The Disadvantages of Having a Not So Dumb Boyfriend

//first part of a double update because I decided to split the chapter in to two...
Enjoy ^-^

"He's going home."

"I was wondering when you'd say that."

Joonmyun's mother looked at her husband with an eyebrow raised. "Well, you don't have to wonder anymore."

"Look, honey. I know he misses home, but he has such a good opportunity here and I don't think he should give it up,” he tried to reason. “It'll be good for him."

"What'll be good for him-," his mother started, "-Is for him to go home. He’s stubborn and now he won't stop working. School wasn't the only reason he came here, but he's barely seeing us anyway so I don't see the difference."

"You shouldn't have told him he could go home earlier then." her husband sighed; he wouldn’t be like this if he hadn’t been given hope.

"Have you even seen him recently!? He's working harder but if anything, I think it's helping him distract himself. Heaven help him if he didn't have that distraction."

"Other people can handle this. He's strong, he can-"

"Studying abroad doesn't work for everyone, and he is one of those people,” she argued, “Plus it's always been his dream to go to Seoul NU. That's what he worked for and we took that away from him."

“So what, you want him to go back right now?”

“Well, that’d be good.”

“He can’t do that, exams are coming up.”

“Well, he can go after the exams then.”

Joonmyun’s father sighed.  “Listen- I don’t really think this is a good idea-“

“Well I didn’t think it was a good idea to send him either, and look, I was right!” she threw her hands in the air out of exasperation. She was tired of this argument but she wasn’t going to give up, she’d made up her mind.

“Honey, I don’t have time to-“

“Then I’ll ing sort out the transfer papers! He’s going home once the semester is over, and if you won’t let him go, then I’ll take him myself. This is our son’s happiness, not his education.”

Joonmyun’s dad gave in; his happiness was more important, after all.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

It was the next Friday when the transfer files were finished. Joonmyun’s mother, along with the help of Kevin and Amber had managed to stay completely undetected by her son, and Kevin had become so close to bursting out what was happening whilst he was in the dorm with Joonmyun that he felt like he was going to explode.

His mother wanted to keep it a surprise, and had managed to stay hidden from him the whole week, not that it was really that difficult, especially when he’d promised to visit that weekend, so he’d very nearly locked himself in the dorm trying to get all his weekly study done.

Of course, Joonmyun was studying when she and Kevin literally burst through the door, papers in hand. Joonmyun looked up from his books, eyebrow raised, before noticing his mother was there and looking more… confused.

“Mum,” he asked, “Not meaning to be rude, but what are you doing here? I am coming over to visit tomorrow…”

Joonmyun’s mother laughed, handing him the paper in her hands. Joonmyun’s eyes widened, looking from the paper to his mother then back to the paper and then to Kevin and then back at his mother and then the paper again.

Honestly, he was so shocked that he would have reverted back to speaking Korean if he could form words (something which he usually tried to avoid whilst he was at the campus, unless he was speaking to people back home. He found that if he spoke Korean too much there, he’d start speaking it to Eli and AJ and Jessica and just all the people that could not understand it and well, it usually didn’t turn out that well).

Kevin pushed his jaw back up and closed Joonmyun’s mouth for him. That’d dropped as well.

“Donkeys’ll fly in there if you keep it open like that.”

Joonmyun was so stunned by what the papers said that he didn’t even realize that donkeys couldn’t fly.

His mother looked kinda confused though.

…Eh, Kevin.

Joonmyun bit his lip, looking downwards and avoiding eye contact. His initial shock had now turned to insecurity and mistrust, and he didn’t know whether to believe her or not. “This isn’t a joke, is it?”

His mother shook her head, smiling softly, hand on his shoulder. “No, you’re going home.”

Joonmyun looked up, eyes watering as he stood up and launched himself on to his mother.

“Thank you, mum. Thank you so much.”

Kevin awwhed as his mother hugged him back.

“Don’t thank me, baby. We shouldn’t have made you come here in the first place.”

The two pulled apart, tears of joy running down Joonmyun’s face. His mother wiped them away with her thumb.

“Don’t cry, Joonie.”

Joonmyun smiled, “I’m happy mum.. I’m really happy.”

