“Appaaaaa!!!!!!!”

I woke up abruptly from my sleep, hearing the piercing scream from Jihye. I quickly ran into her room and saw that she was sitting on her bed. My eyes widened when I saw the reason why she shouted.

“Appa appa! What’s wrong??” Jae Hee asked in panic as he ran towards the room from the kitchen. Before he could see inside I stopped him quickly.

“Jae Hee stop there! Call Auntie Yaeshin now!” I demanded.

“But-“

“NOW JAE HEE! GO!” I shouted and he immediately ran outside to call Yaeshin that was living next door.

I looked at the bed stained with blood where Jihye was sitting. I know what happened, I just don’t know what to do. Gosh I’m a father! Not a mother!

“Appa what happened? Why is there blood??” Jihye asked me worriedly.

“Jihye-ah, we’ll wait for Auntie Yaeshin arasso? But you’re okay. Don’t worry..” I tried to calm her down.

“Oppa what happen??” Yaeshin asked as she ran into the house. I didn’t have to explain when she saw the incident herself. She stopped Jae Hee just in time before he could come into the room. Boys shouldn’t see this.

“Yah.. oppa.. Can you not scare the hell out of me next time?” Yaeshin said, relieved that it wasn’t a big emergency.

“But it scared the hell out of me! I’m a guy for goodness sake,” I defended myself. Yaeshin shook her head and told me that she’s taking some necessary things from her apartment first. Me and Jae Hee waited outside while Yaeshin helped Jihye to clean up.

After everything was done, she walked into the living room where me and Jae Hee were. “Oppa, now you have to remember to buy sanitary pads when you go shopping. Ara?”

My eyes widened hearing what she just said. “B-but.. I’m a guy Yaeshin-ah..” I said softly.

“So? You’re a father and I don’t see anything wrong for a father to buy sanitary pads for his daughter,” she said matter-of-factly.

“Arasso…” I said, looking down as if I was just being scolded. She was about to go out when she remembered something.

“Ah! Another thing. For the first few days, Jihye may have menstrual cramps. Give her a warm pack and some pills for the cramps to help ease the pain. You hear?” she said. I nodded and smiled.

“Thanks Yaeshin-ah. I really don’t know what to do if you’re not here,” I said sincerely. She simply smiled and went back to her apartment.

“Appa, I’m 18. I know about this already. There’s no need to hide it from me..” Jae Hee said.

“I know you know. But you shouldn’t see it. Even I hadn’t seen it before. Do you know how panicked I was just now?” I said. He chuckled and shook his head.

I went to Jihye’s room and saw her lying on her bed. I sat by the edge of her bed and she smiled at me. “Are you okay sweetheart?”

“Neh appa.. Sorry for scaring you,” she said apologetically.

“Its okay. Do you have any stomach cramps? Auntie Yaeshin said you might have menstrual cramps for the first few days.” She remained silent for awhile as if feeling whether she has cramps or not. She shook her head happily.

“That’s good. Join your brother for breakfast. He’s outside,” I said. She sat up and made her way to the dining table. I sighed in relief and went back to my room.

I sat by the edge of the bed and picked up the photo frame that was on the bedside table. I just stared at it, caressing the frame with my thumb. If only you’re here.. things won’t be so difficult. I sighed and placed her photo back on the table.

14 years back

We were waiting outside the doctor’s room again for the next checkup. I was quite excited for this appointment since we’re going to see little Jihye in Hyuna’s stomach. I didn’t show my excitement though.

“So how was work just now?” she asked, starting a conversation.

“Nothing interesting.. Normal newlyweds, shy to even pose for some of the pictures. You know the normal things I always told you,” I said. Its not entirely true though. My client actually asked why I was smiling throughout the whole photoshoot even when they are quite difficult to handle since they don’t really know how to pose for pictures. I told them truthfully that I was excited for the checkup later in the day. Luckily they didn’t see me as some weirdo and they were happy for me, which makes me more smiley.

She nodded slowly. Now for my turn to ask her.

“Hyuna, can I ask you something?” I said, taking her hand slowly.

“Hmm?”

“Why do you wear this again?” I asked, looking at the bracelet that I gave her during highschool. She was wearing it again.

“Erm.. I want to go back to highschool times again,” she said and chuckled softly. Go back to highschool again. Back to what we once were.

I just smiled and let go of her hand gently. The nurse called us in and we went inside. The room was different since Hyuna needed to go through ultra-scanning.

After scanning and seeing the ultra-scan through the monitor, the doctor bit her lip slightly. Hyuna and I were just smiling looking at the monitor but our smiles faded when we saw the doctor’s change in expression.

We sat at her desk as she went through some papers on her table. I heard her sigh softly and removed her glasses to look at us. This doesn’t seem good.

“Is there anything wrong Doctor?” I asked.

“Hyuna, Junhyung, there seem to be some kind of complication with your baby..” she started slowly. I felt Hyuna took my hand under the table and I brought our hands to my lap. I have to be strong for her. No matter what happens.

Hyuna didn’t even want to ask. She just waited quietly for the doctor to continue.

“Your baby.. has.. Amniotic Band Syndrome.” What’s that?

“Her right arm is not fully formed but all her other organs are healthy,” she said. Hyuna gasped softly and covered . I know she wanted to prevent herself from tearing up but she failed to do so when I saw her tear flowing down her cheeks. I squeezed her hand in mind, trying to give my strength to her.

“You can still choose to abort this baby but it will be quiet dangerous,” the doctor said.

“No. I will never think of aborting,” Hyuna said firmly. The doctor just nodded.

We went out slowly, trying to absorb the details that doctor told us. Why do all these things have to happen to Hyuna? What did she do wrong? She doesn’t deserve all these.

The moment I closed the doctor’s door, she turned to me and hugged me tight. I was shocked for a fraction of a second but hugged her back almost instantly. She sobbed uncontrollably on my chest, resting her head at the crook of my neck. I her back slowly and gently as we stood there.

“Hyuna.. ” I said softly as we sat quietly in the car. She cried on and on, shutting her eyes. Seeing her in that condition reminds me when Jay died. She must have been this sad then.

Finally she took one deep breath and let it out slowly. She took the tissue that I gave her and wiped her tears away. She turned to me.

“Junhyung, I promise you, this is the last time I’m going to cry because of this. I’m going to be strong for my baby,” she said.

“Crying doesn’t mean you’re weak Hyuna..” I said.

“I know. But if I cry its as if I’m always sad about it and don’t accept that my baby had to end up like this. I accept it and will bring her up normally just like how I brought up Jae Hee.”

I smiled at her confidence and strong-will. She will always have my support. No matter what happens, I will always be by her side.
