NINETEEN: The Angel and the Devil “My happiest memory…happiest memory…happiest memory,” you murmured repeatedly to yourself as you looked up at the sky while thoughtfully tapping your pencil on your chin. You were sitting cross-legged under a tree facing the huge track and field with a sketchpad and pencil in your hands. It was your fine arts subject, and your class was tasked to draw anything that would represent your happiest memory. The students were allowed to go out of the classroom to find inspiration as long as everybody comes back five minutes before the end of the period. “What did you draw?” You looked up to see Sehun peering down at your sketchpad. “Nothing yet,” you answered. Sehun sat beside and you and continued with his drawing. You curiously peeked at his sketch pad. He was drawing what seemed like a lot of squares lined together. You could not figure out what it is since his drawing was horrible. “What’s that?” You asked. “It’s a rubik’s cube,” he said. “Oh,” you giggled, because it didn’t look anything like a rubik’s cube. “Don’t laugh at my drawing,” Sehun pouted. “Sorry,” you giggled some more. “So why a rubik’s cube?” “It was the first time Lu Han-hyung smiled at me, when I gave him my rubik’s cube. My father bought it for me, but I never really had fun with it because I didn’t know how to solve it. Then one day, I saw Lu Han-hyung playing with it. He was able to solve it in less than fifteen minutes. He looked like he enjoys playing with it so I gave it to him. That’s how our friendship started,” Sehun answered with a reminiscing smile on his face. “Oh. You met at school?” “No. It was at home, when Lu Han-hyung just came to our family.” “Eh?” You asked a little confused. “My family kinda adopted him. He lives with us,” he explained. “Oh, no wonder why the two of you are so close.” He smiled at you and went back to his drawing. “What happened to his real family?” You asked out of curiousity. “They’re gone,” Sehun answered sadly. “Oh, I’m sorry,” you said, and Sehun gave you a nod. “But, how did he end up with your family? I mean he’s Chinese right, and you’re Korean? Like, Korea and China is a little far.” “Ne, I understand what you mean,” he chuckled. “Lu Han-hyung used to live with Lay-hyung before he lived with us. But due to certain circumstances, he needed to transfer here in Korea. My family and Lay-hyung’s family have a very close relationship. So, my father decided to take Lu Han-hyung in. Lay-hyung stays with my family too when he’s here in Korea.” “Ahh, so that’s why you three are really close. Xiumin mentioned about it before,” you told him. “What’s that?” You looked up and saw Kai peering down at Sehun’s drawing. “Rubik’cube,” Sehun answered as he continued drawing. “Rubik’s cube?” Kai asked with a mocking smile on his face. “Yes, it’s a rubik’s cube,” Sehun said sternly and went back to drawing. “Okay,” Kai chuckled and shrugged at the same time. He walked towards you and lay on the ground beside you. “What’s that?” Someone asked again. It was Chanyeol and he was staring intently at Sehun’s drawing. “It’s a rubik’s cube!” Sehun said in annoyance. “PUWAHAHAHA! That’s a rubik’s cube?! That’s – man I don’t even know what it looks like. Puwahaha!” Chanyeol laughed loudly. “Leave my drawing alone,” Sehun scowled. “Your drawing is no better than mine!” “What are you talking about? My drawing is obviously better,” Chanyeol said as he proudly showed the three of you his drawing. It was a stick figure of a person who seems to be winking with some kind of long rectangle on its head with sharp edges at the top. “What’s that? Teletubies?” Sehun frowned. “It’s Park Dara, dummy!” “Since when did Park Dara grow a horn?” Sehun retorted sardonically. “That’s not a horn. That’s her hair! She wore her hair like that during one of their concerts. It was the best day of my life ever!” Chanyeol said while dreamily hugging his drawing. “You like Park Dara?” You asked. “He’s obsessed with her. He even dreams of marrying her someday,” Kai laughed. “What’s wrong with that?” Chanyeol said defensively. “She doesn’t even know you exist hyung,” Sehun said. “You never know! We might meet each other someday. And it’s not really impossible for her to fall for me. I mean, hey, I’m awesome!” Kai and Sehun both rolled their eyes at Chanyeol and shook their heads. “Dream on, hyung. It’s free,” Sehun said. “Whatever! But my drawing is still better than yours!” Chanyeol retorted. “It’s not!” Sehun yelled back. “So what about you?” You asked Kai, interrupting Chanyeol and Sehun’s bickering, and peeked at his sketchpad which he placed on the ground beside him. It was empty. You looked over at him. He