Wings

One path to Heaven

Angels are messengers, but sometimes we misunderstand their language.

“You’re just sleeping right? Jiyong?” Seunghyun’s deep voice was coated in sadness while he looked over the smaller form currently lying on his bed. They made it safely back home and Seungri was in the living room trying to come to terms with what happened. He carefully deposited the angel on the bed and admired the serene face for the umpteenth time. It was difficult to speak and express his feelings because everything that happened was unbelievable.

Seunghyun refused to believe the angel was dead. Angels couldn’t die, that would be ridiculous. What supported his opinions was that Jiyong didn’t look dead, his body was simply in a deep slumber, almost like a comatose. That gave him a flicker of hope and he decided to stay by his side if he should wake up. The face before him was as pale as when they left the club and somewhere during the car ride his hair had turned from the striking blonde to a dull gray color. Still, Seunghyun thought he looked just as beautiful as before.

On Jiyong’s back was nothing. No traces of the wings that had been clipped or feathers left. The taller man was waiting for a sign, any sign that might appear in front of him. He’d been concentrating so hard he never noticed how the sky turned dim and startled when Seungri rested a hand on his shoulder with a smile that was strangely unfamiliar on the boy’s face but still very welcomed.

“Let’s eat hyung, he’s not going anywhere.”

They both went out, Seunghyun a little reluctantly, and enjoyed the warm food while chatting casually like they had all the time in the world.

“Is your back alright?” He asked, genuinely worried about his condition. “You hit the wall pretty hard back there.”

“I’m good, nothing bad enough to restrict my movements.” Seungri grinned before glancing towards the bedroom where the angel slept.

“You think Jiyong will…” He swallowed his words and looked back at Seunghyun, shaking his head lightly. “I mean, when do you think he’ll wake up?” The older wanted to answer but he couldn’t. He had no answers. Angels and demons weren’t exactly his forte but he would do anything to wake Jiyong and see his smile again. After hearing Seungri’s words it reminded him that he had to stay close to Jiyong. He didn’t want the angel to wake up alone and he wanted to be there when he actually woke up.

Slowly he thanked Seungri for the food and told him he could sleep on the couch if he wanted to. The younger man decided to stay while Seunghyun walked into the bedroom and joined the angel on the bed. He curled his body around the smaller and hugged him tight, hoping he could hear his wishes. After all, isn’t that what angels do?

The next morning was both familiar and unusual to him. Jiyong was still not awake and after too many hours of staring and wishing he had to get out of the bed to tend to his biological needs. After taking a shower and checking up on the angel again, he greeted Seungri who was sprawled out on the couch with his legs dangling languidly off the edge. The black coffee he poured down his throat was a bitter reminder of the reality but it felt good as always, in a strange way. When he stepped out on the balcony to breathe in some fresh air, cancer sticks and lighter in hand, he couldn’t help but inhale sharply, the cold air hitting his lungs making him shudder slightly. He still felt slightly drowsy and his mind was racing way too early in the morning. He wanted it to stop but realized fairly quickly that it wouldn’t happen anytime soon unless the angel opened his eyes.

Seungri replaced him in front of the bed while he made breakfast against his will. The younger man nagged him into eating, understanding how worried he was.

“I’m confused though, Jiyong is an angel?” Seungri looked perplexed and Seunghyun felt a little bad. “I never thought they existed but after seeing that ugly bastard yesterday and what he did to Jiyong, I’m definitely going to visit church more.” A small chuckle escaped the older man’s lips and they both grinned.

“I know, I’m surprised myself,” Seungri fixed his attention on him now. “He just appeared in my yard one day, completely mute and ignorant of everything.”

“I thought angels would be able to talk.” The younger man’s face was thoughtful as he tried to solve the puzzle in his head.

“I think he can, I’ve seen him while he prays and his mouth moves like any other person. Just that there’s no voice.” Seunghyun really wanted to hear his voice. He wondered if he’d be able to hear it one day and was pretty sure it would be as great as he expected it to be.

“Should we clean him?” Seunghyun blushed at that, a little afraid of what he might think when the angel was .  Although Seungri had a point he had never seen Jiyong become dirty. He never cleaned and although he took it for granted he figured it was another supernatural thing. They probably didn’t have showers in heaven, he thought.

