Warm sunlight was streaming on your face and you shifted contentedly on your bed. “Morning!” Ji Min greeted you. She was sitting on her bed, removing her running shoes. It looked like she had just arrived from jogging. “Morning,” you answered sleepily. “I already took breakfast. I was gonna wait for you but I figured you wouldn’t be waking up any time soon.” “It’s okay,” you answered. “You really are not a morning person. It’s pretty late already.” You glanced at the clock. It was a few minutes before ten thirty. “It’s actually earlier than my usual wake-up time.” “Really?” Ji Min asked unbelievably. “If I don’t set the alarm on, I usually wake up around lunch time, except when I’m at a place that I’m not comfortable in like a new place or a hotel or someone else’s house or somethaaaaangwm!” You gave a big yawn and stretched on your bed. You hugged Totoro tighter. “I love weekends because I usually don’t have something to do –” You suddenly stopped. You threw another look at your alarm clock and your eyes grew wide in horror. “OH SHOOT!” You muttered and jolted from your bed. “What’s wrong?” Ji Min asked when you suddenly made a dash for the bathroom. “I forgot I have a tutorial today! Crap!” You yelled from inside. “What? What time?” “Nine o’clock!” “What?! You’re already late! Very late!” “I know!” You came out a few minutes after. Not really having the time to decide which things to bring, you just grabbed your schoolbag and ran out. “I’ll see you later!” You said to Ji Min as you closed the door behind you. You ran like crazy towards the school and headed straight to the library. You bolted through the door and spun your head around to find Kris. Your grand entrance brought a few interested stares from the other students and a not-so-pleased look from the librarians. “Oh no, he already left,” you muttered to yourself. “Excuse me,” one of the librarians said irritably. “You are disturbing the other students. Are you going to just stand there or –” “Oh there he is!” You exclaimed, cutting her off. Kris was sitting in one of the tables near the windows. You hurriedly ran over to him. “I’m very sorry I’m late!” You blurted out and bowed a hundred and ten degrees. Kris put down the book he was reading and turned his attention to you. You didn’t know if he was angry or what since his expression is as cold as always. “AHEM!” The librarian muttered, now wearing a very sour expression. “Sorry!” You squeaked and gave her a peace sign. “Let’s start,” Kris simply said and set the book he was reading aside. Is he angry? You took your seat and took out a pen and a notebook from your bag. Kris opened his book and placed it in between the two of you. “Oh, I’ll go get a book,” you said. “There are no copies of school books at the library,” Kris told you. You gave him a confused look. “There are other books here for reference, but actual school books used in lessons are not available. The school decided it that way so that students will take better care of their books.” “Oh,” was all you said, not because of his explanation, but because it was the longest Kris has said to you ever since your first meeting. He doesn’t seem to be angry. Thank God! “Monsters are creatures referred to by humans as an extremely large imaginary creature, which often looks very ugly and frightening,” he started. You just nodded at him in agreement. “However, monsters, in its truest sense, are creatures that possess a powerful energy called Cores, or most often referred to as monster energy. This energy is unique only to monsters and cannot be found in humans or any other creatures. Cores allow monsters to have abilities that are superior from other creatures. The nature, strengths and weaknesses of Cores vary depending on the different kinds of monsters.” “Cores,” you repeated as you nodded your head while taking down notes. Kris looked at you as though he was waiting for a response. “I’m still following. Please go on,” you told him. “Next, we will tackle the different ways to classify monsters. First is the monster Category. It is a collective classification, grouping monsters according to similarities in their characteristics. There are many monster categories, but among the most common types are Avian, Elemental, Canine, Feline, Piscine, Nocturne, and Mystic.” You nodded, remembering what Ji Min had explained to you about it before. “Can you explain further? Like, can you give an example of some those you mentioned?” You asked. “I’ll give you the most common example, the Canines. These are monsters with characteristics that are similar to dogs. The most common example are wolves. If you remember the lesson during our General Monsterology, you will understand why. Next –” “Um, can you give me more examples? Just to make sure I’m getting the right idea. I know Felines are monsters with cat-like characteristics while Piscines are somewhat like fishes or aquatic creatures or something…right?” “Yes.” “What about the others you mentioned. Those Avian, Nocturnes and stuff.” “Avian, are those that have bird-like characteristics –” “So those that can fly?” “Yes. But not all flying monsters fall under the Avian category –” “Huh? Like what?” “Dragons. They can fly but they do not resemble birds –” “Woah! Dragons are real?!” “QUIET!” The librarian snapped at you. “Sorry,” you whispered and gave an apologetic bow. You turned back to Kris. "So