Welcome Back

Tongue Tied
Sunny stood in front of Taeyeon's door. Everything felt the same, the atmosphere, the condition of the house before her, but the girl standing before the door was very different. Sunny had been anticipating this moment since she and her parents boarded that plane home hours ago.

As she procrastinated what she came to do, she thought about how guilty she felt for not helping her parents unpack in their new house in the same old neighbourhood. However, they understood completely what Sunny had to do. Besides, it's not like she would take too long when seeing her old friend.

It's been three years since Sunny had stepped foot in Korea. She kept her promise of sending letters and emails and skyping with her friends, but within the past year they had lost touch due to family difficulties in America which eventually brought her to come back to her hometown. Luckily, her dad managed to get his old job back and sooner or later, they would go back to normal.

However, within that past year a lot had changed in Sunny. The difficulties at home which caused her to seclude herself from her new american friends gave her time to think and reinvent herself. Instead of the light makeup she usually put on, she simply wore eyeliner. And instead of her flowing long, brown hair, her hair was cut short and was dyed a platinum blonde. Her wardrobe had slowly changed too. If one were to take a look into her closet, they would question if it truly belonged to a girl.

Sunny was never a stereotypical girly girl, but she had occasionally worn dresses and always managed to give off that feminine charm. Now however, she had a rougher expression and she fashioned ripped skinny jeans and a hoodie. Her parents questioned her transformation when she first cut off most of her hair. She told them that she felt more comfortable dressing up as a boy after having to do it for a school play. They didn't question it too much after her explanation and although it was a little strange for them at first, they accepted it.

And since that moment she became more and more of a tomboy.

Finally in front of her best friend's house, she took a deep breath and knocked loudly.

Hearing a scramble on the inside, Sunny braced herself to meet Taeyeon again. Her heart was pounding mercilessly against her chest. She lost contact with Taeyeon with all her friends that year ago and wondered if she changed at all. She can imagine her friend having matured since they last saw each other. After all, even though she has seen pictures, nothing beats the real thing.

Her question was answered the moment the door swung open.

The two girls only grew a few more inches in the past three years. Unfortunately, Taeyeon was still a centimetre or two taller.
Sunny remembered her plan and shook away her uncertainty and wore a smirk.

"Hey girl, are you up to anything tonight?" Sunny asked in as deep of a tone she could muster without sounding too forced.

Taeyeon was taken aback at the sight of this gorgeous oppa in front of her. hung open a little as she stared at the face of this "stranger", trying to figure out why they looked so familiar.

"Sunny?!" Taeyeon almost screamed, stretching to levels Sunny had never witnessed before. "Is that...is that you?"

Sunny gave her best friend a smile, "It's been a while, eh?"

Instead of responding, Taeyeon pulled her best friend into a tight hug. Even though they sent letters and skyped a lot since she moved away, she hadn't been with her physically in three long years.

But suddenly, the pain of being neglected for a year shot back which caused Taeyeon to slap Sunny in her arm.

"You! You!!" Taeyeon only repeated the word a hundred times, "You! You?"

"Yah, Taengoo! Calm down, why don't you?" Sunny cried, placing her hands on Taeyeon, shaking her to a calm.

"You! It's been a year Sunny and you haven't called, been online, written, nothing! The other day Yoona wanted to have a bonfire with everything we had of you to spite you for - for...for..."

Taeyeon just started crying at this point, her anger and frustrations and relief to see her best friend overwhelming her senses. She wasn't sobbing, as she still managed to glare at Sunny. But before the shorter girl could say anything else, Taeyeon furiously pulled her into the house.

After sitting down, Taeyeon left to make the two of them tea. In her absence Sunny thought about how much her friend had grown. Although petite, Taeyeon still had all the curves she needed which Sunny couldn't help but notice. Her hair was short and she had dyed the tips of her brown hair blonde which looked really cute on her. Sunny also noticed that her Taengoo started wearing more makeup in the past year which made her baby face look more mature. However the aura of Taeyeon was still the same which comforted Sunny.

