The Lunch

To Trouble Thee

Dasom was convinced that the worst date-planner award had to go to Eunji. On the day she came to have her double date with Taemin and his girlfriend, she discovered that her new, "romantic" partner would be…

"Myungsoo, how about eating at that restaurant?" Soojung said, pointing at the Italian-styled restaurant.

"H-Huh? Oh, right. We're eating something," Myungsoo reminded himself. He turned to Dasom and flashed her a smile. "Dasom, do you feel like eating?"

"No, I feel like throwing up," Dasom muttered. Just wait and see what I'll write in that journal! Ugh, this is revolting!

"How about black-bean noodles?" Taemin suggested, gesturing his chin at the small noodles shop. "That place is cheap and small. There's hardly any customers there. Oh, and the desert they sell there is great. Lots of good smoothies."

"Smoothies with black-bean noodles? Where in the world would they get that kind of idea?" Myungsoo asked, frowning.

"Who cares?" Dasom shouted, obviously frustrated with how long the group was taking to choose a place to eat. "Taemin, do you really think that eating at a place where the sauce can smudge all over the girl's mouth would be an attractive place to eat?"

Taemin blinked his eyes. "I was just thinking about the price—"

"Let's go eat over there," Dasom said, pointing at a fast food plcae.

Soojung frowned. "It's not romantic, though."

"I agree," Myungsoo said, nodding his head.

"Who cares? It's cheap. Let's go."

"No. I want to eat something good," Soojung replied. "I want to eat something with quality."

Dasom pulled Taemin to the side. "For the record, I think you chose the wrong girl to date."

"Hey, then if we're not hungry," Myungsoo said, pulling Taemin away from his crush, "then let's just drink a cup of coffee at the café."

Soojung's eyes glowed. "That's brilliant!"

"Oh, I don't drink coffee," Taemin replied.

The little girl widened her eyes. "Really? That's hard to believe. How do you stay awake at night, then? You're smart, so you should study a lot, right?"

"Um, I don't study as much as the others. Usually I'm caught up with the lessons the day the lesson ends. Coffee makes me stay awake too long. I need my daily sleep," he explained.

"In other words," Dasom continued, "he's naturally smart." She clapped her hands together. "Okay, if we're not going to dine at a fancy restaurant, eat Chinese food, or go to a café, then I say let's play around a bit until we're hungry."

Taemin raised his hand half-way, as if asking for permission to speak. "I didn't say that I was against going to the café though. I'm sure there's something else instead of coffee."

"You're planning to eat deserts before lunch?" Dasom asked him.

"No, not exactly. I know they have sandwiches there, so I might go there and try some," he replied.

"Then let's just have sandwiches and a cup of coffee for lunch," Myungsoo said. "I'll pay for all of you guys."

Dasom brightened up and clung onto Myungsoo's arm. "Really? You'll do that for us? Yes! There's at least some use of you!"

As the older boy blushed, the group made their way to a small café. Upon entering the doors, Dasom noticed a familiar figure standing on the small stage at the corner next to the windows. She squinted, looking carefully at the girl with loose, flowing hair. It took Dasom even longer to discover that the figure was actually a friend of hers.

"Junhee?" Dasom cried out.

The performer, who was just about to get ready, widened her eyes and greeted her friend. "Dasom? Taemin? What are you guys doing here?"

"We should be asking you that," Taemin said. "Do you play here?"

"I got bored at home and I decided to play a few songs for the guests. My aunt owns this place. She lets me perform here whenever I want and as long as it's a good song," the red-hair explained. "So can I ask what you guys are doing?"

"Having lunch," Taemin said.

"We're on a double date," Dasom added. She clenched her teeth. "Unfortunately, Eunji did the wrong thing and paired me up with Myungsoo. Luckily, he's buying lunch for all of us."

"Cool. Have fun," she said. Just when Junhee was about to leave, Taemin stopped her by grabbing her wrist. She turned around and gave him a strange look. "What?"

"Do we get a discount?" he asked her.

Junhee rolled her eyes. "Really? You're asking me this, especially when I'm not going to eat with you?"

"…Yes?"

