Something More

Tongue Tied

The week practically flew by for Sunny with all the activities and school work going on. She would say that she was really tired if it wasn’t for how much fun she was having. It was Friday night and she was lying on Taeyeon’s couch watching Kerero with Seohyun and Taeyeon while eating sweet potatoes. Sunny and Taeyeon were also drinking some soda while Seohyun drank water.

It was a relaxing Friday night until someone knocked on the door. Taeyeon looked to her younger sister and the girl nodded before wandering over to unlock the door.

Outside was Hyoyeon, Yuri and Yoona, each wearing a wide smile on their face.

“Hyunnie~!” Yoona exclaimed, jumping onto her best friend.

Yuri and Hyoyeon let themselves in and the four girls walked to the living room, Seohyun confused but delighted to see them.

Sunny was talking with Taeyeon about something but switched her tone immediately when she saw her other friends walk in.  She cursed under her breath hoping they didn’t catch anything.

“Yah! What are you guys doing in here so suddenly?” Taeyeon asked, raising her arms.

“Your parents invited us,” Hyoyeon said casual.

“Well, more like Hyoyeon insisted we come over and they said yes,” Yuri corrected, grabbing herself some sweet potato.

“Hyunnie, didn’t we watch this episode already?” Yoona asked, watching the screen carefully.

“Yeah, but I like this one a lot,” Seohyun added shyly, blushing as she held her hands to her face in embarrassment.

“Are the rest of you guys going to pop in through that door?” Sungmin asked, laughing a little at the sudden surprise, “You have too many friends, Taeng.”

Taeyeon sighed, “Sorry about all this.”

“Why are you saying sorry?” Hyoyeon asked, feigning hurt by Taeyeon’s words, “Sungmin oppa likes us a lot, right?” She put her arms casually around Sungmin’s shoulders and he just smiled.

“Of course,” he replied.

A week in and the girls were very much comfortable with Sungmin. Luckily, Sunny had no more slip ups for the whole week. She was still trying to catch up on the routine but all in all she got along with all the girls very well. It comforted Sunny to know that we was accepted so well by her group of friends even with a different persona.

“Sica and Fany said they’ll be arriving later,” Yuri announced while reading her texts.

“Aigoo, why are they telling you but not me?” Taeyeon complained before texting her friends.

“I better go prepare more food,” Seohyun announced before grabbing Yoona’s hand and rushing to the kitchen.

“Why are you bringing that kid? She’s going to eat everything!” Yuri yelled out as the two dashed away. Yoona just stuck out her tongue.

Another person knocked on the door and Taeyeon went over to open it. She was greeted by Sooyoung who had two bags of chips in her hand. Make note that she was eating one of them.

“Hey Taengoo,” Sooyoung greeted before walking in, “Thanks for inviting us over.”

“I didn’t invite anyone!” Taeyeon exclaimed, exhausted by her friends’ antics. This was not the first time they’d done this.

Every once in a while Hyoyeon and Yuri decide to invade one of their houses. The victim changes constantly but because Seohyun and Taeyeon’s house was the biggest, their place was crashed the most often. Not to mention how little their parents cared as long as everything was cleaned up after and nothing broke.

She hated to admit it but Taeyeon enjoyed being a spontaneous hostess. Occasionally she felt that she was the leader or guardian of these kids and had to talk care of them despite only being a few months older than most of them. Apart from Seohyun she was the most independent and responsible. And although she didn’t always disclose her own information, her friends often went to her just for an ear to listen.

The house started getting noisier as Sooyoung, Sungmin and Hyoyeon were making comments about the Kerero they were all watching. Sooyoung, Hyoyeon and Yuri were on the floor watching while snacking on Sooyoung’s chips while Seohyun and Yoona were on a couch together sharing the last sweet potato. Sungmin was on a recliner with Taeyeon in his lap while all their eyes were focused on one thing.

“How much longer until they come?” Sunny whispered to Taeyeon who was texting the missing two girls.

“Fifteen minutes,” Taeyeon answered after sending another reply, “Tiffany’s trying to get a ride from her dad because Sica’s too lazy to walk.”

Sunny laughed really loud and threw her head back.

“Sungmin oppa has a really exaggerated laugh,” Yoona pointed out with a wide smile, “I think he’s getting it from Taeyeon unnie.”