“Maybe…” he trailed off and bent forward to check if Jiyong was alright. He still smelled divine and his hair, although grey, seemed perfectly fine. There were no bruises on his neck from yesterday and he was relieved to see there were no marks on his body. Carefully he sat next to him on the bed and attempted to lift the smaller body into the bathroom. However something caught his attention.

Suddenly he noticed the crinkle of the note Jiyong always kept in his pocket as he pulled away and he quickly reached forward to pull it out. He sighed sadly and opened it, expecting to see cute drawings and ridiculous words he’d been practicing in his language. Surprisingly the only word that was written on the note was ‘Chaerin.’

“Chaerin…” Seungri said, reading the note over his shoulder. “I think I know a Chaerin, but I’m not sure.” Seunghyun lit up at that. Maybe this person knew something about how to make Jiyong come back, if it was even possible. He had to believe it was possible even though there was little hope left in him. Frantically he looked at the other with wide eyes.

“How do you know her?”

“She actually visits Nine sometimes and I’ve spoken to her a couple of times,” Seungri’s face turned from contemplative to a shocked expression before he shot up and almost tripped. “She’s also mute, , maybe she’s one of them too?” The two men stared at each other in surprise, wheels turning in their heads simultaneously.

“Maybe she knows what to do,” Seunghyun gasped, inserting the note into his own pocket. “But how do we find her?”

“Well, if I remember right and the girl actually is Chaerin, I think we just have to pay the club a visit later today.” The younger man smirked seeing how their spirits lifted completely after gaining this knowledge. Seunghyun prayed again that she was the one, wanting time to move faster.

“Tell me again about Chaerin.” Seunghyun demanded, running a hand through his hair and suppressing his excitement.

“I tried buying her a few drinks but to no avail. She always looks sad, much like Jiyong, so I wanted to cheer her up seeing as she’s alone and everything…” From what he understood Seungri had tried to flirt with her but if she was a lot like Jiyong he understood why he was rejected. He chuckled lightly and sat down next to the sleeping form again, brushing his hand across his cheek. It was as cold as before and it left a bitter taste in his mouth.

“Seriously though, I would’ve never thought you’re gay,” When Seunghyun turned to look at him with a shocked expression Seungri simply shrugged casually. Seunghyun could not remember showing more than brotherly affection for the angel in front of him. “Don’t worry, I don’t mind, I’ve seen the way you act around him.”

“Yeah…” Seunghyun didn’t know what to say, everything was suddenly very foreign to him. Even the emotions inside, making his heart beat faster and making him feel like his chest was about to explode was something entirely different when Jiyong was around.

“But you’re still coming with me to clubs, bring Jiyong if you have to.” Seungri joked lightly, making Seunghyun laugh as well before nodding in defeat.

“I wasn’t gay before he came around though.” He gestured to the angel, thankful for the light mood between them and Seungri laughed in return. If only it could stay like that until it became late. It was as if time was moving even slower while they waited for the sun to set and they could hop into the car and drive quickly towards the club. Hopefully Jiyong would be safe home while they ran off, though he really considered leaving someone there with him. In fact he didn’t want to leave his side at all.

“Alright, how will I know what she looks like?” Seunghyun pulled Seungri closer as they stood outside the doors, a little nervous about entering the same place they were attacked earlier. Only the younger man knew how Chaerin looked like but since they both were going inside to search and it would be a little too noisy to communicate properly he wanted to know at least something before they went inside.

“She has really long blonde hair and sharp eyes, I’m sure we’ll find her easily. She usually sits at the same spot so let’s search there first.”

The club was the same as it always was, people dancing, music booming through the speakers and the smell of alcohol and sweat. They were welcomed like regulars since no one knew what they really came for. Seunghyun had to brush off a few strangers while trying to follow Seungri through the crowd on the dance floor. Finally they made it to the bar and ordered a couple of drinks, sipping on them while roaming the area with their eyes. The duo was silent for a moment until Seungri perked up with a grin.

