TWENTY-FIVE: Suho's Birthday Surprise “Ireona...ya...ya, ireona...YA!” “Mmm, uh, huh?!” You muttered incoherently as you shot up from bed. You squinted your eyes and saw a shadow of someone standing beside your bed. You couldn’t make out who it was since you were not wearing your glasses. You fumbled for it but you couldn’t find it anywhere. “Aish. Here,” you heard the person say as he handed you something. His voice sounded very familiar. You hesitantly took it until you realized it was your glasses. You quickly put it on and stared him. “Lu Han?” You muttered in confusion. “Why are you –” “How long do you plan to sleep on my bed?” His hands were on his hips and he was holding a rolled piece of paper which he had used to shout into your ear earlier. “Your bed?” You muttered blankly. You glanced at the bed and at everything around you. That’s when you realized that you were not in your own room. “How did I get up here?” You murmured to yourself as you stared at the bed. The last thing you remembered was you took a rest for a while, but you were pretty sure you were on the floor then. You looked at Lu Han inquiringly. He just stood there wearing a somewhat unreadable expression. Then you remembered that he didn’t like anyone on his bed. “Oh, sorry!” You exclaimed and literally jumped out of bed. Your eyes widened when you saw the time. “Is it really ten in the morning?! Wait! So...did I sleep here?” “What do you think?” Was all Lu Han’s reply. Crap! “Where’s Lay and Sehun?” You asked. “Out,” he answered. “Well then I’ll go now. If you ever see them, tell them I’m sorry,” you said and dashed towards the door. You hastily put on your shoes and went out. Omo! How could I have spent the whole night in a room full of boys?! I even woke up late even though I was on someone else’s bed! A guy’s bed! You passed by some students as walked in the hallway. You bowed your head low and hopelessly tried to cover your face with your bangs since they were looking at you. Based on their expressions, you can already imagine what they were thinking and they must be wondering who you slept with. You quickly boarded the elevator as soon as it opened and to your dismay, there were more students there. Damn it! “She’s a new face around here. Whose girl do you think she is?” One guy whispered to his friend though you could hear every word he said. “I don’t know. But she looks familiar,” his friend whispered back. “Yeah...Hey, isn’t she the Class D?” “Wha – really?” The other guy exclaimed as the both of them tried to take a better look at you. To your relief, the elevator door opened and you dashed out, all the way to the girls’ dorm. You heaved a sigh as you waited in front of the elevator. You just hoped that no else saw you come out from the boys’ dorm or it’s gonna cause you more trouble. “Hmm? Lu Han?” A girl who was also waiting by the elevator said. “Where?!” Her friend asked. The girl started sniffing the air. “I can smell him. He’s very near.” Her friend started to look around for Lu Han. “I don’t see him anywhere. Aish! It must be your imagination. You have really gone crazy over him.” “I guess you’re right,” she chuckled. Wow. Monsters are cool. And creepy. Ding! You boarded the elevator and stood at the corner. “Sixth please,” the girl told you since you were near the buttons. “Oh, okay,” you muttered and pressed six. “Thanks. Hey, aren’t you the Class D?” She asked. “Uh, yeah,” you replied. “Oh,” she muttered as she and her friend studied you from head to foot, as though they were supposed to find something unusual about you. “Almost like a human,” she muttered and went back to chatting with her friend. You stared at the floor numbers uncomfortably. “Hey, I can really smell Lu Han,” the girl said after a while. “Are you sure? We’re in the elevator, and as you can see, he’s not here,” her friend laughed. “No, I can’t be mistaken. I know his scent,” she said firmly. “But how can he be here?” Her friend asked as she started sniffing around, until her eyes widened as it landed on you. You also stared at her in confusion then in shock, when you realized that Lu Han’s scent must have stuck on you since you slept on his bed. The girls were now staring at you with a mixture of shock, confusion and violence. Your heart pounded loudly in your chest as you can do nothing but just stare back at them. Ding! The door opened to your floor and you literally ran out. You gave a relieved sigh as you half-jogged to your room. Did they notice? You entered your room and Ji Min was sitting on her bed with her arms crossed, wearing a creepy expression. “Morning Ji Min-ah,” you greeted awkwardly. “When I said take your time, I didn’t actually mean you spend the entire night at their room, you naughty, naughty, girl,” she said, and grinned like a