It’s been five years since I left Korea. What that meant was it was five years since I saw Taeyeon, Jinah, Hwayoung, Woohyun, or Sungyeol face-to-face. It was also five years since I saw Myungsoo. Life here isn’t like Korea at all. At first, it was hard, trying to get used to all the customs here, but after a while, I got used to it. I learned snippets of English from Sunggyu and when he enrolled me in a school, I learned there. There were times I used to think of my life in Korea, and I missed everything. Especially Myungsoo.

“Do you want a ride home?”

I shook my head. “No thank you, Michelle. My brother is picking me up,” I replied, patting my friend’s hand. She was blind and was the type of person who needed to know where someone was standing so she could face them.

“Ok, I’ll see you tomorrow Mikyung!” I smiled at her mother watched as she led Michelle to their car. Looking at them made me feel a little jealous. My mother was never home, deciding to work two jobs. I didn’t understand why, because Sunggyu’s job was enough to pay for our living expenses, but I guess it was because she didn’t want to be home. I leaned back on the back of my wheelchair, put my earbuds in, and waited for my brother’s car.

When I sit around for a long period of time without anything to do, I think. The topic is usually random, and today’s was Korea. I missed it a lot, it being 5 years since I was there. Almost everything here reminded me of being in Korea. Michelle, who was like my new Taeyeon (though no one could replace Jung Taeyeon) was blind, which made me think of Myungsoo’s cousin Soyeon. My other friend, Hannah, was like Hwayoung. And lastly, there was this boy in my class, who was also in a wheelchair, whose name was Kevin, reminded me so much of Myungsoo. In fact, he was the only other Korean in the whole school, which made us instant friends.
