Chapter Sixty-Nine

Drenched

"We'll meet them in the morning to go have breakfast together. They’re just on the other wing of the house, they could even hear us talk if they wanted," Chorong told Bomi, excitedly caressing her fiancée's back. After the whole day of activities, both girls were tired and couldn't bear any more action; they just wanted time for themselves, relaxing time.

"Unnie, I think I'm going to go to bed now." Bomi didn't look too bright.

"Are you okay?" Chorong asked, full of concern. Bomi hadn't been having such a good time lately, health-speaking.

"It's fine." Bomi tried to smile while caressing her fiancée's hand between hers. "I have just been feeling extremely tired today and I'd like to get some rest."

Chorong nodded, her forehead still wrinkled in a concerned way. She pulled Bomi close and kissed her cheek softly; the other girl could feel her smiling on her skin.

"I'll be right there."

Bomi made an affirmative noise in response and smiled at her unnie before going to bed. Chorong started cleaning up the kitchen, still a mess from their dinner that night. She could feel the tiredness too, but she hadn't wanted to ask Bomi to make such an effort and help her. The younger girl had been looking extremely tired lately, and Chorong felt this urge in her to protect her of everything, as much as she could.

When Chorong finished putting everything in order, she decided to go to bed as well. She walked down the yellow-painted corridor, too bright for that time at night, looking at the couple of pictures they had hung there. There was one of all Apink from back when they debuted, and then there was another of Chorong and Bomi where the older girl was laying her head down on her girlfriend’s shoulder, their backs against the mirror in the practice room. You could see Eunji taking the picture, with Naeun by her side, paying more attention to the photographer than the object of the picture. The look on Naeun’s face made Chorong smile, remembering the situation.

When she entered their room, Bomi was completely asleep on the bed covers. Chorong sighed and shook her head, smiling.

"Ah, Bomi-ah…" She managed to cover the younger girl with the sheets and helped her find a comfortable position on the pillow, but the sleeping Bomi still managed to groan in complain when Chorong moved her.

Chorong got then ready to go to bed, brushed her teeth and tied her hair in a loose braid. She pulled the covers over her legs and turned to look at the sleeping Bomi beside her.

"I love you, Bomi-ah," she muttered quietly, kissing her girlfriend softly. She thought of how they hadn’t said a proper goodbye that night, like they had started to do lately, but she caressed Bomi’s cheek, sending her worries away. It was only once. "I’ll see you in the morning."

                                                                                                                                                              ~

The sun came up like it was a normal day. The light was as bright as every day, not showing any signs of what was about to come.

When Chorong woke up, she yawned and turned around to look at Bomi. Her eyes hurt because of the sudden brightness, and she had to blink several times before she got adjusted to the light.

"Bomi-ah?" Her voice sounded hoarse because of the amount of sleep she had got. "Are you awake?"

She got no response from the younger girl, who was still fast asleep. Chorong went to the bathroom and washed her face, looking at her slightly swollen face. It was a good sign, though, since it meant she had gotten enough sleep, and that was something she would never get used to.

"Bomi-ah?" Chorong looked at Bomi from her position at the bathroom’s door. Bomi didn’t even move, she didn’t react to the sound, and something twisted inside Chorong.

"Bomi!" She was suddenly completely awake, and she ran towards the bed, turning Bomi completely until her back was against the covers. "Bomi-ah?"

Chorong blinked fast a couple of times and then she suddenly felt a shiver run against her spine. She shook Bomi’s shoulders, gently at first. Her breathing started to falter, and only when she touched her cheek to get her hair out of the way she did realize her whole face was wet with tears.

Her voice had now turned into full high-pitched screams, getting out from the deepest part of her soul. She was shaking her head in denial while crying, not even realizing that she was screaming her lungs out.

The door slammed open when she ran out of breath, falling down on the bed. She didn’t release Bomi’s body, though; she had her shoulders firmly grabbed in her petite hands, and there was nothing that could get them apart.

                                                                                                                                                              ~

Naeun was lying on Eunji’s knees, the two girls silently still waking up. Eunji was looking at the younger girl calmly, many thoughts going on through her confused mind. She was about to say something out loud when they both heard the earth-shattering scream. Eunji’s blood froze. Her heart stopped. While Naeun ran out of their room as fast as possible, worried for who she knew was Chorong, Eunji was completely shocked and frozen in place. She was staring at a minuscule spot on the orange wall that suddenly had gotten all her attention. Eunji knew what had to have happened.

