Chapter 5
Broken, Unbroken [Hiatus]LEETEUK POV:
"You must not breathe a word of this to anyone, understand? Because if anyone finds out about her, not only will we get in deep trouble, but she'll be forced to leave... and she has nowhere else to go," I said, facing everyone before we headed home from rehearsal.
"Especially not a word to our managers, or anyone at SM, alright?" Siwon added.
"Nae," everyone replied.
Feeling reassured, I packed up my things and we all headed home. Hopefully Heechul was alright. He hardly ever left rehearsal early. Maybe I should check up on him... I took out my cellphone and dialed his number. It rang a few times before his wary voice answered,
"Yoboseyo?"
"Heechul-ah?" I asked, worried by his tone. "Is everything alright? I was worried when you left early." He sighed.
"It's nothing, Jungsu-hyung. I was just tired. I haven't gotten much sleep lately," he replied.
"Is it anything that you want to talk about?" I asked him gently. "If you want, I'll stop by."
"...Araso," he replied hesitantly.
"Okay, I'll be there in a few minutes." I hung up.
I was surprised to see Hyun-woo standing outside Heechul's dorm, a plastic bag in his hand and accompanied by a doctor. He looked up as I approached.
"Annyeong-haseyo." The three of us greeted each other with a bow.
"Leeteuk-shi, you remember Dr. Hwang? He was the doctor in charge of Mei Ling while at the hospital," Hyun-woo asked, gesturing to the person beside him whom I instantly recognized.
"Nae," I replied as I gave another polite bow. "Are you here to check up on her?"
"Yes, and to drop off some things for her," Hyun-woo answered, holding up the bag. "Just some necessities."
The door suddenly opened and Heechul greeted us. He seemed a bit surprised to see Hyun-woo and Dr. Hwang, but politely invited them in anyways.
"Kamsamnida," Hyun-woo said as we entered the dorm. "We'll just check up on Mei Ling." Heechul nodded and gestured to her door. He then went to the kitchen and I followed.
"So, is there anything bothering you?" I asked as he poured us both a cup of coffee. He silently sat down across from me and fiddled with his cup before breathing a word; but when he spoke, his voice did not depict any of the usual Kim Heechul confidence he always had.
"Hyung... I'm falling apart..."
MEI LING POV:
I whimpered again as the memory continued to taunt me, but it was interrupted by a knock on my door.
"Mei Ling? Are you okay?" Hyun-woo's voice asked from the other side of the wood. "Can I come in? I've brought Dr. Hwang with me."
"O-okay..." I replied, my head pounding. The door clicked open.
"Mei Ling?" In a moment, they were both beside me. "What's wrong?"
"Heechul-shi's cat... it brought a painful recall of some memories..." I answered almost inaudibly.
"You remembered something?" Hyun-woo asked, his eyes wide with hope.
"It wasn't anything important," I said. "They were just fragments of a cat attacking me."
"Nothing important?" Hyun-woo repeated in disbelief. "This is a very good sign! Your memories are coming back! It is slow, but a good start!" He spoke to Dr. Hwang in Korean, most likely translating what he had just found out. He turned back to me, smiling widely. "Dr. Hwang says that you are recovering much faster than he expected. He reckons that you'll have your memory back within a few months at the latest. In the meantime, here are some more things you might need and Dr. Hwang just has to check on how your bones are mending." I merely nodded and extended my left arm first. As the doctor was working, my mind began to wander.
"Hyun-woo-shi," I said. "Why did it hurt so much when the memories came back?"
"I don't know, to be honest," he replied. "My guess would be that your mind is having trouble processing something that it thinks has not happened, yet it has. I would be confused, too, if I were it." He chuckled.
"Will it happen everytime I regain something?" I asked nervously, not wanting to go through that again. He pondered the thought.
"If you see something that may probe at a lost memory, like the cat, it's possible that it may happen again, but I don't think it should be the normal," he finally said. I shifted uncomfortably. His answer did not reassure me the least bit.
