FIFTEEN: Not So Normal Wednesday “Whew!” You breathed deeply as you and Ji Min took your seats at the cafeteria. “Hahaha! You’re really funny,” Ji Min laughed at you. “I’m just nervous. I’ve never been to a monster class after all,” you told her. “Well, I can’t say it’s the same as normal human lessons, but it’s also not that different. Just relax. No need to be so nervous. It’s just abnormal day ,” Ji Min told you. “Abnormal day?” “Haha! That’s what I call Wednesdays.” “Actually, that fits well,” you laughed. “But really, I can’t shake my nervousness off. I hate it when I don’t know what to expect.” “Well, Monsterology is more on lecture. In Monster Essentials, the teacher might ask the students to try things out but it totally depends on the lesson. As for your Special Class, I have no idea exactly what your class will be doing but the lessons will be more specific on your monster category,” she informed you. “What’s a monster category again?” “It’s more of a collective classification of monsters. For example, you belong to the Feline category since you have cat-like characteristics. Or those who can use fire, water, wind, and etcetera belong to the Elementals category,” she explained. “So, you’re an Elemental?” “No. I may be a sea monster but I can’t control water. I’m just mental,” she said and laughed at her own joke. “Anyways, my Special Class is with piscines and other sea creatures. You, on the other hand, will be with other felines. You’ll also be with canines. They merged the felines’ and canines’ Special Class since you have lots of similar characteristics.” “Canines, you mean like dogs?” “Yes. Monsters with dog-like characteristics like wolves and orthros.” “Wolves? Like real werewolves? And what’s an orthros?” “An orthros is a two-headed dog. You see them a lot in human mythology books. And yes, werewolves, but not like the ones you see in movies who go crazy on full moons and transform into half-human half-wolf creatures. You know, don’t stress yourself out with these things. You’ll learn all these in time. Just chill, ‘kay?” “Even if you say that, it’s still my first monster class,” you said anxiously. “Just enjoy it. You might find it fun since it’s something new to you,” Ji Min encouraged you. “Just one last question, will I get to see students in their monster selves?” “Maybe. Monster classes are actually some of the few instances that we might get to take off our limiters during class. It depends on the teacher,” she answered. Oh God. I just hope I don’t faint. The both of you finished your breakfast quickly and headed to your classrooms. “See you later! Good luck on your first abnormal day!” Ji Min told you as she entered her classroom. You continued walking along the hallway since your classroom is a little farther than hers. “Hey, isn’t she the Class D?” You heard one student whisper as you passed by. “So it’s true? She’s really a Class D?” Her companion whispered back. “Wow, I didn’t know I was this famous,” you murmured sarcastically to yourself. You just tried to ignore them and the curious stares you were receiving from the other students. Rumors sure spread fast. Even when you reached your classroom, your classmates were giving you weird looks and some whispered among themselves. You took a deep breath and continued to your desk. “Good morning Joo Ri,” Sehun greeted cheerily. “Ayo waddup Joo Ri?” Chanyeol also greeted you. “Detention wasn’t that bad, was it?” You looked at the two of them for a long while. Their treatment towards me didn’t change even though they know I’m class D. “Joo Ri?” Sehun asked. “Ya! Song Joo Ri!” Chanyeol said as he continuously snapped his fingers in front of you. “Oh, sorry,” you said. “Are you okay?” Sehun asked. “Yeah,” you smiled. “I was just thinking of something.” “What?” Chanyeol asked. “Something nice,” you answered as you gave the two of them a grateful smile. “Thanks,” you said to the two of them. “What for?” Chanyeol asked confused. You just shrugged in response as you took your seat. “Ya, what for?” He asked again but your Monsterology teacher had already arrived, which turned out to be Mr. Shim, your language teacher. He gave a contemptuous glare at Chanyeol (he still had not gotten over detention yesterday), shook his head and placed his things down on his desk. “Song Joo Ri, please come over here for a while,” he called. You went over to him, wondering what he wanted. “I understand you came from a human school. But I still need a reference for your grades for half the term that you were not here,” he told you. “Oh, okay teacher. I understand. What do I have to do?” “You may request for a special catch-up class from the school. However you have to pay a tuition fee for it, and it might be a little expensive for you since you’ll be the only one enrolling. So I thought of an alternative for you. The lessons are not that difficult compared to your other monster subjects since it’s only a general study about the different kinds of monster. I think you can study it on your own. We’re already at lesson twenty-two today. So what I want you to do is to self-study on lessons one to twenty-one, then make a comprehensive report about what you learned on each lesson. You need to submit the report before the end of this term. I deemed this better than to have you pay for catch-up lessons and take all the previous exams for this class. Does that sound reasonable to you? Or do you want to go with the catch-up class?” “I’ll go with the report, teacher. Thank you very much,” you answered gratefully. You didn’t know how your mother is supposed to pay for extra lessons. “Alright then. You can come to me if there are things that you don’t understand with the lessons. Please go back to your seat now. I’ll be starting class.” “Are you in trouble?” Chanyeol asked you when you went back to your seat. “No, I’m not like you,” you kidded. He scowled at you but you just stuck your tongue out at him. You moved your desk to adjoin Kris’. He shoved his book closer to you as he always did. You stole a glance at him and as usual, he was wearing an impassive, almost bored, expression looking at nothing in particular. “Okay, lesson twenty-two, is about wolves. These are monsters whose Level Three form looks like the animal wolf, but bigger and leaner. Pureblooded wolves are often four times the size of a full grown animal wolf,” Mr. Shim started the class. Your eyes widened in astonishment as you tried to imagine a wolf bigger than a bear. “They are known for their incredible speed. They’re one of the fastest monsters there is. They are also believed to have