Chapter Seven

Lost In Mertan

The next morning Amy was awoken by victorias hands gripping her shoulder and shaking her about. She had discussed her excitement all night on retrieving her bear that she made Amy wish she had gotten it sooner.

Mary and arena, who had been just as angry and Julia who was fuming, had no choice but to leave the area at 10 in the morning, which was very early considering it was a Sunday, a day off from their days at work.

"We need to buy food too." Said Julia. "We're out."

"From now on it's agreed. You eat when you're hungry. That's it. We'll save more than three times as much food if everyone ate when they were hungry." Amy added as she placed a jumper on as to protect herself from the winter cold. "The shops are only opening."

"Sorry Amy..." said Victoria. "I know that since my dad stopped paying for our bill you have been struggling, working twice as much do."

"You know... if you guys weren't mucking about half as much you'd make as much as me you know?" Amy said shaking her head. "Anyway forget it. You never understand anything I say."

"I do Amy..." said Victoria, her eyes tearing.

"No you don't." Said Julia. "It's hard you know? A rich girl like you would never understand the struggles that girls 'less fortunate' have to go through do you? I guess not. Maybe you should try and pick up a book some day."

"I have picked up a book thank you very much!" she said snobby and shook her head imitating Julia's persona.

"A book that ISN'T manga." Said Julia.

"Manga is a book!" complained Victoria.

"IT ISN'T! HOW MUCH DO YOU WANT A BET ON THAT?" she replied.

"STOP!" Amy yelled. "Please just stop. It's so hard you know? I hate the person I've become... I still don't understand why it's so easier to destroy our lives then to make them better. I realise now who really cares for our survival and who actually notices the things that happen around here and care."

Mary went to hug her. "Aww Amy its okay."

"No its not!" she replied.

"Come on Amy." And she led her out the door.

After some grocery shopping they went to the cities dump, arena's and especially Marys worst nightmare. Mary was an especially clean person who couldn't even stand her hands dirty let alone air carrying and transferring particles of bacteria, arena was a drama queen and Victoria now, even the environmental conditions couldn't stop Victoria from thoughts of achieving her bear, which made Amy feel even worse, because Amy knew that we weren't going to find it. If there was any chance, she should've lead her to the bridge, which was impossibility because possibilities were the jewel which she taped to the bear had carried it down to the bottom of its depts, she was surprised that Victoria could even carry it all day.

But at least she showed her some dedication... right? Though it could've been mistaken for deception, but she was going to try though as though there were chances that it could've been there.

"Here we are." Amy said as she carried the bags of bread, milk and cake and other groceries. She had led them to a mountain of rubbish and the huge pile on the left was only the least of it. "Let's get started."

"No..." said arena. "Can we go now...?"

"No!" said Victoria.

"We'll buy you a new one!" said Mary holding her breath.

Amy remained silent without complaint, this was dedication right?

"This smells like and whether you like it or not, I'm getting out of here. It's not my bear and I don't care about it so whatever." Said Julia.

"HEY!" said Victoria and began cringing.

"It's okay Victoria." Amy said, putting her hand on her shoulder. She was surprised that everyone was still standing here. "You guys can go, I'll look."

Amy walked forward; this was probably the cleanest rubbish area in existence of the earth. Only to her surprise, heard weak male voices, and she walked forward stupidly out of curiosity, and her instincts pulled herself forward, there, she saw seven male boys, their facial hair unshaven and had covered their beautiful faces which she could not recognise except for their ragged appearance and dusty worn clothes, their hair long and un-brushed and their face almost pale from hunger.

They were speaking what seemed to be Korean and what she thought was after she had managed to recognise it after her encounters on websites which Arena made her watch but which she had no particular interest in.

The boys looked at her instantly. She was caught and she couldn't hide her presence. She had just witnessed eight starving men and with food on the right of her hands, she couldn't just let them starve, it'd be almost like not stopping accounts of future suicide when exposed to. She ran away from the scene and hated that she was so considerate and sensitive to the needs of others.