“Over there, do you see her?” He gestured towards a booth and Seunghyun tried to follow with his eyes. Sure enough a woman was sitting there with long hair, dressed in casual clothes and her beautiful face could almost be up against Jiyong’s. The older man swallowed before downing the rest of his drink and walking towards her, Seungri in tow. He didn’t know what to say, what if she wasn’t an angel? Maybe she was just mute. Or maybe Seungri was wrong. Either way he would deal with the consequences later because if they were wrong he probably wouldn’t meet her again anyway.

A look of recognition crossed her features as Seungri walked up to her and sat down with a grin. She smiled back, nodding curtly to him before turning to Seunghyun with a smile. It made him feel a little out of place, or maybe this girl was a little out of place.

“This is my friend Seunghyun, I’m sure you’ve seen him around.” He introduced him and he nodded before sitting down next to Seungri, suddenly a little nervous. Chaerin smiled and wrote her name on a note like Jiyong did before and turned it to him. Luckily Chaerin had been able to learn how to write like them.

The three of them went silent for a few seconds as he contemplated what to say. What should he say, should he just go straight to the point or inquire about her situation? Meanwhile, Chearin stared at something else. Her eyes were fixed on a guy across the room that was sitting with another girl, chatting animatedly. He wondered if maybe he was like Seunghyun was to Jiyong, just that this guy had his eyes set on another girl.

“Is that someone you need to help as well?” The words escaped his mouth before he could stop himself and Chaerin turned quickly towards him with wide eyes. A moment passed where she just stared at him, then her gaze softened and she smiled again. It was a sad smile but Seunghyun could tell she was strong willed. Suddenly she leaned forward, reaching forward with her hand as if asking for permission. He stared at her hand, swallowing nervously before nodding even though he was unsure of what she was about to do.

When she touched his cheek the loud noise from the club faded and he felt himself becoming strangely calm. A comfortable warmth spread through him and before he had realized it, his eyelids fluttered shut.

“I can tell you’re familiar with what I am,” a female voice spoke. It was kind and light and he wanted to hear her speak more. “Please tell me what you wish for me to do.” Seunghyun was about to answer but images flashed through his mind, distracting him from the task. Images of Chaerin and the man she was watching showed themselves but none of the memories had them together. It puzzled him a little and it seemed like she knew what was bothering him.

“Sometimes we help the human better if we stay away,” Chaerin spoke softly. “This is one of those cases. Some of the choices he makes will lead to sadness and we angels are very capable of mirroring the emotions.” Seunghyun felt like giving her a comforting hug but he restrained himself.

“I need your help.” He simply said.

“Ah yes, I see, you have met your guardian.” Something was bugging Seunghyun and he couldn’t help but ask before he continued further.

“He can’t speak either. Are every one of you able to speak like this?” He huffed slightly. “If you are, why hasn’t he spoken to me?”

“Maybe because this kind of communication allows you to see each other’s secrets and inner thoughts. It might be that he respects your privacy.” Chaerin smiled reassuringly before urging him to go on. It was like he forgot about Seungri but he could feel his presence next to him and that calmed him even more. Knowing that the girl might see his thoughts made him feel and exposed. She was right, maybe it would be better if Jiyong didn't do that just yet.

“Yeah I need your help,” Seunghyun started his explaining. “Do you know Jiyong?” He started explaining everything that happened slowly as if not to miss any details. He described the demon and what he did, and luckily it seemed like Chaerin knew who Jiyong was. She gasped in terror after hearing what happened and Seunghyun could tell it was pretty bad just by looking at her expression.

“Please take me to him.”

Suddenly the noises that were faded earlier returned in full volume and Seungri came back into view.

“What’s going on? Did you talk or something?” The younger male looked back and forth between them, reading the atmosphere quickly. Seunghyun didn’t have time to explain because Chaerin was already heading for the exit and he was determined not to waste even a second if it meant she could wake Jiyong. He pulled Seungri quickly by the arm and the three of them hurried to the car.

“Are you sure you can leave that… guy inside by himself?” Seunghyun asked uncertainly, hoping he didn’t ruin anything for them by whisking the girl away like this. Chaerin just smiled and nodded but strangely enough he didn’t believe her.