She felt really bad considering Taeyeon's reaction, but it was really nice seeing her after so long. Sunny laughed to herself, thinking how good it felt to be in such a familiar place again. As fun and different America was, nothing was like home in Taeyeon's house where she also grew up.

"Yah! Why are you laughing?" Taeyeon demanded as she walked back into the living room, "You have a lot of explaining to do Soonkyu!" Taeyeon tried to sound really mad, but she was much too happy to have her best friend there again.

"I know, I know," Sunny replied with a sigh before taking her tea, "It's really...complicated."

"It better be," Taeyeon replied harshly, the tone she only used for Sunny, "I mean you haven't contacted any of us for a year Sunny, a whole year! Do you have any idea how upset everyone is about this?"

"I'm sorry it's just, family stuff happened and things became hard and now we've moved back here," she managed to reply quickly, not wanting to go into detail at the moment.

Taeyeon decided not to prod just yet but she couldn't help but ask, "And you went crazy so you chopped off your hair and dyed it some really bright colour to match your name?"

Sunny laughed at Taeyeon's remark and took another sip of her tea, "Yes, that's exactly it. And I am actually a turned serial killer now, having killed my parents and now I'm after my best friend."

If it was anyone else, they would have been taken aback by Sunny's serious tone and comment. However, due to their history Taeyeon could only roll her eyes, "Just get to explaining Soonkyu, we need to call the rest of the girls and have a reunion."

Sunny's heart jumped out of her chest at the thought, "Actually, Taengoo...I want to keep this a secret."

"WHAT?" Taeyeon shouted, nearly dropping her tea, "Soonkyu, are you jet lagged or?"

"No, no! It's just...I'm not ready and I still have so much to tell you and," Sunny took in a deep breath, "I...Taengoo listen up."

Taeyeon didn't respond but only looked at her friend with curiosity.

"I've changed, a lot of things have changed. And I can't tell you everything right now but I'll reveal it to you slowly within the next week or so, I promise."

The other girl could only nod as she waited for Sunny to finish.

"I did a lot of soul searching with what happened this past year and I think I feel more comfortable dressing as a guy."

Taeyeon didn't even notice the first time, but Sunny did dress quite differently. Although her best friend had always been boyish, she always gave off a lot of feminine charm. But the biggest change was in Sunny's chest. Being the ert that she was, Taeyeon took note of her friends' assets. And always she had been jealous of Sunny's ample chest. Tonight however, there were no sign of Sunny's curves in her chest area.

"It all started when I started dating this girl."

The word girl certainly piqued Taeyeon's interest. Taeyeon and Sunny only shared their bicuriousities with each other growing up, but neither had the courage to act upon them.

"She was the first friend I made when I moved to America and she was korean too so she helped me learn more english. She introduced me to all of her friends and eventually, I came to realize that I liked her. It was weird because, well like we talked about before, this whole not being straight thing was well, an issue. But back at my school there were so many out people, I was surprised."

Taeyeon only nodded, thinking about the many things she needed to inform Sunny of as soon as they caught up with each other.
"Anyway, I gathered up the courage and I asked her out." Sunny's face sank at this line and Taeyeon knew what was coming up next.

"She said yes and it was really really great for about a month. One night, while we were um, making out," she blushed at this point and Taeyeon just rolled her eyes, "She kept stopping until eventually she started crying. I was so scared at that point, wondering what I did wrong, right?"

Taeyeon continued nodding, almost feeling dizzy at all of the sudden head movements.

"And then she told me that she wasn't really attracted to me."

Sunny smiled despite her eyes watering, "We talked about how I was just an experiment to her and that she didn't want to keep going on. She apologized and hoped that we stayed friends. Unfortunately, a week after that all the **** with my family and  my dad's work happened and we stopped being in touch. I kind of wish she'd come visit me but she never did, she just stopped calling me and I lost contact with all my friends there."

