The Gangster Who Loved Me - Chapter 13
The Gangster Who Loved MeSunggyu panicked when he awoke early the next morning and discovered that Woohyun was not in bed where he should be. He searched the rest of the house calling out Woohyun's name, but all he received was silence. It saddened him that Woohyun would leave without a word, especially in the condition that he was in.
"Where have you been these days?" his friend asked taking a seat beside him at the bar. "And what is that you're drinking?" He picked up the drink for a closer look and then frowned in confusion. "Why would you come to a bar and drink tea?"
"I've been told alcohol is not good for my health," Woohyun replied.
"Next you're going to tell me you've quit smoking too," his friend joked, to which he did not respond. "Are you serious? What's going on with you?"
Woohyun hesitated a moment. "Can I ask a favour?"
After not hearing from Woohyun and having no way of contacting him, Sunggyu decided to reopened the stall in the hopes that maybe Woohyun would come by. As he sat there as usual, he was unaware of the biker watching him from the other side of the street.
At the end of the day as he made his way home, he heard the low rumble of an engine. His eyes lit up with excitement. He stopped and turned around. The biker also came to a halt.
"Woohyun?" Sunggyu asked.
The biker was silent.
Sunggyu's expression faltered, wondering why Woohyun was trying to avoid him. With a heavy heart he turned around and continued to walk, only to trip and stumble to the ground. The biker immediately ran over and helped him up.
There was a dejected expression on Sunggyu's face. The scent was different. "You're not Woohyun."
"No," said the biker. "I'm Dongwoo."
"Are you his friend?" Sunggyu asked.
"We're more like brothers," said the rider proudly.
Sunggyu was relieved to hear that. "Then do you know where he is?"
Dongwoo seemed reluctant to answer. "Um...I don't know," he replied. "He only asked me to keep an eye on you and make sure you get home safely."
Sunggyu's face was a mask of anguish. "How can he be worried about someone else when his injuries are far worse?"
Dongwoo's expression turned serious when he heard Sunggyu's words. "What injuries?"
The motorcycle stopped in front of a rundown apartment building. It was a good thing that Sunggyu could not see otherwise he would have realised how out of place he was there. Sunggyu climbed off the back of the motorcycle and handed Dongwoo back his helmet.
"Thank you," said Sunggyu politely, grateful that Dongwoo had agreed to give him a lift.
"You sure you don't want to wait here?" Dongwoo asked as they walked inside the building. "It's on the fourth floor and there's no lift."
"I'll be fine," replied Sunggyu.
Dongwoo shrugged at the Sunggyu's stubbornness as they made their way up the stairs.
By the time they reached the fourth floor, Dongwoo was rather impressed with the older man's stamina. Despite being blind and having to hold onto the handrail for guidance Sunggyu didn't seem to break a sweat.
They soon arrived at the room at the end of the hallway. Dongwoo knocked and waited a moment before the door opened. Without warning Dongwoo pushed Woohyun in the chest causing Woohyun to grimace. From Woohyun's reaction Dongwoo knew that Sunggyu's words were true.
"The Mighty Ice King who could easily take down a hundred men was actually wounded by some robbers?" said Dongwoo. "Why didn't you tell us?"
"What are you..." Woohyun began until his eyes caught sight of the person standing behind Dongwoo. He was surprised to see the older man. "Sunggyu, what are you doing here?"
"You left without a word," Sunggyu replied. "I was worried about you."
"You shouldn't have come," said Woohyun in a sternly.
Hearing Woohyun's tone of voice startled Sunggyu. He had never heard Woohyun speak to him in such a cold tone. He couldn't help but wonder if he had done something wrong to anger the young man. "Why did you leave without a word?"
There was a moment of silence. Woohyun looked at the older man as if contemplating something. He closed his eyes for a brief moment before opening them again. The hesitation in his eyes was replaced with determination.
"Because you're a burden."
