Close Call

Tongue Tied

Taeyeon and Sunny headed back to Taeyeon’s place so Taeyeon could study for her test tomorrow and so Sunny could have her girlfriend’s company. It was 4 in the afternoon and the two were lying in Taeyeon’s bed comfortably. Taeyeon was lying with her bed against a pillow against a wall while Sunny was resting her head on Taeyeon’s lap. She was furiously pressing buttons playing God knows what on her girlfriend’s DS.

Sunny was completely focused on her game while Taeyeon was focused on her studies. However, the two could not clash for Sunny continuously made soft grunting noises.

“B-Ba…Sunny,” Taeyeon almost did the pet name, she couldn’t bring herself to though. She the blonde girl’s hair affectionately, “I’m sorry but could you play in Seohyun’s room or something?”

Sunny paused her game and looked up, “But the whole point was for me to hang out with you,” she groaned, not wanting to leave the comfortable spot that was Taeyeon’s lap. It was a wonderful warmth that made the perfect pillow.

“I know,” she sighed, Taeyeon didn’t want her to leave either, “But while your grunting and noise making is somewhat adorable, it’s hard to focus.”

“Somewhat adorable?” Sunny replied, pretending to be offended.

Taeyeon just gave the girl a look and Sunny sighed in response, “Ugh, why do you have to be so responsible and study?”

“Because I’m not a smarty pants like some people,” Taeyeon replied, remembering how often Sunny would bother her while she tried to study in middle school. She constantly bother her to keep her company when manga or shows or games weren't enough. The girl always did whatever she wanted and then crammed right before a test and came out with more than decent marks.

“This is because I left you alone too long with your sister,” Sunny added, shaking her head.

“No, this is because it’s senior year and I need to keep my marks high so Seo- I mean mom will let me stay in my activities and I can graduate.”

Sunny started laughing at Taeyeon’s slip up, clutching her stomach while rolling all over the bed. Taeyeon, annoyed at her girlfriend’s obnoxious laughter, kicked the small girl until she rolled off the bed.

Once Sunny calmed down from her high, she picked herself up and leaned against the bed to face Taeyeon, “Seriously though, Seohyun doesn’t even need to study so hard. She’s so smart, you should let her have more fun.”

“That’s her way of having fun, she really enjoys studying whether it be school or music theory,” Taeyeon explained, leaning forward to give Sunny a peck on the cheek, “Now go bother her so I can focus!”

Sunny stood up from her spot and did a little twirl, “It really must be hard to focus when you have a girlfriend as cute as me~ distracting you.”

Taeyeon rolled her eyes before throwing her pillow at the shorter girl, “Oh please!” she yelled out as Sunny stuck her tongue out. In a flash she was out the door.

As much as Taeyeon wanted the girl to stay there, she really had to study for that stupid test. She sank into her bed and once again started flipping through her notes.

Sunny wandered around the hallway looking for Seohyun’s room. It had been a very long time since she ventured in there but she was too shy to ask Taeyeon’s mom who was watching tv in the living room. She wondered if Seohyun would even let her in, but paused to laugh at herself, for when had Seohyun ever rejected a request of her unnie? Well, a reasonable request.

She found the door that had a cute sign over it with Seohyun’s name written beautifully. Sunny wondered how she didn’t notice it earlier.

She knocked lightly and waited for a second. Once she heard shuffling on the inside she backed away from the door and waited for the maknae to open it.

“Ah, Sunny unnie,” Seohyun greeted her with a little bow and one of her usual sweet smiles. But then her face contorted into one with a frown when she couldn’t think of any reason why Sunny would be there. “Oh no!” she exclaimed concerned, “Did you and unnie have a fight?”

Sunny just giggled at Seohyun’s comment, “Oh no no, Taeyeon and I may tease each other often but we haven’t fought since we were ten.”

The tall girl sighed in relief, “You and unnie must really be perfect for each other.”

Sunny couldn’t help but blush at her comment; her and Taeyeon really were incredibly compatible. But she shook her head of the embarrassment and looked up at Seohyun, “Seo, mind if unnie stayed in your room? Taengoo couldn’t concentrate on her studying with me there.”

Seohyun squealed a little, “Ahh! That’s so cute!” she said, grabbing Sunny’s hand, “Of course you can stay here.”

She opened up her door a little wider and let the girl in. Sunny admired how much more organized Seohyun’s room was and smiled widely at the extensive collection of animal and Kerero stuffed toys. Seohyun’s textbook and notes were sitting neatly on her bed and her laptop was open on her desk.

