Emptiness

One path to Heaven

As much as Seunghyun had to admit the angel’s innocence and curiosity was adorable he also thought it was a bit annoying. He wouldn’t want to trade it for anything else in the world, no, but he secretly wished Jiyong was able to take care of himself. It was like the angel could be prone to dangerous animals attacking him that weren’t even supposed to exist in this area but it could still happen since Jiyong seemed to trust anything and every one. He attracted people like the beautiful creature he was and Seunghyun couldn’t help but spend most of his time worrying.

After they shared their little kiss things became different. Seunghyun was still a little afraid of mentioning the kiss but somehow they became even closer, spending much more time together. Days passed where he actually spent more time around the angel rather than going out at night. The more they were together the more he realized Jiyong couldn’t be anything else than an angel or nothing would be able to explain his strange behavior. Never mind his powers which Seunghyun said were magic tricks to keep his sanity, the blonde was energetic and had an insatiable curiosity basically every hour of the day.

It was wrong, he knew, but after what happened he couldn’t help but want to snap him back to his reality, tell him and show him that everything was not ing rainbows and unicorns. There was something inside him that told him to take and dirty the purity that surrounded the smaller man. Slowly it was driving him insane, the thought of wanting to touch him again nagged him every day and he knew Jiyong also felt it but he wasn’t sure if heunderstood.

While the days went by Jiyong had managed to convince him to go to work. It only worked because of his conscience and the boy’s face. The two mixed together was a dangerous combination. Something else was growing inside him at the same time. Seunghyun was only human, he had his faults. He couldn’t help and didn’t want to become annoyed because of the other boy’s actions. But he did. Irritation and tension built itself inside him making it too easy to snap at Jiyong’s many actions which he found incredibly adorable before. Always when he left him, he regretted it. It probably hurt him just as much as it did Jiyong but nonetheless it happened.

“Jiyong, turn off the damn TV already!” He bellowed louder than necessary and Jiyong cowered, dropping the remote with shaky hands. The taller man’s strange behavior didn’t go unnoticed by him and even though he tried his best to not be a burden it was proving to be difficult. No matter what he did, it seemed to be wrong.

Seunghyun calmed his breathing, covering his face with his palm. The angel had only been flipping through channels when he became fascinated by some variety shows and kept returning back and forth.  The sound drove him crazy and in the end he had to put an end to it. Of course, he didn’t count for Jiyong’s terrified, crushed expression that felt like a punch to the gut. Sometimes he really was an . Even so he didn’t find it in him to apologize, it was like he finally snapped and had to deal with this right now. Especially since Jiyong was almost in his face trying to apologize like he always did, like a kicked puppy asking to be punished.

He diverted his eyes and inhaled slowly, self-control threatening to fail him at any moment now.  The thousand complaints he had inside about Jiyong’s behavior were like an ocean of words becoming a waterfall and he had no means to stop it from flowing freely.

What did I do to make him angry, Jiyong questioned himself as he searched the other man’s eyes desperately. He’d even managed to distract him from drugs and get him to work but he didn’t want to be hated. Since the other was averting his eyes he tried grabbing his hands to catch his attention but the familiar electricity ran through his fingers and when Seunghyun finally had his gaze fixated on him it was starting to become a little too much.  He couldn’t help but squirm under the hard eyes, biting his lower lip nervously.

“You know what,” Seunghyun frowned and pulled his hand away roughly. “Don’t touch me anymore. I’m sure you’ve accomplished what you came for, now go back. I don’t need you.” He didn’t mean it, he spoke without thinking because he felt it too. The sparks where their skin touched and the overwhelming affection he felt for the angel. His mind was always occupied with Jiyong and it became worse with every passing day. He knew it perfectly well but didn’t want to admit it. The kiss they shared was just a tiny fragment, evidence of what he actually felt for him at this moment and it scared him. He was never good at expressing his feelings or thoughts to anyone besides himself and fell back to what he knew; anger.

Jiyong couldn’t cry, he wouldn’t cry. If he failed his mission it was his fault but he’d poured his whole soul into this mission and it hurt to hear Seunghyun say it. Somewhere in his heart he wished for them to be able to stay together for a little while longer but he was wrong. Maybe his mission was only meant to last for a short while. In his mind he wanted the taller man to take his words back so he hesitated for a few moments, continuing searching those eyes for an answer but it seemed like it was final. The angel had no right to refuse his wishes and took a deep breath before he stepped back with a smile.

The smile that covered the angel’s features was as blindingly beautiful as the first time he saw it and in an instant he wanted him back in his arms. But Jiyong was out of reach and even though he stretched his hand out for him, it was impossible. Before he knew it the angel was on his way out the door and he felt numb. Without hesitation he ran after him, out of the house and down the road breathing heavily and sweating profoundly because it felt like a piece of him died the moment he realized Jiyong was out of reach. Out of his life. It was a scary feeling and it tore in his heart, giving him shivers along his spine. When he saw the smaller frame not far away he sprinted until he knocked into the angel and enveloped him in a bone crushing embrace. Finally he felt safe, complete, and tried using his body language to apologize for everything.