After the initial response to his returning back home, his mother and he had to get down to business. Obviously he’d have to finish the semester, and then he could return home as soon as it was finished.

“You’re studying too hard, I don’t like it. Now you only study what you have to study for.”

Joonmyun agreed, but he always had a nagging feeling that in the end they’d make him stay. It was a ridiculous thought when the papers said otherwise, but Joonmyun couldn’t help but be terrified. It was for this reason that he decided not to tell Yixing he was coming back, just in case.

He also knew that Yixing’s exams closely followed his, and Jongin would freak at him if he changed the norm during such a time.

Joonmyun knew that after all the work he’d done he probably wouldn’t need to study much for his end of year exams, but he had enough mind to know that if he failed these ones it would have made his whole time there redundant, and his parents very unhappy, so he wasn’t going to risk it. However, there were still weeks until final exams, and it was nice to take a break from everything.

Joonmyun found out how much he’d cut himself off from society when he finally pulled his head out of the books and realized how much AJ liked Jessica that very night.

…Or maybe Joonmyun was just really unobservant, because even Yixing managed to notice, and that was over video chat.

“Baby, does AJ like Jessica?”

“Huh, what?” Joonmyun looked behind him. He was sitting at the desk with the laptop, and Yixing could see everyone behind him. It was a Friday night, one that Amber had claimed a movie night and that everyone had to gather in Kevin’s and Joonmyun’s room for.

Of course, it was partly because she liked gossiping to Yixing in Chinese and she knew they were Skyping.

“Does AJ like Jessica?”

Joonmyun pulled a thinking face. “I don’t know…”

“How much have you been studying? It’s so obvious! Bring Kevin over here.”

“Do I really have to-“

“Now, Joonmyun.” Yixing glared.

Joonmyun didn’t need to be told twice.

“He totally likes her!”

“I KNOW RIGHT!” Kevin squealed, “She totally likes him back but neither will admit it and it is killing me.”

“Joonmyun didn’t even notice!”

Kevin rolled his eyes, “Of course. “

Looking at the pair, Joonmyun realized that yeah, they were kinda whipped.

“He needs to ask her out.”

“He won’t listen to any of us! He thinks she’s just being friendly.”

Yixing pouted, scrunching his face up in thought. “He wouldn’t listen to me, would he?”

Kevin laughed, “Well, you’re Joonmyun’s hot Chinese boyfriend, so he probably will. Plus, who can deny that dimple?”

Joonmyun glared at Kevin. That was his dimple on his man.

Yixing grinned at Kevin’s response, before pouting again. “…I can’t English though.”

“Just tell us what you want to say, and we’ll write a translation. You can read it, right?”

Yixing nodded, face lighting up as he typed out what he’d say and sent it, all in Korean, Joonmyun and Kevin translating and sending it back a minute later. They could see Yixing eyeing the message, and a few times he stopped to ask how to pronounce certain words. Whilst Yixing was alright with basic conversational English and could pick up a lot from random words, he wasn’t confident enough to translate the whole question.

Once Yixing had given them the approval to get AJ, he sauntered over and Yixing began to speak, starting the conversation like any normal person would.

“AJ, how are you?” he asked, Chinese accent coming through so much AJ had to stop himself from cooing.

“I’m great,” he grinned, “Joonmyun said you wanted to tell me something?”

Yixing nodded. “I think you should ask Jessica out.”

If AJ had been drinking, he would have spat whatever it was right out. “Pardon?”

Yixing wanted to jokingly say that AJ had interrupted him, but stopped himself when he realized that he didn’t know how.  “You two both like each other, it’s super o..obi….obvious! Take one for the team, bro. They’re all dying at the moment. Except Joonmyun, because he’s stupid.”

“HEY! Where’d you learn to say that?”

Yixing gave no answer to Joonmyun’s question, Kevin laughed and Joonmyun lightly hit him.

“But I don’t think she does,” AJ frowned, “She’s just really friendly.”

Yixing pulled a thinking face for a while, translating what AJ said to Chinese (he learnt most of his English there), trying to word his reply properly, and searching his brain for the correct phrases.

“Just give it a chance. I didn’t know that Joonmyun liked me, too.”

