Chapter Six

‘Be quick! Don’t keep me waiting, both of my mummies!’ Tegan shouted excitedly.

Jessica looked at the mirror and was immediately amused by her own beauty, it has been ages since she’s gotten herself to dress up for an occasion.

The last time she’d dressed up was before she was put in-change of taking care of Tegan, she didn’t mind though, that her chance of dressing up for festive seasons or any joyous occasion was forbidden because she’s a child with her.

Tiffany, on the other hand, walked out confidently from her room and Tegan’s face immediately lighted up upon seeing the brunette.

Her dress code was simple; she had pulled out a blue dress with shades of grey at the bottom of it. Her brunette hair was swept to her right, leaving her left neck slightly exposed. She’d chosen her silver ear rings and they were attached loosely onto her earlobes, but that didn’t matter because she made herself look more elegant that way. She finished it off with some light makeup on her face and with red lipsticks; her favourite of all.

Tiffany fidgeted as she sat on one of the seats in their house as she held onto her present for Jessica.

She hoped the girl would like it.

The door knob was unlocked and Jessica slowly emerged out of her room. Tegan was squealing as she saw Jessica standing beautifully in front of her like she was a sculpture. Tiffany just shook her head and she couldn’t help but to let this sheepish grin of hers to be spread across her face.

The blonde pulled it off so well just being in a black dress that ends of at her knee cap. The blonde had such a talent of wearing simple clothes yet making it look so good on her. Jessica had worn golden earrings and brightened her eyes with some mascara and with pale pink lipstick.  And when Tiffany locked her eyes with Jessica’s, the latter shyly tucked a lock of blonde hair behind her ears.

She looked kinda pretty, Tiffany smiled to herself. No, she is gorgeous.

Tegan’s giggles made brought both the adults back into their senses before they laughed awkwardly.

The spread of food in front of them made them gulp a little, it was Tegan’s birthday and that explains the cake hidden inside of the refrigerator.

‘And today is my birthday,’ Tegan chirped. It was Christmas and it was also Tegan’s birthday. Jessica had once thought of it as unfortunate since she’d have to prepare two presents at the same time of the day every year. But now it is different, Jessica didn’t mind those little preparations she has to every year.

‘It is your birthday?’ Tiffany teased.

‘Yes!’ Tegan giggled as she poked on her cheese sausage with her fork.

‘Mummy J ahhh,’ the younger girl instructed.

‘Oh okay,’ Jessica did as what Tegan had instructed her to do and smiled as she chewed her food.

After today, Tegan would be eight years-old and it’d mark the fourth year of her taking care of Tegan. Jessica couldn’t imagine the day when Katherine comes back to her just to take back Tegan, how would her life be like then? A happy life with sad smiles or a sad life with happy smiles? Because honestly if Tegan is a burden, Jessica wouldn’t mind carrying it around with her all the time.

--

‘Happy Birthday to you!’ Jessica and Tiffany sang as Tegan beamed happily back at both the adults.

‘Now, make a wish quickly before your candles burn out!’ Tiffany hurried the younger girl.

‘I wish…’ Tegan closed her eyes and pressed both her palms together, ‘I wish that Mummy J will get together with Mummy T and in future we can have our family celebrations together.’

‘Don’t know if wishes will come true if you said it aloud though,’ Tiffany teased.

Jessica gave the brunette a genuine smile that caused the latter to flutter a little with her heart hitting against her ribcage and her cheeks filled with shades of red.

The three of them had some chit-chats before they did their gift exchange with Jessica kissing Tegan on her forehead, wishing her a Merry Christmas and Sweet half of sixteen.

‘And your last Birthday present,’ Jessica fished out an envelope.

Letter Ten

Merry Christmas and Happy Birthday, Tegan! You’re eight years-old now, how fast has time passed? I hope you’re enjoying your night with your Mummy Jessica and I hope to see you any time soon.

I’ll pass you your present when we meet soon, alright? Love you girl. Please stay healthy and I’ll see you soon.