was just lying there with his eyes closed. “Ya, aren’t you gonna start drawing? Fourth period is gonna end soon.” “There’s nothing to draw,” he said without opening his eyes. “You’ve never had a happy memory?” You asked, but he didn’t answer. “Like when your parents bought you your favorite toy, or when you had a birthday party when you were a child?” “My family doesn’t celebrate birthdays,” he answered. “There must be at least something that has made you happy,” you insisted. “How about us? Weren’t you happy you met us?” Sehun asked. “Sehun, that’s too cliché,” Kai responded. “So?” Sehun said stubbornly. “Doesn’t the soccer team mean anything to you?” “Aish! Fine, fine,” Kai said as he sat up and took his sketchpad. “How about you Joo Ri?” Chanyeol asked who had now seated beside Sehun. “I’m still thinking. But I guess I’ll draw my sixth birthday. It’s not really much of a memory since I can’t remember it well anymore, but I think it’s my happiest because it was the last birthday I spent with my whole family.” “Why? What happened?” Sehun asked. “My father died on that same day,” you answered. Kai threw a glance at you. “Sorry,” Sehun said sympathetically. Chanyeol was wearing a grim expression on his face. “It’s okay,” you smiled. “It was a long time ago. And I was still too young back then so his death didn’t really affect me that much. That aside, why are you all here?” You asked when you realized that the place had gotten a little crowded. “Because you’re here,” Kai answered while moving his face a little closer to yours. “Very amusing,” you answered sourly as you pushed his face away. “This spot looks good. And there’s a shade,” Sehun said. “Well, you’re all here,” Chanyeol said. You shook your head and smiled as you started with your drawing. You noticed that you have been spending more time with these guys lately. It didn’t bother you anymore as much as it used to. In fact, you like it. Even Kai doesn’t annoy you as much now. “Wow! You’re really good at drawing,” Sehun said after a while as he watched you draw. “Let me see, let me see!” Chanyeol yelled, pushing Sehun away to peek at your drawing. “Whoa! Joo Ri, change my drawing.” “Huh?” “I’ll get higher marks if you drew mine,” he said as he handed his sketchbook to you. “Ya that’s cheating,” you frowned. “Besides, it’s time to go back,” you said as you glanced at your wristwatch. Lunch came shortly after, with Ji Min blabbering about D.O. all the time. It seemed like she still had not yet gotten over the foosball game a few days ago. In the afternoon, you went to the library after all classes had ended. You decided that it was time to start with your Monsterology report since your books had finally arrived. You made a quick scan through the first few lessons of the book. It was mostly about Mystics. You flipped your book back to lesson one which was about Djins, creatures who can grant wishes in exchange for something. “Oh, like genies,” you murmured to yourself. You remembered what Kris said during your tutorial. “Myths and legends don’t just come out of nowhere. There are origins behind every legend you hear.” “It really is true,” you muttered in amazement. You read on and started writing down notes for your report. You encountered some terms and information which were a little confusing to you so you decided to look for books as reference. The library was huge, and it took you a while to finally find the section of books you were looking for. “Mystics…mystics…mystics…ah! This,” You were about to pick out a book from one of the shelves but your hand landed on top of someone else’s hand. You followed the hand and found yourself gazing up at Lay. “Lay!” “Joo Ri!” You both exclaimed at the same time. “Oh, sorry. You take it,” you said as you quickly removed your hands from his. “No, it’s okay. You can have it,” Lay smiled as he handed you the book. “Oh, no, no! I’ll just search for another book,” you declined. “No, I insist,” he said. “But it’s the only one left. Besides, you found it first so you take it.” Lay chuckled at your persistence. “Ah, I know. Let’s just share it,” he offered. “I-is that fine?” You asked, feeling both nervous and excited at the same time. “Yes,” he smiled. “Where do you sit?” “Um, over there,” you answered, pointing to your table. “Are you getting something else?” “Uh, no.” “Let’s go,” he said and started heading towards your table. You followed behind, tripping along the way out of nervousness. “Oops, careful,” Lay said as he caught you by your shoulders. You caught your breath as his face was just a few inches from yours. He was smiling down at you as he helped you regain your balance. He has a dimple! Oh god