The girl heaved a loud sigh. "You know, rather than eating here…"

Dasom frowned when the group (including Junhee) were sitting at the dining table, watching television in the small screen while waiting for their lunch to be served. The scent of food being cooked in the fry pan wafted in the air, and everyone's stomach roared in hunger. When Dasom noticed everyone enjoying a certain part of the show, she'd reach for the remote and changed it to something, much to everyone's disappointment. She would act like she didn't care though, and would pretend that everything was fine despite her disappointment in the event.

First I have Myungsoo as my blind date, and now I have to eat food made by my own friend? Just what part of this is a good day? Dasom wondered, completely irritated. She sighed and observed the simple room. She was quite surprised to see how plain the living room and kitchen was, but she was sure that Junhee's room must have floor scattered with music sheets and paint splashed against the walls.

"Lunch is served!" Junhee exclaimed. She came out of the kitchen with a tray of plates. "I give you my special, one and only, kimchi fried rice!"

"Thank you, Junhee," Taemin said. He looked up at the group and smiled. "Isn't this nice? We get free food and it's a homey atmosphere."

"It's not nice. It's not romantic," Dasom muttered, grabbing her spoon as she quietly ate her meal.

"W-Well, it's certainly something that I wasn't expecting," Soojung stammered, trying to keep the atmosphere alive. "I mean, even though Dasom isn't okay with this, I think I'm okay with this."

"Do you guys come here often? I mean, Dasom, you seem pretty comfortable here. You're just flipping channels as if you own the remote," Myungsoo pointed out.

"Oh, it's my first time coming here. Junhee normally doesn't invite people to her house," Dasom said, shrugging her shoulders.

"How about you, Taemin?" Myungsoo asked, turning to Taemin. It was clear to him that Dasom wasn't in the mood to talk.

"Um, I've been here twice, I think? Once for a project," Taemin said.

"What about the second time?" Soojung asked curiously.

The boy kept quiet, stuffing his mouth with food. Dasom looked up, examining the strange atmosphere. His eyes were on Junhee, almost telling her to not tell, to not speak of anything about his second visit. She raised her eyebrows, suspecting the two.

"Well, it seems like Dasom enjoyed the meal! Look, she cleaned her plate," Soojung said, pointing at the plate. She gestured her chin over at Dasom's chipmunk-filled cheeks, embarrassing the older girl for looking like a pig.

Dasom's face burned with surprise, not recognizing that she had eaten her lunch so fast. She knew that it wouldn't be proper to ask for more (she was sure that Myungsoo would call her something like a "hog" or a "fat piglet"), but she was still hungry. When she noticed Taemin's bowl barely touched, she gave him a look that begged for his share. Taemin was just about to give half of his food, but Myungsoo countered and quickly scraped off more than half of his lunch onto Dasom's bowl. She gave him a shocking look.

"You seemed hungry," Myungsoo said bashfully, looking away. "I know that you eat more than how much I eat sometimes."

There was a sudden throb in Dasom's heart. She awkwardly looked down at her food, hiding her red cheeks from her friends. She quickly reached out for her spoon and continued to stuff with large spoonfuls of rice.

What is this, what is this? she repeated anxiously. Her eyes widened when she choked on the spiciness. Junhee gasped and ran back into the kitchen, coming up with a cup of water for each of the individuals.

"T-T-Thanks, Junhee," Dasom stammered, gulping down the refreshing water. She coughed a bit some more, trying to clear . When she looked back down to eat, she noticed Soojung's fingers clawed to the table. Looking up with the corner of her eyes, Dasom noticed something odd about Soojung.

The younger girl was almost glaring at her bowl, nibbling on small bites. She'd look back up at Myungsoo, studying him, examining every move. As the four ate their dinner, Dasom couldn't help but notice that Soojung was paying way more attention to Myungsoo instead of Taemin. Pain and envy was written all over her face, yet the boys didn't seem to notice.

"By the way, you guys owe me money for this," Junhee said. She patted Myungsoo's shoulders. "If I remember correctly, you were the one paying for lunch, yes?"

Myungsoo dropped his jaws. "What? This wasn't free service?"

