A Few Days of Peace
Kim Jong Kook and the AmericanJong Kook followed Andrew’s directions and found the path behind the building that led down to the water below. As he walked through the brush, he grew suddenly nervous. He hadn’t seen or talked to her since she left Korea. But he looked down at the book in his hands. She still wanted to learn his language. That meant something. That meant that she had not forgotten him.
As he neared the river, feeling the cool air on his face, he saw her up ahead, sitting alone on a bench looking out over the water. He walked slowly up to her, feeling his heart beat fast, and then he gently placed the book beside her on the bench. She glanced down at the book and then up at him, and quickly stood to hug him tightly. “Jong Kook ssi,” she said, her voice muffled against his chest. She looked up at him with eyes full of tears. “What are you doing here? When did you get here?” But she didn’t wait for him to answer. She pulled his face toward hers and kissed him, her arms wrapped around his neck. He reached underneath her legs and picked her up, her arms still around his neck, her lips still kissing his. And he held her like that for some time as the cameramen circled around them, filming their embrace.
Afterward, they started walking back to her apartment, holding hands, and she told him about her father and how his heart attack had put him in a temporary coma. She had spent much of the weekend in the hospital with him, and when her father had woken up that morning and seemed to be doing well, she had returned here, needing some time away to relax. During this conversation, Jong Kook told her how he had met her brother, but he did not mention what Andrew had revealed to him abo