“COME ON AJ,” Kevin began nearly yelling, and AJ was glad that Jessica was too preoccupied to notice. “JUST DO IT AND TAKE ONE FOR THE TEAM. CAN’T YOU SEE IT’S HARD FOR HIM TO SPEAK ENGLISH AND HE’S PUTTING IN A LOT OF EFFORT SO PLEASE JUST FULFILL THE KIDS WISHES AND YOU’LL MAKE EVERYONE ELSE HAPPY AND CHEERY AND LIFE’LL JUST BE SWELL.”

Yixing had no idea what Kevin just said, but Joonmyun erupted into laughter and AJ’s face was pretty entertaining so he couldn’t help but giggle.

AJ looked at the screen, unsure written all over his face. “Are you really sure?”

“Yes!” Yixing replied, slightly annoyed he couldn’t say the word he wanted to. Language barriers sure were a pain. “Go get ‘em, tiger!”

Kevin burst into laughter, whilst Joonmyun looked more confused than anything.

“Where did you even learn that?” he asked in Korean.

Yixing winked, “Your American movies are weird.”

“SHUT UP GUYS, AJ IS ACTUALLY GOING TO DO IT AND THIS IS A SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGH.”

AJ walked up to Eli and bobbed down, whispering something in his ear, before the two stood up.

Ugh, it was probably one of their stupid intros.

“Hey ladies and gentlemen.” AJ started

“Want you to listen.” Eli continued.

“Wanna know what it is?”

“Haha, hear this.”

“Yeah, it’s our… Belief.”

“OKAY NOW GUYS LISTEN BECAUSE AJ ACTUALLY HAS SOMETHING REALLY IMPORTANT TO SAY.”

Now all of AJ’s confidence broke down, and he was left feeling incredibly nervous. Yixing couldn’t understand much of what was being said, but he knew what was going to happen and hey, this was intense (thus why his face was right up against the computer screen, trying to see as best he could.

“Uh, well, uhm,” he fidgeted, “Don’t worry!” he said, before turning and heading towards the door.

Eli stood in front of him.

“What are you doing, hm?”

AJ bit his lip.

“I’m tired?” he squeaked, it was times like this where Eli could be quite intimidating. “‘Cause I’m a top dog, so I say good bye.” he nodded, attempting to walk past.

Amber facepalmed.

“Don’t lie to me.”

“FINE, OKAY, FINE.” AJ threw his hands in the air, before walking over to Jessica, who smiled at him shyly. “Uhm, uh, Jessica… Do you reckon- I mean if it’s cool with you-“ he stuttered, and no one had seen him less smooth, -If you’d maybe uhm- consider uh- being my g- my girlfriend?”

Jessica giggled softly, cheeks turning slightly pink, whilst AJ just wanted to sink in to the floor.

“Depends what’s in it for me.” she smirked, and AJ knew Jessica enough to know it was a yes. All of a sudden his confidence increased, and AJ was back to AJ.

“Don’t deny our r squared pi.”

Amber and Eli both facepalmed, now.

“This is why he doesn’t do math. I swear he is so stupid like how did he even get here?”

Jessica stood up, playing with her hands. AJ took them and held them, before placing them on his waist, and then placing his on her waist and leaning forward, kissing her on the lips.

Cue the sound of whooping fanboys and the sound of Amber retching.

Oh, and Eli.

“I THOUGHT WHAT WE HAD WAS SPECIAL!”

AJ rolled his eyes, looking at him after they’d detached.

“We were never anything.”

Eli put on a face of mock hurt.

“So cold when you do it to me like that, frostbite but karma’s gonna bite back. I can’t believe all of the lies, building inside, now I know why!”

Amber facepalmed once again… Why were they friends?

Eli turned to Amber.

"I hate you!"

Chapter 25: This was one of the best Sulay fics I've read! I Loved all the main characters, but specially Jongin. He was just the sweetest :) I might have shed a tear more than once whilst reading it, you were just sooo good at writing the characters suffering. The storyline was good and I don't know why I thought they were gonna break-up after chapter 17, but they figured it out and I definitely screamed YAASS when Joonmyun finally was going home XD and the ending was perfect! Good job writing this!!! <3
