Looking Up

To Trouble Thee

Eunji suddenly felt cold as she felt someone pull her blanket away from her curled body. She groaned and forced her eyes open, then widened then when she saw that it was Daehyun who had appeared in front of her. The boy grinned at her with pure happiness.

"Wake up, sleepy head!" he ordered, tossing the blanket to the end of the bed. When Eunji refused to move and continued to stare at him, he smirked. "What? Surprised to see an angel at broad daylight?"

No, I'm surprised to see you, she wanted to say. You never came to my house since middle school.

"Good morning to you, too," Eunji muttered.

"Rise and shine, Eunji," Daehyun said. He opened the windows, forcing Eunji to groan. She finally sat up and turned. However, the moment her feet touched the ground, she felt that something was off.

She looked down at her feet, only to notice that newspapers were scattered all over the floor. She looked up in front of her and saw a random chair. She frowned as Daehyun patted the chair.

"Come on, now," he said. "Sit down."

"What is this?" Eunji asked him.

"I get to answer that question after I show you what I plan to do," Daehyun said.

"I'm serious, Daehyun."

"Don't be a bore, Eunji. Come on, just sit down," he said again.

"I don't have a good feeling about this…"

"Eunji, you've been on your bed all day. I heard that you hardly go out with your friends outside. It's time for you to start new, and by starting new, it means sitting on this chair," he told her.

"If I sit down on this chair, will you get out of my room?" she asked him, rubbing her eyes.

"Temporarily," he answered.

Better than a no, she thought. She got up and walked over to the chair. When she sat down, she saw Daehyun wrap a small cape over her shoulders. She frowned, confused, especially when he started to her hair because her neck.

"Relax," Daehyun told her when he realized that she was getting stiff. "I'm not going to do anything stupid.

"Really?" Eunji asked him. "I seriously doubt it—"

Snip, snip, snip—

"Oh my god. Daehyun, what is that?"

"Don't move," he said, using one hand to hold the top of her head.

Snip, snip, snip—

"Daehyun, are you cutting my hair?" she cried out, her eyes wide open.

Snip—

"Aw, damn it. You moved," Daehyun grumbled. "Stay still, okay?"

"God damn it, Daehyun!" she exclaimed. "Don't tell me you're actually cutting my hair? When was the last time you played with scissors? Daehyun, stop, stop—" Snip. "Oh my god. I swear, that was a huge chunk of hair that came off just then."

"I said don't move," he repeated. "The more you move, the more I have to cut—" Snip. "Woops."

"What? What happened? Jung Daehyun, after you do this, you are so dead!" she exclaimed. "Who let you into my house, anyway?"

"Your mom," he replied, snipping her hair.

Throughout the entire morning, Eunji started to whine, crying in the inside as Daehyun happily played with a pair of safety scissors and her shortening hair.

In the afternoon, the two decided to go out for a small snack, mainly for Daehyun to compensate for what he had done to Eunji's hair. Her hair—which had passed her shoulders—was now at length to her neck. The initial plan was to cut it at her shoulder's length, but he had messed up her hair so much that she had to cut it even shorter. It didn't look too bad in anyone's eyes, but Eunji, who wasn't comfortable with short hair, felt the need to grab a cap and head outside.

Daehyun glanced at Eunji, who was hanging her head low and sulking. When she noticed that he was staring, she glared at him, much to his surprise.

"Okay, let's be honest: that is a pretty good hair cut," Daehyun said, trying to defend himself.

"I look terrible," she muttered.

"Well, I heard that when a girl's heartbroken, she needs to cut her hair," he said.

"That's a terrible idea and I don't even want to know where you got that from."

"You look happier, though."

"I look ugly."

"No, you don't. I like that kind of hair cut on you. It suits you," he said, complimenting her. He quickly blushed when he realized what he had said. "I-I mean, you look good, but not that great compared to the girls on the magazine, y-you know?" She stared at him. "I-I don't read the weird m-magazines, okay? It's just that there's some really good-looking g-girls on these ads and—"

"I still think it's an ugly hair cut," she said, completely unfazed by his words.

Daehyun, slightly disappointed, sunk his shoulders. "How long are we going to talk about your hair cut? I'm sorry, okay?"

"Sorry isn't going to bring me back my looks," she mumbled.

"It'll grow back," he assured her.

"Speaking of which, why were you at my house? You never came to my house," she said. "Don't you have better things to do than barge into my room and start cutting up my hair?"

"What else would I be doing?" he asked.

"I don't know. What do popular kids do these days?" she asked him.

"Hey, if you haven't realized this yet, I've been playing basketball with your little friends," he pointed out. "A lot of my friends are asking me where I go and I end up telling them a lie or two."

"Because we're an embarrassment?"

Daehyun stiffened. "W-Well…"

"Stop. I don't need any other reasons," she said, raising her hand. "I completely understand that we both come from different worlds, and I respect that."

The boy could only mutter out an apology, to which she quickly dismissed. She finally looked up from the ground and examined the area.