Eunji had started to live with her heart barely working properly; every moment of every day ready to stop itself when she got the news. Because she had known it was coming, no matter how much Bomi wanted to lie to herself. And Chorong’s scream… Eunji had never heard something like that. She had never heard a sound so full of desperation, so full of meaning, of madness, of love. It was a mixture of everything Chorong felt when she was with Bomi and the feeling of everything she had been left with. Overall, it sounded like someone had just taken Chorong’s half.

Eunji, the Eunji who never shed a tear, started sobbing suddenly. She muffled her loud sobs with Naeun’s pillow and she screamed too. She got everything out with that scream. She tried to express how anyone would feel if everything had been taken away from them. It was a scream of fear.

                                                                                                                                                              ~

"Unnie!!" Hayoung screamed too as soon as she entered the room; she fell onto the ground before even getting to the bed. Namjoo covered her head in horror, tears streaking down her cheeks.

Chorong hugged Bomi’s body even tighter with her arms, still shaking her and screaming her name with the little energy she had left. She felt like blacking out, but there was no way she was abandoning Bomi; there was no way she was releasing her body and pulling apart.

Naeun came in to find them all broken. Tears were making a way down her face as soon as she saw Chorong’s face filled with fear. She kneeled down next to Namjoo and Hayoung, who were clinging to each other, and hugged them quietly.

Chorong, on the other hand, was getting into a state of complete hysteria, her faltering breath combined with her unstoppable sobs and the muffled screams couldn’t even emit anymore. When Eunji walked in, calmly looking around and swallowing before speaking, Chorong raised her face from Bomi’s hair to look at her friend.

Eunji walked towards Chorong, one step at a time, taking deep breaths. Chorong’s throat emitted all sorts of dolphin-like screams that made no one laugh this time. Three girls on the floor, another hysterical who seemed like she was going to pass out any moment, and then there was Eunji, pretending to be all composed while sitting in the bed next to Chorong. Using all her strength, Eunji managed to make Chorong release Bomi’s body, even though the older girl was fighting with all the energy she had left in her petite body. Eunji pulled Chorong against her, surrounding her with her arms, no matter how much did the older girl fight. She was kicking the air, pushing Eunji with all her strength while sobbing uncontrollably.

After a few minutes of fight, Eunji won and managed to calm Chorong down. The older girl crumbled into her friend’s arms, tears falling down again but controlling her breath and sobs this time. Eunji hugged her tightly, burying her head in her unnie’s shoulder so she wouldn’t see her cry. The two girls stayed like that for a long time, silently crying their eyes out while time seemed to have stopped around them. Like a hurricane had come and swept everything away, they seemed to be left with nothing that could make their life compasses find their north again.

Chapter 70: This has taken me a long time to read, maybe around the same amount of time to read as you did writing it at the time, which, first of all, is impressive you wrote all this in that time.. a story that was well-planned and completed, and with impactful themes of love, grief, loss. It's heavy, so heavy with emotion, and the characters are authentic to their personalities and why they do what they do and how they think in this situation.. It's a story as deep as this that makes me amazed and grateful for the kind of writing contributed to here with my favourite girls, something this serious and profound. It's also taken me this long to read because it would surely have me in tears and my heart can only take so much.

You knew what you were writing and didn't shy away from the reality, the slow pain of this journey, but you were also able to paint a wonderful love story throughout it. From the past and how Chorong and Bomi took a chance together, to their struggles in this, their underlying pains and sadness, but even so, there's never a moment to doubt their love for each other and how strong it stays ;_; thank you for writing this piece

Chapter 70: I’ve just re-read this fic all over again, and for the first time, I cried the last three chapters, even though I knew how it’s going to end. This story brought me so much memories and feelings, as someone who lost a dear person for cancer, knowing the ending broke me. I get why Bomi wrote the letters though, it’s a deep and meaningful sign of goodbye. We never fully heal, but it gets manageable somehow. Thank you for this fanfic!

Chapter 70: This is really one of the best that I've read so far.. very well-developed plot with extremely vivid descriptions of the emotions.. most of all, it was beautiful reading of friendship, love and hardship that one can only fathom of, something that perhaps many of us, deep down, hope to have the luck of experiencing in our lifetime..

Thanks for sharing this with us!

Damn i know its a fanfic but it feels so real i remembered the time my father died and i tried to CPR him while my mom is hysterically bawling near me so i can relate to their reactions :(. If this will become a live drama seriously this will be a hit. One thing i want to know is what are the contents of the letters for the other members? it would be nice to have them read their letters as well but anyways good job on this fanfic author-nim.

Chapter 70: That was a rollercoaster ride of emotions I had felt. Not only did I learn from the story, but it also made 'feel' things that I didn't know I can. Wow. This story, I can tell, made a lasting impression in my heart. I will cherish what I learned here well. Thank you for this story. :)