“You can use my laptop if you want, unnie,” Seohyun exclaimed, pointing at the device that was quietly playing classical music that Sunny didn’t want to bother trying to figure out the composer.

“Thanks~” Sunny cooed, appreciative of the gesture. Taeyeon wouldn’t let her use hers for some secretive reason. Sunny wondered what she could possibly be hiding but she respected her privacy.

She watched as Seohyun immediately went back to her studies or whatever it was. She thought that she saw her scribbling a score of some sort but she didn’t want to pry.

Sunny opened another tag and admired the music that was playing in the background. It felt really peaceful after an almost stressful afternoon lunch with Tiffany and Jessica. Although Jessica was much less hostile, she couldn’t help but feel anxious around her. Or the two girls in general seeing how she screwed up again. Sunny really needed to get herself together or else she would get to three months only after 80% of the girls found out that she was Sungmin.

When she opened her email she found the usual one email from each of the girls minus the three who knew about her. They spoke about mundane things like what was happening with each other. Sometimes Yuri or Hyoyeon would have a joke or recipe they learned. Tiffany and Jessica would email her in English so she could practice as well. Those conversations were mostly the same except every once in a while Tiffany would ask for her to edit a paper or Jessica would show off some of her new art work.

Jessica’s was sent the most recently and she opened it up to find a message longer than usual.

Sunny-ah!!

You’ve heard of Taeng’s new boyfriend, right? I’m sure she’s spoke of him a lot. I bet anything that if you and her were in contact earlier than your message on Friday, you would’ve already known about him a long time ago. You two are really close after all, right?

It’s kind of funny how your first email arrived the day before we were introduced to him. A nice coincidence, I think?

Sunny’s eyes widened at that line and leaned in closer to the screen, her heart pounding hoping that Jessica didn’t also just figure her out.

Maybe the two were meant to be or something with a coincidence like that. Was Taeng celebrating your return and then she asked her out or something?

Sunny read the line over about ten times. She definitely wrote ‘she’.

Anyway, here’s a cute selca of your friend Jessica! You should send one of yourself! I haven’t seen you in a long time. Anyway, you should show up at the talent show, not graduation. Think about it!

Sica

Sunny leaned back on her chair and let out a long sigh. Even if the ‘she’ was perhaps a typo, sending a selca would be a problem. Did she know any friends with wigs? At least she didn’t throw out any of her old clothes.

She was sent another email.

I’m waiting.

It said simply and Sunny almost jumped. She had completely forgot that this stupid email program told the other person when they read the email.

“Seohyun! Quick, do you have a wig??” Sunny was panicking a little and her eyes would’ve scared Seohyun if she looked up.

“Ah yeah unnie, there are a few in the closet,” she said calmly, clearly too focused to notice the sense of urgency in Sunny’s voice.

Sunny opened the closet and was greeted by three mannequin heads with three different wigs. She told herself she’d ask about it later. She picked a brunette one that was a little curly. Before asking for an outfit, she remembered that she’d be too small to fit into any of Seohyun’s clothes and made a dash for Taeyeon’s room.

---

Jessica tapped on her desk impatiently, waiting for Sunny’s reply. If her theory had been right then Sunny and Sungmin were one in the same person. But she needed proof. If she brought it up and was wrong, she could only imagine how embarrassing that would be.

A minute or so later she received a new email.

Yeesh Sica, you could be a little more patient.

Attached was a typical aegyo filled selca of Sunny. It looked like her hair was shorter but all in all she looked the same. Jessica sighed in defeat, turned out that she was wrong. But she felt relieved at the same time. She wasn’t sure how she could take it if Sunny was the blonde oppa all along and the two best friends were actually dating.

She sent a simple reply and told her friend that she was going to dinner. After she sent the email she closed her lap top and went to bed wondering if she should really drop her suspicious. Maybe she was resourceful or planned for suspicions and bought a wig?

Jessica walked from her desk to her bed and decided to take a nap before dinner. Maybe she was thinking too much about the entire situation.

---

Monday came quickly and Sungmin was drawing attention as he walked through the hallways for the first time. Sunny wanted to find Taeyeon quickly and regretted going to school without her. But the girl had a test and she didn’t want to take her attention until it was over.

Although usually confident of herself, Sunny couldn’t help but feel nervous on her first day. On the outside she managed to keep a strong image of herself projected. Her head was held up high and her hair was styled the way she wanted it to. She smiled at every person that made eye contact with her and she was certain that she carried herself well.

