"I can tell you're nervous, but please stop taping your knee against the table." Jeno laughed through his words. Doyeon's leg immediately stopped, she hadn't even realized what she'd been doing. In all honesty, from the second Jaemin half dragged her from her house, everything around her had seeped into the background. Her own nervousness and doubts on if she could really sit beside Jaeyoon ate away at her. She told herself she was being silly, and that the only reason she'd freaked out so badly is because she had been taken by surprise. Now that she knew what--who--to expect, she wasn't going to react like that. "You know what's good for when you're nervous?" Jeno asked, his smile turning brighter, Doyeon shook her head. He reached into his backpack, "Ta-da!" He produced the rubix cube he'd had hidden in his bag. "I took it from Jun's room before I left, I figured it would be good for you to put your attention onto something else." He set it on her desk.
Doyeon grabbed it hesitantly, "And that's supposed to help me relax?" She asked, beginning to turn the layers of the cube so she could complete it.
Jeno nodded his head eagerly, "Yes. It's simple human psychology, really, if you set your focus on one thing, it will be easier to tune everything else out. So instead of focusing on the feeling of anxiousness, which makes you tap your knee like that, instead you're focusing on how to solve the rubix cube. And, also it makes your hands move instead of your feet."
"Done." Doyeon placed the toy back on his desk.
Jeno looked between her and the cube on his desk. "Well, I'm not sure why I expected that to distract you for longer." He sunk down into his seat, clearly out of ideas.
Doyeon snorted, "I'm not sure, since you know I'm the best at those." He brightened up at how her voice sounded less nervous. He decided to roll with the conversation, another great form of distraction for her, and an always pleasant occurrence for him.
"You know, I still haven't been able to master it like you. Neither has Jun." He tacked on.
Doyeon hummed, "It takes practice, I had a lot of free time when I lived with my grandparents, and my grandfather was good at them as well, so he taught me." She looked back fondly on those memories.
"You must be really close with him, it seems like your grandfather taught you a lot." He didn't doubt that she was also close with her grandmother, but it seemed her relationship ran deeper with her grandfather.
"Yeah, my dad says I act just like him, I get a lot of my looks from him too." It was beginning to hit Doyeon just how much she missed seeing him everyday. She hadn't seen her grandparents since before she moved to this town.
Jeno looked surprised, "Your grandfather must be pretty." He didn't process what he'd said, not until Doyeon started chuckling. When he replayed his words in his head, he suddenly felt thoroughly embarrassed by his big mouth. "I mean, since you know- you're a girl and he's a guy, of course you'd be prettier." He clarified.
Doyeon shook her head, amused, as she moved her hand into the little supplies holder part of her desk, so that she could grab her pencil case out. She looked down when she felt the edge of an envelope. She looked at it, confused, before grabbing the letter and bringing it closer so she could read the faint pencil that was on the front. To Doyeon. From Jaeyoon. She froze, when had he written this? Before she could even think of opening it, the teacher walked in and began with an announcement.
"As some of you may have noticed, Jaeyoon is absent." She threw her books down on the desk, "He decided to switch his schedule, so he will no longer be in this classroom." The teacher looked down at the list on her desk, "Okay, before we start with today's lesson, we'll do roll call." She began listing off names, but neither Doyeon or Jeno were paying attention.
"He switched classrooms?" Jeno said in disbelief. Doyeon looked down at the note in her hands, she shakily slipped it into her backpack. Had he done so because of her?
That question rang through her head the entire school day. Even when her friends were happily discussing it during lunch break, she wasn't able to feel anything but confused. Why would he run from her? Was he sorry?
School ended, and she hurriedly headed out of the classroom, she wasn't sure where she was going exactly. But, she found herself looking through the windows of each classroom. Until her eyes finally landed on Jaeyoon's figure, he was packing up his bag. As soon as he turned his head he noticed her, they both stood frozen in each other's presence. Nobody paid attention to him standing there, but Doyeon had to hear everyone walking out of the classroom asking why she was just standing there. Doyeon finally apologized and instead moved into the