the sharpest senses, and are the best trackers in the world. Their sense of smell is very remarkable that they can track scents from miles away, and can pick up scents left from days ago,” your teacher continued. “Whoa,” you muttered. Kris turned to look at you with his usual unreadable expression. You gave an awkward smile and mentally noted to keep your reactions to yourself. “Wolves live in packs. Moving in groups helps them to hunt better and it increases their chances of survival during ancient times. But even now in the modern world, wolves still group together in packs, though it is more for social stability, since hunting has now become only a traditional activity rather than survival. A modern wolf pack can be as small as thirty members, or can range to thousands, depending on how powerful a pack is. Packs are headed by an alpha male followed by his mate, the alpha female. The alphas are the strongest among the pack,” your teacher continued. “The Grey wolves are the most common species and are the largest in number, followed by the White wolves and the Brown wolves. There are also those that are already extinct or few in numbers: the Black wolves, the Honshu wolves who can only be found in Japan, and the rarest but rumored to be the most powerful specie: the ancient Dire wolves. All wolves were said to have come from one ancestor, the first Dire wolf called the One Dire, but this is just a theory and is still not proven. There is only one known wolf pack left of the Dire wolves. Though they are few, the Dire wolves are well-respected and are said to be the very influential among the wolf packs. Unlike the other wolf packs, the Dire pack usually keep to themselves and have very limited dealings with human affairs, or even with other monster races.” “Whoa, I never thought such beings exist,” you muttered yet again to yourself, though this time it was not louder than a whisper. You can’t help but shake your head in awe at the new information you were learning. - - - - - - - - -   Kris turned his eyes sideways at you. You were shaking your head and were murmuring incoherent things to yourself. Your teacher had been explaining things differently today in such a way that humans will understand, which certainly was for your benefit. You were funny; you looked amazed with almost every little thing your teacher was saying. Mixed blood with a human upbringing, Kris speculated, as he also remembered your answer to him about your bloodline. “Myths versus facts. Wolves are weak against silver, that’s a myth. Silver by itself does nothing to them. However, silver daggers dipped in the One Dire’s blood and covered with very powerful elven spells were said to have been used to hunt wolves during the Great War between wolves and vampires in the ancient time. These were very powerful tools. It was believed that just a scratch from these daggers was enough to kill a wolf in less than twenty-four hours, like poison. However, there was a rumor that the daggers were all destroyed at the end of the war when the peace treaty between vampires and wolves were made. Thus, none of those daggers exist now. Next, humans believe that wolves are monsters who transform into bloodthirsty half-human half-wolf creatures during full moons,” your teacher discussed and pointedly looked at you. You gave him a tentative nod. “And that they lose themselves whenever they transform, not remembering who they are or the people close to them, and as a result attacking whoever crosses their paths for food. This is of course, a myth. It is believed that the misunderstanding about the half-man half-wolf appearance occurred when a human saw a wolf on his Level Two. But as I have discussed a while ago, their true form is that of a wolf, only bigger and leaner. And though their animal instincts are sharper and stronger when they are in their monster forms, it doesn’t affect their sanity, memories or whatsoever. So in short, they remember who they are and they are aware of what they are doing. And wolves can transform whenever they like.” “Oh,” you muttered again in your seat. Kris eyed you in interest as you looked around at everyone with wide eyes. He determined you must be wondering which among your classmates are wolves. You were very easy to read, at least to him; your actions and expressions give everything away. Song Joo Ri. Category: feline. Race: unknown. Type: mixed-blood, probably an eighth or lower. Class D, Kris reviewed the information he has about you in his mind. He decided to not bother about you during your encounter at the cafeteria when you cut your finger, though your acceptance at the school even though you were below a quarter was a little disturbing. But the rumors about you being a Class D, which made your entry to the school all the more strange and suspicious, made him change his mind otherwise. He needed to know why you got accepted at the school and make sure that you were no threat to their mission. He had tried to find out as much as he can about you, but information about you was sparse. You suddenly spun your head towards his direction. You looked both surprised and embarrassed that he was looking at you again. You gave him another awkward smile and turned your head to the other side. “Song Joo Ri, I told you to keep your reactions to yourself. You look stupid, stupid!” You whispered to yourself, though he can still clearly hear you, as you secretly hit you head with your knuckle, which he can also see. Who are you, Song Joo Ri? - - - - - - - - -   Next period was Physical Education, the only normal subject in your Wednesday class. Everyone went to the track and field while you went to your locker first to get your gym clothes. You were about to close the door of your locker when you noticed a folded piece of paper lying on top of your books. You took it out in wonder since it definitely didn’t belong to you. I need your help! Please go to the store room at the back of the main building before the start of the PE classes. Please you’re the only one who can help me. It was written in a neat handwriting and it didn’t have any name or whatsoever that would give you a clue who wrote it. This is probably just a prank letter, you thought to yourself but placed the note in your pocket anyway. You immediately headed to the track and field and straight to the girls’ changing room. You placed your stuff to your assigned locker. You were about to start changing but you stopped and took out the note again to read it one more time. Somehow, you couldn’t shake off the nagging feeling at the back of your head. You l
