Chapter 19

Seoul High School for the Gifted
“Yah, yah, yah, yah, yah!” Haneul yelled out as she was pulled away from MinJung just before she could enter the café. “Jamkkamanyo!” The figure, who she deducted was indeed a man refused to stop despite her pleas and brought her in the opposite direction. “I need my chocolate cake!” Haneul didn’t worry one bit that she was being kidnapped by some stranger. All she wanted was her daily dose of sugar.

“Don’t worry, yeppeo. There’s going to be a lot of sweets where we’re going.” He didn’t even have to say his name but Haneul knew who he was. There was only one person in the entire world who called her “yeppeo” and you all know who he is. I don’t even have to tell you. His smile put a small blush on her face. The flirting helped a little, too. “Aww, is my yeppeo blushing for me?”

“Shut up.” Haneul slapped his shoulder playfully before turning away and burying her face in her hands in embarrassment. How else would you feel is someone constantly flirted with you? “LeeTeuk-ssi, sometimes you get really annoying and I can’t stand it.” She confessed. A frown took over the smile on his face and his nose scrunched up.

“-ssi? Why –ssi? We’ve met enough times for us to be comfortable around each other. Why do you still call me formally?” LeeTeuk’s head tilted a little to the side and Haneul couldn’t help but think it looked a little cute. He looked like a confused puppy. She chuckled a bit. “I already have a nickname for you. You should have a nickname for me.”

“Ahem. Excuse me mister LeeTeuk-ssi but we have only met three times before this. This is only our fourth time meeting up. I don’t think we know enough about each other to be comfortable around each other.” Haneul responded in an as-a-matter-of-fact tone with a smirk on her face only making LeeTeuk smirk back.

“Ahem. Excuse me yeppeo.” LeeTeuk copied Haneul. “We have only met three times but one of those times was in your bed if you can remember clearly.” Haneul turned away when she felt a blush come upon her face again. “I have also walked you home before. I think that is more than enough evidence for us to be comfortable around each other.”

“Whatever.” Haneul retorted. She obviously lost the battle. Haneul wasn’t as good with words as Melody. She didn’t have a comeback so she just said the first thing off the top of her head. However, it was weak. LeeTeuk did a small fist pump to celebrate his victory while Haneul gave him a little push. “Shut up.”

“Okay, so for my nickname, I want something that matches yours.” He kept leading the way to wherever he planned to take Haneul while his fake beard underneath his chin. His eyes narrowed together while his bottom lip jutted out and he looked to the side. Haneul turned the other way to suppress her laugh. “What?”

“I swear look like a complete idiot right now.” She couldn’t hold it in anymore and burst out laughing. She leaned on the nearby lamppost while clutching her stomach to support herself. “You’re nickname should be pabo.” LeeTeuk scowled at the thought.

“No! If you’re yeppeo then I should be motji! I can’t be pabo if you’re yeppeo. It doesn’t match.” He complained. “You have to call me motji.” He said firmly with a halt. Haneul, because of his sudden stop, would have crashed onto his back if it weren’t for her ninja evasive skills.

“Whatever, pabo.” She spat back just to get a kick out of it. She wanted to get him back for her fail attempt last time. She did a little victory dance when she saw his jaw drop and he went speechless. LeeTeuk gave a little glare because now it was his time to fail at a comeback. Haneul might have said almost the exact same thing as before but “pabo” made such a big blow to LeeTeuk’s pride.

“We’re here.” LeeTeuk said with a little disdain still in his voice even though he was trying to change the subject. He pointed at the café in front of them, but it wasn’t just any café. It was a cat café. It was a funny sight to see LeeTeuk frowning while looking at all the cute cats. I mean, who could frown at a kitten?

“Wah! A cat café! Really? Let’s go!” Haneul dragged LeeTeuk into the café with almost as much energy as when she was going to go into the other café. Haneul was going to do anything just to get her hands on one of those adorable little kittens. “I love cats!” She shouted out when she walked in and all the cats swarmed to her feet. She bent down to pet them.

“What have I gotten myself into?” LeeTeuk said out loud but in his head he couldn’t help but swoon over how cute she looked.