And then silence as Taeyeon took the story in. At this point she walked over to Sunny and wrapped her arms around her. Sunny cried for only a little while, reliving the entire scene.

Suddenly her muffled words came through Taeyeon's moist shirt, "She told me that if I was a boy, it could work out."

The words were painful as they rang in Sunny's memory. Her anatomy wasn't her fault, but her ex's ual preferences weren't her fault either.

"This made me think while I was alone, and after chopping my hair off and after I started binding and going into the public that way, I found out that I was more comfortable as a guy."

Taeyeon thought to herself for a moment before responding, "So do you want to get a change or something?"

Sunny shook her head, "No actually, I just like dressing this way but I very much enjoy my lady parts."

Taeyeon made a confused expression, "So you just like crossdressing but you don't want to be a guy?"

"It's pretty simple Taengoo, don't hurt yourself overthinking this."

Suddenly, the front door swung open and Seohyun walked into the house. Taeyeon's younger sister had returned home from studying at the library and she walked into the living room to greet her sister.

However, before Taeyeon could re-introduce Sunny to Seohyun, Sunny gave the older girl a look and stood up first.

"You must be Seohyun," Sunny started with the same masculine tone she used on Taeyeon earlier, "I'm Sungmin, your sister's new boyfriend."

Taeyeon's eyes almost popped out of her head but Seohyun didn't notice as she was checking out her sister's new boyfriend. Her sisterly instincts kicked in but after concluding that this Sungmin had a very friendly atmosphere and was very good looking, she bowed to him.

"It's very nice to meet you!" she felt flushed at this sudden new man in her older sister's life but she decided to be supportive nonetheless. She was very curious about him and wanted to ask him some questions but she felt that it might have been rude. So instead, she bowed again to both of them before telling Taeyeon that she'll give them some space.

As Seohyun left, Sunny started laughing but was interrupted when Taeyeon slapped her arm.

"Yah! Why did you do that?" Taeyeon asked, her face pink and flushed from what just happened.

"Taengoo, you're blushing!" Sunny noticed, enjoying the scene as Taeyeon turned into a darker shade of red. It didn't help that her pale complexion emphasized her rosy cheeks.

Sunny took advantage of this moment and walked up to Taeyeon with half lidded eyes and a charming smirk. Taeyeon was about to yell at her to back off but she couldn't. Sunny's arms were suddenly around her best friend's body and the two stared at each other intensely.

"Sunny, you still haven't told me why you told my little sister that we're boyfriend and girlfriend," Taeyeon said cooly, despite her rigid body against Sunny.

"I thought it might be fun," she answered casually, shrugging her shoulders.

"Fun?" Taeyeon asked, raising her eyebrow and quickly becoming more aware of Sunny's warm breath against her neck.

"If I enrolled at your school as a guy."

Taeyeon pushed Sunny back in surprise, "You're kidding, right? That's crazy! And why don't you just tell everyone you're back so they can kill you for being inactive for a year and things can go back to how they used to be?" Taeyeon's arms were flailing about as she said this, expressing passionately how silly Sunny's idea was.

"I'm not joking, Taeng. I really, I'm not ready to tell everyone. This isn't like three years ago when all I had to say was I'm leaving. There's so many things to explain and I honestly, I don't think I could take it right now. Can't we just have some fun like this? Like, an experiment or something," Sunny really didn't want to face her friends right now. She hadn't really socialised in the past year or so either, everything would just be awkward and she couldn't have that.

"Come on, we only have three months of the year left as seniors. I promise I'll tell everyone before graduating!"

Taeyeon eyed her best friend, her crazy best friend turned boyfriend some how. She bit her lip, thinking about the repercussions of such an event. And then she thought about introducing Sunny as Sungmin and how interesting it would make their final months of school together.

"Okay," Taeyeon agreed, much to Sunny's satisfaction, "But on one condition."

"Yes, honey?~" Sunny purred, making Taeyeon cringe in response.

