Squirrels and Hedgehogs
SerendipityYongguk glanced over his shoulder cautiously and looked back at the two fairies in front of him. Even though they were wearing the same set of pastel clothes they couldn't have been any more different. One of them was as pale as milk and the other one had a golden tan. They were of the exact same height but the sun-kissed boy was slightly broader and he seemed to beam with warmth just as much as the other one radiated frostiness.
It was clear that none of them belonged into the autumn forest as one of them had bright blue eyes and the other one's irises were dark. The pale one with the blue eyes had wings that sparkled like diamonds and Yongguk guessed that he was a winter fairy. It surprised him as not only it was not allowed to cross the borders unless there was work to do but also it was known to be dangerous for snow fairies to go into a warmer region and vice versa.
That left the other one to be a summer fairy. Yongguk had seen spring fairies before, they were rather pale and had green eyes. But now that he had worked out where these two fairies who were sitting on their knees, their head hung low as if they waited to be scolded belonged to, more questions arose. Not only how the two boys had even met but also what they were doing in the autumn forest.
He knew that if anyone else would find them, they would be send back straight to where they belonged to and the way they were meekly waiting for him to say something made him feel pity for the fairies. What ever they were doing here, they definitely weren't trying to cause any harm.
Yongguk sighed in defeat. There was something innocent about the boys that made him want to protect them but first he needed to get them away from the river.
“Wait here for a moment and hide behind the bushes,” he said and pointed towards a group of bushes. The two fairies scrambled up immediately and rushed towards the shrubs on light feet.
When he came back after excusing himself, he found the fairies holding hands, waiting patiently for his return.
“We'll go to my house and there you can explain what you're doing here,” Yongguk said, his words not threatening but caring.
They had to fly a longer route to avoid the other fairies, even though they could have just flown up the river until they would arrive at the place where Yongguk's house was. The snow fairy seemed to have trouble with flying, obviously not used to this weather and the summer fairy had to support him which slowed them down again.
When they landed in front of Yongguk's large pumpkin house, he was relieved. The two boys watched in awe at the orange house which reminded Yongguk that they probably had never seen a house like that before and his heart filled with warmth. Even though they were all fairies and in some points similar, each season had their own significant traits which made Yongguk happy whenever he came across another fairy.
He opened the door and gestured the two boys to step in and they shyly stepped over the doorstep. Once the wooden door had closed behind them, the summer fairy, or Daehyun as he had introduced himself earlier walked around his house, a curious spark in his eyes.
Daehyun roamed around and touched every surface, a soft giggle escaping his lips every once in a while. Yongguk was standing next to the snow fairy who stood timidly, not daring to move, looking at Daehyun with a soft fondness. He didn't mind that the boy was looking around, the summer fairy's childlike curiousity was really endearing and made his heart feel warm.
A fire was crackling in the fireplace, painting the warmly furnished room in a soft orange light that was warm and inviting and whilst Yongguk was used to it he thought that probably neither of the other fairies needed fire.
“Come here, Youngjae,” Daehyun burst out excitedly, making a gesture for the snow fairy to follow him.
The snow fairy looked at Yongguk, waiting for approval and when he nodded, the shy boy followed the other to a wall where leaves of all kinds and colours were hanging, creating a beautiful picture.
Youngjae let his finger glider over the leaves, enjoying the smooth texture. He had never seen so many colours at once and all his senses tickled to explore this beautiful world.
“How about we talk now?” Yongguk interrupted them.
It took around half an hour to explain everything, with Daehyun talking mostly. He explained how he had landed in the winter woods for the first time and how one meeting had turned into regular meetings, about Jongup and Himchan and the discovery of sharing pixie dust to adjust to the differen