--

“WooHyun!” ShinYoung called out from the kitchen while looking around in the fridge and cabinets for something to eat. She wanted an actual meal. In the hospital, the food she ate was okay, but face it, it was hospital food. Nothing beats a good, home-cooked meal. “Where did all the food in the fridge go? I’m sure we had a watermelon here!” ShinYoung gazed confusedly at the empty kitchen.

“Oh,” WooHyun popped in with his hand rubbing the back of his neck while smiling awkwardly. “Well, in order to clean up the dorm I got all my friends to come over and help and I sort of paid them in food so now we  kind of don’t have any, yea. I knew I forgot something.” He looked down at the ground while mumbling the last part.

ShinYoung giggled. She saw WooHyun’s efforts to be a better roommate but, like that Hannah Montana song, nobody’s perfect. He couldn’t turn into perfect roommate overnight. It took time but she admired that he at least tried. At least he wasn’t lazing around the sofa eating pizza all day anymore.

“It’s fine.” ShinYoung smiled understandingly. “I’ll just go to the cafeteria or something to get some food.” She walked over to her room and grabbed her phone, wallet, and school I.D. off the desk and one of her handbags hanging on the hook behind her door so she could put her stuff in there. Slipping on her heels, she made her way to the front door.

“Wait!” WooHyun ran up to her dressed up to leave as well. “You shouldn’t go alone. I’ll come with you.” He slipped on his sneakers and put on his sweater while motioning me towards the door. I gave a nod and he followed me out but quickly found his way next to me as we went down the stairs.

“Ahhhhhh.” ShinYoung took a big breath in and then back out the moment they made it outside. “I’ve been cooped up in that hospital for was too long. I love the smell of fresh air.” She took another sniff. “It smells like it’s going to rain. I love the rain.” She smiled and ran up ahead with her arms spread out, just enjoying the fresh air.

WooHyun slightly chuckled. “Where do you want to go?” He caught ShinYoung’s attention as she stopped running and turned to him. “The cafeteria is closer but I’m not sure if they’re open right now since it’s not dinner time yet. I know of a few restaurants further up ahead but they’re kind of farther away.”

“That’s fine.” She nodded and turned to take a big whiff of the air again. ShinYoung loved being outside and having to stay in the hospital all day was like hell for her. “I’m kind of craving samgyupsal right now. All the food they served at the hospital was really healthy and bland. I need something fatty and salty.”

“Okay, there’s a restaurant that served really good, fresh sampyupsal near here.” WooHyun walked up next to her and led the way. Slipping his hand into hers, he brought her to a quiet area that didn’t have many people. ShinYoung was confused because all around her were houses. There wasn’t a restaurant or house in sight.

“WooHyun, where are we going? I don’t see a samgyupsal restaurant here.” She didn’t even realize that he was holding her hand. She was more focused on the growling her stomach made and whether or not she would get her food. She was really hungry and she needed to eat before Haneul, MinJung, and Melody found out she was missing because technically the doctor told her not to eat that many fatty foods which translated to them as not eating any fatty foods.

“Don’t worry, it’s right there.” He pointed at a small restaurant that wouldn’t have been found if he didn’t point it out. It was one of those placed that only the locals would know of, hidden among the other buildings. Walking in, they were warmly greeted by an old man along with what looked like his son waiting the tables.

“Ahjussi, two servings of samgyupsal please!” He yelled out to the back where the ahjussi was sitting.

“Neh!” He yelled back while walking to the kitchen.

“No, ahjussi! Make that three servings and extra rice and gochujang please!” She corrected before giving WooHyun a smile.
“Looks like someone is hungry.” He joked, nudging her a bit.

“Oh shut up.” She blushed, walking to a table.

--

Jina was out on “her” hill again. She loved that place. It was far enough so that she couldn’t hear the noisy sounds of the city but close enough that she could still see everything. It gave her a place to think, to let go. Maybe it was the serenity of it all but if she could she could live her whole life there, separated from everything.

Even though she was trying to forget everything, Aidan’s words kept haunting her. Every single time her mind started to wander away and she dozed off, Aidan popped up out of nowhere yelling at her again and she woke up again with a frown on her face. It happened probably eight times already and she was sick of it.