"Amy I can't stay here!" said arena and Mary once I had come in view.

"Guys, there's these eight boys!" Amy said quickly. "They look like their starving... I'm giving the food I paid for them."

"But what are we going to eat?" they said.

"I'll pay another lot of food, since I paid for this, I'll pay for the other lot of food for you okay?" Amy said.

Arena looked around and whispered. "Just leave them like that."

Amy looked disgusted. "What? No!" she yelled, almost a bit too loudly. "We're not, I'M not leaving them like that, you can go but there's no way I'm going to let someone starve when I can do something about it."

"Oh come on, Amy, just walk away. I mean, you wouldn't have known them unless we didn't come here." Said Mary.

"Yea!" said Victoria. "They can get there own food."

Amy smacked her head. "Just go!" she said. "I'm going to give them food." And walked forward, in directions to where they were, but the others, not being able to live with themselves if something bad had happened to their dear friend so they followed her and when they had reached the eight men, on the floor, deprived for energy, their insides filled with fear. Though the town was prejudice and though they were an odd couple, they couldn't help but feel some feelings of prejudice, they were brought up in a world of it and they couldn't help but feel some feelings of it.

"Amy..." whispered arena. "They look like junkies. Lets go..."

"No." Amy grunted, annoyed.

"Please...?" she said, wanting to run.

Amy revealed herself and the men looked, then at the pile of food in her hands. "Are you hungry?" she asked.

They said nothing and it was only then that Kibum nodded his head, and then everyone followed.

"Here..." She said and placed the food on the ground and backed away, they looked at her then lunged forward, devouring the bits of bread and butter and the creamed cakes, the chips and all those of sort into the openings of their mouths.

They said nothing and realised she had breakfast on her other hand and walked forward, and didn't believe that she was doing so.

"Here..." Amy said. "I have a bit of food, do you want some?" and she dropped the food softly on the floor and before she knew it a manly hand clenched her wrist and her heart skipped beats.

"Thank you." he said weakly and her eyes widened.

Smiling she said. "You're welcome."

He let go. she could see the gentle warmness of his eyes.

"Would you like some cake too?" she said and gave him her breakfast on her other hand.

He smiled back at her.

"I'm kangin." Said kangin and he extending his arms for her to shake it. "You are my saviour, I worship you."

"Thank you!" said ryeowook and hang geng and the others.

"Um, I'm Amy." She replied and turned to her left and saw sungmin staring at her.

others friends emerged from the darkness. "Amy..."

"Thank you. We were starving." Said heechul.

"Oh..." said Amy. "Sorry."

"No its okay." They replied.

"I hope this isn't rude of me, but what are you guys doing here in a place like this?" Amy asked.

"We don't have homes." They replied.

"Oh..." said Amy. "Um, if you're okay with this, would you guys like to get a shower back at our home?"

The looked at each other and discussed in Korean.

"Hey, just because she's a girl doesn't mean we shouldn't take stranger danger into consideration." Said donghae.

"She seems nice and her friends!" said ryeowook. "We should go!"

"I'm going with ryewook." Said kangin. "I don't know about you guys, I'm going."

"Me too." They said.

"All this dirty and slimy things on me, the sweat... I don't like it!" said Heechul. "I'm going!"

"But do they mind?"

"She doesn't seem to." Each replied.

"So its decided then? All of you are coming?" said Kibum.

"Yes." They replied.

Kibum turned to Amy and smiled.

"Sure... if that's okay with you." he replied.

"Sure!" she smiled happily.

Julia tugged Amy's arm and pulled her away, her expression incredulous. "Amy, you know, I've always respected your sensitive and caring disposition but this is going a bit too far! You could be endangering our lives!"

"Yea!" said Mary.

"Yea I know." Amy said. "But my instincts won't let me leave them alone like that... each of them seem like nice guys, imagine if that was us!"

"I know where your getting at Amy but..." said Julia. "I'm sorry... if that's what you're going to do, get them inside our house, and then you can count me out and anymore than that, forever."

"Same here." Said arena.

"Same here." Said Victoria.