"Where are we?" she asked him.

"Oh, this is the place where me and my friends don't go often, so I figured that I could come here with you," he told her.

"It's quiet," she commented, noticing that there were hardly anyone else on the streets.

"Yeah, but there's a really good place a few minutes from here. They serve these amazing spicy rice cakes. I wanted to come here again, but my friends didn't like the atmosphere too much."

"Why not?"

"It's too old-fashioned. It's not very modern-like. Plus, there's a lot of elderly people who go there, and my friends aren't good with the elders," Daehyun explained.

The two walked down the street and stopped at a small store, where there was an old woman frying some food. She looked up at the two and beamed at them, for her shop earned little customers. She quickly welcomed them and offered the two some free sample before the two sat down to order their food.

The moment Eunji took her seat, she heard a familiar voice a few feet away from her: "Eunji? Is that you?"

Eunji whirled around, then widened her eyes when she saw Jieun sitting with Hyunwoo at a different table, sharing a plate of Korean fish cakes. She instinctively widened her eyes and got up, making her way towards the two.

"Jieun!" Eunji exclaimed, quickly greeting her. She looked at Hyunwoo, who quickly averted her gaze. "Hello, Hyunwoo."

"Hi," the boy coldly muttered, biting into his food.

Jieun's eyes sparkled when she saw Daehyun awkwardly approaching them. "Are you on a date like us?"

Eunji shook her head. "No. Daehyun is treating me."

"Sounds like a date to me," Jieun said, grinning. "I almost couldn't recognize you. Did you get a hair cut today? It's pretty nice."

"Daehyun ruined it for me," Eunji muttered, glaring at Daehyun.

"Hey, even your friend said that it was a good hair cut," Daehyun said, raising his hands in defense.

"Oh! Here! You two sit across from us! I'll sit next to Hyunwoo!" Jieun exclaimed. She saw Hyunwoo give her an annoyed gaze. "Oh come on. They're my friends. You have to open up to them someday."

"I only agreed to come out because you said that you knew a quiet place." Hyunwoo grumbled, but he didn't prevent them from sitting down.

"Are you two on a date?" Daehyun asked them.

"No," Hyunwoo answered quickly.

"We're not on a date—yet," Jieun corrected, clinging onto Hyunwoo's arm. He quickly pushed her away and stuffed his mouth with food. She giggled. "He's shy when I get affectionate in public."

Eunji softly smiled at her. "It seems like you two are getting along."

"Not really," Hyunwoo told her.

"That's his way of saying 'yes' if you couldn't tell," Jieun whispered. "But I'm surprised to see you two together. It's such an odd couple."

Daehyun nearly choked on his water when he heard her refer to him and Eunji as a "couple." Eunji naturally rolled her eyes and rested her chin against her fist.

"There's nothing going on between me and Daehyun," she told her. "Isn't that right?"

"Um, um, um—"

"Here's your order of one big plate of spicy rice cake!" the old woman exclaimed, approaching their table with Eunji's and Daehyun's order. The duo quickly thanked her as the woman quickly scurried out to take care of any upcoming customers.

Jieun naturally went for a rice cake and started eating it before anyone else could touch it. She grinned at Daehyun, who frowned at her.

"Well, you might say that there's nothing going on, but I know something else," Jieun said. She wiggled her eyebrows at Daehyun, who flushed his cheeks in embarrassment.

"I hate you so much," he muttered, gritting his teeth.

"You can't hate me. That's Hyunwoo's job," Jieun said, sticking her tongue out.

"I thought his job was to love you back."

"His job is to love me and hate me," Jieun said, resting her head on his shoulder. Hyunwoo quickly jerked away his shoulder, causing Jieun to pout. She looked at the other two. "He's still shy."

"I'm not," Hyunwoo stated.

Jieun grinned. "You know, this kind of feels like a double date."

Eunji and Daehyun nearly choked on their food. They quickly reached for water and gulped it down. Daehyun wiped his mouth with the back of his hand and stared at Jieun.

"This is not a double date," Daehyun declared.

"Absolutely not!" Eunji agreed.

"Really? I think it is," Jieun said. She turned to Hyunwoo. "Doesn't this feel like a double date, Hyunwoo?"

"I'd rather have my partner be Eunji than you," Hyunwoo said. As he brought his cup to his lips, he noticed that Daehyun was frowning at him. "Wouldn't you prefer Eunji than Jieun to be your partner? It's only natural that I would say something like that."

"Well, yeah, but…" Daehyun glanced at Eunji, who stared at him with her brown eyes. It just doesn't sound good when some other guy says something like that…

"We should have a double date again some time," Jieun stated.

"I-It's not a double d-date!" Daehyun stuttered, his ears turning bright red. He stopped frowning when he heard a small giggle besides him. He looked to his side and saw Eunji trying to suppress a laugh. She bit hard on her bottom lip and cringed forward while covering with one hand and the other holding onto her stomach.

Ba-thump.