She couldn’t blame Aidan, though. It wasn’t his fault. He was telling her the truth. If anything, it was her fault for constantly pushing others away and living her life the way she was, closed from everyone else. She wanted to blame her parents, too, for constantly putting her down and treating her like nothing but she knew she couldn’t. They were her parents and technically it was her fault for listening to their words.

Cradling her face in her hands while burying it in her knees, it hit her that Aidan was right. She couldn’t stay like that for forever. If she did, she would end up and old lady with fifty cats. That would be ridiculous. She was lonely and abandoned. If she didn’t do anything, she would stay lonely and abandoned.

She realized that that’s what she had to do. She had to do something, something that could get her life straight. She needed to do something to make it up to JaeSun, Aidan, and lastly YongHwa, something that would bring them back to her. But the thought popped up; after all she did to them, would they still accept her?

Well, that was a chance she was willing to take. If she went up to them and they rejected her, it’s not like she would lose anything. She had nothing to begin with. It’s not like she could lose their friendship. That was already long gone the time she rejected them. At least trying wouldn’t hurt.

So, with a deep breath, she collected all her courage and went to look for Aidan. She had to talk to him first. He was the one that got her to actually break out of her shell. She knew that he was Haneul’s new slave and since she would probably order him to make her something chocolate, she figured he would still be somewhere near the dorm.

The walk there was terrifying. What would she say? What should she do? Jina had no idea. She was always known for being impulsive, the complete opposite from her sister who acted on logic and reason, probably one of the many reasons why her parents favored her sister, and this was one of the few times she wished she was more logical. Her impulsiveness led her to be stuck in these situations where she just didn’t know what to do. It was probably one of the reasons why she pushed JaeSun, YongHwa, and Aidan away in the first place.

Just as she got there, she saw a familiar masculine figure turn the corner and start to walk away toward the guys’ dorms. Jina froze, not knowing what to do. The thoughts in her head were running a million miles an hour, telling her body to move and speak yet it wouldn’t respond.

“A-Aidan!” She desperately let out even though he was out of sight. She waited a while but there was no response. Crouching down, she felt broken. She lost her chance. She didn’t know the next time she would be able to convince herself to do this again. Maybe it wasn’t her fate to make friends.

“Yea?” She heard a voice. “You okay?” Looking at the ground in front of her, she saw a pair of black convers. She lifted her head up, only to be met by Aidan’s confused face, a rare face not many people saw considering he was extremely smart and knew pretty much everything. She jumped up and wrapped her arms around his neck, hugging him tightly. He stumbled, taking a few steps back, surprised at Jina’s sudden action. “Woah. What was that for?”

“Thank you.” She whispered quietly. Her eyes were shut tight but a few tears still managed to leak out of the corners. “For not giving up on me, and I’m sorry for acting like such a .” She confessed. It was the first time she ever made a confession like that. She usually kept all her feelings trapped within her but with her recent understanding, she realized she needed to change.

‘Y-you’re welcome.” He said in a somewhat shy voice. Aidan had gotten more comfortable around Jina but it was one of the first times he’s had such intimate contact with a girl. He took a big gulp and hesitantly hugged her back, his hands slightly shaking. “And don’t worry. I forgive you.”

--

Okay, so maybe deciding to go jogging with JaeSun wasn’t that great of an idea. Truthfully, I hate athletic sports because I hate sweating. Now, imagine jogging with JaeSun, the health freak, on a hot Korean summer day. Summer in Korean is terrible. Actually, terrible is an understatement. Summer there is horrifying.

KyuHyun wasn’t used to JaeSun’s active lifestyle. When JaeSun told him that they would be running a quarter of the perimeter around campus, KyuHyun thought it would be a piece of cake (don’t tell Haneul. It’s just an expression) but what he did realize was that the campus was huge.

The dorms were directly at the center and to the north were all the musical buildings. To the east were the performing arts buildings and in between them was the auditorium. The south held all the science and math buildings and the west was the section for liberal arts. Not to mention there were different sports facilities scattered around the area.

KyuHyun ran so fast, he finished about half a mile in five minutes. KyuHyun definitely had speed but where he flourished in speed, he lacked in endurance. After the five minutes, he grew tired and could no longer keep up with JaeSun and ended up taking a lot of breaks to catch his breath.