Mary looked me in the eyes. "Same here."

Amy's eyes widened upon realisation of what they was saying. "I'm sorry, but I can't... they've got no home, we've actually got a home, they are strangers, and you guys are my best friends... I just..." She shook her head. "I guess this means we're over?"

"Yes." Each of them replied and Mary nodded her head. "Sorry... Amy"

"Goodbye guys." Amy said, and they turned around and began to walk away and she did too but then they looked back at her and they realised that it was not only like they were walking away from their best friend and the friendship they shared with each other, but it anything was to happen to her, how could they live with their themselves?

"Wait Amy." Said Mary and the others looked at her. "I'd rather something bad happen to me as well; I want to protect her like she protects me, she's my best friend guys, I can't let her just slip away."

"What are you doing Mary?" said arena.

"You heard me." Said Mary. "Goodbye guys, you are on your own. It was nice knowing you."

Julia walked with Mary. "Sorry guys. I'm not going back to where I once lived. Even for a day."

And the others followed too.

Upon taking them into their home they lead them in, Julia, Victoria and arena volunteered to stay outside and Mary would've too if Amy wasn't going inside and argued with the fact but something about them just told her 'there's nothing to be afraid of' and she followed that instinct inside the house.

After each had showered and dressed into Amy's brothers clothes, Amy waited outside, and offered them food inside the kitchen, a heap of it which she specifically prepared, most of them included snacks and fruits and cold drinks, which she could tell be their expression was at that point, heavenly. The last to shower was the same boy that gripped her arm and had this boyish charm about him and these lips that made the girls just want to chew them, if that isn't creepy enough. the others were already at the kitchen conversing in English with great felicity and advised Amy to join them, but she refused out of thoughts of integrity and sat on her sofa alone as they ate, she was convinced already that they were nice guys and she knew at least that they had a warm personality, not to mention bubbly and she couldn't help that tingling happy feeling she would get when helping others in need, it was just one of her natural dispositions which sometimes came off as annoying which she didn't mind and couldn't control its urges.

when the last door opened, the boy that grippe her arm came out, she had leant each of them her brothers clothes that he'd managed to leave and was to throw out as residue but Amy thought I'd be nice to give them to charity, which she never found the time to do but was in soon to.

as soon as the boy, a towel around his neck, his body smelling of my brothers perfume, not that I say irresistible to women, his wet hair over hi eyes that only one eye was left visible and his composed expression read nothing, I forced myself to look away.

"I guess I didn't get to introduce myself properly." he said. "I'm sungmin."

"Hey." Amy replied. "And I'm Amy.

There was a pause.

"thanks." he said. "You saved our lives."

"Um... no problem." Amy replied nervously.

"I just want you to know that... you must have a lot of heart to actually allow seven complete strangers into your home, male and let hem eat all your food." he said and Amy smiled, forcing herself to look at him. His unshaven face showed his beautiful features and it was a wonder that he was inside her very own home. when she first saw him, she couldn't see their beauty, but now that she was actually able to, she still felt the very same in attitude towards him, but the fact that her theory that boys this beautiful left out on the streets beside a rubbish dump was an impossibility was in fact, today, proven false.

"Would you mind if we can we use your phone to call home?" he asked. "In Korea?"

"Sure." Amy said and went to get up and as she walked passed him grabbed her arm.

"I could thank you a thousand times and it still wouldn't be enough." he said and she felt invincible. "If there's anything I can do for you, let me no. anything you wanna ask?"

She nodded. "Why... how did you end up like that I a town like this?"

"What town?" he asked and titled his head.

"This perfect town, action like this never happens its just... really rare... and in honesty, really odd." she replied.

"Yea well..." he said. "I'll explain it to you after we make that phone call, I don't want to reveal the whole reasons do I? It'll spoil the fun" he paused. "You saved our lives."

She looked at the floor. "I didn't. Anyway, its the least I could do to a... fellow human being such as myself."