psycho. “It’s not what you think. I fell asleep,” you explained. “Aish! It’s okay to tell me the truth. No need to be shy about it,” she giggled, slapping your shoulder. “No, really. I fell asleep and I just found myself on Lu Han’s bed this morning.” “You slept with Lu Han?!” She gasped in a remarkably ecstatic tone. “No! He wasn’t there! I mean he was there but he wasn’t on his bed.” “I thought you said you were asleep. How would you know you weren’t sleeping together,” Ji Min prodded. “I was the only one on it when I woke up this morning, or rather when Lu Han woke me up,” you told her. “That’s a nice way to wake up,” she grinned. “Not really,” you answered sourly as you remembered how he shouted at you earlier. “I’m gonna go take a shower, then I’m going to the soccer team’s locker room to help them with the preparations. I’ll see you at lunch?” “Alright,” she answered. After thoroughly scrubbing Lu Han’s scent off, you headed right away to the locker room. You could already hear the boys’ loud voices even before you reached the door and there were shuffling and pounding noises inside. You knocked and everything turned unusually quiet. You waited for a while before somebody finally opened the door, though only by a small crack. “Oh, Joo Ri, it’s just you,” Baekhyun sighed. “Guys, it’s just Joo Ri,” Baekhyun yelled to the boys and the noises continued again. “Hi. I came to help. Sorry I’m late,” you told him. “She can’t, hyung!” You could hear Sehun’s voice from inside. “Yeah. Thanks Joo Ri, but we can’t let you,” Baekyun said. “Wae?” “It’s kind of messy in here,” Baekhyun said. “I don’t mind,” you told him. “Actually, not kind of, but really messy. How could we let a girl see this?” A topless Chanyeol appeared beside Baekhyun. I’ve already seen it, you thought slyly. “What are you doing? Go get a shirt!” Baekhyun yelled at Chanyeol as he pushed him away from view. “See you later Joo Ri,” Chanyeol said and disappeared inside. “You can go help D.O. and Lay-hyung. They’re at the cooking club’s kitchen,” Baekhyun told you. “Alright. But are you sure you guys don’t need my help?” “Yep!” “Okay. I’ll see you guys later,” you waved and headed for the kitchen. You easily found the kitchen. Though it had large glass windows, the blinds were folded and the door was also locked. You knocked softly and the door opened a few moments later, revealing a cute-looking Lay. He had an apron on and a whisk in one hand. “Oh hello Joo Ri!” Lay greeted. “Hi,” you greeted. “The boys didn’t want me in the locker room so, do you guys need help?” “Just in time,” Lay said answered as he let you in. “Hi D.O.-sshi,” you greeted. He was sitting in front of a counter, slicing some vegetables. “Why do you keep calling me sshi while you only call the other members by their names,” was D.O.’s response. “Oh. Sorry. It’s just that you’re...,” you trailed off, not really sure on how to choose your words. “What?” He asked, looking as serious as he always does. “I guess she’s a little scared of you just like the others D.O.-ya,” Lay chuckled. “What?” D.O. asked. “Hehehe. You are a little scary,” you told him. “Why would you be scared of me?” “Well, you kinda look scary,” you answered. “Why do I look scary?” “Well…,” you struggled. “It’s because you seldom smile and you always wear that serious expression on your face,” Lay said. “I keep telling him to smile more often,” Lay told you. “This is just how I normally look. There’s nothing I can do about it,” D.O. said and went back to what he was doing. “See?” Lay said. “So, how can I help?” You asked. “D.O., do you need help?” Lay asked. “I don’t need help for now. Maybe later,” D.O. told answered. “Great, coz I do. Come with me Joo Ri,” Lay said as he went to another counter where he had spread out some baking materials. “I’m making the filling and the icing for the cake. So I need someone to make the cake base. Can you help me?” “Sure. But I should tell you, I’ve never tried baking before,” you answered. “That’s alright. It’s actually very easy. And I’ll instruct you,” he smiled. “I would also need your help in designing the cake later.” “Alright, no problem.” You started mixing things for the cake base under the careful watch of Lay as he also prepared the icing and the filling. “Wait, why does it seem...rocky,” you muttered. There were large lumps in the mixture which you can’t seem to get rid of as you were beating the ingredients in a large bowl. “That’s because you’re doing it wrong,” Lay chuckled and went behind you. “Let me show you.” Your eyes widened when you suddenly saw his arms slide from your waist on both sides. For a moment you had really thought that he was going to give you a back hug but his left hand reached for the bowl while he held your hand with the other. “Do it like this,” he