“Oh no, he’s always been like this,” Taeyeon responded, “No wait, do I really have an exaggerated laugh?”

All the girls looked at each other and Sungmin just kept laughing.

“Don’t answer,” Taeyeon said with a sigh.

After the Kerero episodes ended, Hyoyeon insisted that the group watch a movie. As the girls fought over the genre, Sunny held onto Taeyeon tighter.

“So does this happen often or?” she asked with a whisper so the other girls couldn’t hear her.

“Too often,” Taeyeon replied simply while shaking her head, “These girls think they own the place.” She said the last line loudly for the other girls to hear and the three sitting on the floor just waved their hand around.

“We know you love our company,” Yuri stated, turning around and winking at the short girl in the recliner.

Tiffany and Jessica finally arrived with Seohyun answering the door. They sat themselves on the couch next to Yoona before Tiffany asked about what they were watching.

“15 minutes and 45 minutes are very different from each other,” Taeyeon mentioned while glaring at her friends who were casually putting off their lateness.

“Taengoo, it’s not like we planned this ahead or anything,” Jessica replied, waving her hand as if brushing the event off. “You know we’re never good at arriving on time anyway.”

Taeyeon just sighed.

“Sorry TaeTae, but we’re here now so that’s all that matters right?” Tiffany offered her eye smile as an apology and Taeyeon sighed again. Sunny chuckled lightly at the exchange.

“I want to watch a Disney movie or a musical!” Seohyun voiced enthusiastically, running to her unnies who were shifting through their dvd collection.

“Nothing scary!” Jessica demanded, not wanting to move from her spot.

“Something funny,” Hyoyeon called out loud while sifting through their choices.

“Something romantic!” Tiffany cooed now running to the other girls who were selecting.

“Seohyun we just watched cartoons, we’ll do the Disney movie next time, okay?” Taeyeon said as she searched for a movie with her friends. Seohyun nodded and went back to her seat, jumping into the arms of Yoona who had them open wide for her.

Sunny was observing her friends fighting over the movie from afar. She knew it was a long shot but she felt like a romantic comedy for the night. It was an English movie but she knew that it was available there with Korean subtitles. All she needed was for the girls to have it.

“What about 50 First Dates?” She suggested from her spot. The reaction from the girls pleased Sunny for it seemed like they knew what she was talking about.

“That’s one of my favourites!!” Yuri exclaimed as Taeyeon pulled the movie from the pile.

“Good pick Sungmin oppa,” Seohyun said from the side and the rest of the girls agreed.

As the movie went on, all the girls piled onto the floor to watch together. Occasionally Hyoyeon would make comments on how goofy Adam Sandler looked and Seohyun and Yoona commented on how cute the marine animals in the movie were. Jessica wished the subtitles weren’t there since even though she could understand English she couldn’t help but read them.

Sunny and Taeyeon were sitting comfortably on the floor in each other’s arms and just enjoyed the movie thoroughly.

When the credits started rolling, Taeyeon turned the lights back on and several of the girls were tearful from the beautiful ending.

“Can you imagine?” Sooyoung asked, wiping her eyes, “Someone who loved you so much they made you fall in love with them again every day.”

“I would do that for the person I loved,” Yuri declared through teary eyes as well, “It seems hard but it looks like it’ll be worth it.”

“Would you do that for Taeyeon unnie?” Seohyun asked Sungmin suddenly. Taeyeon blushed at the question and Sunny nodded like it was the most obvious answer.

The girls shrieked in happiness at the thought.

“Don’t jinx it now,” Taeyeon joked lightly.

Hyoyeon’s eyes shifted into a more mischievous look before she started poking Sungmin and Taeyeon simultaneously. “So, how far have the two of you gone?”

Tiffany gasped and slapped the shorter girl on her arm, “You can’t just ask that!” She was blushing a little at the thought and couldn’t help but be a little curious.

Jessica rolled her eyes, “Please spare me.”

Yoona’s eyes widened but she was also very curious, “Tell us! I’ll cover Hyunnie’s ears.”

“Unnie!” Seohyun protested embarrassed. Her cheeks were a little pink but she too was wondering what the answer was.

“Actually,” Sungmin started, earning a glance from Taeyeon who was unsure about what to say. “We um…”

Taeyeon hid her face in Sungmin’s shoulder before sheepishly saying, “We’ve only kissed.”

