Chapter Forty-Seven

Drenched

“Unnie? What’s wrong?” A sleepy Naeun was rubbing her eyes while talking to Eunji. She had heard the older girl talk on the phone to someone, but it was too late at night for that to be normal.

“Bomi-ah called me,” Eunji said. “They’re drunk. They’re freaking crazy. We need to go get them before they do something serious.”

Naeun just arched an eyebrow before nodding and getting up from the bed, moving the sheets with her. When Eunji exclaimed in surprise, she turned around and saw the older girl’s body that had been hidden under those same sheets.

“Oops.” She smiled, and Eunji blushed. Naeun blushed back; none of them used to that kind of relationship between them.

They locked their gazes for a while and then Eunji sat up on the bed so she was closer to Naeun. Eunji moved forward, the space between them smaller and smaller until the girl brought their lips together. This time, it wasn’t as frantic and passionate as the kisses they had shared before; this was soft and tender and short. After a few seconds, it was Naeun who broke it.

“Let’s get going,” Naeun said with a small smile that shifted to a worried frown. “I don’t really want to be responsible for their drunken actions. And we both know they aren’t good drunks.”

When the two girls reached the restaurant they stayed inside Eunji’s car until they could get a hold of the situation. They were silently staring at the quiet street where no soul could be seen when a scream pierced the air.

The next thing they saw was Namjoo, who carried a bucket full of water which kept overflowing, running out of the restaurant while shouting something undecipherable, followed by Bomi and Chorong, who were holding hands. Chorong was laughing non-stop, her head tilted back in a huge grin and tears in her eyes. Bomi smiled at her and shouted something towards the restaurant, and pulled Chorong with her when she followed Namjoo to the corner where they saw Eunji’s car.

But this wasn’t it. The next thing that happened was a triumphant Hayoung escaping the restaurant with a couple of waiters behind her. It wasn’t enough that she was laughing hysterically and shouting all sorts of things at them. The huge point of her person at the moment was the huge lobster she was holding between her hands. The animal was obviously alive, since it kept moving its antennas and legs, trying to escape from Hayoung’s tight grip.

Naeun looked at Eunji in that moment, her face full of confusion but mostly astonishment. This was probably the weirdest thing she’d experienced. She was still shocked when she heard a knock in her window.

“Unnie! Hurry up, open!” Namjoo shouted at her frantically.

Naeun’s shock only lasted for a couple of seconds, until Eunji reacted first and elbowed her on the side. Namjoo crawled into the back seat, followed by Chorong and Bomi who seemed to be finishing a marathon, panting heavily.

Hayoung was still running away from the waiters, so Eunji the engine while Bomi kept the door open so the maknae could jump in at any second. When she did so, she slammed the door shut and shouted for Eunji to drive away.

“Come on, unnie! Faster!” When they lost the still confused and mad waiters, Hayoung turned to Namjoo. “Unnie, do we have enough water for her?”

Namjoo nodded, giving her the bucket. Chorong, who was sitting on Bomi’s lap because of the obvious lack of space, complained loudly when the cold water spilled on her bare legs.

“Her? How is it a her?” Naeun asked, but Eunji elbowed her once again, so she stayed quiet. The best thing to do was follow the drunk girls’ line of thought, so she’d better not ask any more questions, even if their actions were complete nonsense.

“Of course it’s a her!” Hayoung exclaimed, lifting the lobster so Naeun could see it on the inside mirror. “Look at her!”

Naeun nodded slowly but said nothing.

“Eunji-ah, drive towards Incheon Airport and we’ll then go straight to the sea.” It was Chorong who gave indications, and Eunji could do nothing but sigh in defeat and take the girls were they wanted.

They reached the beach after leaving the highway, the sky becoming shades of purple and pink while the sun was getting ready to show its presence.

“Let’s get her to the water!” Hayoung was the first one to jump out of the car, leaving the door open on her run towards the morning sea. Namjoo followed soon after, in charge of carrying the bucket of water with the so-called lobster.

Naeun took a deep breath and followed her friends outside after smiling at Eunji, and the older girl nodded in response. Eunji then turned around after stopping the car completely at a safe spot and turned around, watching her two sleeping unnies in the back. Chorong and Bomi had been capable to fall asleep in the middle of all that activity. Chorong, who was obviously the member who was the least used to being drunk, had fallen asleep due to her alcoholic state in Bomi’s arms, and the younger girl had let her head rest against Chorong’s, the two girls connected in a tight embrace while sitting in the car. Oh, how uncomfortable must Hayoung and Namjoo have been… even if they were busy with the famous lobster.

Eunji smiled softly and then left them in the car, locked from the inside so they could get out when they woke up. She then started walking towards the seaside, where the other members were looking into the bucket and analyzing the situation.

“I think we should just set her free,” Eunji laughed slightly at the continuous use of the word “her” by Hayoung, and she couldn’t help but crack out laughing when she realized how crazy this had all become since they drank. Because the car had ended up smelling so much like soju that Eunji wasn’t sure if she could ever get rid of it.

“You throw her,” said Namjoo, sitting on the sand due to her dizziness. Naeun shook her head and sat next to the girl, laying a hand on Namjoo’s shoulder.