said as he moved your hand in a circular motion, his warm breath brushing against your cheek as he spoke. He was so close. Too close! Your knees trembled at the thought that you were practically entrapped in his arms, and your thoughts swirled in a muddled mess at his nearness. If you had allowed yourself to be overwhelmed by the jumble emotions inside you, you were sure you had already fainted. You just hoped that your hands weren’t trembling just like your knees. And if they were, you just hoped that he wouldn’t notice. “Just keep beating it like that until the lumps disappear,” he said and finally let you go. “A-alright,” you stuttered and secretly sighed. You were finally done with your task and proceeded to help D.O. with slicing stuff while he was cooking what seems like spaghetti sauce. “Make sure you don’t cut yourself,” D.O. told you, though you couldn’t tell if it was out of concern or if he just doesn’t want to smell your blood. Chanyeol came a while later, filling the room with his loud voice. “Why are you here?” D.O. asked. “Xiumin-hyung told me to come, in case you needed help in bringing the food to the locker room,” Chanyeol said as he literally skipped around the room to check on what everyone had cooked. “D.O.-ya, why are there so many vegetables?” Chanyeol whined as he inspected one of the dishes. “Beef is expensive. We need to cut off on it if we want to cook a lot of dishes,” D.O. answered. “Besides, you people should start learning to eat vegetables.” “You’re a vampire! You shouldn’t be saying that!” Chanyeol complained. “Vegetables are good for you,” you told him. “That only applies to humans. Humans are weak that’s why they need it,” Chanyeol said. “So monsters don’t eat vegetables?” You asked. “That’s just Chanyeol. Don’t believe everything he says,” Lay laughed. “Chicken! They will love this. Especially Kai,” Chanyeol said as he opened a container full of battered chicken. “Ya!” D.O. yelled when he saw Chanyeol take two pieces, but Chanyeol quickly ran away before D.O. could catch him. “If we get short on food I’m cooking you!” D.O fumed. “That’s disgusting,” Chanyeol mumbled while munching the chicken. “Don’t we have too much food already?” You asked. “This,” D.O. said as he referred to everything he was done cooking which could have fed half of your class, “is not enough to fill their big stomachs.” Ding! “The cake’s done,” Lay said as he went to the oven and took the cake out. “I’ll just finish this in a while,” you told Lay and hurried with chopping the vegetables. “Ow!” You muttered as you cut your finger. “Are you okay?” Chanyeol asked as he took your bleeding hand. Lay and D.O. also ran to your side. “It’s just a little cut,” you told them. You went to the sink to wash it. “Aish! I told you not to cut yourself,” D.O. said while covering his nose. “Sorry,” you said. “Are you always this sensitive to blood?” “No. But I should tell you, your blood smells different,” D.O. said. “What do you mean? I think it smells normal,” you said as you sniffed the blood on your finger. “It smells...good,” D.O. uneasily told you. “When you say good, I would guess you mean as food?” You asked, also feeling uneasy. “Yes.” “I thought vampires don’t like monster blood,” you told him. “That’s true. But yours smell very much like human blood. And not only that, it also smells of something more,” he said. “Something more, like what?” “Maybe it has something to do with the monster blood within you, but then again, we vampires technically hate monster blood so I’m not really sure. But you should be careful. There’s something about your blood that’s different. I’m sure the others who have smelled it have noticed it too,” he explained. “Yes, I did. So did Kai,” Lay chimed in. “And it’s the most...tempting aroma I’ve encountered,” D.O. continued. “I didn’t and will not hurt you because you’re my friend, and I have also learned to control my bloodlust. But not all vampires are like me. And I should tell you, vampires are not the only monsters who feed on blood,” he warned. You just stood at the sink, staring blankly at D.O. as you tried to process what he said. “But don’t worry Joo Ri. If you get in trouble don’t hesitate to call on us for help,” Lay said and patted your shoulder reassuringly. “In the meantime, let’s fix that.” Lay produced a band aid from his pocket and secured it around your wounded finger. “How come you have that around?” Chanyeol asked. “I bought a pack yesterday when Joo Ri hurt her knee. I decided to carry it around just in case someone would need it. Besides, Joo Ri seems to hurt herself a lot. And I think I’m right,” Lay chuckled. “Joo Ri, you’re really such a klutz.” Chanyeol told you. “Ya, I’m not that bad,” you frowned. “But sorry for causing you guys trouble.” “You’re not, so no need