“Hold on, hyung.” KyuHyun said as he bent down to support his weight on his knees. He lifted the collar of his t-shirt to wipe the sweat off his forehead and took a big gulp of his bottled water so that it was now empty. He took a few deep breaths to slow down his heart rate before speaking again. “I can’t anymore.”

“Dude, the one mile mark is right there! You’re almost finished!” JaeSun encouraged, not willing to accept defeat. He didn’t want KyuHyun just to give up. He pulled KyuHyun up and dragged him to the front of the science lab. For a regular person, it might have been a little hard to drag someone a good 400 meters but it was easy for JaeSun even though he wasn’t brawlic. He was just toned.

Once they were there, JaeSun let go of KyuHyun making him collapse on the ground. There were no words, no witty remarks, no complaints that came out of his mouth, just silence and the sound of deep breathing. KyuHyun had his eyes closed and his right arm over them as his chest went up and down at a violent speed.

“Dude, the floor is dirty. People walk their dogs there and who knows if they took a crap where you’re laying down.” JaeSun joked while chuckling but he earned no response from the exhausted KyuHyun. He looked around, getting a little bored from the lifeless KyuHyun. He wanted to go around jogging some more but he didn’t want to leave KyuHyun, knowing that KyuHyun had never been to the science department since he never had to. JaeSun on the other hand was more familiar with the area since he would jog there almost every day and had dropped Jina there occasionally for her tutoring session with Aidan back when they still talked.

In the distance, JaeSun heard a familiar tune. He never heard the melody before but he was completely positive that he heard that style before. “Dude, do you hear that?” KyuHyun didn’t say anything and just waved off JaeSun. It was bothering him. He knew he heard that person play before. The only problem was that he didn’t know where the person was so he couldn’t confirm. Then it hit him.

It was her.

“Dude, I’m leaving now. Find your own way back.” He called out while running away to wherever he heard the music playing. Flabbergasted, KyuHyun sat up straight, then immediately regretted it when the blood didn’t flow to his head fast enough and his vision became blurry.

“Woah.” He said and waited a second for it to pass. He looked up and JaeSun. “Dude! How am I supposed to get back? I don’t even know where I am!” He yelled out hoping JaeSun would be near enough to at least hear him but unfortunately it was his turn to get no answer. Defeated, he laid back down onto the ground. “Whatever. Yolo.”

Back at JaeSun’s side, he was running around like a maniac, looking through every path and behind every building and tree he could find. He had no luck until he found a clearing surrounded by trees and a single boulder in the middle. On the boulder, he saw his mystery girl. He recognized the long, brown hair and the red acoustic guitar. She was short and skinny, from what he could see but it was a little hard to judge since she was sitting down with her back to him. Either way, he knew he found her.

--

MinJung waited at the café hoping Haneul would show up after her sudden disappearance. It had already been more than an hour that MinJung was there and she was sort of getting tired of waiting. Yei-Soo let her sit in the corner by the window so she had a nice view of everyone outside.

Her table was decorated with two empty plates, one that used to hold a few white chocolate macadamia nut cookies and one that used to hold a slice of strawberry cheesecake, and a half-empty cup of caramel mocha iced latte. She had her right elbow on the edge of the table and rested her head on her palm as she uninterestedly stirred her coffee with the straw.

She was ready to give up waiting. She didn’t thing Haneul would have gotten into any trouble. She knew how to take care of herself. Knowing Haneul, MinJung thought she probably just got distracted by a store that sold a lot of cute stuff or something. Either way, MinJung was getting ready to give up.

“Yei-Soo unni!” MinJung called out. Yei-Soo, who was waiting around to tend to the customers came over with a small notebook and pen at hand thinking MinJung would be taking another order. “Can I have my check now, please?” Yei-Soo gave a nod but half way back to the cash register before turning back.

“Ah, someone already paid for your check.” Yei-Soo told her. MinJung responded by tilting her head in confusion. Yei-Soo let out a sly giggle before answering. She leaned in closer to MinJung’s ear and whispered. “You see that blonde guy in the back with the chocolate cake? He paid for your bill.” She walked away wiggling her eyebrows at her dongsaeng who slightly blushed in response.

