My Secret Diary
Description
Nobody knows how revolution will take place in humanity but every man feels it clearly in himself ~Tolstoy
Right after the "Great War" a new political party has risen to power. At first they worked for the country's profit but soon they were consumed by greed. The corrupted politicians are working for their own interests leaving the rest of the population to die in poverty. For years they are exploiting their power to gain as much money as they can while using the Mass Media to cover up their crimes and turn the people into their puppets. Freedom does not exist and everyone is betraying the other to ensure his own safety.
A young girl starts writing in her diary about her life and her country. Through the pages of a notebook, Sunny describes her fears and her hatred, her friends and her enemies and her struggle to be free.
Based on the novel by George Orwell, 1984
Foreword
It’s almost 10.00 pm. The two girls are sitting in the kitchen waiting. They are both very young, only 6 and 5 years old. The clock strikes 10.
The younger of the two finally gets up and urges her sister to follow her to bed. She doesn’t budge. Just a little more. She pleads for a few more minutes. The minutes slowly turn to hours and they just keep on waiting. The sun starts rising and the light enters from the small window.
The older girl, Sunny, watches the dust dancing in the light. She looks at her little sister patiently waiting for her to admit the truth.
No, it can’t be. Mommy and daddy will come back. They will.
Daddy will come in and hug both of them. He’ll lift the “baby” of the family, as he often calls his youngest daughter, and he’ll swing her around. He’ll say that he is too old to do the same with Sunny because she’s too old now but he will give in when she starts pouting. Their mother will kiss them and tell them how much she loves them. She’ll put on her apron and head to the kitchen to cook. Then they’ll gather together to enjoy a family meal.
Sunny shuts her eyes as tightly as she can.
They will come back, they will. Just a few more minutes.
But they never come back. When the door opens, she runs to see her parents but instead two unknown men are standing in front of her. They say things that she doesn’t understand, her sister starts sniffling and she can’t hold it in any more. She starts crying, shedding all the tears that she held back the entire night. The men take them away from their home.
Sunny is walking back to the orphanage she’s been staying for the last sixteen years of her life. She doesn’t want to go back yet. Her roommates, Hyoyeon, Narsha and Nicole will surely be there and she just wants to be alone for now.
She looks absentmindedly at the buildings around her. Old buildings, ready to crumble down. She passes outside an antiques shop. She stops for a minute and looks at the stuff in the window: a broken doll, a gold watch, many old wooden furniture pieces and a stack of notebooks. Her eyes focus on the notebooks. They are very pretty, with a floral pattern as a cover.
Before she realizes it she finds herself in the shop asking to buy one. The old store owner smiles kindheartedly at her as she is paying.
What is she going to use it for?
She doesn’t know
Why not try keeping a diary?
What’s a diary?
Back in his days a lot of people used to keep diaries.
The old man is lost in his thoughts. Sunny doesn’t understand what a diary is but it’s in her nature to be curious. The next day she visits the public library and starts searching.
Finally, in a dictionary she finds what she was looking for:
Diary: A notebook containing one's personal thoughts, feelings, plans, attitudes, observations, and the like. Usually but not always kept private.