There was silence in the room. All the girls exchanged looks of disappointment and disbelief while Sunny and Taeyeon were avoiding their gaze.

“No way,” Jessica muttered in shock, “I mean, Taeng…right after we confessed…we um…”

“Jessi!” Tiffany blurted, covering her face, “We don’t need to know!”

Hyoyeon just laughed, “Sungmin oppa! I didn’t think you were this shy! You two seem so close and you’ve been here for a while now. Just make out with her already.”

The other girls screamed a little at the bluntness of Hyoyeon’s commentary.

Taeyeon and Sunny just looked at each other, wondering why they hadn’t done more than just an innocent peck.

All of the girls decided they were sleeping over. Yoona called sleeping with Seohyun in her room, not noticing the blush on the younger girl’s face at her enthusiasm. Sunny was obviously going to sleep with Taeyeon and Hyoyeon insisted they didn’t bother them. Yuri offered to sleep on the floor with some sheets while Jessica slept on the recliner with Sooyoung. Hyoyeon and Tiffany then shared the couch and all the girls said good night to each other.

In Seohyun’s room after getting ready for bed, Yoona jumped into the mattress and made herself comfortable. Seohyun delicately turned off the light and made her way to the bed only to be pulled in by Yoona.

“Goodnight Hyunnie,” she whispered, wrapping her arm around the younger girl.

“Goodnight Yoona unnie,” Seohyun replied bashfully, enjoying the warmth given by the other girl. Wrapped in each other, the two girls easily found sleep.

Back in Taeyeon’s room however, the air was a little awkward. Sunny was standing by Taeyeon’s desk and looking out the window, contemplating on what Hyoyeon had talked about earlier. Taeyeon was sitting on her bed in one of Sunny’s huge shirts but no pants, tugging at the fabric underneath her and thinking about the same thing.

Sunny turned to Taeyeon first and the two made eye contact for the first time since they finished getting ready for bed. They held each other’s gaze, knowing exactly what was on their minds. Both girls felt shy and uncertain and neither was bold enough to make the first move.

Was their love supposed to be passionate like Taeyeon and Jessica’s? The more Taeyeon thought about it the more it disturbed her. The situation was clearly different. Back then there were suppressed feelings and a wide range of emotions due to misunderstandings and direct attacks. Taeyeon’s love for Jessica was huge and abundant and at the time she was so blinded with her passion that she just had to have her at that moment.

Was it so wrong not to feel the exact way with Sunny? The situation was clearly different but was it necessarily bad? Taeyeon’s heart did go faster when she was close to her. She did feel safe in her arms at all times and especially at night. She felt really happy whenever she kissed her cheek or her forehead or even those quick pecks on the lips. She never hungered for more, there was never that need.

It was just so obvious that the two were made for each other. They complimented each other and despite their small arguments they always made up. They understood each other perfectly and were the best of friends.

Sunny approached Taeyeon slowly, step by step, counting each intake of breath. She could hear Taeyeon go stiff and then exhale, expecting something to happen. Was she to make the first move?

Sunny was satisfied with the way they were. Maybe those…extra things required time? It did feel weird that they never were extremely intimate before. They weren’t innocent preteens or still blossoming. They were graduating soon, they were adults soon.

Maybe it was because the thought never crossed their minds before? They were so happy together that they never felt the need to express it so physically.

Perhaps if they were to just try then they’d know.

Sunny was standing before Taeyeon, her arms wrapping themselves around her neck. Taeyeon stared back at her with her own arms wrapping around Sunny’s waist. Sunny leaned down slowly, her heart racing as she approached the other girl’s lips.

They connected, their soft lips at first brushing against each other before pressing harder, more urgently. It seemed like it was going well, it seemed like it was kind of natural. Taeyeon opened slightly, giving permission for Sunny to enter. Her tongue slipped in timidly but once it made contact with Taeyeon’s the two separated.

Sunny took in a deep breath. Maybe they were just nervous? After all, this was their first time thinking about this kind of thing.

Their gaze broke but Taeyeon wasn’t having any of it. She wanted so badly to confirm her feelings for Sunny. First it was the lack of jealousy but now the lack of romantic passion. She needed to know if there was something wrong.

It was rare for Taeyeon to show much aggression to the public or to her friends or family. But when she was alone, when she was with Jessica oh the amount of fun they had. She wanted to be like that with Sunny, she wanted to try to be intimate with Sunny. The kiss was awkward but maybe it was just a first time thing. She wanted to try again.

