Entry 01
Diary of an Innocent Girl's Lies“MISS JUNG SOO JUNG!”
The sudden call of my name rang through my ears as I looked up from my diary. I looked around and saw my fellow classmates staring at me; some giggling, some giving me the dirty eye.
“Uhm…Yes Miss Kwon??” I stood up to get ready to have a hard beating of words pounded into my head.
“I have been calling your name repeatedly to answer a question, but it seems as if you’re busy taking diligent notes back there.” My teacher began slapping the ruler in her hand to her palm. “Would you care to read us the notes you have been writing just in case your classmates have missed something I said?”
Dead. Beyond dead. I haven’t been taking notes for … “Oh yes, of course…notes!” I looked down at my desk and saw that my diary was being covered by somebody else’s journal. I looked to my right at what seemed to be Amber’s notes. I looked at her and she used her eyes to tell me to go ahead and just use it. I gave a sigh of relief and started reading the notes on “English pronunciation and grammar” out loud. A loud slap across the desk startled me and I stopped reading.
“Sit down Miss Jung, and answer when your name is being called.” The teacher went back to her lecture on the board. I sat back in my chair sliding the notebook back to Amber.
“You are a life saver,” I whispered as I put my diary away in my backpack for now as I brought out my English workbook. “Thank you.”
“No problem.” She stuck her fist up to me. “Us "transfer" students should stick together, right?” I pounded her fist and we both laughed. Amber was the one other student also from California that moved to South Korea at the beginning of high school. I had come to South Korea when I was in middle school, and felt a natural empathy towards her since I had been in her situation before. Now, we were practically best friends and while I helped her with basic Korean, she helped me with everything else. Basically, getting me out of situations like…well, what just had happened.
“Writing a novel their author Jung?” Amber whispered as she kept her eyes on the board, and pencil moving with the notes being written. I shook my head and began to copy some notes as well. I knew that we were both half assing this English thing because for starters we were English speakers. This English was baby stuff for us and we always passed our tests with flying colors.
“You can say that” I whispered back.
“What about?”
“It’s about a girl who got fired from her recent job and has no idea what to do now with her life…” I erased a weird pencil mark I accidentally made on the paper.
“What?! You got fired?!” Amber exclaimed a little too loudly. I shushed her down.
“Yeah, but it’s okay I guess” I lied. “I can always find another one. And a better one hopefully…”
“One where you don’t have to be watching rich people spend their money like used Kleenex tissues?”
I laughed. “Amen.” I raised my hand up and gave her a high five.
“MISS JUNG!”
I looked up at my name being called again, being put in the same position I was in earlier. I bit my lip while standing up.
“Yes, Miss Kwon?”
“Lunch detention today.” Miss Kwon slapped the ruler on her desk making it final. I flinched. The students “ooh’d” at the sudden disciplinary act as I sat down again while rolling my eyes. Amber gave me an apologetic look, but I gave her a reassuring look that it was okay. I heard snickering across our way and we both looked to our right. 5 certain boys were taunting me and making fun of me as Kai just sat their smiling and shaking his head. I felt someone nudge my side and saw that Amber was passing a ball of paper to me. I opened it on my desk and read the note
Looks like I won’t be alone in detention today, huh? Maybe if we’re lucky it could be just the two of us… & we haven’t done anything in a while…
--Kai
I rolled the piece of paper back into a ball and put it in my backpack, holding back a smile. God, did I have such a y friend.
“Oh! Yeobo!!” My teacher’s voice carried in an annoyingly high tone. I looked up and saw a man standing in the middle of the doorway to the classroom. He had a blonde-ish combover hair style, a nice chiseled face, outstanding fashion sense, and oh hello there… he just exuded freaking luxury… Though, his face looked kind of cold. Maybe I shouldn’t judge a book by its cover so quickly? For all I know he may be the nicest guy on Earth under that is shield of frozen—
“Let’s break up.” He said that without a stutter in his voice or regret in his face. The silent chattering from the underclassmen grew quiet as they watched the scene unfold. I even left my pen hanging on the page.
“Yeobo… wh-what are you talking about??” Miss Kwon looked from us students back to the man standing at the door giving off an ugly nervous smile. “Didn’t you enjoy last night??” She walked her finger up his crisp white shirt, and the man flicked it off. Okay, ew, I did not need to know that she fools around wih younger guys. In fact, I didn't know she fooled around AT ALL...And I wish she would kept it that way.
“Actually, I didn’t. But, it seems like YOU did…” He took his phone out and showed her something on the screen. I heard screeching of desks and chairs as the underclassmen up front tried to get a view of the screen. I crooked my head causing me to hover around my own seat a bit, trying to see what it was.
“Y-your breaking up with me because I posted a selca??” Miss Kwon questioned. The man nodded his head then put the phone back in the inside pocket of his suit. Damn, what a fancy … the move and his in general.
“I don’t appreciate you posting a picture of me without my knowing… Especially when it pertains to showing off your bed time activities with me.” I heard the students’ chuckle; even I couldn’t help break out a funny smile. ‘Bed time activities’? Was that the new adult lingo for ?
“Oh sorry Yeobo… I’ll take off the picture right away and—“
“No need to, it’s already off and reported to the agency.” He placed in his hands in his pockets like a charismatic bad . “You won’t be seeing me any longer Miss Kwon. Goodbye.” He turned to the class and took a slow gaze upon each and every one of us as if he was telling us “you didn’t see anything” kind of scenario. All of us scattered back to our regular assumed positions before he came in the classroom, chattering a little louder then before. I went back to writing in my diary.
“Excuse me miss…” I looked up—wait down—at the voice coming from the ground. I saw the man from upfront at a very close distance looking at my… backpack? “Where did you get this backpack from?”
I looked at my backpack, then at him. “This? I-I brought it back from America and added the extra designs myself…” He took out his phone from where I had seen him previously place it before.
“May I take a picture of it?” He asked already starting to snap pictures of it even without my permission. I nodded slowly as he took my backpack and took pictures of it in every angle possible. When he was done he placed it on top of my desk. “You said you designed it?”
I nodded my head. “Y-Yes sir.”
“It’s nice.” He nodded at it then looked me in the eyes freezing my insides to the blizzard that just ran through me. “What’s your name?”
“Jung Soo Jung, sir” I replied back.
“Jung…Soo…Jung” He typed it in his phone then without another word or thanks, the guy just left the classroom. Okay, wow…weird… I put my backpack down beside my desk; when looking up I realized that all the students’ eyes were on me… and worse? Miss Kwon was giving me the death stare. I heard a screech of the chair beside me.
“Yah! Soo Jung-ah!” Kai pushed my shoulder to get my attention. “What was that about??”
“Huh?”
“You and Mr. Suit guy… What did he say to you?”
I pointed to my backpack. “He took pictures of my backpack.” I pointed to myself. “Then, he asked me my name.” I pointed to the door. “Finally, he left.”
Kai arched an eyebrow. “He didn’t ask for your number or anything else?”
I shook my head. “Ani… Just my name.”
“Good.” Kai turned around keeping his spot next to me, and put his headphones back on. As he started jamming to music again, I looked back down at my diary.