to apologize,” Lay said as he patted your head. You and Lay designed the cake with Chanyeol’s destructive help. The cake was coated in chocolate icing, though the top was covered in green to imitate a soccer field, or rather that’s how it was supposed to look like but Chanyeol had managed to turn the icing into a disgusting phlegm green. The three of you took a quick lunch from D.O.’s cooking which was indeed surprisingly delicious and went back to work right after. Finally, all the food was done. Chanyeol called Baekhyun, Xiumin and Sehun over to help carry everything to the locker room. You made sure not to catch too much attention or worse, bump into Suho along the way. “Make sure you don’t trip,” Chanyeol kidded, since you were carrying the cake which Lay had placed inside a box. The locker room was already quiet when you got there. You guessed the boys were already done preparing. The door was opened by a sweat-drenched Kai, which strangely made him look all the more attractive. “Food is here!” he shouted to the others as he opened the door. “WAH!” You squealed when you nearly tripped over something on the floor, but Kai caught you by the waist in one arm, just in time. “The cake!” You said in a panic when you realized you were no longer holding the cake. Kai dangled the box in front of you and grinned. You gave a sigh, and wondered how Kai had taken the cake before you could drop it. But then again, it’s the monster world and everything seemed possible. “Aigoo, Joo Ri. I just told you not to trip,” Chanyeol said. “I tripped over this,” you defended, showing him a balloon pump you picked up. “So there it is! I was wondering where that went,” Sehun said and put down the food he was carrying. He took the pump and placed it inside a locker. You saw Lu Han in one corner, and squirmed in embarrassment when you remembered that you slept on his bed last night. “What?” He asked crudely as he raised an eyebrow at you. “Hmph!” You frowned and walked past him. “Annoying grizzly,” you heard him mutter but you decided to just ignore him. “Hello Coach,” you greeted when you have just noticed that Yunho was also there. “Hello Joo Ri,” he greeted back. Kai placed the cake on top of a cluster of tables they have arranged at the center. “Is this a chess table?” You asked when you noticed the black and white squares on the surface. “Yeah. We couldn’t borrow tables from the cafeteria since it’s a weekend and a lot of people stay there, so we just borrowed some from the chess club,” Yunho explained. “What were you people doing?!” D.O. suddenly yelled, with both hands at his hips. Everyone’s attention turned to him. He was wearing a very sour expression as he looked around the room. “I was very busy with cooking but I couldn’t even trust any of you to tidy this place up properly!” “But we did, hyung!” Sehun told him. “Dumping everything in one corner isn’t cleaning!” He said as he pointed at a corner. You followed D.O.’s gaze and you saw that he was right. The boys had placed some of the locker room stuff in an untidy cluster in one corner. The room was also sloppily decorated. “But they wouldn’t fit the lockers anymore,” Sehun reasoned. “Who said you have to put everything inside the lockers?” D.O. huffed and gave an accusing stare at Xiumin, who was in charge with the cleaning. “I tried, but they wouldn’t listen,” Xiumin said defensively. D.O. marched towards the pile and furiously started displacing everything. “You even have the nerve to invite girls in here. And how are we supposed to eat when this place still smells like sweat?!” “Uh-oh, he’s mad,” Chanyeol whispered as he hid behind you. You also noticed that everyone had moved a safe distance away from D.O. Even Coach Yunho just stood in one corner in silence. “Out! All of you!” D.O. said as he pointed at the door. Lu Han was the first one to leave followed by Chanyeol and Baekhyun who were trying hard to hide their laughter, and one by one, the others also left. You hesitated for a moment as you considered whether you should help D.O. or not. “Let’s go,” Kai said while patting your shoulder. “Shouldn’t we help him clean?” You asked. “Trust me, you wouldn’t want to be in his way right now. Don’t worry, he can handle it,” he answered. You followed Kai outside where everyone was arguing on whose fault it was that D.O. got mad. “Will D.O. be alright?” You asked. “He will be once the room is clean,” Lay chuckled. “Don’t worry about him. He explodes like that occasionally, especially when we liter around. He’s a clean and order freak. Mess and dirt drives him nuts,” Baekhyun told you. Finally, after about almost an hour, D.O. opened the door, looking triumphantly satisfied. The locker room changed greatly. It was cleaner, organized, and even the decorations were properly arra
