The final turns out to be longer than I expected so I split it into two chapters. :)

14 years back

I got a call from Yoseob telling me that he wanted to meet. Its been quite awhile since I saw him since I have work and he’s too weak after going through dialysis everyday. Right after I got that call I went straight next door to meet him.

“I got news..” he said softly.

“W-what news? Is it about your illness?” I asked worriedly. He nodded. I gulped and just waited for him to continue.

“There is.. a kidney donor!” he said delightedly smiling widely at me. my jaw dropped to the floor.

“Serious? Are you really serious?” he nodded happily.

“Congrats Yoseob! I’m sure you’ll do fine!” he said, hugging him.

“But I’m scared Junnie.. I have to go through the operation.” He pouted.

“I know you can go through it. You’re strong. I just know it. Everything is going to be alright,” I said, patting his hand in mine.

Like I predicted, the operation went well and both Yoseob and the donor survived the transplant. Yoseob couldn’t move around much for a few weeks but after that, he was good as new. I’m happy to see him being his normal cheerful self again and playing around with Jae Hee.

I was having lunch with him one day and he was picking on his food when I decided to show him something I've kept for about weeks now. Okay no. Just days. I can't keep a secret from Yoseob for long. I took the small ring box and place it beside his plate. He took a glance at it and gasped exaggeratingly, covering his mouth. He looked up at me with wide eyes.

"Omo Junhyung! I do! Yes I do!" he said in a girly voice.

"Not you pabo-yah!" I said, smacking his head. He pouted but then chuckled afterwards.

"How should I know.. I thought you were proposing to me. You know this isn't a very romantic proposal. You're lucky I said yes even before you asked," he said, looking at the box and opening it.

"That's why its not for you. I'm going to propose to her," I said confidently, grinning from ear to ear.

"Well duh. Who else who you want to propose to? Your mum?" Yoseob rolled his eyes. I just laughed but kept quiet.

"So? When is it?" he looked up at me.

"When's what?"

"You showed me a ring, telling me it isn't mine, saying that you're gonna propose to her, and that's it? End of convo? Are you serious??" he said, raising an eyebrow.

I smiled sheepishly, scratching the back of my neck. "Erm. I'm going to propose right after Jihye is born. Kinda like a 'after labour present'? Is that what they call it?"

"Right. Interesting.. But of course it would definitely shock the nurses around her." Yoseob laughed. I just smiled, looking at the diamond ring in the box in Yoseob's hand.

"But you know Junhyung. If she rejects, which I'm sure she would not, don't be crazy okay? I don't want my bestfriend to end up in a mental hospital," he said.

"Yeah I know. I respect whatever decision she has. Although she did say she feel the same, maybe she's just not ready." Yoseob just nodded.

I rushed to the hospital when I got the call from Yoseob that Hyuna’s water broke. Lucky for me I just finished my last client.

As soon as I reached the hospital, I looked around for Yoseob. There he was, standing infront of the labour ward, pacing back and forth.

“Yoseob-ah, how is she?” I asked panicked. Right at that moment I heard a loud scream from inside. God it sounds painful.

“She’s already in the middle of giving birth. You can’t enter Junhyung-ah..” he said apologetically. Aish.. if only I was faster. Now I can only pray for her safety and Jihye’s. I thought I can be with her at this time. I guess its just not fated.

I just nodded and paced back and forth like Yoseob. My hands were shaking, my heart was beating faster than ever. Maybe this was what Jay felt when Hyuna was giving birth to Jae Hee. Yoseob stopped pacing and sat down. He told me to do the same but I just couldn’t. Not until I see Jihye and Hyuna. Jae Hee was still in school and Yoseob had kindly asked Yaeshin to take him to the hospital when he finishes.

After what seemed like hours, the sound of baby crying is heard. My head shot towards the door and I sigh in relief. Dr Lee soon came out along with some other nurses.

“Your baby girl is born Junhyung,” she said, smiling at me slightly. I smiled widely with Yoseob standing beside me. Although she’s not really my baby girl, but the happiness is just overwhelming.