dragons are real?” You asked, still whispering. “Yes –” “Woah! Have you seen one? What do they look like? Do they also breathe fire? Do they also turn human?” Kris didn’t answer. His lips were pressed into a thin line and his brows were slightly furrowed at the center. You stared at him, wondering what was wrong until you realized that you have been cutting him off since a while ago. “Oh. Sorry. Please go on,” you said and smiled apologetically. Joo Ri, behave, you told yourself. “Nocturnes, are monsters who can only use monster energy at night. Elementals are those who can control the elements like fire, water, air and the like. Mystics, are those who can use magic and other spiritual abilities like elves and witches.” Again, you were just nodding your head in astonishment. “Questions?” He asked, though in a tone that was more of a statement rather than a question. “None!” You smiled immediately. Though you had a lot, you didn’t want to annoy him anymore with your questions. You mentally noted to just research some of the things yourself. Besides, most of your questions were out of the main topic. “Next is the monster Race. It is a more specific classification of monsters. Going back to my example a while ago, a Wolf, is a specific race of Canine. Or an Elf, is a specific race of Mystic.” “So, say like my friend Ji Min. She is a mermaid. So her category is a Piscine and her racec is a mermaid, is that right?” “Yes.” He answered. “Alright.” “Next is the monster type. It refers to the strength of your monster bloodline.” “Hehehe,” you laughed awkwardly and scratched your head as you remembered about the B minus incident. “There are three main monster types, pureblood, hybrid and mixed-blood,” he continued without showing any hint that he remembered the embarrassing incident. “Purebloods are those whose monster bloodline is not mixed with human, or any other monster bloodline. Mixed-bloods are those who are mixed with a human lineage. Mixed-bloods are further classified into halfs, quarters, and below quarters, the terms referring to the strength of their monster bloodline as compared to their human bloodline. Hybrids, are mixtures of two or more types of monsters. For example, a half-wolf – half-vampire and the like. “Okay,” you answered, though your head was swirling with too many terms. You were starting to get a headache not only because of information overload, but also because you have a short attention span with discussions involving numbers, names and too many terms. Furthermore, your stomach was starting to complain because you didn’t have time to take your breakfast today. “Next are monster classes, the classification of monsters according to their power and strength. There are six monster classes, class A, class B, C, D, S and X. Class A is considered the strongest or most powerful, followed by B, C, and D.” Yes, I’m one of the weakest. I already know about that, you thought glumly as you slumped on your seat. You were doodling food and a couple of other indistinguishable things on your notebook. “Class S are creatures that possess monster energy, but have lower intellectual capacities than humans. Though some are capable of speech, they can’t think like humans but are more like animals, living only on instinct. Class X are monsters who are unclassified. The extent of their strengths and powers are still unknown due to lack of information.” I’m so hungry, you thought as drew more food on your notebook. “Are you listening?” He suddenly asked. “Huh? Ah, yes,” you said while putting your pen down. “Repeat what I have just discussed.” “Ah..hahaha.. It’s okay. I understood everything.” “If you understood everything you will be able to repeat it,” he said. Though he didn’t look or sound angry, there was something about him that made him seem scary. “Well,” you squirmed guiltily on your seat, clearing your throat. “The monster classes are A, B, C, D, S, and X. A is the strongest while D is the opposite. Then Class X…are unknown. While Class S…are like the animal version of monsters…?” You answered hesitantly. “Listen carefully to what I am discussing. I am giving an assessment quiz after to see how much you have learned.” “A QUIZ?! But it’s still our first meeting!” He didn’t respond but just flipped the book to the next page. I knew it! He is angry that I was late! “You!” You spun around at the angry voice behind you. The librarian was standing there with her hands on her hips. “Out!” “Eh?” You muttered, scratching your head. “Now or I’m banning you here,” she said sternly. “Ne,” you answered. The other students were looking over at your table. Your bowed your head low in humiliation as you put away your things. Kris also started gathering his stuff. “You, you may stay,” the librarian told him. “I am with her,” he answered. You put your backpack on and slowly headed towards the exit with your eyes fixed on the ground. You curiously looked back and saw Kris gracefully striding closely behind you. Oh God. Why do I always make a mess when I’m with this guy? You facepalmed yourself in embarrassment. “Sorry,” you muttered when the both of you were already out. “Let’s find another place,” he said without any emotion. GROWL. Kris looked at you in interest. “Hm?” You asked innocently and pretended you didn’t hear anything. GROOOWWWL. Your stomach made another loud protest. “Let’s go,” he said and s