Jiyong’s breath hitched when he realized what hit him. The distinct smell of Seunghyun calmed him down and made him return the embrace with a smile, using his hands to warm the other. He hadn’t planned on leaving just yet, he thought he could leave Seunghyun and silently observe him from afar to make sure he was alright. Every cell in his body told him that he should’ve stayed but his mind convinced him otherwise.

It had long ago become dark and Jiyong could feel Seunghyun shivering. He pulled back and covered his cheeks with his heated palms before grabbing his hand and leading them back home. It was cold and he wanted to get him home to the safe, warm sanctuary before he left him. He was silent when he sat down on the couch and it had the angel perplexed. Carefully he tried to pull away but his hand was stuck in the other’s grip. Startled he looked at his hands and then at Seunghyun before smiling slightly and attempted to remove himself again.

“No, don’t go.” Seunghyun had his hand in an iron grip and was unable to look the angel in the eyes. Jiyong’s eyes widened at the statement but he shook his head. The other man probably would have it better without him there and would probably be less angry. It was better for him and Jiyong would be able to watch him become healthy. That would surely be enough.

“I said you can’t go, please.” He saw Jiyong struggling to break free and pulled him down on the couch, halfway into his lap and held him there the same way he did earlier outside. The angel gave up on his struggle and relaxed in his arms. Seunghyun’s internal battle finally calmed and he allowed himself to think a little. Never would he let Jiyong walk out like that, he cared way too much. With the smaller man’s face into his shoulder he let his childish possessive side take control.

“You can’t go, I’m really angry right now.” He inhaled through gritted teeth and held him tighter, smelling the mouth-watering odor that emitted from the angel. “You’re gonna have to stay until I can calm down.” It wasn’t a lie, he was really angry. Angry at himself for being an to the only person he cared for and angry at Jiyong for leaving him that easily.

“You didn’t really want to leave did you?” His voice was small as he spoke into the blonde mop of hair. Jiyong who had his eyes shut exhaled shakily and shook his head, relieved that he could stay and worried about the other being angry. He believed he was really hated and when thinking about what was best for Seunghyun it was simply easier to give it all up. Now when he found himself in the safe embrace, his mind automatically wandered back to the kiss and he trembled slightly, familiar blush spreading across his cheeks. The way Seunghyun was breathing into his hair and restraining his every movement by pressing his body into his chest, letting him feel his beating heart, distracted him to no end.

It was safe to say that Seunghyun was equally distracted, his anger momentarily forgotten because of the angel. They’d been lying still for about ten minutes and he still hadn’t let Jiyong go. Somehow Jiyong had managed to turn his head though and was breathing into his neck, sending waves of pleasure through his body. It was making him weak and his hold finally faltered allowing the blonde to sit up slightly and look at him curiously. He had to shake his head and straighten his back, Jiyong mirroring his actions next to him. They stared at each other for what seemed like eternities and the angel could feel the familiar tension hanging in the air.

A gift from whatever entity was watching over him, it had to be a gift because Jiyong was the one who leaned forward curiously this time, initiating a kiss while tasting the air between them and acting upon it. While trembling slightly the blonde shifted his whole body closer and his eyes fluttered shut as he pressed his lips to the corner of Seunghyun’s mouth. He simply held his lips there and there were too many sensations at once. The taller man had to summon a massive amount of self-restraint to avoid ravishing the beautiful creature in front of him. Then again, he was angry and that made it perfectly okay to be a little more aggressive.

A soundless gasp was pulled from the smaller man in his lap as he cupped his cheeks and covered his lips with his own one more time. Seunghyun used his surprise to his advantage and invaded the delicious mouth with his own tongue, mapping every perfect teeth and gum, realizing it was way more addicting than any drug. Jiyong startled and tried to pull away but only a few seconds passed before he found himself melting, limbs going weak as he too drank from the other man’s lips. It felt even more wrong than the last kiss they shared but he simply could not get enough. He would be happy if he could simply spend the rest of his eternity fighting off the butterflies in his stomach and in this man’s embrace.

Suddenly his head was tilted backwards by Seunghyun as he kissed him deeper, on the wet muscle and nipping his lips roughly. He thought he was going to run out of strength and basically turn into a puddle but the other man’s moan snapped him back to reality. With the little power he had left he pushed back, separating the two and panted slightly. The taller looked down at him, still not having released his hold on him yet and took in the flushed face and swollen lips of the blonde. Dark eyes and the hard stare made Jiyong bite his lower lip but not avoid his eyes.