"Aigoo, don't do that Sunny! Anyway, I want you to email the girls and tell them that you're alright and that things were just difficult for a while, okay?" Taeyeon's eyes grew serious. It wouldn't be fair if they had their fun with Sunny's crossdressing while the others continued to be worried about her disappearance.

"Fine, fine, you're right I should at least email them."

"They miss you," the older girl said softly, returning to Sunny's side and wrapping an arm around her.

Sunny returned the gesture and placed her head on top of Taeyeon's shoulder, "I know Taengoo, I miss them too."

"Sooyoung and Yoona miss you the most, you know," Taeyeon muttered, the blonde's hair.

"I have a bunch of angry emails from both of them," Sunny laughed, recalling the flaming emails and angry pictures sent from the two shikshins.

"I bet you're happy Sooyoung misses you so much, eh?" Taeyeon joked, her laugh building as Sunny flinched from her statement.

"Ah! Taeng it's been three years are you seriously going to still tease me about my stupid crush on that giant?" She was incredibly defensive and Taeyeon couldn't help but laugh even louder.

"Crush? You were in love with her! We talked for about two hours about her that night before you left because you were so moved by your goodbye!" Taeng remembered the night clearly, Sunny was between blushing furiously and sobbing and wondering if their goodbye meant anything more. "I still think you should have confessed before you left."

Sunny shook her head, "It would've made things awkward. Anyway, that's all in the past, okay?"

"She's more beautiful now," Taeyeon added in quickly, smiling at her shorter friend, "I think you'll fall for her again." There was a soft sense of sadness in Taeyeon's tone which Sunny didn't fail to pick up.

"Are you jealous, Taengoo?" Sunny playfull and skillfully asked, avoiding the topic of her history of feelings for Sooyoung.

"Of course not!" Taeyeon responded a little too quickly.

Sunny wrapped her slender arms around her Taengoo's waist and pulled her close. She rested her head on her best friend's shoulder and the two stood in silence for a while, their breathing reaching the same pattern.

"So are we really going to do this?" Taeyeon finally asked, breaking the silence.

"I already registered at your school as Lee Sungmin, my parents are all for the idea too. They're willing to play along to repay me for the headaches from the past year." Sunny's mouth was way too close to Taeyeon for her comfort, and as Sunny's hot breath pushed against her ear she felt herself shudder.

"N-No, I meant about...this," Taeyeon pulled the courage to say, unsure what to make of this whole boyfriend and girlfriend dynamic. "Wouldn't it be awkward?"

Sunny had thought about it before, the possibility of her and Taeyeon dating. It was one of the thoughts that crossed her mind when she made the transformation. It couldn't possibly be weird. They were both attractive girls who were indeed attracted to girls. The two fit like puzzle pieces and it was apparent since they were kids.

"You're my best friend Taeng," Sunny managed to answer after a silently uncomfortable silence for Taeyeon. "If anyone would be the perfect girlfriend, I'm sure it would be you."

Taeyeon couldn't help but blush at Sunny's comment, but instead of bashfully accepting her compliment, she slapped Sunny's arm, "You smooth talker you. You better treat me right."

Sunny laughed into Taeyeon and the other girl responded well to the laugh. The two shook with laughter for a good two minutes before Sunny's phone went off.

"Ah, sorry mom! I'll be home in two shakes."

Taeyeon lead Sunny to the door after hearing the conversation and opened it for her new girlfriend. "Tell your parents I said hi, okay?" she requested, smiling at Sunny who was already out her door.

Sunny nodded at Taeyeon, a different smile from what she was used to. It was still warm and Taeyeon received it well, "It was good seeing you again, Soonkyu."

"Yah! It's Sungmin now!"

Taeyeon almost forgot the new name and laughed instead at nothing but the new possibilities of the future ahead of them. Before she knew it however, Sunny had cupped her face and kissed her cheek.

"Goodnight, Taengoo," Sunny greeted before leaving Taeyeon there with hung open.
