Like I Can
Myungyeol 50 Songfic Challenge
Sam Smith request for bannoffeeyeol.
"So I met this guy yesterday," Sungyeol says with a sip of his coffee.
Myungsoo sighs internally. "Yeah? How'd you meet?"
"I went out with Woohyun and his friends the other day, and they introduced me to him. He's really cute and smart and nice and he's not seeing anyone. Just what I'm looking for."
"Are you sure this won't be like last time? I don't want you getting hurt, Yeol."
"Myung, last time I didn't know what I was getting myself into. If I'd taken a little more time to get to know him, it wouldn't have happened."
He leans back from his laptop screen to see how his digital design project looks. "But you thought he was the one, and he totally went psycho on you."
"And now he's no longer allowed on the premises."
Unconvinced, Myungsoo stares at Sungyeol. "Just be careful."
"Jesus, Myung! I know, okay? We're going out tomorrow night, I'll tell you all about it. I'll be fine. "
At least that's what he says.
Sungyeol drops his things on their usual table in the library, completely ignoring the librarian's glare and jumping straight into conversation with Myungsoo.
"I can't stand him."
Myungsoo frowns. "Hi."
"I've said hi to you every single day I've seen you for the past three years. Now back to my point; I can't stand him."
"What's wrong with him?"
Sungyeol rolls his eyes just thinking about it. "So at first, he seemed like a nice guy. We went out to dinner, he paid like a gentleman, and he walked me home."
"So it's bad to be a nice guy?" He doesn't get it.
"It's not just that he's a nice guy! He's too nice."
"Buying you dinner and walking you home on a first date it him making a good impression."
He sighs like Myungsoo is the biggest idiot in the world. "I know that, Myung! But the entire time we were talking during dinner, he never disagreed with anything I said. So I started saying really dumb things to see if he would argue with me, but apparently he thinks that dog meat festivals and obliterating bumblebees would be good for the world."
"Guess he really likes you then."
"Well yeah, but what fun is it if he just sits there and agrees with everything I say? It's not healthy."
"If you say so." is all Myungsoo says, but he's actually extremely relieved that he won't have to worry about the other.
Sungyeol drops his head onto his arms. "I wish I could find the perfect guy. Sweet, cute, kind, caring, somebody who'd put up with me."
"Aren't I all those things?" he doesn't realize he's said it aloud until Sungyeol speaks again.
"Myung, we've already talked about this. I don't want to risk our friendship. How would I live without you to save me from all my screw-ups?" Sungyeol offers Myungsoo a smile that doesn't quite reach his eyes.
The latter's eyes widen and his face turns a shade redder. "Sorry." he mumbles.
"It's fine."
Three breakups, a make-up, and then one more breakup.
Myungsoo rubs circles on Sungyeol's back, murmuring comforting words while the other continues to shake with sobs. They're sitting on Sungyeol's bed, huddled close together as Myungsoo tries to make his best friend feel better so he can go heal his own heart from seeing this.
After he's calmed down and his tears have subsided to sniffles, Sungyeol looks down at his lap. "I don't get what I did wrong."
"You didn't do anything wrong. You've never done anything wrong." He means it.
"But it doesn't count if you say it! You're my best friend and you're supposed to make my exes seem like the worst creatures on Earth. I just don't get why I keep messing up. I want a guy who'll want me for me."
He should really think before speaking more often. "Then give me a chance."
Sungyeol looks up, staring directly into Myungsoo's eyes. "I don't want to talk about this right now."
"You always said that it wouldn't work out if we dated, but you never gave me a chance."
"Myung, I said I don't wanna talk about this."
"I've been by your side ever since we met on the first day of the second term of high school. I know all there is to know about you, and we always have something to talk about, and I know I fit your ideal type." Now that he's started, he can't seem to stop. "I get high nineties in all my classes, I always come over and cheer you up when you get sick, and I'm pretty sure you think I'm handsome because that one time when you got drunk you wouldn't stop talking about how hot I am. I've always accepted the good and the bad about you, too."
Sungyeol stays quiet.
"Please, just give me a chance. I-" he swallows thickly. "I can't get over you, Sungeol."
"When you confessed to me back in high school, I said I didn't want to ruin our friendship. But really, I just can't think of you in that way. I'm sorry, Myung."
After a few minutes of silence, Sungyeol finally says "I think you should leave."
Even though they never officially fought, neither Sungyeol or Myungsoo can bring themselves to see each other. They both last about a day before pulling out their phones, which beep almost simultaneously from the texts they send.
Myungsoo sits on a bench in the park. It's getting colder out, and he presses his hands deeper into the pockets of his coat. He stands up abruptly when the familiar tall figure arrives. They stand there for a while not saying anything, too lost in their own thoughts to speak.
"I'm sorry." Sungyeol murmurs.
"I'm sorry, too."
Sungyeol steps forward and hugs him tightly, and in that moment, Myungsoo lets himself believe that Sungyeol really does belong to him.