"Heck no! I'm not giving you guys lunch for nothing! I did this only to get money off of you," Junhee revealed. "I'm saving up some money for something, so I figured that this would work."

He groaned. "Fine. How much do I pay?"

As the older boy paid for their meal, Dasom's eyes were still on Soojung. Fortunately for her, it seemed like Soojung didn't notice her spying on her at the side. The four continued to finish their lunch, with a few of them exchanging some words. During the entire time, Dasom couldn't help but be bothered by the fact that Soojung was always paying attention to Myungsoo, often striking up a conversation with him and giving him a smile so fake, even Junhee could've probably noticed. The first-year's eyes kept flickering towards Myungsoo, asking him questions that Dasom wouldn't even think of asking him.

Moreover, Dasom was extremely concerned at the fact that Taemin said absolutely nothing, as if he didn't even care.

"Dasom, are you sure that you don't want to come home with us? I know that Myungsoo will be walking you, but I think it'll be okay if he does," Taemin said, tying his shoelaces.

"I'm fine! I haven't been to Junhee's house, so I kind of want to sleep over here. Besides, my mom already said yes," Dasom replied.

"Well, since nothing big happened between you and Myungsoo…" Soojung looked over at Myungsoo with a shy look. "I heard that our houses are pretty close. I'd be more reasonable for you to walk me back home instead of Taemin, right?"

Daosm's eyes bulged out as Myungsoo awkwardly glanced at the blond boy. Taemin stared at the two for a moment, keeping quiet. When he saw Soojung's desperate look, he only shrugged his shoulders.

"That sounds reasonable to me," Taemin agreed. "I don't live too far from here, and if I took Soojung back home, then it would take me longer to get back."

"Then it's settled! Myungsoo, you're walking me back home!" she exclaimed. She happily locked arms with Myungsoo, causing everyone's eyes (except for Taemin's) to grow big.

Myungsoo panicked, then looked at Dasom. She motioned him to let go of her arm. Myungsoo tried to follow, but he showed signs of struggles when he was unable to his arm away from her strong grip. Again, Dasom noticed the way Soojung's fingers clawed onto Myungsoo's arm, as if she was forcing him to stay still and to not back out. Dasom gave him an icy glare, but it took her a few seconds to realize that she wasn't really glaring at Myungsoo, but more at Soojung for…

For what? Dasom asked herself. Why would I have to glare at her for?

"Alright. Good night, Dasom, Junhee. I'll see you tomorrow, Soojung. Until next time, Myungsoo," Taemin said. He gave them all a friendly wave and turned around.

"Wait, aren't you taking the elevators with us?" Myungsoo asked, reaching over to grab Taemin's shoulders.

"I… I'm taking the stairs, tonight," Taemin said. "I ate a lot."

"Then let us take the sta—"

"Ouch!" Soojung cried out. She collapsed onto the ground, rubbing her ankle. "Ow…"

"What happened?" Myungsoo asked, surprised at her sudden action.

"I think I sprained my ankle," she said with a small pout.

"By standing? Tch." Dasom scoffed, rolling her eyes. She looked at Taemin, waiting for him to say something. It was obvious that Soojung was faking all this. She probably wanted Taemin to take her home, right?

"Want me to carry you or something?" Taemin asked.

Soojung gasped and clasped her hands. "That is a great idea!" She looked up at Myungsoo. "Carry me!"

Myungsoo bit his bottom lip. "Shouldn't your boyfriend do this—"

"I don't mind," Taemin interrupted. "Just carry her. You'll be fine."

"But—"

"I really need to go now. Bye." With that, Taemin left to take down the flight of stairs.

Myungsoo helpelessly bend down, giving Soojung a piggy back ride. He stared at Dasom, begging her some kind of help, but she only remained quiet. It was quite strange for Dasom to see Myungsoo care for another girl. Normally she had to handle the moody Myungsoo, so it felt weird for her to notice his compassionate part.

Her heart throbbed with envy.

"I guess we'll go, too…" Myungsoo trailed off. He gave them a small nod, and walked away with Soojung smiling on his back.

After the two were gone, Junhee closed the door and locked it. The moment Dasom heard the click, she headed towards the couch and grabbed a random pillow, crossing her legs and scowling at particularly nothing.