“Can I see Hyuna now? How is she?” I asked, still smiling. Dr Lee’s smiled faded automatically and she turned her attention to the floor instead. This is not good.

She looked up and met my worried eyes. “I’m very sorry Junhyung. We couldn’t save her. She.. passed away right after giving birth to her baby.. I’m really very sorry..”

 No.. no this is not true. “No.. no you’re lying right? Its not funny I tell you” I said.

“I’m not, Junhyung..” she replied sorrowfully.

I constantly shook my head. “No no! She’s still alive! She has to be!” I ran passed the doctor and went inside the ward straight away. One of the nurses was about to cover her with a white cloth but stopped when she saw me barging in.

My steps got heavier each time I stepped closer to her lying body on the bed, unconscious. No maybe she’s sleeping. She can’t die. No Hyuna can’t die.

Finally I reached her side and took her hand with my trembling hands. I held and pressed her wrist slightly. The reality hit me like a big rock had been thrown to my face. My breathing got uneven.

“Hyuna wake up. Open your eyes. Hyuna jebal.. jebal baby.. open your eyes.. Hyuna wake up… I’m begging you..” I begged her with shaky voice. I her cheek softly, hoping she could wake up when she felt my warmth. My tears flow like there’s no tomorrow. I pursed my lips together, trying to hold it in but I just can’t.

“Hyuna jebal open your eyes.. jebal.. look look! I was going to propose to you. See here’s the ring..” I took out the ring from my pocket pathetically and trying to show her when her eyes are closed.

“Hyuna jebal… I waited.. I waited for you… don’t leave me now.. j-jebal… I love you..” I look pathetic but I really don’t care. Nothing else matters now.

“Hyuna you haven’t seen Jihye..” I turned and saw a nurse cradling Jihye in her arms. I signaled for her to come nearer to the bed and she did.

“See Hyuna.. look.. She’s beautiful. She’s beautiful just like you.. Hyuna open your eyes jebal.. you have to see her.. You have to see your baby girl…” I cried more, knowing that its really pointless to beg her.

“At least open your eyes for Jae Hee… He had just lost his father.. Jebal.. Don’t make him lose you too… jebal Hyuna..” My eyes, face, all are wet from my tears. I love her so much. She can’t leave me.. I waited for her 9 years…

I sobbed uncontrollably when suddenly I heard a voice that I wasn’t ready to hear yet.

“Omma!” Jae Hee came running happily into the ward and stepped beside me.

“Uncle Junhyung what’s wrong? Why are you crying?” he asked. I wiped my tears with the back of my hand and turned to him. I carried him up so that he can see Hyuna. I don’t have any words to say. What should I say?

“Jae Hee-ah.. omma…” I started slowly with my voice still trembling. I looked at his face and his happy face changed when he saw Hyuna’s pale face, and she was just lying there, motionless.

“Omma?” his voice started to tremble. His lips quivered and tears started rolling down his eyes.

“Jae Hee.. omma just..” I tried talking again but failed when he started shouting.

“Ahni! Ahni! Omma cannot go like appa! No uncle Junhyung! Bring omma back! Bring omma back!” he shouted, shaking vigorously in my arms, bawling loudly.

I hugged him close to me tightly, couldn’t help but cry along with him.

“Omma~! Omma~!” Jae Hee cried continuously, yelling out ‘omma’. He hugged her tightly, as if showing that he doesn’t want to let her go.

Yoseob came behind me and held my shoulder. “Jun-ah.. They have to cover her..” he said softly. From his voice, I know he had been crying too. I briefly nodded and kissed Hyuna on her temple one last time before taking Jae Hee with me.

“Saranghae Hyuna..” I whispered.

I was struggling to take him away since he was really holding onto Hyuna tightly but eventually I manage to bring him out. I had to soothe him outside since he won’t stop crying. I don’t blame him, really. He had the right to. I just don’t want the staffs there to complain about him. I would just lose it and maybe land a few punches up someone’s face.
