.

I sighed and nodded. There was simply no more fight left in me. They gave me a half a box of pizza and some soda before sending me to that empty room upstairs. I didn't eat or drink. Not bothering to take off my socks or wash up, I lay down on the bed and closed my eyes.

~~~~
The boys sat in the living room, watching TV. Luhan wasn't paying attention to the flashing screen at all.
His mind focused on Mi-hyun, her painful expression appeared before him every time he closed his eyes. The feeling of guilt in his head was unbearable. He wanted to apologize, but was too afraid to hear that Mi-hyun wouldn't forgive him. What he had taken part in a moment ago was unacceptable, and he knew it.
It was almost midnight, and he hadn't even started his homework. He simply didn't care anymore. The time with his new friends made him change his opinion about life. Hanging out with them, he felt the pain inside his heart fade, the pain of losing his parents. These boys didn't seem to have family, they had each other, and that's what Luhan admired about them. They got the money, and the girls.
Luhan never thought about how they became the way they were.
The boy felt tapping on his shoulder, and turned to find Xiumin looking at him. "Yeah Xiumin?"
"Luhan, I've been wondering for a while now, what is your relationship with Mi-hyun? It seems like you turned your back on her real quick," the elder said. Before Luhan was given the chance to respond, the other boys chimed into the conversation.
"Oh, she is your girlfriend, right?" Chen asked.
"Have you done it with her yet?" Lay questioned and Tao laughed.
"Done it? For god's sake, she is my sister!" Luhan raised his voice, a little annoyed by the boys' questions.
The rest of the group froze. "Sister?"
"Yes, she is my sister."
Lay chuckled, "Oh, never mind, in that case, doing it would be kind of gross."
"You think?" Luhan said in sarcasm.
Xiumin held his hand up to shush the others. "But you have a thing for her. You told me you liked her before in class..."
Luhan blushed a little, "Well... We aren't related by blood, I was taken in by her parents."
The boys were amazed. "Really? Your life sounds like a story,” Tao said with a hint of sadness in his tone.
“Actually, all of our lives probably sounds like a story,” commented Chen.
"But hey, if I had a stepsister that hot, I'd bang her everyday," Lay laughed.
Luhan rose his eyebrows, "Really? You don’t think that’s wrong?"
"Why not, I mean, you guys aren't related by blood right? I don't see anything wrong with it," Lay said.
Luhan nodded and looked into the distance, "I see... Well, I'm tired, I'm going to bed now, where do I sleep?"
Tao laughed, "If you’re going to bang Mi-hyun, you know where to find her."
Luhan paused for a moment, as if he hesitated, "I probably shouldn't..."
"You can sleep with me in my room, I have a big bed," Xiumin offered with a smile. Luhan nodded and they all left the living room.