"Did you see that?" Dasom asked. "Did you notice that?"

"Notice what?" Junhee asked, sitting on the floor. "Do you want something to eat? I'll charge you, but I'll give you half off."

"Them. Soojung and Taemin. Did you see that? During the entire time, Soojung kept flirting with Myungsoo. Like, really? Was she really doing that in front of her boyfriend?" Dasom pointed out.

"I noticed that, too," Junhee said, nodding her head. "But Taemin didn't seem to mind—"

"And he didn't," confirmed Dasom. "He didn't even care! Not even a little bit!"

"To be honest, I thought she was just trying to make Taemin jealous. I mean, she kept flirting with another guy, and Taemin still didn't respond," Junhee said. She paused. "You know, he kind of looked upset."

"Upset? With that poker face? Definitely not," Dasom said. She sighed. "Honestly, no matter how I look at this, it doesn't seem like Soojung is interested. It seems like she's actually using Taemin."

"Taemin? Being used? How strange."

"Exactly! I mean, sure we use him for homework, but we still treasure him, right? He's a really good friend, and if Soojung can't see Taemin as a really good boyfriend, then it's our responsibility to do something about it!"

"Woah, woah, woah. Stop right there," Junhee said, raising her hand. "Are you saying that you want to break them up?"

Dasom placed her index finger on her lips. "That doesn't sound like a bad idea…"

"Dasom, I know you like getting into other people's romance, but I don't think this is right. Don't you think the two should just be left alone?" Junhee asked.

"Don't worry, don't worry. This will be done smoothly and painlessly," Dasom assured her.

"I'm still worried, Dasom," Junhee said. "Besides, I really think Taemin and Soojung should be left alone. Taemin's been broken-hearted before. If something ends up happening again, who knows how his love life would turn out in the future! He could end up like Byunghun: gloomy and depressed."

Dasom smirked. "Junhee, remember that card you gave me? Come on, we got an expert in relationships right in front of us! Baekhyun's a good friend of mine, and with me as his partner, we can do just about anything without anyone crying. Plus…"

The girl paused, then giggled. Junhee tilted her head to the side, frowning. The giggling girl came down the sofa and reached for her red hair, grinning.

"Don't you know someone in a red uniform who has a crush on Taemin? I think she might be a better match for him!"

@DiseasedLife: Yep, it’s finally over. ^_^ I think I enjoyed writing Taemin’s ending the most. Even though he doesn’t end up with Soojung, he still has his friends to be for him. And thank you for commenting and supporting this story! I’m really glad that you’ve enjoyed it. :)
@baomei: Hahaha, same~ I started this story back when I was either a sophomore or a junior (can’t really remember what I was 3 years ago lol) and I’ve just started my university life this year. :P LOL Thank you for that fun fact! XD
@Shirass501: I might. I’ve been considering writing another friendship story but I don’t know if I want to start another story with three on-going stories, especially since two of my stories are heavy on plot. >_<
@sushi_pilsuk: OMG IKR T_T I see so many people who know what they want to do and how they get there, and I’m just like, “Well I just started to think about my future like what am I supposed to do now” OTL Hopefully we can both find something to do in the future that we’ll enjoy. ^_^
@butterdilys: Honestly, around a year ago I was thinking of writing a sequel, so I wrote this story with a sequel in the back of my head. My final decision for making a sequel or not depended on how I wanted Taemin to end up. If he hooked up with Soojung, then I told myself to write the sequel. If he didn’t, then I told myself to leave it as it is. In the end, I decided to have Taemin leave Soojung and go back to his friends and decided to leave the story there. ^^;;
@pearlaquaocean: And thank you for the support! I really appreciate it. :) Yep, I wanted to show that sometimes friendship can be more important than love and that not every finalized love needs to be in high school. :3

Chapter 60: Aw I'm glad that things ended well for soojung and hyeri friendship too...hyeri is quite selfish at first but she redeemed herself in the last chapter, soojung is a good friend. I like the simple ending, everyone is there for taemin when he needed them.
BTW, yea writer I'm also jealous of people who have solid ambition and dream they truly want to pursue because I'm kinda indesicive about my own future lol