"I-I'm sorry," Eunji stammered in between her giggles. "I-It's just that… I haven't seen Daehyun like this is some time." She looked at him with a wide smile. "It's been a while since I saw him like this. It's kind of nostalgic."

"What's that supposed to mean?" Daehyun asked, slightly sulking. He felt himself getting smaller and smaller, but he wasn't ashamed of it. His eyes were glued on the way Eunji sincerely laughed at him; it was something that he, too, hadn't seen in such a long time.

"Nothing. It's just that I appreciate it when you panic a lot," Eunji said. She slowly got up from her seat. "I'll come back."

"Where are you going?" Daehyun asked her.

"The girls' room," Eunji said. She walked up and left the group for the moment.

Daehyun went back to eating his food. He started to stuff in the spicy food, occasionally drinking water time to time. The group remained silent for a long time until Daehyun caught Jieun staring at him. She gave him a gentle expression, much to his surprise.

"Can I help you?" Daehyun asked her.

"Thank you," Jieun said. The boys widened their eyes.

"What?" Daehyun asked.

"Thank you for making Eunji happy again," Jieun repeated. "After her boyfriend left her, Eunji has been feeling more depressed. She didn't like the idea that she loved someone half-heartedly and out of pity. Our group tried to make her happy again, but I guess she needed a little support from the outside." She smiled. "Please continue to make Eunji happy. When I saw her laugh today, I knew that she was actually laughing at you and not because the atmosphere required her to laugh."

Daehyun let out a fake laugh and looked elsewhere. Is that supposed to be a compliment when Eunji was laughing at me?

"I know you like Eunji a lot—" Daehyun spat out his water to the side. "—but I really appreciate that you're with her because you're her friend. Thanks."

Daehyun growled at her. "I really hate you."

She flashed him a grin, but stopped when she saw Hyunwoo get up from the table. He quickly dropped some cash on the table and left the building. Daehyun frowned, confused, while Jieun's eyes shimmered.

"What's up with him?" Daehyun muttered.

"He's jealous!" Jieun exclaimed. She squealed with delight and got up from her table. "He's so cute when he's jealous!"

"What's he jealous for?" he asked her.

"That's only between me and Hyunwoo," she said. "Tell Eunji that I'll see her at school, okay?" Before she left, she gave Daehyun one final grin. "Be a good friend, okay?"

"Whatever," Daehyun mumbled, hearing her foot step fade.

When Eunji came back, she looked around for Jieun and Hyunwoo. Noticing that those two were gone, she slowly took a seat across from Daehyun.

"Where did those two go?" Eunji asked.

"Hyunwoo got jealous apparently," Daehyun said.

"Hyunwoo? Jealous? For what?"

"I don't know. Jieun and I were just talking."

"About what?"

"About—" Daehyun stopped himself. "Well, it's nothing important."

Eunji dropped her jaws. "Are you keeping a secret from me?"

"What? No—"

"Jung Daehyun! First you cut my hair, and now you're sharing secrets with my best friend?"

"It's not like that—"

"You should treat me twice today!" Eunji complained.

Daehyun rolled his eyes, but stopped when he saw Eunji grin at him. The two soon ended up laughing at each other and exchanged playful teases as they ate their meal for the next long hours.

@DiseasedLife: Yep, it’s finally over. ^_^ I think I enjoyed writing Taemin’s ending the most. Even though he doesn’t end up with Soojung, he still has his friends to be for him. And thank you for commenting and supporting this story! I’m really glad that you’ve enjoyed it. :)
@baomei: Hahaha, same~ I started this story back when I was either a sophomore or a junior (can’t really remember what I was 3 years ago lol) and I’ve just started my university life this year. :P LOL Thank you for that fun fact! XD
@Shirass501: I might. I’ve been considering writing another friendship story but I don’t know if I want to start another story with three on-going stories, especially since two of my stories are heavy on plot. >_<
@sushi_pilsuk: OMG IKR T_T I see so many people who know what they want to do and how they get there, and I’m just like, “Well I just started to think about my future like what am I supposed to do now” OTL Hopefully we can both find something to do in the future that we’ll enjoy. ^_^
@butterdilys: Honestly, around a year ago I was thinking of writing a sequel, so I wrote this story with a sequel in the back of my head. My final decision for making a sequel or not depended on how I wanted Taemin to end up. If he hooked up with Soojung, then I told myself to write the sequel. If he didn’t, then I told myself to leave it as it is. In the end, I decided to have Taemin leave Soojung and go back to his friends and decided to leave the story there. ^^;;
@pearlaquaocean: And thank you for the support! I really appreciate it. :) Yep, I wanted to show that sometimes friendship can be more important than love and that not every finalized love needs to be in high school. :3

Chapter 60: Aw I'm glad that things ended well for soojung and hyeri friendship too...hyeri is quite selfish at first but she redeemed herself in the last chapter, soojung is a good friend. I like the simple ending, everyone is there for taemin when he needed them.
BTW, yea writer I'm also jealous of people who have solid ambition and dream they truly want to pursue because I'm kinda indesicive about my own future lol
