Dear Tofu

“Back,” Baekhyun called for your attention. You were looking down, deep in thought about Sehun, who just also happened to be at the drive-in, so his call for you had no affect to your depressive state.

“Bora?” he questioned if it was even you he was looking at. Just a few moments ago, you were so excited to watch this movie.

This time, you lifted your head up, finally acknowledging his presences with a small smile. Baekhyun tried hard not to think any further about it.

“What took you so long?” you asked him as if he really did take the longest time, when in reality the fact that Sehun could be burning holes at the back of your head made you feel as if time was slowing down drastically.

“I just went to the bathroom?”

You pressed your lips into a thin line; your question was ridiculous. “Of course, you were. Sorry, stupid question,” you tried laughing it off.

“Sehun, are you even listening to me?” you heard the same girl’s voice from earlier.

Anything Baekhyun said after that seemed irrelevant since you tried so hard to hear what Sehun had to say.

“Bora, is that Sehun?” Baekhyun tried nudging you, but you just didn’t seem to budge until he grabbed your shoulders.

You could swear that you had let out a laugh. Man, this bothered you so much. So much that you could cry and stomp your feet because you couldn’t understand. You didn’t understand why this was getting to you. You didn’t understand that your best friend was able to abandon you so easily. You were mad at everything and anything. And all you wanted to do is whine out of frustration. But of course, you were more mature than that.

The aching sensation throughout your head was not even helping one bit. The pain can be compared to being punished with thousands of problems hitting you all at once when in truth you currently only had to deal with one: Sehun and yours friendship.

“I’ll bring the snacks in the car. I wasn’t sure if you wanted anything else, but here’s your chang—“

“Something happened,” Baekhyun didn’t question it; he stated it.

Your eyes diverted elsewhere. Now, you couldn’t even face the person you came here with because you were too embarrassed to say anything.

“Can we just go to the car?” you said almost as if you were begging him.

“Sure,” he sounded concerned and naturally and gently the back of your head as he guided you out the door.

Sehun was banging his head back against the car seat for a great amount of times. He couldn't help but feel a sense of regret that he just let you slip away with another guy. This was different now because it involved another guy. And just like that, his confidence fell.

“Get a hold of yourself,” the girl he came with snapped at him, “You’re supposed to make her jealous.”

“She’s on a date,” Sehun confirmed, “She didn’t even look at me twice. I was probably so easy to toss away.”

The girl grabbed Sehun’s chin and had him face her. “You look hot. She was probably shocked seeing you this handsome,” she tried encouraging him, “That Bora chick is probably thinking about how you and I are together, what we're doing, and how you were able to forget her so fast. Just like how you are right now. Am I right?”

She was right. He was thinking those exact things.

“I take your silence as a ‘you’re damn right I am,’” she chuckled and he laughed along. Sehun calmed down a bit but was incapable of paying attention to the film.

“I felt pained,” he spoke out of no where as if this stranger was able to console all his problems, “She knew I liked her and she lead me on like that. My best friend knew that she knew. But I can’t find myself to hate her.”

“Why are you doing this stupid thing then?”

“I heard the feeling of revenge was satisfying.”

The girl let out a breath, shaking her head with a damn smirk on her face.

“It’s only satisfying if your objective is to break her, you know.”

No, he didn’t know.

“She can break me so easily. Can’t she like me like how I like her and just hate me for being with another girl too?”

“You, sir, are living in a movie. If you don’t want to break her, you’re only breaking yourself.”

Sehun pondered on the girl’s words. Was she right? Was Yoonhee wrong? Did he take this game way too far?

“So, lover boy, how did you start liking this girl?” the girl leaned back on the car seat and stared at him with eyes filled with curiosity, “I mean, if you don’t mind me asking, of course.”

“Obviously, it never started out with me wanting to break her,” he somehow was willing to joke.

“Oh, really?” she smiled.

“It started back when we were around eight. I didn’t like her then, but my friend, the one that knew that she liked me, introduced us to her one day.”

Sehun was seated with Yoonhee as they waited for Jongin to come sit with them. He was more late than usual, but they thought no further of it because eventually he was going to come, they knew that.

It was about ten minutes into lunch and there was still no sign of Jongin. Soon enough, lunch was over and they realized that Jongin practically ditched them. Being eight year olds, their span of disappointment was quite low, but their curiosity was relevantly high.

As the two of them were walking back into homeroom, they noticed Jongin trying to talk to a stranger. They were even shocked when he grabbed her hands, making small comments about how Jongin was a lover boy; he normally was to be honest, but his acts towards her were a bit more genuine.