“Sorry, it’s just…” Seunghyun had to swallow and restrain himself before he continued. “You’re too irresistible.” The angel looked confused but leaned slightly into his touch, his thumb caressing his cheek softly. At that moment Seunghyun really wished he could speak and he really wished to hear what was probably the most perfect voice in the whole world, coming from those almost sinful lips. However he reeled himself in and stood up to make a point, which was one of the most difficult things he’d done in his lifetime.

“I’m still angry so you can’t leave.”

….

It was safe to say Jiyong was at another loss, not knowing how to make up for his wrongs this time. Seunghyun was true to his words and stayed angry whenever he was around.  As a result the angel walked around with a tremendous guilt weighing on his back that wouldn’t go away until the other man cheered up.

Seunghyun even started going out at night again but luckily still didn’t neglect his job. He just left the house and came home not too late to have about six hours of sleep before he went to work again. It made him sad and he felt like he was being punished, the feeling so painful he spent every minute away from Seunghyun to figure out a way to make him happy again. Of course he had confronted him but the older man simply said Jiyong needed a reality check before briskly walking away. Now he spent a lot of time trying to understand the meaning behind his words but it was difficult even though he racked his brain for every possible answer. It was also out of the question to ask the High angel about such a trivial matter.

It was inevitable that Seunghyun would start to feel bad. He didn’t want to go out every day or be angry but he couldn’t help it. Also somewhere in his mind something told him that this was the only way to keep the angel around. Many nights he spent with Seungri, watching his younger friend find him girls and he would eventually not very politely decline their offers. What he really wanted was to be home with Jiyong in a tight embrace forever. He thought Jiyong was lucky he was too exhausted to do anything else than fall asleep when he got home from a long night. If he had more energy he was afraid of what he might do to him.

Every night the smaller boy tried to talk to him in his own mute way and he refused to give in easily. The crest fallen look on Jiyong’s face every time was enough to make his heart break into a million pieces but he glued it temporarily together and it was already mended by the time he woke up in the morning and left for work.

One day Seungri barged into their house in a familiar fashion and even he noticed the awkward atmosphere between them. It was silent and they both seemed ridiculously hurt by it. Seunghyun was glad the younger man didn’t question it and they went out together, leaving Jiyong at home like always to wallow in his sadness.

Jiyong startled in the middle of prayers, feeling something was wrong with Seunghyun. He was always keeping track of the other man even though he couldn’t see him, making sure he was safe and well away from him. This was the first time something nudged in the back of his consciousness, giving him a sharp pain in his head. He hurried to his feet, worried about what might’ve happened and stumbled out the door before transporting himself to Nine again, where Seunghyun was going to be that night.

Cautiously he stepped inside only to find that there was no music, no people and the light was dim. It made the club almost dead silent except for sounds of footsteps that were not his own. Jiyong tensed before rounding the corner and noticed an unfamiliar figure pacing around. Another moment passed before he saw Seungri passed out on the couch and Seunghyun lying on the floor, struggling against an invisible force. His eyes widened and he let out another gasp, making what seemed like their captor turn around and face him with a wicked smile.

Jiyong was prepared for a fight, he would do everything within his powers to save Seunghyun and Seungri. All angels had combat training and Jiyong was no exception. His eyes narrowed as he stepped forward slowly, connecting his mind with the demon in front of him. The demon had fiery red hair, an ugly frown and a built body not much unlike Seunghyun’s. He was dressed in a clad black coat and his large black wings were spread to intimidate. When he stepped forward, eyes casting a quick glance at Seunghyun before returning to the demon, he stood in front and almost covered Seunghyun from his view. The smirk on his face turned wider and he bared his fangs, their sharpness intimidating to any other living being.

“I’ve been trying to find you for ages, angel.” The demons voice was sharp and alluring, its intensity could make even the strongest man tremble. “I finally found you.”

Jiyong figured the demon must have tracked him down after feeling his presence close by. It wasn’t unexpected, some demons thrived on hunting down angels and eating their powers just for fun. Having their powers only lasted for a while though, it was like a high, they felt more powerful and simply depriving someone of their every spark of energy was like a thrill to them. Too many times had Jiyong been reminded of what would happen to an angel if their powers were removed.

When the demon spread his arms in an inviting gesture, Jiyong grit his teeth and glared at him. This was a tough situation, the demons rarely kept hostages. He spoke directly into the demons head, his voice loud and clear only to him.

“What do you want?”

“You know perfectly well what I want,” the demon bellowed before swinging his hand, making Seunghyun flip into a standing position midair while the skin around his throat tightened painfully. He groaned and tried to grab whatever was choking him.

