As soon as he heard those words, Donghae jumped out of his chair to hug his wife, he was so excited and happy that he wasn't even able to get out a coherent sentence. The hug lasted for a few minutes until Donghae stopped it with a worried face.
"Sweetie, are you okay with us having a baby?"
"Well if I wasn't, I wouldn't have been taking pre-natal supplements since our second anniversary."
"Huh? Why didn't you tell me about this?"
"Well I wanted to make it a surprise, and I didn't want you to be disappointed each month if I don't get pregnant fast since I kind of had a hard time doing that." He hugged her once again and led her to the couch.
"Wow! You can't even believe how excited I am right now. How ... When did you change your mind?" The endorphin rush was disabling him from being the outspoken person he usually is, instead you have an excited stuttering future father .
"I started being more and more jealous each time I see people with their kids and we don't have any, and I read in a book that savoring the first two years of marriage then having kids is good for the longevity of the relationship."
"And our baby will be here right during the opening of our first joint project!" he excitedly added.
"We need to tell everyone, our parents are finally going to get off our backs for children."
"Let's invite them for dinner and we'll tell them then. At least with a grandson or granddaughter in tow, my father won't be so mad that I'll stop working in five months."
"Are you sure about that? You love your work."
"But I love our baby even more" she sweetly responded which brought tears to both their eyes.
"We're really going to be parents!" he confirmed again with a hoarse voice, he really couldn't believe how well everything was going for him.
"Yes we are" Sooyeon couldn't help but choke on her tears. Two years ago, she probably wouldn't be this happy to be welcoming a baby in their family. Sure they're cute, but the pregnancy will get her fat and she won't fit in her clothes anymore. Babies also cry really loudly at night which will deprive her of her beloved sleep, and there's just so much responsibility that is so hard to take. But now, she's more than happy to get fat, to lose sleep, to be tired all the time, just for a baby.
Their family were just as happy to hear the news, congratulations and hugs were exchanged between everyone, even little Jung Sejoon -Yunho and Boa's son- was happy to finally get someone to play with, although with the age difference, he'll probably use his cousin as a toy instead of playing with toys together.
That night, the whole conversation was about the baby, which gender they'd prefer, ideas for names, doctor appointments ...
Two weeks later, they finally went to the OB-GYN. Donghae's excitement once again was that of a 5 year old, he couldn't wait to see their baby and even hear the heartbeats of living being THEY made. The visit couldn't be made sooner since the baby was too young and Sooyeon already did the important blood tests when she found out she was pregnant.
Now, at 12 weeks, she was positioned on the doctor's fauteuil with her husband holding her hand when the doctor told them they'll start.
Their eyes went directly to the screen, after searching for a few seconds, the doctor was finally able to show them the baby. It was so small, cradled in Sooyeon's womb. The doctor started pointing out the baby's members, his arms, and legs, and his tiny torso, gaining words of amazement from the future parents, but as soon as the heartbeats were heard, they both got quiet.
Sooyeon -who was already on an emotional roller coaster during this first trimester- started crying at the touching moment, even Donghae had a hard time containing his tears.
The doctor who was used to scenes like this, left them alone for a moment to check out the blood results. After they whipped Sooyeon's tears and were a bit calmer, the couple joined the doctor who had a smile on her face.
"So, how's everything's going?" Donghae finally asked.
"For now it's good, but as you know, Sooyeon has PCOS so you have to be very careful with what you do and what you eat"
Sooyeon didn't want to slump the mood on the first day of the announcement, but she eventually told her husband why it took her over four months to get pregnant even with the help of fertilizing medicine. Polycystic ovary syndrome usually made women infertile, thankfully for her, she was part of the small percentage who had the syndrome but still were able to conceive, however her condition made her a little bit more fragile to miscarriage, and they didn't even want to think about what they'll do if something horrible like that happens.
"Just keep a good diet, rest enough, don't overwork yourself. Slight abdominal pains, dizziness and morning sickness are normal during the first trimester, but if it's too sever contact me immediately." Sooyeon could only nod at her doctor's advice.
Ten minutes later, they were finally able to leave. Donghae caressed her hand and kissed her temple.
"Don't worry, everything is going to be just fine." He didn't want her to stress about, although he was secretly just as stressed about the issue as she is, if not more.
"Let's go shopping, my clothes are getting tighter by the day and I want to give this cupcake lots of space to grow." Sooyeon always referred to their baby by cute nicknames like this. She or He weren't possible since the gender was still unknown, It was not human, so she preferred calling the baby "muffin" , "smurf", "pokemon" , "little one" or even "shrink" since their little one worked even better than a psychologist for her, whenever she felt sad, she would retort to talking to her tummy and she would instantly feel happy again.
Donghae drove to the nearest mall, and what was supposed to be a shopping session for her turned into baby shopping. The couple just couldn't keep their hands off all the cute baby stuff, they just had to buy something, to make this seem more real, even more real than the cd in her bag with the recording of their baby's heartbeats.
So they both gender neutral clothes and toys.
On their way back, Sooyeon couldn't help but think about the risk of miscarriage and her hands instantly covered her stomach as if protecting the baby from any harm.
"Daddy and I may want you to get here really fast, but take your time to grow healthily sweetheart. We love you."
"I want to feel our baby's kicks and know the gender when is that going to happen?" Donghae excitedly asked as he sensed the mood turning grim.
Sooyeon immediately fetched her "pregnancy guide" book out of her bag to look out that information.
"Around 16 weeks, that's a lot to wait" she whined.
"I can't believe we're having a baby when you still whine like one"
"You whine too..."
"I don't"
"You do"
"No"
"Yes"
And so they bickered until they got home.
