Today is Hyuna’s first checkup for her pregnancy. I have work afterwards but I insist in sending her. I parked my car and we went in the hospital.

We waited for our number to be called after registering Hyuna’s name at the counter. I wonder what they check during pregnancy checkups. The only thing I know is when they move a certain control on the mother’s stomach and the baby appear in the tv. Ultra-v scan is it?

My phone rang as I was fiddling with it. “Yeoboseyo?”

“Junhyung-ah, you have two clients this afternoon. Do you remember or must I remind you again?” Hana’s voice was heard at the other end of the line.

“Oh Hana-yah. Yeah I remember. Since when do I forget my appointments?  Don’t worry I’ll be there on time,” I replied.

Hyuna turned to me as I talked on the phone. “Are you sure? If you’re not here 10 minutes before the time, I will tell the client that you promise a treat at a 5-star restaurant ara?” she chuckled. I shook my head and rolled my eyes.

“Yeah yeah. I’ll be there. I’m hanging up now. Annyeong~” I smiled and hang up. I turned to Hyuna.

“I told you not to follow me Junhyung-ah..” she whined.

“I won’t be late,” I reassured her. It was our turn and I walked into the gynaecologist’s room with Hyuna. We bowed slightly to the doctor that was sitting on her swivel chair.

“Oh please take a seat. I’m Dr Lee,” she said with a warm smile, gesturing to the two seats infront of her desk.

She read some documents on her desk. “This is your.. 2^nd child?” she asked.

Hyuna smiled. “Yes”

She looked up from her papers and smiled. “So I assume you know everything that you need to know in handling a pregnant wife right, Mr Park?” she said.

Me and Hyuna froze in our seats. Okay this is awkward. Not to make it an awkward situation for the doctor also, I replied.

“Umm.. I’m not.. her husband,” I said carefully. Dr Lee’s face was shocked for a second.

“Oh I’m sorry. My mistake. Where’s your husband Mrs Park?” she asked politely, looking at Hyuna.

I glanced over at Hyuna and she looked down slightly. “Just call me Hyuna. My husband just.. passed away. Few weeks ago.”

She gasped, covering . I don’t blame her. Who wouldn’t be shocked?

“Omo I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.” Hyuna shook her head slightly, saying that its okay.

“I’m sorry to ask, but since I’m your private gynae, I have to know. Who is taking care of you now? Are you living alone?” she asked with a hint of worry in her voice.

I just looked down. I’m not sure if I’m supposed to answer it or does Hyuna want to answer it herself.

“I’m.. um.. living with him,” she said, gesturing towards me. I glanced up to look at the doctor. She nodded and thought for awhile. Probably thinking of more questions. I’ve never felt so uncomfortable before. She would probably think that I’m taking advantage of Hyuna’s fragile situation. I my lips nervously.

“What is your relationship with Hyuna, if I may ask?” she asked politely. May ask? What if I say you can’t huh?

“I’m her… close friend. We’ve known each other since highschool,” I said, glancing at Hyuna once in awhile, making sure I didn’t say the wrong things. She just nodded while I talked, as though agreeing with me. Well it is true. Just that there is a big 9 year gap in between the highschool years. But she doesn’t need to know that.

“Oh wow.. that’s a long friendship. And your name?” she asked, clicking her pen.

“Yong Junhyung,” I said. She wrote down something on her document, which I assume is my name. She suddenly stopped writing and looked up to me.

“Yong Junhyung? You don’t happen to be a professional photographer do you?” she asked.

“Err yes I am a photographer. How’d you know?” I curiously asked, frowning slightly.

“Ah so its you! My younger sister works for you. You know, Hana? Lee Hana?”

My mouth opened slightly. Wow what a small world. “Yeah. So that’s your sister..” I nodded.

The whole getting-to-know situations ended when she started asking Hyuna a few questions regarding her health and how her pregnancy has been. She also advised Hyuna to take healthy meals as it may affect her pregnancy. Knowing that it is my first time taking care of a pregnant woman, she gave me tips that I could follow.

“And also Hyuna, you cannot be too stressed or tired. In one way or another it will affect the child.” Hyuna nodded. After all the advise and talking, we thanked her and walked out of the room.

“That was fast,” I said.

She chuckled slightly. “How long do you think it’ll be?” I pouted and shrugged.

I knocked on Yoseob’s door while Hyuna went into my apartment. I could hear Jae Hee’s voice inside, laughing happily. As Yoseob opened the door, I smiled.

“Junhyung-ah you’re back!” Yoseob grinned. Jae Hee ran to Yoseob and hugged his leg, peeking from behind.

“Uncle Junhyung!” he said and smiled cutely. It seems that he had fun with Yoseob. We had asked him whether he wanted to stay with Yoseob or follow us to the hospital for Hyuna’s checkup. We were relieved when he wanted to stay with Yoseob.

“Did you have fun with Uncle Yoseob, Jae Hee?” I asked, bending a little.

“Yes!” he nodded in excitement. I chuckled.

“But it’s time to go home now Jae Hee. Omma’s waiting for you,” I said, stretching out my hand. He ran to me and grabbed my hand tightly. I carried him while waiting for Yoseob to take his bagpack.

Yoseob came back with the bag and passed it to me. “Annyeong Jae Hee! We play again next time okay?” he said cheerfully, waving his hand. He nodded and gave an eyesmile.

“Thanks man for looking after him. I owe you one,” I said to Yoseob.

“Nah.. its nothing. I enjoy being with him. You owe me nothing.” I smiled and nodded.

I took Jae Hee’s small hand and waved it to Yoseob. “Say annyeong Uncle Yoseob~”

“Annyeong Uncle Yoseob!” he said.

We went inside the apartment and as soon as I put him down, he ran to the bedroom looking for Hyuna. I just smiled and locked the door. I went to my room to gather some things and took my bike keys.

“Uncle Junhyung, where are you going?” Jae Hee said, peeking in my room as I slung my bag.

I turned to see him holding on Hyuna’s hand. “I’m going to work Jae Hee-ah. Take care of omma arasso?” I smiled, pinching his chubby cheeks. He grinned.

We walked to the door and I gave Jae Hee a peck on the cheek before heading out. I smiled at Hyuna and she smiled back. “Are you going to be home for dinner?” she asked.

“Yup! Are you cooking?” I smiled expectantly.

“Neh..” she smiled. I’m looking forward to it.

“If you want to go out, let Yoseob accompany you okay? He has a car so you don’t have to walk or carry heavy things,” I said. Her face shows uneasiness and I know exactly what she’s thinking.

“He’s more than happy to help Hyuna. You’re not a trouble at all. Stop thinking that you are,” I said softly, raising my eyebrows slightly. She looked up at me and smiled slightly. I knelt down and looked at Jae Hee.

“Call me or Uncle Yoseob if there is anything okay? Just press the number 1 on that phone if you want to call me.” Jae Hee nodded and smiled. I pat his head lightly and stood up.

I bid them goodbye and walked off. I hope nothing goes wrong.