“Hey, if you hang out with my friends, I will give you my Oreos! I don’t give them to anyone,” Jongin spoke out dramatically as he even handed her his bag of Oreos. It's true. He doesn't.

And with no response from her, he pouted. “Please stop being sad!” he stomped his feet, “There’s no point to being sad! Smile!”

He even leaned in with his small fingers to stretch out a smile on the girl’s face.

“I think you would look pretty smiling,” he said in a matter-of-factly tone.

And at the very moment, that girl was able to smile. That girl was you.

At that time, your mother had recently passed away, leaving you to exile most of the people surrounding you. You cared for no one but family. You paid no attention to anyone but family.

But because of one whiney, blunt, yet loveable boy, it pushed off a lot of weight off a small girl’s shoulders.

“My mom used to say that,” you told him.

“She’s right, you know!”

And that was the day you were brought into his group of friends.

“Sehun! Yoonhee! This is Bora! Like purple*! Yoonhee isn’t your favorite color purple?” Jongin exclaimed.

*Bora is purple in Korean.

Fast-forwarding a few years, it was the end of middle school, around the time when all four of them were thirteen. You and Sehun greatly grew a fond for one another. At the time, you guys weren’t allowed cell phones yet, so most of the time, you would grab the home phone and call one another. Your father was also extremely strict with boys as well, so you’d call him whenever he wasn’t home.

A lot of people in your class teased you and Sehun a lot. Probably because the two of you practically looked like a couple.

As for Jongin, he was in a phase. He was practically a middle school ‘player’. Girls crushed on him extremely often, and he was no idiot; these girls were quite obvious and he took advantage of them. His level of cockiness was quite high as well and soon his whereabouts were hardly ever close to you. Jongin was pretty much never around female friends not even Yoonhee.

No matter how much you missed the whiney boy you met for the first time.

Since you and Sehun were quite close during this period, it was hard if one person didn’t develop feelings for the other. And so it happened.

It was Valentine’s Day that year. Sehun was also quite the guy back then as well, but not greatly appreciated as Jongin, plus most believed he liked you. And at the time, he really thought he didn’t. Your relationship was only believed to be pure friendship.

“Who are you giving chocolates to this year?” Sehun asked you.

In Korea, girls give the chocolate for the guys on Valentine’s Day, and boys return the gift the next month, White Day.

“I make it for the same person I give every year,” you replied nonchalantly.

“Jongin?”

“Exactly,” you answered.

“I thought you two weren’t even friends,” he asked.

“I appreciate him. He deserves chocolates from me for the rest of my life, if you ask me,” you tell him.

And at this very moment, Sehun was struck. Even if it was just a small act of ‘appreciation’, he had this terrible feeling when you said that. It made he want to yell at Jongin for being an for leaving such a great person like you around hanging. It made he want to take out a lot of anger towards Jongin.

At first, he thought it was just his over protective self, defending a friend.

Then after that, he couldn’t help but think to himself: why wasn’t he good enough for chocolates? If he was the one that approached you first back at the age of eight, maybe you would appreciate him like how you did towards Jongin? Why didn’t he get that special spot in your mind (or heart)?

After that, you were always running in his mind like an endless marathon.

Then he knew that it hit him on Valentine’s Day. Cupid spot an arrow through his heart.

He realized he liked you, Park Bora.

Author's Note: Oh my gosh. I updated before a month hit! Yes! This is progress. Honestly, I was sooooo stuck on how to write this until I got the idea of Sehun telling his story to a complete stranger. If I didn't, I really wouldn't know how this chapter would've gone. I literally wrote this in a day though (sorry for mistakes my b).  BUT SO HAPPY, but I still got exams... boohoo. It's okay! I had the muse, and I feel soooo satisfied writing.

I have no idea if you guys were expecting this kind of past or not... LOL I didn't want Sehun to be the first one to meet her. Only because in the past chapters, Jongin and Bora had a more intimate friendship and seemed to be easily connected even after a long period of time, something Sehun isn't able to grasp yet. I thought it was more appropriate and more of Jongin's character for them to meet first. He's the type to introduce his friends to new ones while I kind of characterized Sehun as the type to be more open only towards close friends, but towards strangers, it isn't likely for him to meet one on his own.

I don't know. Did this seem like an appropriate first meeting to you guys? Just in need of a second opinion.

Also, I didn't want Sehun to automatically fall in love with Bora either or at least automatically realize it. LOL I think Sehun is a bit clueless when it comes to his own feelings until a bam boom shock hit his head, which is why I concluded to Bora giving her chococlates to a guy who isn't even in her life anymore while Sehun was stuck with nothing from her. Sad, I know. I'm sorry, but it seems just about right to me. Life isn't all about unicorn and rainbows! Even if I want it to be :(