MinJung stood up to leave. She put on her back pack and then slipped her phone, that was sitting neatly on the table, back into her pocket, but not before looking at the time and realizing she still had a lot of time to kill before her next class. She was so bored but didn’t know what to do.

ShinYoung was probably in her dorm and she didn’t want to disturb her and WooHyun’s “alone time.” Haneul was missing and she hadn’t seen Melody the entire day so she didn’t know where she was. She had no idea where JaeSun, KyuHyun, or Aidan were and, truthfully, Jina still scared her a tiny bit.

She took a deep breath before walking towards the door. She was about to leave when she felt a tap on her shoulder so, like the natural reaction, she turned around to see who it was and she was surprised to see Zelo standing there.

“Oh, annyeonghaseyo Zelo-ssi.” MinJung said politely. Zelo gave a small smile before looking down at his shoes to avoid eye contact and probably to cover up the blush on his cheeks, too. She could tell he was struggling to find words to say when his mouth opened but then closed back again a few times.

“Annyeonghaseyo, MinJung-ssi.” He said shyly while playing with his fingers. He started biting his bottom lip when he realized he forgot what he was going to say and then there was another silence until he managed to get out what he wanted to. “Um, I have a lot of time before my next class. If you don’t have a class soon I was just wondering if you wanted to hang out or something.”

“Oh, well, um, I guess so.” She agreed. Zelo’s head shot up and he flashed her a smile. He seemed so happy, as if he just won the lottery and someone gave him one billion won as the prize. “I don’t really have anything else to do and my next class isn’t for a while.”

“Okay!” Zelo cheered up. You would never guess he was that quiet boy in the corner. If you saw him now, you would think he was a hyper little chipmunk all the time. He gently grabbed MinJung’s wrist and pulled her towards the door. “Let’s go.” He urged. “There are a lot of things we can do and I don’t want to run out of time.”

“Sure.” She replied, shyly, not knowing how to react to Zelo’s sudden burst of energy. She let out a few giggles at his excitement but didn’t say anymore, just wanting to watch him jump around smiling everywhere. It was amusing, like when you would watch a little kid jump around and play when they got to the park.

She looked back at Yei-Soo just as Zelo was bringing her out the door and she mouthed “Good luck” and then “Don’t stay out too late.” MinJung rolled her eyes then glared before mouthing back “Shut up.” MinJung could’ve sworn that as she walked outside with Zelo, she heard the faint sound of Yei-Soo’s laugh.

--

“Okay, the bell is about to ring.” Park seonsaengnim announced when he looked at the clock. “But as you know, I dismiss you, not the clock so you can only leave when you come up to me and act as a whale trapped on the shore trying to get back to the ocean but can’t because he, or she, is stuck.”

Melody rolled her eyes at the typical unconventional methods of Park seonsaengnim. If a new student came, they would have looked at him weirdly but everyone else had no reaction and treated it as if it was a normal assignment any teacher would give them. The only time they actually gave a reaction to his teachings was the one time he assigned them a paper and even then it was a strange topic. It was a paper on the effects carrots had on the human body.

As she neared the door, that Park seonsaengnim lingered around to watch the exiting students, Melody had to bite back a laugh by slightly chomping down on her cheek. At times, she questioned Park seonsaengnim’s methods but she knew that he had to have a reason for it. It’s not like he would make them act like that for his own enjoyment, right?

“So, you’re supposed to be a whale on the shore, right?” Melody didn’t even realize she made to the door already. She was too busy inwardly laughing and face palming at the sight of JongHyun letting go of his cool, chic image in exchange for a whaling aquatic mammal trapped while yelling for dear life. MyungSoo on the other hand gave off a cute vibe when he did it.

“Eww! No, that’s so gross!” Melody exclaimed with a disgusted look on her face. She finished up the expression by wrinkling her nose and sticking her tongue out. “Seriously? A whale? That’s so stupid! This whole class is stupid! It’s pointless. This is definitely not going to help us become better actors or actresses.”