Love,

Mummy Katherine

Tegan rubbed her eyes wearily as she slid the letter into the envelope. She smiled as she rested her head on Jessica’s lap and played with her blonde hair.

‘You okay, baby?’ Jessica looked down as she fixed Tegan’s bangs.

‘I’m fine,’ Tegan smiled happily. There wasn’t any sign of her being unhappy, her eyes were weary but the girl did look happy. Behind her brown eyes was pure happiness which Jessica hasn’t seen for a long period of time.

‘Glad you’re fine,’ Tiffany scuttled closer to Jessica as she expressed her concern for Tegan.

Tegan has always been picturing a perfect family ever since she was left under Jessica’s care and she felt as if she knew how it felt like now. Because right now Jessica is giving Tiffany a side-loped grin and Tiffany is linking arms with the blonde with the little girl staring up at the both of them and she couldn’t help but to smile at the duo.

‘It’s ten now, so do we go to bed or do we stay up for a while more?’ Jessica asked as she brushed the soft, fine hair of the little girl.

‘We get to stay up for today?’ the latter’s eyes crinkled upon hearing that.

‘Well, for today, it is a ‘yes’,’ the blonde giggled and Tegan snuggled closer towards Jessica’s stomach and rubbed her nose against it.

‘Heyyyyy, it’s itchy!’ the blonde moved from left to right as she laughed conspiratorially.

Tiffany watched closely at the both of them and for a moment she’d gotten her answer to starting a family with Jessica.

-/-/-/

‘Oh gosh, this is so stupid,’ Tegan hit her forehead against her palm as she muttered about the television series showing on the screen.

‘How is it stupid? I find it meaningful though,’ Tiffany spoke as she munched onto her popcorns.

‘What?’ Tegan looked up at Tiffany incredulously as she raised an eyebrow, ‘you mean watching Dora asking where something is and that thing momentarily pops up in front of her is meaningful?’

‘Yeah? How is it not meaningful? It is meaningful because it gets me every time about how such gullible show had conned many children thinking that Dora is really an explorer,’ Tiffany stuck her tongue out at Tegan.

“Eww Tiffany,’ Tegan mocked.

“Tsk, who taught you to be such a little bully?’ Tiffany puffed her cheeks and pretended that she was angry.

‘Awww, Mummy T,’ the younger pulled the lower hem of Tiffany’s shirt.

It was still Christmas night though. Tegan and Tiffany decided to have some bonding time together by sitting on the sofa and catching a series of Dora together while Jessica was washing the dishes and observing them quietly from the kitchen. It’s fascinating how the both of them have grown so close together just after spending a few months together.

Jessica had wondered how much her life has changed ever since she’d met Tiffany in her History class and coincidentally moving into the same flat that Tiffany has been staying. Jessica didn’t know how to be that brave about how the society would judge her but she guess that she’s fine now because she has a girlfriend who hangs out well together with her child and her.

The blonde was spreading the soap on the dishes before she zooned out, recalling about the days she’d spent without Katherine.

-/-/-/

‘Say Peekaboo!’ one of Jessica’s friends called out as they did several different posts in front of the camera.

‘Hey show me the pictures!’ TaeYeon called out for the cameraman.

‘Oh hey, I look fine here, so keep this picture,’ TaeYeon smiled in satisfaction.

‘EWWWW, DELETE IT, TAEYEON!’ Hyomin had look of horror.

‘No!’ TaeYeon snatched the camera from the photographer and had a game of mini-catching around Jessica’s house before Hyomin eventually tripped and fell on TaeYeon’s .

‘Hey did you not bathe or something? You smell,’ Hyomin commented and whipped her face with a clean napkin.

‘You’re gross.’

‘You too.’

Jessica laughed at two of her friends as she swirled the class of champagne in her hand, watching the liquid sweeping through the sides of the glass like waves washing the sands away before it finally settle in the glass again.

Taking a small sip of the champagne, she could taste the sweetness of the drink and felt the coldness when the drink was washed down .

Life without Katherine was good though, in fact it was better.

