You put your glasses on and squinted at the time. It was six in the evening. You wondered what you were doing on your bed at this time. It took you a while to remember what happened. The moment you did, you immediately examined your hands. They looked normal. You nervously felt your behind and you found yourself exhaling loudly in relief. There was no tail there. Your eyesight was also back to normal. You were almost convinced that what happened was only a silly dream until you felt the whiskers on you cheeks. “UMMA!” You heard her rushing towards your room and your door flew open in seconds. “Joo Ri-ya!” She cried and immediately wrapped you in her arms. She finally let you go and cupped your face in her hands. “How are you feeling? Does it hurt anywhere?” “What’s happening to me?” You asked. Just then, a tall man came inside your room. You stared at him in surprise since you didn’t know him. “Umma, who is he?” You asked your mother. “How are you feeling?” The man asked. Your mother stepped aside so he could move closer towards you. He took your hand and checked on your pulse. “Umma, who is he?” You asked in a more anxious tone. “Don’t worry Joo Ri-ya. He’s a friend,” your mother assured you. She seemed to trust the man. “Are you a doctor?” You asked him. “Yes,” he answered politely and gave you a smile. You peered at him in suspicion. He looked too young to be a doctor. He seemed like he was only in his mid-twenties. You also noted, despite your condition, that he’s actually handsome. “So…what’s wrong with me, doctor?” You asked, but he didn’t answer. He continued checking on your pulse and removed your glasses next. “Can you see me clearly?” “No,” you answered. He gave you back your glasses and you put them back on. “How about your hearing, how is it?” “I can hear you pretty well.” “And the other sounds?” You were surprised that he seemed to know what happened. “I-I don’t hear them now.” “And your body, do you feel anything strange?” “I feel whiskers on my cheeks and I’m pretty sure you can see them too,” you answered rather crossly. “Joo Ri-ya!” Your mother reproved. You felt a little guilty but you were getting tired of all his questions and you were getting more and more anxious. You wanted to get straight to the point. “Tell me what’s wrong with me. Is this a new kind of sickness? Is there a cure? Am I going back to normal?” The doctor looked at your mother while she looked at you with an expression you couldn’t understand. “Nothing is wrong with you,” the doctor answered. “Everything that happened to you was normal.” You gawked at him as though he was some kind of alien. You shook your head and picked your ears with your pinky fingers just in case you heard him wrong. “I’m sorry. But I thought I heard you say it’s normal.” “You heard me right. Everything is perfectly normal,” the doctor smiled assuringly. You stared at him blankly with your mouth hanging open. Finally you managed to react. “Umma, I think he’s crazy,” you laughed nervously. “What I said is true. And I’m not crazy,” he added while laughing a little. “For ordinary humans it’s not normal, of course. But for you it is, because you’re not human.” “H-huh?” “You’re a monster, like me,” he answered and smiled at you. You stared at him incredulously and turned to your mother. “I told you umma. He’s crazy.” He just smiled and raised his hand in front of you. You were surprised at his sudden action and moved away from him on impulse. “What are you doing?” You asked as you placed Totoro between the two of you defensively. “Watch,” he said. You hesitated but watched anyway. At first nothing seemed to happen. But slowly, orange-ish fur grew from his once smooth hand and his nails grew long and sharp. You just stared wide-eyed at it until it transformed back into a normal human hand.