“Stop it, let him go or I’ll have to kill you.” Jiyong’s face contorted into an expression of anger. He knew it was futile to threaten a demon but he tried anyhow. If he made one wrong move Seunghyun’s neck might snap at any time. The angels powers were not made for combat, they were made to help and he didn’t have many options. Had Seunghyun been safe somewhere else, he could easily make a move and send this demon back to hell immediately but it had him cornered.

“I’ve searched for a long time and now I’m tired,” The demon stepped closer to Seunghyun with an exasperated sigh and trailed a nail along his neck slowly. “So you better hurry up and surrender yourself to me or I’ll have this guy for lunch.” He spoke slowly with a sideway glance towards Jiyong and a smirk that mocked his whole being. Briefly, Jiyong’s gaze met with Seunghyun’s and took in his terrified expression that shook him to the very core. It seemed like he didn’t have much of a choice.

“Just let him go and I’ll do what you want.”

“Then come closer, angel.” It was an easy decision if Seunghyun would be free. When he stepped closer the captured man was slowly lowered to the ground and he fell down with loud gasps as he was allowed to finally breathe properly again. He heaved against the floor and Jiyong felt relief wash over him. The angel gave him a last glance before standing still in front of the demon.

“N-no, let him go!” Seunghyun croaked from the floor, watching the demon grin sadistically down at the angel like he was a weak prey. He didn’t know what was happening but the angel’s face said it all. It was saying a painful farewell.

“It won’t hurt to try one last time,” Jiyong thought before he tried to punch the demon in the stomach. However the demon who had been watching him intently expected the move and dodged easily, grabbed his throat and lifted him into the air until he couldn’t feel the ground any longer. He struggled against the hand that was holding him, feeling his limbs go weak. Images of other angels that had been killed this way washed over his eyes until white spots covered his vision. Seunghyun’s desperate voice faded in the background until it was nothing but a low bass. But Jiyong didn’t give in just yet and swiped his hand over his pocket in a last attempt to live before letting it dangle without any strength left. The demon raised his hand behind Jiyong back and with a white glow he forced his wings out slowly. Jiyong screamed soundlessly, desperately holding back but to no avail. They were pulled out, fluttering widely before going limp like the rest of his body. Tears rolled down Jiyong’s cheeks while he sobbed and the demon ended it with one last swipe of his hand, cutting the wings straight off without a word or a sound.

The wings fell to the ground before disappearing like smoke into the air and the feathers that blew up swayed slowly to the ground. Seunghyun watched with wide eyes as the demon inhaled slowly with the same grin plastered on his face. Only a few moments passed before he dropped Jiyong’s lifeless body to the ground and laughed. By now everything was happening in slow motion and he crawled over to the angel and cradled him in his arms. His body was deadweight, not even a muscle was moving like he was sleeping and unable to wake up.

“Jiyong! Jiyong!” He shouted and shook the lifeless body hard. Jiyong’s eyes were halfway shut like he didn’t have time to close them before his spirit left him and he could see the bright light in his eyes was gone. “Wake up, please,” Seunghyun choked and looked at his beautiful face that was now paler than ever. He didn’t seem real anymore and it was hard to believe he’d left him.

“That was delicious, I feel greater than ever.” The demon laughed and turned towards him with a of his lips. “Maybe I should devour you too while I’m at it-” His words stopped short as a bottle hit him hard in the back head, which only made him flinch but startled him nonetheless. Seungri was standing on the couch behind him, broken bottle in hand and a determined expression on his face.

“That’s for knocking me out, er.” The younger man spit before lunging at him and stabbing him with the same bottle. It didn’t hurt him much but he managed to get a few hits before the demon roughly sent him against the wall with an angry yell. Seunghyun watched in horror when Seungri slid down the wall slowly, groaning in pain. He realized he had little strength to fight a creature like that but quickly decided that he didn’t have much choice. Then again he had other things that could work to his advantage.

“Seungri, let’s go!” He shouted before standing up with Jiyong over his shoulder and threw whatever heavy items close to him as they both scrambled towards the exit. To his relief it was already morning and when they made it out the door the demon hissed in anger, glaring at them before chuckling darkly.

“Whatever, I got what I came for.” The demon smirked before vanishing in black smoke. “Consider yourself lucky, useless humans.” It took Seunghyun a minute before he realized the demon was gone and he rushed to his car, Seungri in tow. He laid Jiyong down in the backseat with a sad frown and looked at him sorrowfully. The warm body was now cold and he didn’t seem more alive than a doll any longer. His younger friend circled his shoulders with an arm before pulling back. They had to get away, neither of them felt safe and it was impossible to think straight right now.

Even so he needed a minute to calm himself and covered his face in his palm as he held back a wrecked sob that threatened to slip past his lips. He used his other hand to hold onto Jiyong’s smaller, cold one as he leant the rest of his body on the side of the car heavily.