Yuri was the first to find her.

“Ah, Sungmin oppa!” She greeted, running towards Sunny, “Good morning!” she exclaimed cheerfully. “I hope you had a big breakfast today! I’m sure you’re nervous about your first day of school here, but don’t worry! The senior class is really friend and I’m sure they will all accept you with open arms.” She pumped her fist for Sunny and chanted ‘fighting’ a number of times. Yuri surely didn’t change much with her energy surging from her even in the morning.

Yoona popped up from behind her, a little less energetically but more than what was normal to have in the morning, “Do you want us to show you to your first class?” She asked eagerly, grabbing Sungmin’s arm.

Sunny just nodded at her junior and allowed herself to be dragged around the school.

“You have the same homeroom as Hyoyeon and Tiffany,” Yuri pointed out as they walked towards the class.

The school was pretty big and Sunny could feel herself getting dizzy. She hoped that Hyoyeon or Tiffany was in her next class as well so she wouldn’t get lost. She forgot to look her schedule over with Taeyeon to see if she had any of the same classes. Not that she would have much trouble getting along with her old friends or even with meeting anyone new, she just felt a huge sense of comfort with her best friend.

As soon as they got to her class, the two other girls quickly said their goodbyes so they wouldn’t be late to their own class. Sungmin walked into the class with no problem and found an empty seat behind Hyoyeon who didn’t seem to notice him. She was looking over some notes and had her earphones in. Sunny looked around the room for Tiffany and ignored the eyes that were staring at her.

They could at least introduce themselves if they were so interested, she thought to herself. She could feel them silently judging her and she wondered if their thoughts were good ones.

Her questions were answered once the teacher had introduced Sungmin. He got a good reception from both the boys and girls, which pleased Sunny. Hyoyeon and Tiffany cheered for her the loudest which almost caused her to blush. But of course, Sungmin kept his cool and started building his reputation.

Although it was confusing at first, Sunny managed to keep up with the material being taught in class. There was a bit to catch up on but luckily Sunny knew most of what was going on. It was weird having to get used to their system of schooling coming from America, but with some hard work she could adjust. Sunny was naturally intelligent after all.

It turned out that she shared a number of classes with her old friends, although it was quite an assortment. She was disappointed to not being sharing any classes with Yoona, Seohyun or Sooyoung but then she remembered the age difference.

Lunch rolled around rather quickly and Sunny found comfort once again in Taeyeon’s hand. The nine of them squeezed onto two tables in the cafeteria. Taeyeon said that they always ate in the same area and in the warmer weather they’d eat outside or on the roof if it was empty. As expected, the cafeteria was noisy and the atmosphere was rather busy. However, all the girls focused their attention on Sungmin.

“How was your first day?” Tiffany asked as she delicately ate her sandwich. It was a huge contrast to Yoona who was sitting beside her, quickly and rigorously consuming the lunch box prepared by Seohyun.

“Pretty good,” Sungmin answered, smiling at the girls who were giving him their full attention. “It’s weird getting used to this system of schooling since I’m from America but the material isn’t that foreign.”

“Oh yeah, you English,” Sooyoung spat out awkwardly but confidently. Tiffany, Sunny and Jessica laughed at her adorable attempt.

“It’s not that good,” Sungmin replied in English. All the girls turned to Jessica and Tiffany who just smiled at the blonde boy. Seohyun and Sooyoung understood but at a much slower rate and the other girls picked out a few of the words and the general meaning. Taeyeon silently reminded herself to ask Fany and Sica for those lessons again and to try to ask Sunny without her teasing her.

The nine girls ate happily and talked comfortably. Sunny managed to keep Sungmin composed and didn’t screw up once. She did happen to notice Jessica occasionally watching her but she wasn’t sure if it meant too much. Sunny was sure her picture was good enough evidence that she was herself and totally not Sungmin but then again none of her best friends were that naïve. However, for the most part of her plan was working out pretty decently.

Taeyeon had scolded her the other day for spilling things like how they’ve slept together in the same bed and causing suspicion again. She kept saying how if this kept happening then Sunny would be revealed within a month tops. Sunny couldn’t have any of that.

She told Yoona over text of her slip up and after a few laughing texts in response, Yoona offered to help her keep herself straight whenever she was around.

Sunny wasn’t entirely sure what that meant but she was thankful.
