Luhan's fickle heart

The little things

((A/N - I haven't read through this so there are probably a billion mistakes.. ))

The steady beeping of machines, the footsteps of nurses and doctors passing just outside the door, the sound of the mask over Luhan's mouth pushing air in and out of his lungs as he was unable to do it himself and the almost inaudible drip of the iv hooked up to the boy's arm were the only sounds in the hospital room Lay was sat in. He had refused to leave the boy's side since Kai brought him to the hospital, hating the fact that Suho had made the other boy bring him here when given a little more time Lay could have healed these wounds himself.

Each second that passed without Luhan stirring felt like an eternity to Lay, he couldn't bare to see it.. to see the man he loved laying so helplessly in that hospital bed. What had been flawless, milky white skin now covered in dark bruising and angry looking blotches of red burns and blisters. His perfectly symmetrical facial features now dotted with deep cuts and lines of stitches. But the most heartbreaking thing for Lay was seeing Luhan's legs, the immaculately toned legs that carried the boy gracefully wherever he went were now strapped up in casts, potentially unusable now. It got to 1am before Luhan's eyes slowly flickered open, his left eye still half closed at swelling stopped him from being able to open it anymore. Sitting up straight from his slouched, half sleeping state Lay smiled softly at the boy and spoke softly.

"Hey there."

Despite the oxygen max covering his mouth and nose Lay could see a small smile in Luhan's eyes.  After calling in a nurse the mask was taken off and Luhan was able to have some water before the nurse left again.  Luhan's voice was a little raspy as he spoke but that was to be expected.

"Where's Sehun?"

Lay wouldn't lie to himself and pretend the question didn't hurt. He'd been the one that saved Luhan from being injured more seriously and Sehun was the reason Luhan was in the hospital. Biting back his pain Lay gave Luhan a soft smile.

"Sehun went home, his injuries aren't too bad so it's not worth him staying here."

Lay was silently hoping that Sehun would just leave without trying to see Luhan first so his small lie wouldn't be discovered, then maybe the older boy would realise that it had been Lay that saved him, Lay that had sat with him all day and Lay that would do anything for him. Not that brat Sehun.  Luhan looked a little confused at Lay's answer, not really understanding why Sehun would leave without seeing him first, but it was good to have Lay as company, even if Luhan did feel a little awkward around the boy after their breakup.

There was silence for a little while as they both tried to think of something to say, as Luhan opened his mouth to attempt a small conversation Lay's phone rang in his pocket and, smiling apologetically to Luhan first? lay answered the call.

"hello? ... now? ... I'm sure it can wait. ... Alright fine ... I said fine I'll be there in a minute."

Tucking his phone away Lay sighed quietly before returning his attention to Luhan.

"Sorry. apparently Kris needs me for something. Chen's going to come keep you company while I'm gone but I'll be back, ok?"

Luhan gave a small nod and half smile, speaking a quiet goodbye to Lay as he left the room, leaving Luhan alone with his thoughts until Chen arrived about 15 minutes later.  The teen bustled into the room with a smile on his face, carrying a small bag with a few things in for Luhan.

"I brought your toothbrush"

Smiling at Chen's perkiness Luhan gestured for the teen to sit down on the chair beside his bed, as much as Luhan wouldn't have minded simply talking about small things he had something he had to ask and barely waited until Chen sat to ask.

"Chen, what happened? How did me and Sehun get here?"

Chen bit his lip a little and played with his fingers, humming in thought before speaking quietly and a little slowly.

"Well.. none of us are really sure how the crash happened but.. Kai says his instinct brought him to the crash and since he could only remember where Xiu and I went on holiday he brought us to help. We saw Sehun first and he was kinda hysterical so we focused on getting him out first.."

Shaking his head a little at the guilty look on Chen's face Luhan gave the teen a soft smile.

"It's fine, I'm glad he got out safe."

Giving a small nod Chen cleared his throat a little before continuing.

"well, as we got Sehun out Kai came with Suho and Lay, Suho was passed out but as soon as Lay saw what had happened he kinda.. ran for you.. but the caravan, it kind of.. exploded.  We thought you'd be dead but Lay just got up and ran for you again, Xiumin helped him get passed the flames then Lay healed you as much as he could. He told me and Xiu earlier that he could sense you were bleeding internally.. a lot. But he managed to heal all your inside wounds and some of your burns but if he'd done anymore he may have ended up killing himself in the process, he used most of his energy Luhan, you know what stretching our abilities can do to us. He only stopped because you woke up enough to tell him to."

Noticing the pained expression on Luhan's face Chen leant into the older boy a little.

"are you ok? Should I get the nurse?"

Shaking his head Luhan tried to get his head around the fact that Lay selflessly saved him from dying, risking his life in the process. Speaking quietly Luhan looked at Chen, trying to give another small smile.

"I'm actually kinda tired, why don't you go home? I'll text you in the morning."

Nodding Chen stood up and put the bag of things he had brought with him on Luhan's bedside table before leaving. As he lay in his hospital bed Luhan couldn't help but think about all the times Lay had fought to protect him, even after Luhan broke up their relationship Lay was still protecting him, risking his life for Luhan. And Luhan had never appreciated it. Not when they were together and not before when Lay had always tried to make him happy. Luhan couldn't help but question himself, had he made the right decision in breaking it off with Lay? Had he just been distracted by the excitement of getting something he couldn't have? Was he just being selfish in his attitude towards Lay? He had no idea how to figure any of it out. None of it made sense right now. Had Lay just been acting as a friend in saving Luhan or did he still love him?

Did he still want him and if yes..

Was it just gratitude or did Luhan finally love him back?