Hayoung smiled and grabbed the lobster by its antennas, pulling her upwards. The animal started to move, looking for release. Hayoung suddenly burst out laughing and the lobster almost escaped her grip, and Naeun looked at her with a confused smile. It was funny indeed, but it was also worrying her to see her friends in that state of drunkenness.

“Come on, Hayoung-ah!” Namjoo yawned.

“But… where’s Bomi-unnie?” Hayoung looked around. “And Chorong-unnie?”

“They fell asleep,” Eunji answered with a shrug. “I left them in the car.”

In that same moment Bomi appeared in between the sand dunes while holding Chorong’s hand. The older girl had her other hand in her forehead, her eyes slightly closed because of the dizziness she seemed to be feeling. Yes, Chorong was indeed the worst drunk.

“Here we are,” Bomi spoke with a huge grin, and helped Chorong to sit in the sand beside Naeun. The younger girl looked at her leader with shock, but then sighed and pushed her bangs out of her eyes so she would see Chorong’s face.

- Unnie… Are you okay?” Chorong smiled in reply, but Naeun’s worries didn’t disappear. Why did she have to be the responsible one?

“Unnie, let’s throw her,” Hayoung told Bomi, lifting the lobster even higher in the air.

“Careful! Don’t you drop it!” Bomi sounded alarmed by Hayoung’s careless movement.

“It’s a her!” Now Hayoung looked outraged because Bomi seemed to have forgotten the gender of their lobster. Chorong burst out laughing, surprising Naeun and Namjoo who were sitting near her, and she just couldn’t hold her laugh.

A few seconds later, the lobster was swimming in the salty water of the ocean. Hayoung was jumping around making short cries of joy, and the other members couldn’t help but giggle in amusement. Drunk Hayoung was funny to watch.

Namjoo was yawning loudly, and the girls turned around to stare at her. She was half-asleep on Naeun’s shoulder, and Chorong was rubbing her eyes in tiredness. Bomi sat down on the sand, looked around and immediately lie down, her eyes staring at the night sky. It was late at night, a few hours before sunrise, and plenty of things had happened since they drank those shots of soju.

“I’m so tired right now…” Hayoung decided to lie down as well.

“Wait, let’s get you all home.” But Eunji’s words were late, since Chorong was already in deep sleep. Eunji sighed before continuing. “Let’s rest for a while and then we’ll head home. The effects of alcohol must be gone when the sun rises; I hope so.”

Bomi stood up to approach Naeun and grinned at her, to which the girl could do nothing but shake her head in disagreement. Bomi was lying down right over there when Chorong shifted in her sleep and fell on Bomi’s stomach, her cheek against the thin cloth that covered Bomi’s abs. Naeun, with only Namjoo on her shoulder now, moved the younger girl slower so she was lying with her back against the sand, and then she stood up and walked away. Hayoung had fallen literally on the dune that was the closest to the water, and she was snoring softly already. Naeun rolled her eyes at that when she saw Eunji, but the older girl just shrugged.

“Let’s go somewhere further, girlfriend,” Naeun smiled widely at the word. “We should let them rest for a while.”

Chapter 70: This has taken me a long time to read, maybe around the same amount of time to read as you did writing it at the time, which, first of all, is impressive you wrote all this in that time.. a story that was well-planned and completed, and with impactful themes of love, grief, loss. It's heavy, so heavy with emotion, and the characters are authentic to their personalities and why they do what they do and how they think in this situation.. It's a story as deep as this that makes me amazed and grateful for the kind of writing contributed to here with my favourite girls, something this serious and profound. It's also taken me this long to read because it would surely have me in tears and my heart can only take so much.

You knew what you were writing and didn't shy away from the reality, the slow pain of this journey, but you were also able to paint a wonderful love story throughout it. From the past and how Chorong and Bomi took a chance together, to their struggles in this, their underlying pains and sadness, but even so, there's never a moment to doubt their love for each other and how strong it stays ;_; thank you for writing this piece

Chapter 70: I’ve just re-read this fic all over again, and for the first time, I cried the last three chapters, even though I knew how it’s going to end. This story brought me so much memories and feelings, as someone who lost a dear person for cancer, knowing the ending broke me. I get why Bomi wrote the letters though, it’s a deep and meaningful sign of goodbye. We never fully heal, but it gets manageable somehow. Thank you for this fanfic!

Chapter 70: This is really one of the best that I've read so far.. very well-developed plot with extremely vivid descriptions of the emotions.. most of all, it was beautiful reading of friendship, love and hardship that one can only fathom of, something that perhaps many of us, deep down, hope to have the luck of experiencing in our lifetime..

Thanks for sharing this with us!

Damn i know its a fanfic but it feels so real i remembered the time my father died and i tried to CPR him while my mom is hysterically bawling near me so i can relate to their reactions :(. If this will become a live drama seriously this will be a hit. One thing i want to know is what are the contents of the letters for the other members? it would be nice to have them read their letters as well but anyways good job on this fanfic author-nim.

Chapter 70: That was a rollercoaster ride of emotions I had felt. Not only did I learn from the story, but it also made 'feel' things that I didn't know I can. Wow. This story, I can tell, made a lasting impression in my heart. I will cherish what I learned here well. Thank you for this story. :)