She removed her shirt to reveal her almost body to Sunny. When the blonde turned back to Taeyeon she blushed immediately at the sight.

“Don’t stare,” Taeyeon muttered bashfully, almost feeling the need to cover up again.

Sunny had to admit it, “You’re beautiful.” The moonlight reflected off Taeyeon’s milky skin perfectly. It was so tempting to touch and Sunny took the opportunity to trace her fingers along the girl’s collarbone.

After taking another deep breath she removed her own top and leaned into Taeyeon another time. This time she fell into the girl when their lips made contact. This one felt a little less awkward as the two collapsed onto the bed.

This time Sunny opened for Taeyeon and waited for her entrance. When she entered, the two broke it off again.

Embarrassed, the two girls put their shirts back on and just sat in silence. They were frustrated at their current situation. They were frustrated with their confusing feelings, with their lack of passion, with the awkward atmosphere and with Hyoyeon for bringing it up.

“Why is this so hard?” Sunny mumbled.

Taeyeon sighed and crawled over to Sunny before wrapping her arms around her. The two best friends breathed into each other, trying to break the awkward air.

“Maybe we’re forcing it?” Taeyeon offered, rocking her body back and forth with Sunny.

“Maybe we forced it?” Sunny offered back.

Taeyeon bit her bottom lip and thought again. Maybe she was just too excited about Sunny’s return that the thought about being together was perfect. She was her best friend, of course she loved her, of course she liked her.

But they were missing that spark.

They were platonic and both girls wanted to slap themselves for not realizing it sooner. They were too caught up in Sunny’s game of tricking their best friends. They were too caught up in being together again.

They were meant to be. They were soul mates. But not in the romantic sense.

“Are we breaking up?” Sunny asked with a light chuckle.

Taeyeon broke their embrace and took Sunny’s hand, “But what about Sungmin?”

Sunny laughed, remembering that her alter ego’s main role was being Taeyeon’s boyfriend.

“We can just tell them the truth?” Sunny mentioned, shrugging.

“But what about all your plans?” Taeyeon asked a little loudly, surprised at Sunny’s sudden proposal.

Sunny shook her head, “No! No I mean, the truth about the relationship, not Sungmin. We can tell them we tried to be intimate but realized that it was awkward?”

Taeyeon nodded her head slowly before smiling a little, “I feel a little stupid about all this.”

Sunny just giggled and lay back down on the bed, “Feelings are stupid, it’s not our fault.”

Her best friend joined her and wrapped an arm around the shorter girl, “I wonder how the girls are going to take this?”

Sunny pondered for a moment before laughing again, “I bet Jessica will be ecstatic.”

“Oh yeah, Sooyoung too,” Taeyeon replied. It was hard to forget the tall girl’s love sick expression.

“Yah, stop with the Sooyoung thing!” Sunny cried, slapping Taeyeon playfully on the shoulder.

Taeyeon just laughed at Sunny, not saying out loud that she saw the girl’s face flush a little bit of pink. The two girls just giggled into each other, not minding at all the strange development from their relationship. Their arms found their way to each other’s sides again and it was clear again that althought being together was natural, it wasn’t in any way romantic.

And then Taeyeon frowned.

“What’s wrong Taengoo?” Sunny asked, pressing her forehead against Taeyeon’s.

“I was just thinking, do you really think Jessica still likes me?”

“And here I thought you were going to ask me to help you choose between Tiffany and Jessica,” Sunny responded, shaking her head at her friend’s complicated love triangle.

“Yah!” Taeyeon half whispered, half yelled, slapping Sunny playfully once again, “Tiffany is just one sided feelings that come in and out.” Her face grew serious, “Jessica is something else.”

Sunny sighed. She was a little relieved for not being around for all this Taeyeon and Jessica drama. She felt that it was almost annoying.

“Taengoo, how did you feel when you were with me?” the question was a little sudden and Taeyeon was clearly taken aback. Sunny stared at her seriously, urging her to be honest.

“I was really happy,” she started with a small smile, “I was with my best friend, my other half and everything felt normal and easy and I was looking forward to graduation for when you revealed yourself. I was having fun, I felt really comfortable because I love you.”

Sunny smiled widely at her response and nodded in agreement with everything.

