Jejudo (Part 2)
Kim Jong Kook and the AmericanAs the servers brought over the small dishes that Jong Kook had chosen, they talked and ate, the sound of the ocean like white noise. He held a piece of tofu between his chopsticks to feed to her, and she laughed and briefly looked away, but he smiled and held it closer to her lips and, as she ate it, she held up a piece of kimchi to feed him, too. She mentioned that in America, it is a tradition for the bride and groom to feed each other a piece of their wedding cake, and she said then, again, how this time together in Jejudo feels like a honeymoon.
Jong Kook smiled and looked down, finding it difficult to keep quiet with this talk of weddings and honeymoons. He wanted so badly to tell her that, soon, they’d have their own wedding, and after that, their own honeymoon. Hawaii, maybe, he thought. He had been thinking about Hawaii since she brought it up that night in bed, not long before she had mentioned children.
He tried not to rush the dinner, but he couldn’t stand the anticipation, and so, after she had eaten the last strawberry on the plate, he looked behind them and gestured toward the assistants standing near the camera crew. They nodded. Jong Kook then held Jennifer’s hand and whispered in her ear. “Come with me,” he said.
She smiled. “Come with you where?”
He thought back on their first day together, when they were in the restaurant, still wet from the rain, and how he had asked her that very question: Come with you where? He remembered how she had answered back then, and as he looked at her now, the umbrella over the table shading her face from the sun, her eyes bright and her lips so pink, he answered the same way she had. “Everywhere,” he said. He held both of her hands now and she stood up with him.
“My heart’s beating so fast,” she said.
He led her away from the table and they began to slowly walk down the beach, the camera crew following them and the ocean sounds still filling the air. And then, softly, the notes of a piano faded in. Jennifer recognized the song immediately and briefly held her hand over , holding back her tears as she continued to walk with him.

They walked together until the song ended, the sounds of the ocean still in the background. He led her up to where the greenery bordered the beach, and as the camera crew surrounded them, he turned to her, his back to the ocean as he faced her, his hands holding hers, his heart racing. He felt himself breathing quickly and opened his mouth to say those words to her that he had been waiting to say for so long.