He laughed and reached out his hand and placed her face up from the ground. "Don't look down so much..." and her eyes connected to his and she shook her head in response."You got something over there..." and he took a rice grain from her hair and pushed her fringe aside. "Just a bit of rice." He said smiling.

She turned away. "Um sorry."

"There's no need to apologise for a grain of rice." He said, chuckling.

"Hey, how about I make you that phone call?" She asked and walked to get a home phone.

"Hey guys!" he called. "We're calling sm entertainment studio!"

From these words they hurried into the room excitedly, jumping enthusiastically, hang geng ran to Amy and carried her on his shoulder, twirling her around in circles as she screamed for him to let go and in which he didn't understand. When Kibum screamed at him too he did and let her down and she laughed. It was then she knew, they sure did miss home.

"You guys ready?" said sungmin and when they all replied 'yes!" he dialled numbers and he waited.

"Is it ringing?" said donghae eagerly.

"Yea..." he said. "What?" he said pulling the phone away from his ear.

"What's wrong sungmin?" he replied. "Are they not picking up?"

"No... It just that it was ringing then... then the phone stopped ringing."

"Call again." Suggested Siwon and he did, only for the same response.

"Do you have a mobile?" said kangin.

"No..." Amy said. "What's a mobile?"

"Are you kidding me?" they said, their mouths literally gapping as they yelled like rambunctious monkeys out of disbelief.

"Yea... seriously what is it?" Amy said and they began searching their pockets.

"admit." They said. "I don't have mine."

"anyway." Said heechul. "its this square thing, that works like a home phone but you get to carry it around and do more stuff with it."

"oh..." Amy said. "we don't have them here."

"why not?" said Siwon eagerly.

"um... I don't know, we don't usually need to carry them around, we're really organised here... and we never forget to tell anyone anything, and also nothing bad happens her so we don't need to them for emergenices. Well that's here... everyone here... we're different, but we still don't need them. We're just in our own little groups."

"oh..." they said. "wow. I NEED TO GET OUT OF HERE!"

"its okay its okay." She assured. "It's probably some difficulties, we'll ask the neighbour next door. He's probably the once nice neighbour around the area we live. So it'll be okay."

And they walked outside and visited the next door neighbour.

"so does he live alone?" asked ryewook.

"yea. He does." Amy said. "all the neighbours beside him are really scary, so I wouldn't really ask them anything if I still wanted to live."

She knocked on their door.

"hello Mr smith." Said Amy. "um, can I just ask if your phone is working?"

"I'll check." he said and he grabbed his phone and dialled. "oh no... sorry."

"oh, its okay thanks." She replied and walked out.

"so what are we going to do?" said heechul.

"um, I'll go check the phone maybe we can fix it?" Amy said doubtfully. "worth trying."

Amy went over to her backyard where her other friends were and opened the box with the phone cords.

"that's funny..." Amy said. "the cords have been pulled off."

"what?" they said.

"that couldn't have been a coincidence. JULIA!" Amy called and she came over.

"what do you think?" Amy asked.

"defiantly didn't just happen by itself, all I know." And she looked at her.

"what are you trying to hint at?" Amy asked and we both knew what this meant.

"it might've been an accident." Amy said.

"I assume, we tell the neighbours... 'neighbour' if that too happened to them." She said and they walked back.

"um sorry Mr. smith." Amy asked. "but are the plugs of your home phone disconnected?"

"I'll check." He said and we waited a few minutes.

"how can we be so sure?" Amy asked.

"I'm pretty sure it was an accident." They said. "maybe a prank."

"you don't understand." Amy said. "things like this DON'T just happen in the town of mertan... especially things like these..."

There was a soft 'crunching' crack sound which others such as Mary heard it.

"what was that?" said Mary, alert.

"probably there breaking the phones or something." Said arena.

"I guess its back in the old dumpster for us." The group of boys said.

Amys friends gave looks to her that showed me they were willing to welcome them for more longer (mainly because they were good looking, so they seemed more trustworthy to the four other girls).

"how about you guys stay with us? Until you get to call back home." Amy suggested.

They looked at each other and smiled at Amy.

"I think we'd like that."
