026: Tragically Golden
Like Stars In the Sky
A tragedy.
Macbeth is considered one of the most well known tragedies, Doyeon wasn't sure how that held up against her current situation. Because, as she looked down at the melting ice cream that littered the sidewalk, she felt as if she was in the midst of a situation that William Shakespeare could only wished to have written. "Dang it." She groaned, bending down to pick up the cone, just causing more sugary delight to spill out. Doyeon didn't often leave her house at night by herself, it wasn't the safest thing to do, but since summer was coming to an end, she thought it would be a fun little adventure. So, she started her night by going to the ice cream shop in town. "I should have stayed home and watched a movie." She concluded, dumping the cone in the nearest trash bin. She pulled her jacket closer, her outfit wasn't her best plan either. When she left home, she figured a pair of high-waisted shorts, with a well fit black top, and a soft oversized red jacket was a good idea. She didn't take into account that summer nights were usually somewhat chilly. Her upper half was perfectly warm, but her legs were starting to get cold. Overall the entire outing was a let down.
She'd wanted to get ice cream, then go find something fun to do after, but instead she found herself walking the streets that would lead her home. In her mind she told herself she'd go out some other night. She stuck one earphone in her ear, leaving the other unplugged so she'd be able to hear her surroundings. The walk home was quiet, except for the slow songs that played in her earphones. She breathed in the smell of the beautifully green trees and flowers. Her outing wasn't a complete bust, she was still able to enjoy the night--though she couldn't help but feel like something was missing. If Jaemin were here he would have made fun of me and my ice cream. Doyeon chuckled at her own thought, before pausing, If any of the guy's were here they would have all made fun of me. She corrected herself. She'd been hanging out with Jaemin too much, he kept finding his way into her thoughts. Doyeon knew that was just what it was like to have a best friend, when something funny happens you just want to tell them about it. With that thought; she dug her phone out of her pocket.
The sound of static noise made her ear uncomfortable for a few seconds, but luckily the other line was picked up quickly. "Hello?" Jaemin's voice greeted.
"Hey," Doyeon suddenly regretted calling, was she just going to mention her ice cream and hang up?
She could hear the sound of Jaemin closing a door, "Did something happen? You don't usually call me." He sounded like he was teasing her.
Doyeon shrugged, it took her a second to remember that he couldn't see her. "I'm walking home and it's too quiet." She said.
Jaemin sounded a bit more worried now, "Why are you out so late? It's already past nine." His earlier teasing tone was nowhere to be found. He was easily worried, which isn't something you'd expect from someone who gives off such a carefree feeling. That probably could fit under the saying 'never judge a book by it's cover'. "I'm at Jeno's but I could come pick you up if you need."
Doyeon snorted, "It's fine, I wanted to walk home." She switched her phone to the other ear, her arm getting tired, "I went to go get some ice cream, and ended up dropping the cone before I even turned the corner." His laughter on the other line didn't help to make her feel any better--it was still a tragedy.
"Oh my goodness, that's hilarious!" He hollered, "I would pay money to see your face when it hit the ground!" Zero percent: the amount that this conversation has made her feel better. Maybe someday she'll think back and laugh about it, but she was wrong to assume that would be today.
Doyeon gritted her teeth, "I don't think it's that funny." She forced out, "I'll let you go if you're at Jeno's." Doyeon said, her eyebrows furrowing.
"It's fine, I can tal-" he stopped himself, Jeno and Jun were waiting for him. "Okay, I'll talk to you later." He said. Doyeon hummed in agreement. They both said good-bye before hanging up. Doyeon was about to enter the neighborhood already. She scrolled through her contacts, Jeno was busy, most of the other guys were on summer vacations with their families. Doyeon decided it was best to just continue listening to music. The only sounds that could be heard were the padding of her feet, and the light humming of her voice. She didn't notice her own humming though, Doyeon used to be in choir when she was younger; but it was another thing that she left when everything in her life started to crash down. It felt nice how free she felt now, so free that she'd finally stopped noticing all her little changes. Doyeon bit back a smile as she walked up to her house. As soon as the door opened, she was bombarded by two frantic figures running about the house.
"Uh-" she was cut off by her dad. Mr. Nam pushed his hair out of his face as he walked up to her, he closed the door behind her and used the rang in his hand to wipe the handle clean. Now Doyeon was really confused. "Why are you cleaning so late?" She asked.
"Your grandparents decided to make a surprise visit." Mr. Nam said, looking more stressed than Doyeon had seen him in a while. "They're arriving tomorrow--go make sure your room is clean!" He pushed her toward the staircase. Doyeon was already in her room before she had time to process what he said. When she did, her face broke out into the widest grin. It had been over two years since she'd last seen them, d