Jessica had always thought how bad her life would be without Katherine; nobody would truly care for her, nobody would send her little notes of encouragement whenever she felt the stress slowly flooding her mind and nobody would give her a smile that could momentarily make her feel relaxed.

But Jessica has not tried how life is without Katherine and she is enjoying the little things in life now.

She knew how much her friends cared about her and how much they disliked Katherine from the start. She knew how to finally relax and not get tensed whenever Katherine was being paranoid thinking that Jessica has an affair outside.

She knew how to truly let go of someone that never belong to her from the start.

Because how could you love when all you do is to fear how the other party might be feeling jealous or paranoid?

The whole house froze when the doorbell suddenly rang.

Who could be here at such hour? It was just ten minutes before midnight.

Jessica stood with trembling legs as she walked towards the door. The feeling is getting stronger…

The bell rang again when Jessica was already in front of it, who could it be?

‘Go on sica,’ Taeyeon encouraged, knowing exactly where this whole thing would be going.

She opened the door and stood rooted onto the ground.

‘Hi Jessica,’ that once very familiar face smiled back at her.

‘Hey,’ she mumbled, unsure of what to say.

‘I’m sorry to disturb you at such hour but… could you please… take care of the girl for me?’ she asked so softly, it sounded as if she was pleading with a little voice. The young girl standing right in front of her had a perfect coffee coloured hair, and she was wearing a sky blue chiffon dress with white t-shirt. She stood there looking at Jessica with her big round eyes as she onto her lollipop.

‘What do you mean by that?’ Jessica asked.

‘I… uhm, I’m leaving the girl to you. Sorry,’ and then she passed a bag and handed the girl’s hand to Jessica before she left hastily.

Life without Katherine was fine only until she decided to interfere Jessica’s life with a child.

TaeYeon and Hyomin’s mouth hung wide open at the situation but they recovered quickly.

They’d put the girl to a quick bath before tucking her under the bed sheet.

‘Guess what Jessica, Katherine’s a . She left you a letter that you never dared to open, but we read it for you anyway. Said that she’ll leave a child under your care for ten years and a sum of money and poof, she left so easily,’ Hyomin mentioned sarcastically.

‘What do I do now?’ Jessica asked like a lost sheep.

‘Don’t worry, we’ll be here for you,’ Hyomin and TaeYeon gave Jessica a group hug before they spent their Christmas eve’s night together asleep on the couch.

-/-/-/-/

She slipped her arms around Jessica’s tiny waist before she rested her chin on top of her shoulder.

‘What are you thinking?’ Tiffany asked softly, stopping the hamsters from running in Jessica’s head.

‘Hmm? Nothing much, just loving how you and Tegan are close nowadays,’ Jessica turned to smile at Tiffany with her hands still on the dishes.

‘Are you jealous?’ the brunette quizzed.

‘Am I? Why did I not know?’ the blonde washed her hands before she turned around in Tiffany’s arms, completely facing the latter.

‘Because you’re slow in thinking, that’s why,’ and the brunette gave her a quick peck on her cheeks causing the blonde to blush a little.

‘Where’s Tegan?’ the latter asked.

‘Already in her lalaland,’ she replied with a sleepy tone.

‘Are you feeling sleepy already though?’ the blonde kissed her gently on her lips.

‘Do we get to sleep together?’ the brunette giggled.

‘No,’ the blonde chuckled before she rubbed her nose against Tiffany’s and rested her forehead against the latter’s.

They were about to kiss before the doorbell rang.

She had no choice but to go to the door after the doorbell rang for three times.

‘Hey Jessica,’ the lady in blue called out.

‘Why is it you again?’ Jessica stared at the woman right in front of her. Why hasn’t she changed yet? Why isn’t she changed yet?

‘I am-‘

‘Hey Jessi, who is that?’ Tiffany back-hugged Jessica and she was stunned for a while because she had seen this face somewhere before.

‘You must be Jessica’s girlfriend. Hi, I am Katherine,’ she offered a handshake but Jessica slapped her arms away.