“Are you questioning my methods?” Park seonsaengnim let out in an equally loud voice. His eye brows furrowed as he towered over her. Even though she was tall compared to most Koreans, he was still taller, making him more intimidating. Their raised voices drew attention from the class, since most of them hadn’t left yet, and the students who were in the midst of leaving and heard them from around the corner, including JongHyun and MyungSoo.

Yes and don’t even ask why. I bet a horse could teach us better than you could! Heck, we might as well have a horse as a teacher. All you do is order us around to do ridiculous things while you’re over there eating carrots! I’m surprised your skin hasn’t turned orange yet.” Melody spat back. She turned her back to leave while letting out a scoff. Park seonsaengnim looked like he was about to explode.

“Melody yang, please step over to the side. I need to have a word with you later.” The class’ eyes widened. This would be the second time Melody had made an outburst at a teacher yet this time it seemed so real. It wasn’t a joke like last time. “…about your excellent acting.” Park seonsaengnim smiled.

What? How did you know I was acting?” Melody’s arms fell to her side as if she was defeated even though she just got a compliment from her seonsaengnim. She was found out. The rest of the class’ mouth gaped open in disbelief. Were they just duped?

“I’m an acting teacher. I think I know the difference between acting and reality. Your improv is really good, though. You should think about being an improv actress. Improv isn’t that easy to pull off. It shows the true talents of an actor. Imagine comparing a rapper with a freestyle rapper.” Park seonsaengnim continued to blurt out endless amounts of compliments towards Melody.

Thank you.” She bowed ninety degrees before turning to leave. On the way out, she bumped into MyungSoo and his other half, JongHyun. MyungSoo clapped with a smile on his face while JongHyun just stood there with his arms crossed over his chest and a disinterested expression on like usual.

“That was really amazing, Melody.” MyungSoo praised. He elbowed JongHyun in the side. “Right, JongHyun? Don’t you have anything to say about Melody’s acting?” JongHyun shrugged then rolled his eyes.

“It was pretty good.” That put a smile on Melody’s face. She actually didn’t hear any unnecessary insulting remarks from JongHyun. MyungSoo breathed a sigh of relief that his bro and the girl he liked were actually starting to get along. “…for an amateur.” He finished with a smirk on his face.

Why you…” Melody was cut off when MyungSoo hugged her to keep her from attacking JongHyun viciously.

“I think I’m just going to walk Melody back to the dorm. You’re on your own, bro.”

Heyo~~~~~~~

So, I'm really sorry this was a few days late. I was busy with volunteer work and I am completely exhausted. Taking care of five-year-olds for three days straigh, twelve hours a day is so tiring especially when they ask you to give them a piggy back ride every five minutes. Sigh. I need a nap now. Zzzzzzzzz.

Also, I might not be able to update next week and I definitely won't be able to update the week after because next next week I'm going to Vermont to fix peoples' houses who were affected by this really bad hurricane that happened last year for the whole week so I won't have time to update then and next week I'm going to be preparing for the trip so I'm not really sure if I have time to write. I'll try but if anything I'll start working on the chapter and then finish ti up the Fri, Sat, or Sun I come back. Hopefully I'll be able to update next next Mon.

Chapter 32: Wait. So, if boys and girls can't be allowed, how can Woohyun and Shinyoung be together?? Because they are in a co-ed dorm...is that an exception? And sheeshus, Melody, just stop being so cranky will ya? Jonghyun and Myungsoo, you seriously gotta lighten up a bit more. Besides, Jonghyun isn't THAT bad...

And I love how Woohyun is so worried about le moi! XD Lol! Yes Woohyun, get jealous and fall in love!! XD ha ha ha, I'm just kidding!! Anyways...

I seriously forgot what I put onto my application. I don't even see it in my Blogs. lol XD and yes, let's NOT give Haneul chocolate because chaos with reign! And Jina, yes, but how?? And I'd love to have Aidan as a friend too!! Actually, I would love to have all of them as my friends! :))) Everyone just seems so out-of-this-world and yet down-to-earth - you know what I mean??

I'm so looking forward to the next chapter and gah! I feel like dying everytime I re-read everything!! XD Lol okay, I'm gonna go until next time!! ^____^ HWAITING!!!