“It was a really fun adventure and it felt good being with my best friend again,” Taeyeon finished before giving Sunny’s waist a pinch.

But the blonde girl’s expression grew a bit more serious again, “Now how did you feel with Jessica? And as a bonus, how do you feel when you’re alone with Tiffany?”

It was 2AM at this point but the girls didn’t feel the time on them at all. They had often stayed up all night talking back in middle school. Sunny was the only person Taeyeon could tell everything to and it was reciprocated. The two were truly best friends.

Taeyeon bit her bottom lip again in contemplation and Sunny could feel her tone change when she spoke up again.

“Jessica…Before we were together, when I had to hide everything it was really painful. I felt like I was suffocating but then when she told me how she felt I was liberated. Whenever I was with her I felt like all these feelings, all of these emotions were pouring out of me like a raging waterfall. She helped me breathe again and whenever I was with her everything felt right, everything felt perfect. I loved her so much and to hold her in my arms was like a dream, it was something else. And whenever we kissed I saw fireworks, I saw the moon, I saw the heavens open up. And whenever we made love I didn’t want it to end.”

Sunny would’ve teased Taeyeon by gagging at the sweetness of her words but she couldn’t. She was rubbing the girl’s back for she started to cry half way through her speech.

There was definitely a difference in the relationship they had and the relationship she had with Jessica. Sunny felt a little jealous and she was a little sad that things didn’t work out perfectly with Taeyeon. But then again it felt a little too easy for the two to be together like that. And it was better that they realized at that moment that they weren’t romantically interested in each other. Sunny wanted the passion that Taeyeon had in her words for Jessica.

“And with Tiffany,” Sunny almost forgot that there was someone else. “I don’t know, I always thought of her as a distraction from Jessica. We became really close and I learned to love so much of her. I love her pure heart, her creative mind and wow, she’s gorgeous. She’s too charming for her own good and everything she will ever ask me, I will do it. She makes me really happy too, but that’s what best friends are for right? I never really thought too much about her, about pursuing it because she hasn’t shown any interest back. Or well, everything she’s reciprocated seemed too good to be true and was probably just friendly on her part.”

Sunny nodded in understanding and wondered how Taeyeon could hide all of those feelings from everyone in the group and from herself. When they were together, it never seemed like Taeyeon had such feelings for the two girls but it might have been just the ignorance of being together.

“Whenever I’m alone with her, I feel like I’m floating, like anything is possible. My stomach gets butterflies and I feel like throwing up or something, I don’t know.”

“So she disgusts you?” Sunny joked, earning a laugh from her best friend.

“In any case, those feelings will have to go because they just won’t do,” Taeyeon sounded almost as if she was speaking to herself. “They’ll never be reciprocated so I guess I should just focus on my feelings for Jessica.”

“How do you think she’s going to react to all this?” Sunny asked, truly curious herself.

“It’s not like she’s going to come running to me or anything,” Taeyeon mumbled, not looking at Sunny anymore and almost thinking to herself. “We haven’t been together in a while but it’d be a lie to say that she doesn’t feel anything for me anymore.”

Sunny let out a long sigh, “You two are going to give everyone a head ache.”

Taeyeon let out a soft chuckle, “We give everyone too many headaches.”

The two trailed off into different conversation about how this change in events would change Sunny’s plans. It seemed that she was close enough to the group that it would’ve change Sungmin’s dynamic with them. And if they announced the break up together then there wouldn’t be any sense of bitterness or anger towards Sungmin from overprotective best friends.

It’d be weird and the two couldn’t help but feel sad for their break up, but it had to happen. The two were just glad that it wasn’t one sided and that it was just a misunderstanding of feelings. It was difficult after all when two people are so close. Love was a strange thing and it worked in mysterious ways. The two girls clearly still loved each other and would still remain the perfect duo, but there were other plans for their romantic lives.

The next morning, Sunny and Taeyeon were peacefully sleeping in each other’s arms. Hyoyeon, Yuri and Yoona were up early having passed out right away and found their way to Taeyeon’s room. They stood at the bedside, pillows in hand.

“They look so peaceful,” Yuri whispered sweetly, admiring the smiles on the couple’s face and their intertwined fingers.

“Not for long,” Hyoyeon and Yoona cooed in unison, preparing their special attack.

“GOOD MORNING!!!”
